Linux in 30 Seconds
2008-03-15 15:24:00
I was sent an interesting link to a “beta” site. After playing a bit, I came up with a rough video but thought I’d post it for readers who might be interested in this service to produce their Linux related videos. My favourite line? “It’s the difference between trust and antitrust” Loading... Here’s the link ...

Creating a Linux Terminal Media Server for Your Home PC?s
2008-03-14 15:02:00
It seems we always need to update our PC hardware at one point or another, to keep abreast of the increasing demands that current software makes of our computers. If like me, you hate to lose the use of older PC’s, you may store them away for “later” projects. When I was a heavier Windows user, ...

The Real Way to Learn Linux
2008-03-13 17:52:00
Yesterday evening I was joking around with a couple of the people here as they were bugging me about being an “Ubuntu” user. Often the questions I receive are about how to do something in “Ubuntu”. Maybe I’m just being thin-skinned, but I’d like to clarify something, particularly to new users. Ubuntu is not an ...

Make Your Own Plug ?N Play Zone Using Ubuntu Linux!

One of the things I dislike is reinstalling any operating system over, and over, and over again. After a while it becomes boring and inconvenient when you’ve a hot idea you want to try out. One of the things I enjoy doing (and I’ve posted several ideas or projects), is to try out new ways, ...

Digital Forensics in Linux - Reclaiming Data Off a Failed Hard Drive.
2008-03-11 20:53:00
I recently spoke with a lady who operates a Forensic Accounting consultancy. During the course of our conversation, she indicated that from time-to-time she receives requests for computer data related assistance. Namely, obtaining deleted information off hard drives or data off failed drives. Her business operates on Windows based platforms and she was wondering how ...

There is Good Gaming in Ubuntu!
2008-03-10 15:56:00
I received a couple email messages over the weekend, that in essence, suggested Linux is a terrible platform for gaming because Linux does not support gamers. Additionally, hardware support issues were also raised. While I’m sure there are a myriad of opinions, I couldn’t help but pause on a couple of them. Particularly as I ...

2008-03-08 20:12:00
Earlier this week we were discussing if Ubuntu Linux needed antivirus software. (If you missed the post, it is here: Does Ubuntu Linux Really Need Antivirus Software?) During the course of the discussion, one of our readers (from TechCollective) suggested we try out “Wubi ”. If you’ve never heard about it: “Wubi is an unofficial Ubuntu installer ...

Are You Keeping Your Ubuntu Linux PC Secure?
2008-03-07 15:22:00
Lately, there’s been a bit of discussion here about Ubuntu (and Linux as a whole) security. Suffice it to say, some of the input from readers about Linux virus issues has been very informative. (You can read the post and the comments here: Does Ubuntu Linux Really Need Antivirus Software?). Some of my “Windows Weenies” ...

Continuing on from yesterday’s email adventure: Thunderbird Has Lost my eMail in Ubuntu! a prudent preventive measure (I suggested later in the day) is to make sure you always have a current backup of email! Does Ubuntu Linux Really Need Antivirus Software?

One of the people who switched to Ubuntu Linux recently, phoned me asking what kind of antivirus they should have installed. Quite frankly, I’ve never given that a thought. Make Windows XP Looks Like Ubuntu!?
2008-03-03 16:29:00
Did I read that title correctly? Yup! There actually is a guide that allows XP users to make their box look like Ubuntu . Imagine that! While us Ubuntu users use the real thing, some Windows users are still stuck in that “theme” mode. (And I mean that in a humourous way!!) A few lot of ...

Top 10 Must Have Applications for Ubuntu. (In no particular order).
2008-02-18 21:54:00
For all the people who asked what apps I use, these are the ten best applications that I recommend having installed on an Ubuntu based PC. Why? They allow for some eye candy, but most importantly all for a computer that can actually do something valuable – Instead of just looking good ;) And… I like them! I’m not including OpenOffice as part of the list, because I think that’s a given and a matter of fact! - http://www.openoffice.org/ Have better applications, disagree?, agree? Say so in the comments section! 1) Compiz/Beyrl – For nice eye candy. (http://compiz.org/) Offers a superior window management environment for your Ubuntu installation. One system used here, with an older video card (GF 6800GT 256MB DDR3 Dual DVI TV PCI-E); but at least I get to experience on of the most exciting GUI interfaces ever. If you’ve not had the chance to use Beyrl/Compiz, see the video below: Loading... Please keep in mind that the features and functions depend a lot on...

465 Free Fonts for Ubuntu
2008-02-17 16:37:00
Foreword: If you enjoy these fonts and this post then please consider spreading the love by partaking in a little digging. I wouldn’t normally ask but this site is currently powered by a prototype blogging application and I could really do with the extra traffic to help judge its performance. Thanks. Brian Kent is a prolific font designer. At 32 years old he’s already amassed an impressive collection of handmade fonts. He’s also a really nice guy and has agreed to let me package his free fonts for Ubuntu . How to Install the Fonts You can browse and download Brian’s fonts directly from his website. Or, to install all of the fonts simply follow the instructions below. The instructions should work for both Feisty and Gutsy. 1. Open your apt sources.list file for editing with the following terminal command: sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list 2. Add the following two lines to the bottom of the file: deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/corenominal/ubun tu gutsy main d...

Armin Ronacher: Werkzeug 0.2 Released!
2008-02-16 13:47:00
Wohoo. Werkzeug 0.2 is out now. Werkzeug started as simple collection of various utilities for WSGI applications and has become one of the most advanced WSGI utility modules. It includes a powerful debugger, full featured request and response objects, HTTP utilities to handle entity tags, cache control headers, HTTP dates, cookie handling, file uploads, a powerful URL routing system and a bunch of community contributed addon modules. So, what’s new in 0.2? Countless things and too many for this small list, but here the most important ones: The path converter limitation is gone. rejoice! In the contrib package there is now a secure cookie (basically a hashed a client side session storage) Exceptions can now return response objects so that you can add headers etc. You can now convert a response object to a different type of response objects on the fly (for example if you have your own response object subclass with special features but the response object returned by a function is a...

Duda Nogueira: CBC.ca Radio in ogg vorbis
2008-02-16 13:47:00
Yeah! One more reason for loving Canada! As some of you may know, I’m studying the English Language in Vancouver, Canada (Business English and Proficiency). Today, while working on a project for a client in Brazil, I was looking for a way to hear the CBC (I usually hear it on the way for the college on my Generic Ipod). After accessing their website and going through the regular way, I was unable to hear the radio streaming with mplayer. Googling cbc + linux, I found this article, Adopting Ubuntu… good reading, but not what I wanted. So I googled again for listen+cbc+linux This time, I found “my precious“: some informations about streaming + cbc + linux/*NIX. But (and there’s always a but) as they are testing the CBC streaming under Ogg Vorbis format, they only let two options to choose for: CBC Radio One, and CBC Radio Two. If you want CBC+Ogg, that’s all you can have. It just works! On the other hand, you can access the “All url streams page” and see a lot of strea...

Bryce Harrington: Display Configuration
2008-02-16 13:46:00
My latest project has been a display configuration tool, which I alluded to a couple weeks ago: As mvo had pointed out to me a few weeks ago, the thing that makes coding xrandr GUI’s hard is that the useful logic for configuring multi-head’s is in the xrandr tool, rather than in libxrandr. Anyway, the GUI came together pretty easily after I got that sorted out. The tool’s correctly reading the outputs, resolutions, and screen layouts via xrandr. Next up, making it apply changes…
