Fitness and the Geek
2009-05-19 12:04:00
I am not old. I still play computer games. I enjoy a competitive game of cricket or soccer as much as the next guy. I like playing games with the nieces and nephews and should someone challenge me to a race (running or cycling), I'll probably accept no matter how badly I will lose. I'm also not young either. I'm two years away from turning the ripe old age of 30.  read more »

Creating Games - Wouldn't you want to?
2009-05-14 09:04:00
Every now and then my brain latches onto some obscure topic and it goes into overdrive mode. I then need to learn everything possible about said topic. After a while though, I get tired of it and for some reason it stays forgotten. Very rarely though, a topic interests me enough that at some stage of my "strange interests" life cycle, my brain will want to revisit the topic to see what has changed.  read more »

What I did
2009-05-13 13:34:00
So I've been quite busy the last few weeks. I went to watch two movies in the last three weeks, which has got to be some kind of record for me. First off, I watched the new X-Men Origins: Wolverine movie on release day and then last night, I went to watch the new Star Trek movie. First off, if you haven't seen these movies, don't read on, there are potential spoilers ahead. I will try not too delve into too much detail.  read more »

Omegle - Strange and Wonderful
2009-05-06 21:34:00
I know I haven't posted in a while, but this is just too good to pass on! So I'm making time to post this. Check out the following website called Omegle. It allows you to chat with a complete stranger... at random. Whenever you want. It's a quirky idea, but I suddenly found myself chatting to complete strangers for no reason at all... and enjoying it! Maybe it's because I can finally overlook the parental advice warning us 'not to talk to strangers' and be quite safe about it?

Prevention is better than cure
2009-03-31 14:48:00
Never have the above words been more true. The network at my offices (both Cape Town and Johannesburg) have been hit by the deadly Conficker virus and the network has been crippled. I was up till early Monday morning (yes, 3AM) writing domain logon scripts to try and get the infected PC's patched. The sad thing thing, this was an easily preventable situation. Microsoft has known about the vulnerability for a very long time.  read more »

Reminiscing about LAN's...
2009-03-13 18:48:00
It's been a while since I've blogged (seems to be turning into an unfortunate trend) but this time around I do have a few excuses. I had a hectic week at the office with systems falling over, data getting lost and all the usual juicy tidbits. Last weekend though, I had an even better excuse... I was at my first LAN in about... two years? I can't wax enough lyrical about how absolutely AWESOME it was.  read more »

Case in point: DRM breaks Gears of War for PC (Updated with apology)
2009-01-31 22:34:00
Not too long ago, I wrote a blog entry regarding games and restrictive DRM. As if to prove my point, I have a colleague at work who has complained that his game has stopped working. Please note, his is an original copy of the game that he bought at a local computer store. So I went to take a look online. He's not the only one with the problem.  read more »

Webcomics - Bumper Edition
2009-01-25 21:34:00
Every morning before I start working I go through a little ritual. I open my Firefox and I go through my list of daily webcomics one by one. It's what keeps me sane. I spend about 15 minutes catching up on my favourite characters and their adventures... or in some cases misadventures. I'd like to take you through a list of my favourite webcomics as well as tell you a little bit about the author (where possible) and here and there I'll probably get a little personal as well. So in no particular order:  read more »

Life Happens...
2009-01-13 19:07:00
So it's been a while since I have blogged. On one side of the coin, I feel guilty, as my blog really is something quite personal to me. A place where I can vent, discuss, share, opine (is that even a word?) and just plain get my thoughts out of my head. The flipside of the coin reflects something different though. Life has been hectic and I really don't feel guilty for taking some 'me time'. The last few months have been somewhat of a blur and it has only been the last week or so that things finally started feeling normal again.  read more »
DRM - What is it good for?
2008-11-19 05:42:00
If you're a gamer, you might know at least a little bit about Digital Rights Management. At the very least you might have heard of it. Digital Rights Management or DRM as it is more commonly known, is a digital (software or hardware) method for publishers and developers to try and protect their product from being copied or distributed illegally. DRM can be found in many forms and can be used to protect digital content like software applications and downloaded MP3 files.  read more »

Blizzard games anyone?
2008-10-14 21:22:00
So with Blizzcon that came to an end this weekend, there is quite a bit of news to disseminate. Living in South Africa (with regards to low bandwidth speeds, etc) means not being that excited about Blizzard 's super popular MMORPG game, World of Warcraft or it's upcoming expansion, Wrath of the Lich King. I acknowledge the fact that the game is considered as history in the making with regards to it's success as one of the first great games to truly capture the MMORPG market. Fact of the matter is, I still don't have the time (or the bandwidth) to truly enjoy it. So this post will be about the two games that I can (and most probably will) enjoy, when they are finally released. Star Craft 2 and Diablo 3.  read more »

Searching
2008-10-13 08:09:00
So I'm looking for 6 preferably unmarked metal dice. If its marked that fine but it needs to be hard so I can drill A hole through it and put a chain on it. It also needs to be engraved. This is a little project I'm busy helping with. Does anyone know where I can get some? Thanx

Aardklop... klop... klop...
2008-10-06 18:31:00
What a crazy weekend. We went to my in-laws in Potchefstroom for the weekend. It was a two-pronged approach really. One, we get to visit with the family which is something I always enjoy. Two, we get to experience another crazy weekend of Aardklop. We went there filled with hope and excitement at seeing what the show has to offer again. Entrance is free, the food is great (especially the GIANT 38cm diameter pancakes) and the atmosphere is electrifying. And then you stop to look at the people around you. What do you see?  read more »

Game Development tutorial
2008-06-01 11:19:00
I'm busy looking for resources on the net regarding game development. The biggest questions that most aspiring developers have are: "What should I write my game with? Which programs? Which tools should I use?" All of these are very good questions and they have been bothering me for a while.  read more »

Another one bites the dust
2008-05-27 12:11:00
All right, another game finished on the Xbox! This time around, I finished Halo 3, the third (and some think final) in the series of Halo games developed by Bungie Studios. It took me quite a while though, but one thing I can say about Halo, is that this is really a game where the story is epic. There is no other description for it. Everything you do feels bigger, better, more refined than both the Halo games before it.  read more »

One year already?
2008-05-22 22:23:00
I missed it (by almost a month!) but rather late than never! Geekworld is officially one year old. I made the first post on the 28th of April, 2007. I started this blog hoping it would be a place where I could share, opine, vent and just plain talk about stuff that interests me. In less than a year, I also opened it up for a select few friends who might have the same reasons I have for putting words on the 'net. So that other people might read them. Hopefully they have enjoyed it as much as I have.  read more »

Could it be?
2008-05-14 23:39:00
I can't believe that I didn't pick up on this before, but my cousin sent me an email with some interesting subject matter. Before I get to that though, who remembers the blog post by Kupo a few months back that challenged everyone to take their favourite book (or books) and turn it into a movie? While I had the best intention of actually doing something big for the challenge... life got in the way. It happens to the best of us. In the aforementioned email though, someone went and took my book that I wanted to turn into a movie... and made it a TV series.  read more »

Jack Thompson: At it again
2008-05-08 07:41:00
For those of you who don't know, Jack Thompson is an American lawyer and activist, who has taken it upon himself to be a crusader against violent video games. One of his favourite targets has always been the Grand Theft Auto series of video games, which he likes to dub as murder simulators.  read more »

GTA IV madness
2008-05-07 07:53:00
So GTA IV hasn't been out for very long, and already the media has got stories to run with. Apparently, a man waiting in line for the game stabbed another man while in said line. His reasons haven't been made clear yet, but police are looking for him. Like the author of the article said, we're going to have to give this one to the media... there's no way we can defend the "video games don't cause violence" point on this one! Original story here.

Who is Vernon Koekemoer?
2008-04-18 13:20:00
Who is Vernon Koekemoer? He seems to be South Africa's answer to Chuck Norris. He has become an overnight internet celebrity. It first started when someone took this picture of dear Vernon: Vernon was spotted at a local rave called H2O that is held quite frequently in Boksburg. Apparantly (and I didn't know this) Boksburg is the "clubbing capital of South Africa". You could have fooled me.  read more »

It's been a while...
2008-04-08 13:41:00
Myself or my fellow bloggers haven't blogged in a while and I apologise for that... well for myself at least, the rest have to apologise for themselves! A lot has happened so I might as well just fill everyone in on everything. My wife and I went for a short holiday (about a week) to go visit my parents in Cape Town.  read more »

Hobby-X
2008-03-11 15:01:00
So my wife and I took the nephews and nieces out to Hobby -X, a local Hobby exposition that was held at the Coca-Cola Dome this past weekend. I also visited the Rage expo at the same event a few months earlier. It wasn't a bad expo. We saw some awesome Meccano structures and vehicles. Someone was even so ambitious as to build a 3-headed dragon from Meccano! It was brilliant.  read more »

Gears of War!

Fitness Frenzy
2008-02-22 08:40:00
Haven't blogged in a while and I guess that's one of the dangers of a busy/active lifestyle. I've been trying to get my fitness and health levels in a better state and it's been going good so far. The squash games have been keeping my fitness levels up and I'm eating healthier as well as drinking more water. It helps. We've even gone so far as to start a local squash league at the office and we've got eight people playing in the league already.  read more »

RTS-mode on!
2008-02-12 11:17:00
It looks like I'm in an RTS mood (mode?) at the moment. I've started playing StarCraft at the office (after hours, of course) and I finished the single-player campaign of Dawn of War this weekend. Going to start the Dawn of War: Winter Assault expansion sometime this week.  read more »

Welcome to... The Movies!
2008-02-05 12:58:00
This builds on from Tiny's previous post. I am putting my neck out there when I say that the greater majority of geeks like to read. (That is not to say that the greater majority of readers are geeks, although it might be true). What I am proposing here is relatively simple. Think of your favourite book/series of books.  read more »
