Linux losing?
2007-10-31 06:07:00
A recent report from IDC says that Linux is losing out its share to Windows on x86 servers.According to reports, Linux growth has dropped from a 2003 high of +57% down to to -6% 2006. Over the same time period, Windows has continued to report positive annual growth. The reason for high growth of Linux was due to conversions from various Unix to Linux, and that the fast growth was due for a slowdown once largescale conversions were complete. Difference between kvm and Xen
2007-10-30 13:49:00
Xen is an external hypervisor; it assumes control of the machine and divides resources among guests. On the other hand, kvm is part of Linux and uses the regular Linux scheduler and memory management. This means that kvm is much smaller and simpler to use. kvm only run on processors that supports x86 hvm (vt/svm instructions set) whereas Xen also allows running modified operating systems on non-hvm x86 processors using a technique called paravirtualisation. kvm does not support paravirtualization for cpu but may support paravirtualization for device drivers to improve I/O performances.Got from : http://kvm.qumranet.com/kvmwiki/FAQ

dmidecode
2007-10-29 09:51:00
Dmidecode reports information about your system's hardware as described in your system BIOS. This command gives you vendor name, model name, serial number, BIOS version, asset tag as well as a lot of other details. This will include usage status for the CPU sockets, expansion slots (e.g. AGP, PCI, ISA) and memory module slots, and the list of I/O ports (e.g. serial, parallel, USB). A pretty useful command for sysadmins to prepare their system inventory. # which dmidecode/usr/sbin/dmidecode# dmidecode 2.2SMBIOS 2.3 present.87 structures occupying 3227 bytes.Table at 0x000FA920.Handle 0xDA00       ;  DMI type 218, 11 bytes.       ;  OEM-specific Type      & nbsp;          Header And Data:               ;      &nbs p;    DA 0B 00 DA D9 00 17 00 0E 2...
