Office 2.0 Conference 2008 Registration
2008-07-03 22:03:00 The Office 2.0 Conference 2008 is just two months away, and it's time for us to start working on it again. In pure IT|Redux fashion, the whole event will again be organized in 9 short weeks, with no staff, and in a paperless manner. Granted, we have two editions under our belt, and we pretty much know what works and what does not. So let's do it again, and learn as much as we can along the way. A Better Traveling Experience
2008-06-30 13:57:00 Now that we better understand the concept for the Monolab|Workspace, let?s take a closer look at its benefit for the frequent traveler, defined as someone accumulating over 100,000 qualifying miles per year (1K on United Airlines for example). In fact, let?s go through the main steps of a travel abroad, and identify simple ways to significantly improve the traveler?s overall experience, with a single goal in mind: reducing stress, by eliminating uncertainties. Micro Global Business
2008-06-29 17:53:00 As we're further developing the concept for the Monolab|Incubator, we're starting to realize that our target market is not exactly the one we had in mind initially. While early stage companies remain our customers, we're slowly expanding our focus from the solo entrepreneur to the already-formed start-up company. And for the later, we're focusing on what we call Micro Global Business es (MGB). [Continue...] More About: Standardization
I Love Technology
2008-06-24 08:37:00 Nine years ago, on this very day, I was in Tokyo, speaking at what might have been the first local conference on Open Source. Back then, the only way to connect to the Internet on the go was by using a 28 Kbps modem, assuming you could afford the cost of a long-distance call to your home-based ISP, or would know the local dial-up number for AOL or CompuServe. Nine years later, at this very moment, I am writing this blog post sitting in a JR train on the Yamanote Line, connected to the Internet using a brand spanking new EMOBILE 3G modem bought in Akihabara, built by Huawei, and delivering a mind-blowing 7.2 Mbps. 257 times faster, sans wires. I love technology... Many thanks to Nicolas for his help in setting this up. More About: Technology , Love
Virtual Incubator Concept
2008-06-20 14:05:00 Since we announced the creation of the first Monolab|Incubator, many people have asked us whether we will offer drop-in packages or not. We've given very serious considerations to this request, and came up with a virtual incubator concept that got the attention of many people, especially from the VC community. Lease Signed
2008-06-19 23:04:00 May and I just signed the lease on the space we're renting in Palo Alto downtown for the Monolab|Incubator. The address is 543 Bryant Street, half a block away from both City Hall and University Avenue. Essentially, Palo Alto's epicenter. We decided to work on this project no earlier than May 25th (less than a month ago), May tendered her resignation on June 4th, and here we are three weeks away from our grand opening. Some people think we're a bit crazy, and I can totally see why... This is getting fun! More About: Signed , Lease
BPM 2.0 Redux
2008-06-15 01:34:00 In about 40 minutes, I will give a presentation on BPM 2.0 at a conference taking place on the Australian Gold Coast (Winter is nice down there). While I was going through my emails and blogs before the event, Google Reader recommended that I take a look at a post titled Do We Really Need BPM 2.0 and authored by Jim Sinur, a former Gartner analyst who recently went to work for Global 360. While I'm glad to see the moniker Bruce Silver and I created two years ago being adopted on the marketplace, I must admit that I was quite surprised to see that Jim was making it his own, without giving due credit. While I would usually treat such blatant plagiarism as pure flattery, I just cannot ignore it today. Eight years ago, I introduced the concept of BPMS, and made significant contributions to the concept of BPM with my friend Howard Smith, only to see them corrupted by industry analysts who love nothing more than confusing customers in order to sell them advisory services. Not all of them...
Floor Plan & Launch Party
2008-06-12 11:20:00 The Monolab|Incubator project is moving full speed ahead. The floor plan is drafted, all required furniture and equipment are budgeted, and a launch party is scheduled. My Salesforce.com instance shows 61 sub-projects related to it, from setting up an Internet connection, to developing a Return on Investment model. Monolab Incubator
2008-06-04 09:35:00 Over the past couple of years, I have worked with a dozen start-ups in an advisory capacity. Through my interactions with entrepreneurs, and my personal experience starting Intalio, I developed a fair understanding for some of the challenges that most founders face when creating a company. Funding and hiring are among the most complex, and there is no substitute for direct experience there. But there is also a class of logistical problems that can be addressed with simple solutions, and can be shared across multiple companies. Here comes the Monolab|Incubator, which my wife May and I are starting together. [Continue...]
Miscellaneous Updates
2008-05-06 02:49:00 Between Intalio, which staff doubled in size over the past six months, extensive traveling around the world (over 50,000 qualifying miles flown so far this year), the occasional extreme productivity seminar, my training for the commercial pilot license, and the time spent with my family (Cf. Father Pride), I found it difficult to maintain a regular blogging schedule lately. I'm hopeful that I'll find the right pace eventually, but in the meantime, here are some noteworthy updates on various fronts. [Continue...] More About: Updates
On Salesforce.com and Google
2008-04-17 02:14:00 Much has been written over the past two days on the Salesforce .com | Google partnership, and as the dust is settling down, it's time for me to share my first impressions as a user of this pretty cool mashup. Yesterday, Marc Benioff asked me if it made Salesforce.com Office 2.0 worthy, and my reply was a resounding "Yes". In pure Salesforce.com style, reality does not fully match the marketing hype surrounding the announcement, but this first release is real, works, and is the very best Office 2.0 integration I have seen in a long time. So let's take a closer look. [Continue...]

Free/Busy Calendar for Salesforce.com
2008-04-16 03:40:00 Scheduling meetings is a time-wasting collaborative process that no amount of technology will fix until simple APIs get supported by the most popular calendaring applications. One could use scheduling services such as the newly-released Presdo (awesome job Eric!), but it's not (yet) integrated with Salesforce .com. So if you're like me and are using Marc's platform to get things done, you might be interested by this little PHP script that a couple of friends wrote for me. Salesforce.com on iPhone
2008-03-30 20:52:00 Salesforce.com recently demonstrated the iPhone application it will release on iTunes sometime in June. It looks great, but I really could not wait for it. Furthermore, I expect it to support only a subset of the objects I need, and certainly not the custom ones I have created to get things done. Therefore, my friend Ihab and I have been working on a proof of concept application built using an S-Control and running on the iPhone's Safari web browser (no hacks required). Extreme Productivity Seminar Slides
2008-03-29 17:24:00 The first Extreme Productivity Seminar took place yesterday, and based on the feedback we received so far, the concept worked. We managed to cover the entire agenda on time, and everybody was able to build some pretty cool custom objects in Salesforce.com, and some basic integration scenarios with Gmail and LinkedIn. As promised, here are the slides we used for the event. [Continue...] More About: Slides

Process Discovery
2008-03-08 01:31:00 While I'm putting together the liquid cooling system for my new computer, I'd like to share with you some details about the digital asset management process I am planning to manage with it, using Intalio|BPMS as development platform. Doing what most business analysts do when documenting business processes for the first time, I fired my spreadsheet editor of choice (Google Docs in this particular instance), and started filling cells up with lots of information that only human beings can understand. We're at the process discovery stage here, and it really does not matter which tool you use for it. Nevertheless, using an online tool such as Google Docs will make it easier to share your ideas and requirements with others, and to track changes over time. So let's take a look at what we've got. Email Tips
2008-03-07 00:02:00 Like everybody else, I have a love and hate relationship with email, and I have felt more hate than love for SMTP recently. Too many emails to keep track off, and too much spam not being filtered by my email client are contributing to spoil our already strained relationship. Nevertheless, a couple of things can be done to salvage it, especially when using Gmail. Here they are. [Continue...] More About: Email , Tips

Pushing the Envelope
2008-03-06 02:15:00 If you're a test pilot, pushing the envelope is what you do to discover an aircraft's performance limits. I'm just a private pilot, therefore I try to stay away from the boundaries of my aircraft's envelope as much as possible. But there are other envelopes I can play with, and Office 2.0 is one of them. Over the past two years, I have conducted many experiments, attempting to do everything online. I followed the Rules for Office 2.0 religiously, and eventually made it work. Today, using an iPhone and a MacBook Air equipped with a Franklin CDU-680 3G modem, I can get online pretty much anytime and anywhere. I built an Office 2.0 Setup around Gmail and Salesforce.com, and I must say that it's working pretty well. So, what's next? Well, all this works when you're managing megabytes of structured data and gigabytes of documents. But what about hundreds of gigabytes of structured data and tens of terabytes of documents? Can you make the overall workflow scale by three or four ord... More About: Envelope

Extreme Productivity Seminar
2008-01-14 07:28:00 Between Intalio, the Office 2.0 Conference, my flight training as a commercial pilot, and my duties as father of an 11 months old baby girl, I tend to be fairly busy, and many people I meet wonder how I manage to fit all this into regular 24 hour days. In theory, the answer is pretty simple: apply David Allen's Getting Things Done methodology religiously, and use the best tools money can buy. In practice though, it takes a lot of personal discipline, and building a working system took many trials and errors. Today, this Extreme Productivity System is working pretty well, and I have decided to share it with anyone interested. [Continue...] More About: Seminar
