Do people still read?
2008-01-28 15:31:00
I've just finished reading two books in the last two weeks. I finished the third book of the Riftwar saga, Silverthorn, by Raymond E. Feist sometime last week, and then over the weekend, I finished Digital Fortress by Dan Brown. So I finished reading two books, bringing my total to about 7 books in the last 3 months.  read more »

RIP Heath
2008-01-23 09:55:00
I was browsing around the web, looking for interesting website designs, when I came across a piece of art in tribute to Australian actor Heath Ledger. Yes, he of Brokeback Mountain, 10 Things I Hate About You, and The Patriot fame (to name but a few).  read more »

Why is it called Bluetooth??
2008-01-14 12:13:00
"The Viking king Harald Bluetooth united Norway and Denmark. He was renowned as a great communicator, skilled at bringing people together to talk to each other ? but he would never have guessed that a thousand years later a powerful technology would be named after him!" Some food for thought.
Geeks and Fitness
2008-01-11 15:05:00
Geeks and Fitness : Two terms that you wouldn't really call synonymous. The term "a fit geek" could probably be labeled as an oxymoron. I have started off the New Year with a vision of a leaner, healthier me. I used to be a bit more active when I lived in Cape Town and my general fitness levels were pretty decent. Ever since moving to Johannesburg though, a few factors have had an impact on me resulting in the gain of about 14 kilograms of weight.  read more »

Word of the Day - Binge
2008-01-10 10:48:00
Haven't had a word of the day in a while mostly cause i haven't had that much internet access as of late. came across this weird word. I might have a need of some alcoholic binging in the near future :p (there will be a designated driver for those wondering...) binge ?noun 1. a period or bout, usually brief, of excessive indulgence, as in eating, drinking alcoholic beverages, etc.; spree. ?verb (used without object) 2. to have a binge: to binge on junk food. intr.v. binged, bing·ing or binge·ing, bing·es  read more »

Holiday musings
2008-01-02 13:10:00
It's been quiet... really quiet. Except of course the transition between New Year's Eve and the New Year. That went by with quite a bang. The whole of Jo'burg was lit up like fireworks display... oh wait, that's exactly what it was! We had a particularly great view from Fisher's Hill, where you can pretty much see the whole Edenvale and Kempton Park area. We had quite a display of Fireworks. Anyway, since I (and other other people) haven't posted anything as of lately, I thought I'd just pop in and put this filler in. Just so you know I'm still alive. Happy New Year!

Duke who?
2007-12-20 08:16:00
This is something I never thought I would see. I was trawling through my RSS feeds when one caught my eye. It mentioned a game that was long considered to be vapourware. It's been almost a decade since the game was first announced and since then, 3D Realms has kept the public in the dark about the game and it's release date, always quoting that "it will be done when it's done". If you still don't know what I'm talking about, you've got a gap in your education.  read more »

2007-12-12 10:52:00
As you may have noticed by now, I'm quite the Marvel super-heroes fan. I like the way the heroes are presented and the way the movies are done. Usually, Stan Lee oversees these movies with an iron hand to make sure the director gets the image of the super hero across the way it was meant to be. So imagine my surprise when I saw this trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vhgzIM-9lf A', '240524994', '400', '300', '0', '0', 'GBK', ''); //-->Loading...

First SA Blogger fired
2007-12-03 09:38:00
That has got to be a strange feeling indeed. Fired for blogging. For voicing an opinion. Ex-sub editor at the Sowetan, Llewellyn Kriel has blogged about his experience as the first South African to get axed for blogging. Reading through his article made me think about a few things. Does a judge in today's courts even know what a blog is? Do they have enough tech-savvy to be able to handle a case like this? Food for thought.

Those Xbox blues...
2007-11-30 11:41:00
I really want an Xbox 360. I'm getting to that point where I want it real bad. I've been reading up about Xbox Live, how to bypass the system without having an American Credit Card (since Microsoft doesn't officially support the Xbox Live Service in SA yet), which games are available on Xbox Live Arcade and I've been scouting the area for shops with good prices on their games.  read more »

What a day...
2007-11-25 22:15:00
I saved a life today. At least I think I did. I can't say with absolute conviction that the kid wouldn't have been all right otherwise but at the time it looked pretty serious. Rather safe than sorry I always say. We were at my brother-in-law's daughter's 2nd birthday party. Try saying that three times fast. Anyway, the day went well and we started the day taking all the kids to a petting zoo venue, where the kids got to feed ducks, geese, swans, goats and all sorts of other animals.  read more »

Hardware Requirements

Facebook: Hot or Not?
2007-11-08 15:44:00
I have been a user of Facebook (albeit not an avid one) for a while now, and while I can't say I've used it to it's full potential, I feel I have frequented it enough to make an opinion about it. I visit the site regularly (regularly meaning 5 times a week), I check the groups every now and then and if there's an application out there that I think could be to my benefit, I'll go looking for it and I'll install it.  read more »

Console's vs Computer...
2007-10-31 07:54:00
Well... Here we are again. I have stated before that I'd never buy a console for gaming, since a pc can do that and more... Recently I had to send my pc in for repairs (random restarts...) and I borrowed Rocco's PS2. The previous week I was at Ettiene and we had a blast playing PS2 Burnout (I think) and swapping on FFX and of course, cheering on the bokke!  read more »

Islam fundamentalists don't crash into buildings...
2007-10-29 15:40:00
the US government does. At least, that's the story according to Alex Jones. Jones is the owner/author of the "controversial" website Prison Planet. Basically what he's saying is that the collapse of the Twin Towers was not and structurally could not have been the result of planes crashing into the buildings. The actual cause of the collapsing towers was the detonation of strategically placed bombs within the building. You can read more on the story here.

Can blogging be restricted?
2007-10-25 08:43:00
I direct you to this blog entry of an Italian gentleman called Beppe, who informs us about a new law that they want passed in Italy. Let me give you the short version of it: 1. They want people in Italy who want to run a blog to register on some government database. 2. People would have to pay a blogging tax. 3. You would need a registered journalist that would be your appointed "responsible director". Now I don't know about you, but this sounds like restricting freedom of speech to me.  read more »

Word of the Day - Aubade
2007-10-18 18:32:00
au·bade (Pronunciation: oh-bad, oh-bahd;) a piece sung or played outdoors at dawn, usually as a compliment to someone. [Origin: 1670?80; < F, MF, equiv. to aube (< Pr alba song about the parting of two lovers at dawn < VL, n. use of fem. of L albus white, clear) + -ade -ade1] I came across this in a sonnet. Very weird. As always reference from dictionary.com

PangYa!
2007-10-13 10:40:00
PangYa? What's that? It's a very distinctive sound made when a pro golfer hits the sweet spot on the ball. No, not Tiger Woods. I'm talking about Scout, Max and Bob. It's a game called Albatross18 and I'm addicted! It's an online golf game, with an anime look and feel, arcade-style special shots that require specific button presses and it even has RPG elements like gaining experience points and buying helpful items.
