Crumby printers, Epson DX8450
2007-11-05 19:51:00
I bought one of these darn printers awhile back as the cost was not tht much more than some color and black & white print cartridges and this printer is a dog. Probably 25% of the time it can’t feed the paper through the roller and jams itself to smithereens and the racket it makes, jeez. ...

Doing agile, scrum and exploratory testing, who needs a printer
2007-10-29 00:03:00
I’m on a project where they do agile development, scrum and a whole wack of exploratory testing. The scrum meetings are just as I had read about them, a 6 minute standing chat around a table by 9 developers and 3 testers, confirming what they have done in the last 24 hours and what they intend to do in the next 24 hours. Nothing wrong with that, I suppose. They definitely don’t do documentation. The only documentation we have is the acceptance criteria, written by the end user. In fact they have so little documentation that when I asked someone to print something for me the other day, she couldn’t actually print it. She had no printer driver installed on her PC, as she has never had to print anything before as there has never been anything to print. She has been on the project for several years. Have struggled to level 30 on WoW.

2007-10-17 11:58:00
A cousin of mine has found me on Facebook and was she underwhelmed by my page. She found no pictures and one friend. A bit pathetic. I stumbled around my Facebook page and uploaded a couple of pictures, both of which were probably too small. I don’t really get the Facebook thing. It does seem very open. ...

Users performing system test with QTP, oh yeah?
2007-10-12 13:17:00
I had an interview for a position yesterday and it didn’t go well at all. I was interviewed by 3 people and they sat on the opposite of the table very close together staring at me. Their body language was a bit negative. They were suspicious and they were the committee of death, ready to pounce ...

Arthur C. Clarke?s Firstborn unleash a quantum bomb, get out of that
2007-10-10 12:42:00
Got the review copy of Arthur C. Clar ke ’s (and Stephen Baxter’s) new novel ‘Firstborn’. The Firstborn were the mysterious builders of the black monolith, in the 2001 film and book, and the accompanying introductory letter with the book states the Firstborn “are seeking to stop the advance of human civilization by employing a technology indistinguishable from ...

Treo rebooting when reading email, not much use then
2007-10-08 11:56:00
My Treo 650 has started to reboot every time I try and read any email, and email is at least half the reason for having a Treo in the first place. Did a quick search on Google and didn’t immediately find any help that was relevant so instead I decided to setup the Treo software on the ...

Interview for a position or was it just some free consultancy
2007-10-04 15:33:00
I had an interview about a contract position and neither of the interviewees were IT people, I think one came from a statistics background and the other from a management background. Interview s with non IT people about an IT position can often end up in some confusion. Not this time though. They have some software that ...

Stumbling through WoW and Arthur C. Clarke?s Firstborn
2007-10-03 13:29:00
Just seen a demo of Halo 3 and the graphics were great. Smashing aliens in the 25th Century. A friend of mine got it on Tuesday and finished it the following Sunday. Not sure how much value for money he got there. When I mentioned WoW he said he’d never played it but had a couple of friends that ...

Oh great, another telephone interview, putting the lid firmly back on
2007-10-01 16:57:00
Why do people want to give telephone interviews unless it is to filter out people that might not be of the right calibre for a job? Whenever I am after testing staff, if I am sent a resume which I think may be a bit weak or something just doesn’t stack up then usually I will give ...

Playing World of Warcraft, and that?s that
2007-10-01 09:09:00
I started playing WoW last Sunday and since then I have not written a single blog entry. Is there a connection? Yes. It’s taken me 8 days to get to level 15. Dunno whether that is quick or slow. I did get a guidebook on WoW and it does start off a bit preachy. It goes on ...

Chatting to router support people over WOW problem
2007-09-24 14:34:00
I spoke to my WOW failing friend last night and he still hasn’t got it going. But he did have a lengthy chat with a router support person in the US, so has a few things to try. I actually feel guilty when people have problems like this. I’m almost embarressed by the IT business that ...

No incoming data for WOW, got three firewalls running
2007-09-23 17:54:00
I was basically right re my friends World Of Warcraft problem in that his firewall wasn’t allowing incoming WOW data. He had a Norton firewall and the XP firewall running at the same time as well as the firewall on the router so it was a miracle that any outbound WOW data got through. I don’t think ...

2007-09-21 12:57:00
I was talking to an agent that specialises in testing work and he mentioned something called the HSMP, which stands for Highly Skill ed Migrant Program , a visa allowing qualifying people to work in the UK. He said that Cap Gemini take on a load of these people from Asia and pay them a pittance, whilst the company ...

And the affects of Office 2003 SP3 on Vista are???.
2007-09-20 19:12:00
There’s no doubt that since I installed SP3 for Office 2003 my Vista PC has started behaving oddly. Outlook keeps stalling for up to 20 seconds at a time as does IE7, which additionally stalls completely sometimes. I’ve ended up several times starting another instance of IE7 and once even a third instance of IE7, while Vista ...

2007-09-20 16:56:00
Chelsea’s new boss Avram Grant , who may have the backing of the board, well he is on it, but is unlikely to have the backing of the players let alone the fans. Does Abramovich realise what he has done? If Chelsea lose two matches in succession the fans will turn on Grant like a pack of hyenas ...

Office 2003 SP3 update, anything else in there Bill?
2007-09-20 12:10:00
Just visited the Windows Update site and Service Pack 3 for Office 2003 is available, 108.2mb in size. That’s big for Office. I wonder what else is buried in there that they haven’t bothered to tell us about. I can see these kind of updates happening a lot in the future, where you’re told it’s one thing ...

iPhone knock-off arrives, work stops
2007-09-19 15:02:00
The iPhone clone was delivered today - the memorably named CECT P168 - and what fun I’m going to have getting that working. I think it’s a mark 1 version as it doesn’t have Bluetooth on it. Opening the box revealed the phone, earphones, a USB cable and a 256mb microSD card. That’s it. No manual. ...

Gee, what a racket a subwoofer makes
2007-09-19 09:32:00
I got a subwoofer to go with the 42″ TV, Blu-ray player (PS3) and pseudo home cinema with the stereo. As usual I ended up spending more than I wanted to but the sound is great. The subwoofer was made by a Chinese company called Gale, $220. When I first switched it on and the noisy studio logo played I didn’t ...

Vista & HP Deskjet F4100, cover open, shut, open, shut
2007-09-18 14:45:00
I bought a HP F4100 Deskjet printer the other day and it was cheap. Not only that but it was very noisy, slow to start, had terrible problems feeding paper through the rollers and the driver/software were hopeless. When I installed the drivers and software it did check the HP site to see if there were ...

Zeppelin Fillmore West 1969 concert on net, creaks a bit
2007-09-17 18:54:00
I found a web site where you can hear a whole load of 1970’s and 1980’s concert tapes of bands of that era, the sort of bands that got bootlegged to hell then. I think I remember reading that they are Bill Graham’s own concert tapes, where I assume he was the promoter. The site - ...

Microsoft wasting time and an untold story by Alan Bennett
2007-09-17 12:04:00
Agent emailed me this morning about the Microsoft interview, which was supposed to be tomorrow and, provided I didn’t screw up, I’d start on Wednesday. She was waiting to hear from them for the exact time of the interview. Later, I get another email from her saying Microsoft have pulled the interview as all roles ...

Home cinema, warned off Sony, use stereo instead
2007-09-16 15:00:00
I went to the local hi-fi shop, and I do mean old fashioned expensive hi-fi type of place, great for advice though, and asked for a demo of a Sony home cinema system, only they didn’t stock any. Not sure if they sold any Sony gear at all but the salesman was dead set against Sony home ...

Got too many Zeppelin bootlegs ->eBay?
2007-09-15 13:28:00
Just dug up a load more Zeppelin bootlegs that I’ve started listening to, and there are too many: ‘All That Jazz - Montreux 14th March 1970′ (2CD), an audience sludge of sound recording. ‘Bath 28/06/70′ (2CD), ditto. ‘Brussels Affair’ (2CD), very good soundboard recording from 1980. Tight. ‘Burn Like A Candle’ (3CD), very good audience recording, from Los Angeles, ...

2007-09-14 19:28:00
I needed to scan in some documents on the old HP PSC2355 all-in-one printer recently and it didn’t work. The tempting way to scan is to hit the scan button on the printer but the little LED displays a message that that functionality needs to be invoked from the PC using HP’s less than easy to ...
