Get five Gameloft games at bargain prices
2010-03-19 15:11:00
Here’s some good news to start your weekend. To celebrate the arrival of Spring, Gameloft has slashed the price of five of its top iPhone games to just a dollar each until Sunday 21 March. The discounted games include the excellent Dungeon Hunter, an RPG classic that offers hours of dungeon-exploring hack and slash action. The 3D graphics in this one are some of the best we’ve seen from an iPhone game so far this year. Real Soccer 2010 is also included in the promotion. The game beats the pants off of EA’s FIFA 2010, and makes for a great way to warm up for the World Cup. It features real teams, players and stadiums, as well as in-game commentary. You can also hook up and play against your buddies over WiFi. Completing the line-up of Gameloft’s Spring Fever sale are Earthworm Jim, Skater Nation and Blades of Fury. Hurry though, because the deal will end on Sunday 21st March (officially the first day of Spring) and the prices will go back up after that. ItR...

iPhone: Final Fantasy is the granddaddy of all adventure role playing games. Now the first part in the long running series is available for iPhone users to enjoy. Final Fantasy sees you take control of a group of four young adventurers, known as the Light Warriors. Their job is to work together to save their world by completing a series of quests, exploring, solving puzzles, acquiring weapons, and battling enemies in order to progress through the world. Windows : The so called browser war is getting tougher, with competitors always trying to offer the best features . Opera 10.50, the latest version of the popular app, is good proof of it. This new version includes new Javascript engine and graphic library for faster speed, improvements to Opera’s look and feel and private browsing. Mac: One of the problems with teleconferencing software is that it either performs poorly, costs a lot of money, or only works on one platform. That isn’t the case with Yugma which is quite sim...

Timewaster: Sushi Cat
2010-03-18 18:04:00
As any cat lover will know, there’s nothing cats like more than being dropped into a basket while eating Sushi . And cats like reggae more than any other music genre, which makes Sushi Cat more of a simulation than anything else. Sushi Cat is a strangely pleasing game, with a row of baskets at the bottom, which you drop cats into. The cats will fall and bounce through obstacles on their way to the baskets below, getting fatter as they eat sushi!. It’s a little bit tactical, as you need to feed your cats enough sushi before you run out of cats to drop. Getting high score baskets can be tricky too. The cute, well animated graphics make Sushi Cat look really cool, and the levels get better and more inventive as you progress. You could waste a lot of time on this game… As usual, it requires the Flash plug-in and is playable from your browser.

Top 5 free video converters for Mac
2010-03-18 17:49:00
There are so many video formats out there that it’s inevitable that one day, you’ll end up stuck with a video file in a format that either won’t play or that you can’t work with. There’s no need to give up though because there are several free and easy solutions on Mac that will convert video into the format of your choice for free. MPEG Streamclip This is my converter of choice and it has never let me down. It’s hard to believe that MPEG Streamclip is free to use, such is its power and range. It can convert just about anything from DV to AIFF and it even handles audio too. There are a lot of preferences for professionals but its straightforward enough for beginners to use too. I find it invaluable when needing to convert footage for editing. HandBrake This is ideal for ripping and converting DVDs although it only outputs in MP4 and MKV format. HandBrake gives you control over which DVD chapters you want to rip, whether you want to keep subtitles...

The ugliest iPhone icons of all time
2010-03-17 18:10:00
Cool application icons are what help to make iPhones look so damn sexy. Install the wrong program though and you could end up destroying your street cred completely. While most developers take special care over the design of their icons, there are some who seem to knock them up in five minutes without really thinking about it. I’ve scoured the App Store for the biggest icon monstrosities around. Since installing all these apps on my iPhone, my girlfriend’s dumped me, all my friends have deserted me, and I feel decidedly queasy every time I look at my phone. Let us know if you’ve found a worse icon than any of these aberrations  Gross   Extreme World Records An eye- popping icon that I never want to see on my iPhone Dark Stupid Deal of the Day Let’s hope Musician’s Friend’s cheap deals are easier to spot than it’s logo is on the icon  Amateurish Funny Flash Cards Where to start with this one? The freakish image, the poor cutting out, or th...

First look at Internet Explorer 9 Platform Preview
2010-03-17 15:51:00
After unveiling Internet Explorer 9 for the first time at the Professional Developers Conference in 2009, Microsoft has finally made a first version of its new browser available for download. Well, not exactly. What you get when hitting the download link on Microsoft’s website is not what I’d call a web browser; it’s more of a web-capable playground with a bunch of testing links that lets you check all the new features included in the all new Internet Explorer 9. A stripped-down tool with testing material provided by the developers themselves is not really the perfect environment for trying out a brand new web browser. But at least Microsoft allows us to take a sneak peek at the new capabilities coming up in Internet Explorer 9, even if it’s still at a very early stage of development. It’s great to see how the new JavaScript multicore engine is much faster, and renders seamless, smooth animations in graphics, text and maps. Most of the tests are orien...

Happy St. Patrick?s Day!
2010-03-17 13:36:00
Whether you’re Irish, Irish-American or just plain happy it’s St. Patrick ’s Day, let me show you some of the meanest, greenest ways to decorate your computer this March 17! The easiest way is to make sure Firefox is looking its best with Personas. I’m rocking Irish Shamrocks at the moment, and I have to say, it’s really cute. If ‘Celticizing’ your browser isn’t enough, try a theme for your PC. This Images of Ireland Desktop Theme for Windows XP is a great option for all you traditionalists out there, a lovely peaceful theme that includes some of Ireland’s most popular sights, all supplied by the national tourist board, so you know you’re getting the real deal. At the other end of the theme spectrum, we’ve got this fun (but slightly mind-boggling) Sponge Bobs Happy St. Patrick’s Day theme, so if standing stones and freckled children aren’t your thing, you’ve still got plenty of options. If you’...

iPhone: You know how those cute mogwais turn into Gremlins when fed after midnight? Well, that’s very much like the experience of playing Fling! At first, you’ll be taken in by the cute little characters, sweet music and simple gameplay. Once you get past the first few levels though, Fling! turns into a beast of a game, becoming so infuriatingly difficult that you’ll probably want to explode your iPhone in the microwave. Windows : Popcorn, soda, the couch and your laptop. You have everything ready to enjoy your favorite movie on the PC? except for the proper video codecs! Don?t let a missing codec ruin your video experience: use SMPlayer, a free video player that plays almost any format - regardless of their codec - and has other great features. Mac: For audio editing, look no further than open source wonder Audacity. You can record live, convert old records and tapes to digital, cut, copy and splice files and much more. Note that this stable version is no longer u...

5 tools to improve your typing speed
2010-03-17 11:40:00
If you’ve been using computers for as long as me, you can probably type quite well without looking at the keyboard. Improving your typing speed and accuracy has become increasingly important in today’s world, where computers, smartphones and other keyboard-equipped devices are almost omnipresent. Typing faster means you can get your work done more quickly, answer your emails in a few minutes and update your blog by the end of the day, all in a much more efficient way. However, there are still people who use just two fingers to type. If you’re among them, don’t worry: you can count on software utilities, web apps and other tools to help you improve your speed and accuracy when typing. These are some of them: RapidTyping - Improve your typing by learning the right hand position and training specific groups of letters. The program then lets you use custom texts for advanced typing training, and keeps detailed statistics about your performance and improvement. T...

Need for Speed World - a racing MMO!
2010-03-16 18:13:00
World of Warcraft is all very well, but there’s one thing I always felt was missing: Ferraris*. Luckily, EA has stepped in to save the day with Need for Speed World. This promises an enormous Need For Speed open world where player can explore and race each other. Not to be outdone by World of Warcraft, it will include role-playing level systems, so you can gain experience points and improve your ride as you progress. Test Drive Unlimited was the first open world style online racing game, but Need for Speed World promises to be bigger, brasher and busier. Not to mention playable on PC! It will be free to play, with optional micro payments for upgrades like in BattleField Heroes. Head over to the Need for Speed World page and sign up for the beta - there are limited places, but they’ll give out more and more as time goes on. While the Need for Speed series hasn’t always been great, I think this is a really exciting prospect. *I am well aware the car in the picture is...

A look at Paltalk for Windows and Mac
2010-03-16 17:57:00
If you like chat rooms where you can chat anonymously with different people from around the world on a huge variety of topics, then Paltalk may interest you. Note that Paltalk is also confusingly known as PaltalkScene and on Mac and Linux, where it only works in a web browser, it’s also known as PaltalkExpress. Paltalk is a US based service that claims to have over 4 million users. One of the biggest attractions of Paltalk to those users is that you can log on at any time, activate your webcam, and chat away in high quality audio and video. A few years ago however, Paltalk hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons after a British user committed suicide online after receiving a barrage of insults in an “Insult” chat room. Since then, Paltalk have placed greater restrictions on adult content and added an adult content blocker switch to the top of the interface which you can activate at any time. Let’s take a look at the Windows version first then. When you fi...

How to: Stop a Windows shutdown
2010-03-16 15:12:00
We’ve all been there. In fact, I was there just yesterday, happily pressing “next, next” in a long installation process. Just a microsecond too late, however, I realized I had accidentally told the program to restart my system. Unsaved documents, half-finished reviews and long strings of tabs disappeared before my eyes. I looked frantically around for some way of stopping it, a big red button perhaps, or a giant STOP lever. Of course, there wasn’t one. To make sure you don’t fall victim to the same problem, I’m going to show you how to stop an unwanted system shutdown or restart. The easiest way is to create an abort shutdown/restart shortcut. To do this, right click on the desktop and select New > Shortcut. In the box that appears, type shutdown.exe -a. Then call the shortcut whatever you like, and place it somewhere easy to access- in the taskbar if you like. The next time you accidentally tell your computer to shut down or restart, double ...

Start your own live internet radio station for free
2010-03-15 17:24:00
I’m a wannabe radio star and I’ve already got a few podcasts under my belt. But for a long time I’ve been looking for a way to broadcast a live show over the internet. I lost patience trying to learn how to use Shoutcast and found uBroadcast to be too unstable. Last week I discovered Spreaker, an online application that lets you broadcast live radio for free. Within 10 minutes of signing up to the service I was on air, pumping out my favorite tunes and talking to the listeners. By sharing I managed to get about 50 live listeners too, who were impressed by the quality of the broadcast (if not, my presentation skills). So, here’s a quick guide to how to start your own internet radio station using Spreaker: 1. Visit Spreaker.com and click on the Go on air now link then complete the sign-up process. You’ll receive an account verification email, with a link which you need to click to activate the account.  2. This is the page where all your past and current...

Software updates are killing my user experience!
2010-03-15 15:57:00
The most important thing to me about technology is that it functions. Over the last couple of years, most of the computing devices I use have gotten worse. Why? Updates. 50% of the time I switch them on I am informed I need to update software. My Mac , Xbox, iPhone and PC at work are all victims, and they are stealing my precious time! I used to be excited about new versions of applications, but now I hardly ever even notice the difference after updating, and couldn’t care less. I’m not against cool new developments or security fixes, but I can’t help feeling many of the updates I receive aren’t really for me, but for the developers. When I turn on a machine I want it to start, and when I open an application it’s because I want to use it: I don’t want to be told to update things. If I find the application doesn’t work properly for me, I’d be happy to look for an update. I don’t need reminding. I have had iPhone apps update twice i...

Steam for Mac - time to ditch your PC?
2010-03-12 15:02:00
If you’ve got a Mac but still hold onto a PC it’s probably for one main reason - gaming. But Valve’s decision to release Steam for Macs in April will mean that eventually, those Mac users can throw away their PCs for good. If you’ve never used it, Steam is a hugely popular download and update manager through which you can download games such as Half Life, Left 4 Dead 2 and Team Fortress. Steam for Windows has had almost 1.3 million downloads on Softonic so far which gives you an idea of its awesome popularity. And its release on Macs could spell bad news for the PC gaming industry. PCs currently dominate the gaming landscape due to a number of reasons. The main one is simply that more people own PCs than Macs - in large part because they are seen as cheaper which as I’ve argued before is largely a misguided notion anyway nowadays - therefore that’s where the money lies for games developers. Second is that Macs have traditionally been seen as more ...

IGF winners announced
2010-03-12 14:25:00
The 12th annual Independent Games Festival has announced its winners, and Monaco, the ’stylish’ co-op game from Pocketwatch has come out on top with the main prize as well as the excellence in Design award. You can’t play this game yet, and unfortunately that’s true of many of this years winners. However, there are three you can play from your browser, and they’re all favorites of mine. First is Closure, the dark, claustrophobic game I covered a year ago (you can play it there). Then there’s the absolutely great Continuity, winner of the Student Showcase Award. It has the same enigmatic cool that viral hit Canabalt has,  but requires thought and more than one button to play! The third you can play is Max and the Magic Marker.  This is a cute platformer, where you aid hero Max with your Magic Marker, which can draw platforms and more in his cartoon world. That requires plugin Unity, whereas the others use Flash. I’m looking forward to playin...

Reader Play: Is Google getting desperate?
2010-03-11 19:33:00
When Google launched Buzz on an unsuspecting public a few weeks ago, I don’t think anyone was prepared for the backlash it would unleash. I actually felt sorry for them - they made a mistake, admitted it quickly and made changes, even though Buzz has gone down as one of the least impressive internet apps in recent times. My friends don’t find it interesting because their friends don’t, I’m not interested because they’re not interested, and so on. It’s a vicious circle. A boring vicious circle… It wasn’t a major fail, however, and Google and their ill-fated enterprise had all but faded from my mind. That is, until this morning, when I opened up Google Reader. Google Reader Play ? The intro screen looked good, so I pressed Get Started. Let’s just get something straight. I have various Reader accounts, and this one is just for work. Of course, Reader doesn’t know that, but from scanning my content and starred items, it should ...

MSN Video Player brings yet more online TV on-demand
2010-03-11 18:31:00
Microsoft today launched the full version of its TV-on-demand service, MSN Video Player. The online app allows UK users to watch full episodes of popular TV programs for free within their browser. Viewers can tune into a catalog of entire series of classic British shows including Doctor Who, Footballers’ Wives, League of Gentlemen, Peep Show, and Sahara. MSN has managed to muster up content from BBC Worldwide, as well as studios such as Endemol, RDF Media and the Digital Rights Group. MSN Video Player looks great and includes an attractive, easy-to-use interface, along with a Bing-powered video search. Videos can be enjoyed in full screen, and there’s a cool dim lights setting that darkens the page surrounding the video. Despite the quality of the product, I have serious doubts about the chances of success for MSN Video Player. Had it been launched three years ago it would’ve been hailed as a revolution in the way we consume television. In reality though, British ...

Top apps to improve your iPhone camera and photos
2010-03-11 12:03:00
The iPhone’s camera may not have the most pixels, but it can take impressive photos. Unfortunately, the native camera app is really basic, so here are some apps to help! Take better Pictures: Grid Cam - Composition isn’t my strong point with photography, and this simple app helps a lot. It adds a grid to the screen, making it easy to think about the composition of your photograph. Grid Cam also adds a spirit level to the center of the screen so your there’s no excuse for wonky pictures! Darkroom - Blurry photos are often caused by shaky hands, and Darkroom fixes this in two ways. Firstly it increases the shutter speed, and secondly it picks a stable moment to take a photo giving you a much better chance of a crisp result. It’s not perfect, but will stop you getting blurred images. Edit your pictures: Photo Shop Mobile - If you want to add an effect, alter the focus or color saturation of a picture, the most user friendly app is Photoshop. It really takes advan...

Ad blockers: Are they harming the websites you love?
2010-03-10 18:26:00
A while ago, I reviewed a program called AdBlock Plus, a popular Firefox add-on that nukes the annoying ads that get in the way when you’re browsing. It is super-effective, stripping ads from the screen and leaving only clean, white space in their place. As anyone who has ever spent more than 30 seconds on the internet knows, you’ll soon be assaulted by blinking, buzzing and flashing ads, my personal favorites being the ones that slide out and cover whatever it is you’re trying to read. I thought AdBlock Plus was really cool and gave it a great rating, but just the other day I read this article by Ars Technica which made me stop and think. Could blocking ads be hurting my favorite websites? Once you think about it, it’s obvious that websites that don’t charge for content have to make money some other way. One of these ways is advertising, and if we get rid of that advertising with an ad blocker, it can’t generate the revenue that maintains the we...

Google adds bicycling routes to Maps
2010-03-10 15:42:00
Now there’s no excuse not to leave your computer and get on your bike. Google has finally launched a cycle route mapping addition to Google Maps. What makes it different from other features on Google Maps? The new biking feature plots routes that have been specifically designed with cyclists in mind. So no more setting off on your cycle route only to get blocked by a vehicles only road or other obstacle. At the moment, the service only works in the USA and it’s still in beta. It’s also quite limited. If you try to plot anything more than a few kilometers, it will usually tell you that the route can’t be plotted and offer you walking or driving alternatives instead. Google is encouraging users to correct them where they discover problems or blockages on routes. Much of the data currently used has been provided by the Rails-To-Trails Conservancy and while usually accurate, changes to routes can of course happen at any time. Luckily, there’s a bunch of apps that let you follow the action on your phone while you’re out and about. Here’s my pick of the best F1 apps for all the various mobile platforms.
