A friend of mine gave me a script on enabling and disabling the registry tool. This VBS script can be very helpful if you're infected with a certain virus that blocks the registry. It's really unlucky of me, the first check point of the BayanihanSEO Paradise Philippines Keyword Contest waah and my paradisephilippines.freeweb7.com site is currently offline due to technical problems on the freeweb7.com host. Until now, the service is still not UP. Maybe it's not really for me. I do want to register for a domain and host of my own but  money is really a problem. I don't have a credit card, don't have yet. Maybe next year if God will allow it I'll try to have my own domain name and paid host registered. Well for now just "MANTINeR!" = a local dialect that means just 'STICK ON IT' because I can't do anything about it, not just yet. Well that's life!

Last week, I just finished setup the file server for our school and I try using other unix-based systems / linux OS like the Ubuntu for Server, PC-BSD1.4 and OpenSuse but still I end up using OpenSuse10.3 KDE. Maybe because it has a friendly interface that is already familiar with me, (specially it's YAST). But the problem I encounter was the OS was not able to detect the SIS Ethernet device (build-in) of the new CPU we buy so I decided to use the old Realtek ethernet card (add-on card) I borrowed from one of the old Pentium IV computer.  I tried searching for solutions on different Suse forums but what I found was the same problem I encountered and there's no solution yet given for this matter.  [1]  10.3 version of OpenSuse can be installed now using one disk installation (unlike previous version 3 disks are needed for the installation. There's a strain of computer virus/worm that hide itself using the name SCVHOST.EXE or SCVHOSTS.EXE, (don't mistaken it as SVCHOST.EXE, it's one of the vital programs of Windows, see the difference in spelling). It was detected as W32/YahLover.Worm .gen of McAfee Antivirus and as Win32/Autorun.R.worm by NOD32. This virus infects your computer by different means.One is it install itself in autorun.inf in Open option of the AUTORUN. Once you double click it will run and start spreading itself to your system. The other event that I observed is it copy itself through all the shared files of the computers on your network and install itself in the registry entries remotely using a GUEST account (through System:Remote). The competition is really tough for me I guess but it doesn't matter. There's a blogging engine that does not require database and that is the Flatpress which can be downloaded on http://www.flatpress.org/. The software requires only a webserver that is PHP enabled and it's theme is very easy to customized and has a WordPress look on it. It is recommended for bloggers out there that wishes to have a blog site but have a limited web server features (no MySQL).Flatpress is written in PHP and free for use. It's still under development but it's already functional. So if you want to own website for a year, you can only spend at almost $4.00/month (i.e. Php 2,000+/Year) for domain registration and hosting (Linux HOSTING Only without MySQL).

It's been a year since the last chess tournament of the Capiz Chess Association , Inc. Now this coming Sept ember 22, 2007 Saturday at Gaisano City, Roxas City, Capiz our chess association launches its 1st tournament this year. A Grand Prix Chess Tournament, 10-minute time control, best of two games will be played by 32 chess players from all over province of Capiz. The tournament will be a "warm-up" activity for incoming tournaments this December (Sinadya-Halaran Chess Tournament which was previously sponsored by Cong. Preventing AUTORUN.INF to autorun - Part two

As a follow up entry for my blog entitled Viruses that uses AUTOURUN.INF [1], there is another way of preventing autorun.inf to be used as a way of running viruses every time you double click your drive and future infection of autorun.inf, (aside from changing the registry). One way is to create a folder on your drives named AUTORUN.INF. This will prevent for AUTORUN.INF-viruses to create their autorun.inf on your drives because it can't override the folder that you've just created. Now, if you can't create a folder AUTORUN.INF because it generates an access denied there's a possibility that there's an autorun.inf that is currently existing. Fixing the SUSE Gray Login Screen

Usually a gray login screen (XDM login screen) displays after a re-installation or repairing an installation of SUSE (or maybe corruption of KDM which requires you to reinstall it). To fix this problem and to go back to the nice KDM login screen, login as ROOT on the current gray login screen then LEFT CLICK on the screen and select XTERM. From the terminal window type startkde to start the KDE then go to YAST then click on System ->etc/sysconfig Editor ->Desktop->Display Manager->DISPLAY MANAGER setting (as shown below). Change the setting of the DISPLAY MANAGER from XDM to KDM, then click Finish. Reboot the system and the original KDM login manager will be displayed and gray login screen will disappear. I've read a P600,000 SEO contest launched by MACALUA.COM, and I'm really interested to join so I can gain more experience in SEO (I'm still young in SEO at about 6 months old but I'm old already at the age of 29, hehehe). Viruses that uses Autorun.INF

There are several viruses that uses the autorun.inf to spread itself such as the Bacalid (hides itself in ctfmon.exe) and the RavMon.EXE. These viruses set its file attributes to System+Hidden+Read-Only attributes so some anti-viruses will have a hard time detecting or finding them. These viruses save itself in the root directory of every available drives of the current infected computer and runs itself every time you Double-Click the drive. In USB Sticks and CDs that are infected by the virus runs automatically especially if drive autorun is enabled for the current drives (which is usually by default, autorun for drives are enabled).  Autorun.INF is usually used by CD Installers to autoplay their installations but Hard disks by default should not have AUTORUN.INF in the drive. Chess Engine The Beginning, Again!

Last year I started making a chess engine (a program that is considered to be the 'brain' of chess game programs), but I stop developing it because I was so busy of my work. Now, I'm still busy but I'm really interested continuing the program I started last year. My problem was I lost the code of my previous chess engine because I formatted my hard disk last summer so I'll start again from scratch :( waaahhh. Starting from:  Move Generation, Searching Moves using Alpha-Beta, Quies, Null-Move Forwarding, Etc. and Move Evaluation (Opening, Middle, End game). Honestly, I'm a green horn to this kind of thing but I'm really interested in finishing it and I want to be at least the 3rd Filipino programmer that develop a competitive Chess Engine at least maybe the first programmer from Capiz that develops a chess engine that can compete to international tournament (DREAM BIG! hehehe)  :). I'm planning to use Visual C++ 2005 Express Edition but late...

Linux Script that Adds New Samba Users

I did have a hard time looking for information regarding linux scripts that adds new samba users (many users) so I decided to log the script I made to add new samba users. I tried to use the method that some sites suggested that copies the /etc/passwd to /etc/samba/smbpasswd via cat < /etc/passwd | makesmbpasswd.sh > /etc/samba/smbpasswd, but this does not work. By the way, I'm using Samba 3.025d under OpenSuse 10.2 So i tried to figure it out by conducting a trial and error 'experiments' :) and luckily I did it. I'm really sad about the announcement of Microsoft that they will not continue developing Visual Foxpro . I was waiting this past few months if this facts will change and I guess its hopeless. And even petitions and appeals from different visual foxpro users all over the world to Microsoft can't really change their decisions on Visual Foxpro development.I'm just hoping that Visual Foxpro can still survive after being abandoned by Microsoft. I hope Visual Foxpro will have an openFoxpro later that can be used in Linux/Unix-based systems.

wheewww....I mentioned in my previous blog that our school will be using Squid + Dansguardian for our proxy server. Now, I already seen the problem why I was not able to configure the Safe Squid properly and decided to use it instead of the above setup. The problem I encounter when I was setting it up was every time I change the Run Level of the safesquid or to start it during boot time, it always hang. Yesterday after noon, I checked the init.d script of the safesquid and I saw the problem. The installation I've downloaded from their website install the safesquid script to init.d. At the status part of the script, I saw an infinite loop because the script calls the status function inside the status function causing it to have infinite loop. So I tried to remove the line that caused the infinite loop and then after that I was able to configure the safesquid properly to start it during boot. I'm a kind of guy who loves to study new things and new versions of operating system. Last year I setup a file server for our school to serve at least 100 computers to be used by our students as their workspace. I use the FreeBSD 6.0 + Samba for that purpose. Now this summer I setup a different O.S. for the school, that would be openSUSE 10.2, (honestly I'm still average when it comes to setting-up Linux systems and I'm still studying!!!)Now I'm done with the configuration of the setup. Visual FoxPro is one of the fastest database program in the market. It is used for small scale database applications. Its limit of 2GB for its database tables makes it for small scale only.  It does not have a feature that secures the data (unlike MS Access you can assign a password for your database).  I will recommend Visual Foxpro + MySQL5 + FreeBSD or LINUX platform to solve this kind of problem and boost the speed and data security of client/server applications for a smaller fee (actually MySQL5 and FreeBSD or LINUX are all downloadable for free from their respective websites. Of course, you can purchase a copy of Visual Foxpro from Microsoft :D ).This combination for me is more practical and cheapest compare to other software combinations. Computer Virus attacks HC Lab!

There's a strain of computer virus that infects the file server and workstations of the computer laboratory of Hercor College [1], Roxas City, Capiz, Philippines. It hides itself by using the name ctfmon.exe (Ctfmon.exe monitors the active windows and provides text input service support for speech recognition, handwriting recognition, keyboard, translation, and other alternative user input technologies.) It was detected by TrendMicro 2007 as PE_VBAC.A virus and as MianCrypt.Gen virus by AVAST.The said virus hides itself inside a folder named Recycled. The folder has a hidden/system/read-only attribute, that's why you can't see it if you will use the Search window.
