Major Rackspace Outage

A few hours back a major outage occured in Rackspace Dallas Datacenter, one of their support explains:An isolated vehicle accident occurred involving a power transformer outside of our datacenter. The transformer feeding power to the DFW datacenter was damaged causing power transfer to generator and ending cooling to the entire datacenter. The temperature increase required that your server(s) be shut down in order to prevent additional issues. We do not know the estimated downtime at this time, and we are currently working to rectify the situation and will provide updates via the MyRackspace.com portal as they become available. Your patience and understanding during this time are greatly appreciated.Our server was backup after 2:30 hours.

A decision to wipe 11,000 machines of their shipped Mandriva Linux operating system and replace it with Windows XP for Nigeria n schools has been reversed.---Good choice Nigeria. I've been reading articles about this deal for sometime now and was very sad about the news about replacing Madriva Linux to Windows XP. Ubuntu 7.10 is out today. Codenamed "Gutsy Gibbon" -- in that alliterative fashion that never gets old (yet) -- 7.10 includes the brand new GNOME 2.20 desktop, Compiz Fusion for gee whiz 3D interface effects, desktop search (pictured), fast user switching, Firefox plugin support, much improved monitor support and configuration (at last), and a whole bunch of other minor tweaks and major improvements. Time will tell if this release proves to be the true commercial OS killer a lot of people are banking on, but there's no denying that Ubuntu Linux provides an increasingly attractive and perpetually free alternative to traditional operating systems and even many Linux desktop distributions.
