So I missed it...
2007-09-03 23:04:00
But I'm almost done! Apart from a hectic weekend, helping family move house, etc, I had some time to do the major part in preparing the site for new bloggers. I promise that the next post will the welcoming post!
Deadline looming...
2007-08-28 15:51:00
No, I haven't forgotten my promise to open up the site to a few selected bloggers by the end of the month. The bad news is, that the site won't have a redesign ready like I planned. With database servers falling over and other such fun things happening to me, there just hasn't been time. But I will have a few edit friendly tools installed and I will TRY and finish the style guides. Hold thumbs!

Sometimes, jail is better
2007-08-27 09:45:00
I picked up on this story of a computer user who was caught uploading the latest Star Wars movie. He pleaded guilty to the charge of "conspiracy to commit copyright infringement" and was given a small amount of jail time and mostly home confinement which includes installing tracking software on his computer to track his movements.  read more »

D&D 4th Edition Announced
2007-08-22 16:05:00
Some interesting news this. Wizards of the Coast (WotC for short) has announced the latest edition of their famous Dungeons and Dragons tabletop game. They announced the 4th edition of the game at the latest GenCon earlier this month.  read more »

Star Wars fan freezes himself in carbonite
2007-08-21 08:29:00
Well, not really. It's actually a very elaborate job done with a full-size replica of the Han Solo in carbonite model used in the movie. Rob, a self-confessed nerd, has a few friends in the special effects industry (lucky guy!) that happened to have one of these replicas. One of his friends had to get rid of this replica of the prop and Rob took the opportunity with much glee.  read more »

Google could save power
2007-08-16 09:01:00
Here's an interesting article I picked up on the web today. Did you know that a monitor uses less watts to display a black page than it does displaying a white page? So consider the fact that Googl e receives about 200 million queries a day. The almost all-white page of Google gets displayed on average for 10 to 15 seconds per query. Now change the Google site to be almost all black. That's quite a bit of potential power saving going on there.  read more »

So many things...
2007-08-13 18:56:00
So many things happening at once! I had my birthday this weekend, which was celebrated exactly the way I wanted to celebrate. As little people as possible and myself painting my Warhammer miniatures all day yesterday! Also, looks like id Software, the makers of great games like Quake 4, Doom 3, etc, have announced a NEW game.  read more »

Day Of Year convert to Date
2007-08-10 16:07:00
So I've been struggling with this little gem for 3 days. I get a log of files that get downloaded from a bunch of different locations. In the filename, there's a number in a fixed position (like 218) that corresponds to the day of the year. 29 for example would be the 29th of January. I need to convert this number to an ISO date format (like 2007-09-30). I have been racking my brains, scouring the internet, trying all sorts of different Perl modules with no luck. Then it suddenly hit me, right between the eyes.  read more »

IPv6 by 2011?
2007-08-03 08:13:00
Some of you may have heard of IPv6. Some may not. Let me give you a quick breakdown. The current IP addressing system we are using is version 4. A version 4 IP would look something like this: 196.168.0.99 Okay, I've listed a private IP and not a public IP, but let's not get too technical here. The problem is, the world is running out of public IPs. There's only so many IP addresses to go around. So they designed IPv6. An IPv6 address looks like this: 2001:0db8:0000:0000:0000:0000:1428:57ab  read more »

Help with Geekworld
2007-08-01 07:55:00
I've received two offers to help with Geekworld. These are people that I know and at least one of them can speak English. I hope the other one will use a spell checker! I've taken a look at the security and since I've tightened that, I haven't had any more "incidents" with people advertising V!@gra or C1Ali5 or other appendage enlargement medicine. I've set a deadline for myself. I will try and open the site up to selected bloggers by the end of August. Wish me luck!
Telkom has better service... believe it or not!
2007-07-30 16:07:00
ECN Telecoms is a company that promises ADSL lines and Internet and Voice connectivity over aforementioned lines. I got so excited with the prospect that I would be able to get an actual line, a land line, with voice AND internet, and it would cost me less than what Telkom would ask me. Above all that, the actual ADSL line would not be one from Telkom  read more »

iPhone Thoughts
2007-07-27 13:03:00
So the iPhone has been out for almost a month now and so far it's received mixed reviews. I've been reading a really good (and comprehensive) review over at Gizmodo regarding the iPhone. They call it the "No BS review" of the iPhone. The reviewer looks at the phone very objectively, with no "Apple Fanboy" commentary and also no "Apple Hater" commentary. read more

Quiet Times
2007-07-26 12:19:00
Just a quick update... I am very busy with things at the moment at the office and at home. My wife is also quite busy and I'm trying to help her out where I can. This would explain why I do not have too much sleep in my system at the moment. Seems to be a recurring theme for me nowadays. In other news, I've almost finished assembling my Goblin Warhammer army. I will post pictures! read more

1000 Comics
2007-07-20 12:03:00
That is certainly an impressive number. Ctrl-Alt-Del author and artist Tim Absath posted his 1000th comic today. He states on his blog that the comic has been his job and life for the past 5 years and that he enjoys waking up in the mornings and doing something that he wants to do. That has got to be one of the best feelings in the world.  read more »

Need... sleeeeeep
2007-07-20 08:11:00
I did not get a lot of sleep last night. I was up until 5 this morning working on the client's website, which is coming along nicely I might add. I'm up again at just after 6 and at work just after 7. Fun. Anyway, I've got a few reports to do before 10AM and afterwards I'll see if I find something interesting to report on. I couldn't sleep anyway.

A few projects in the pipe-line
2007-07-18 08:21:00
So I've been back for a while and the projects are starting to pile up. I received some feedback from our client at Site-Me about changes that he wants made and I started working on the list last night. Things are looking good on that side. At the office, I've got to design a web-based leave application... application. As in "apply for leave" via the "application". Whatever. Also, I've FINALLY bought my paints for my Warhammer models!  read more »

Back!
2007-07-15 15:02:00
I'm back! Back from the wedding, back from honeymoon and back to reality. I am coming back a revitalised person, with new energy and enthusiasm for all my previous projects and endeavours as well as having more energy for new challenges that I know await me! Okay, enough rhetoric for now. I am feeling better and had a wonderful time at the honeymoon. The thing that still strikes me the most about the honeymoon is how quiet it was. No cars, no people... only the sounds of birds and the dam could be heard. And even then only occasionally.  read more »

Geek Stuff
2007-07-04 12:01:00
I know and understand that this site is called "Geek world" but it's not like I have posted a lot of geek related stuff. I seriously don't have the time at the moment. When I started out with this blog, I wanted to show the world my code snippets and 3D models or tell them of my latest game I'm playing or even games that I finished etc. Scotty would have said, "I can't do it captain, she ain't got the power!" in his cute Scottish accent.  read more »

*sigh*
2007-07-03 12:22:00
So much to do, so little time! I have so many people to phone, so many things to buy, so many little projects that need finishing up and all these things need to be done by Thursday. Are all weddings this hectic to manage? Or am I just managing it badly? Anyway, this was just a quick update, don't have time to post more as the list above waits for no man. Especially not a financially-challenged man.

Not too shabby, hey?
2007-06-30 20:29:00
Well it was with a reluctant sigh that I told the hairdresser, "Do what you think will look good." I almost cringed when the hairdresser said she thinks highlights will look good (my fiancée was happy!) but I resigned myself to accepting whatever fate she would dish out. An hour and a bit later, as well as my first time under a dryer, I think the result is quite favourable! I like it a lot and I think it came out very well! A very expensive haircut that cost about four times my normal shave but I believe it was worth it.

Tomorrow
2007-06-29 12:54:00
It's with some trepidation that I am posting this. Tomo rrow , I'm going to do something I've never done before. I'm getting a haircut. Yes I've had haircuts before but not like this one! This will be the first time ever that I sit in that chair, look at the person in the mirror and tell them, "Do what YOU think will look good on me". Scary thought actually! Normally, I get them to shave my head with a number four blade so that I have a bit of hair left and it takes three months before I need another haircut.  read more »

Snow in JHB!
2007-06-27 10:33:00
It's snowing in Johannesburg and I've got the pictures to prove it! Personally I've never seen snow in my life so I'm pretty excited to see all the fluffy (cold!) white stuff floating around. We were at the office last night when it started snowing at around 11. It was pretty cold last night and we had the heaters on just a bit hotter than usual! This morning everything looks so pretty covered in snow! It's almost sad that it snows a lot closer to Cape Town and I could go see snow at any time, but I finally see it after moving to JHB of all places.  read more »

It's snowing!
2007-06-27 00:39:00
It's snowing in Johannesburg! Truly a beautiful sight to behold! My fiancée took a few photos including one of a snowball I made. I'll upload the photos tomorrow morning as I'm posting this from my cellphone and I'm nowhere near a PC. There's also thunder and lightning which is turning this night into a spectacular one indeed! Photos tomorrow!

Wedding Preparations
2007-06-26 22:24:00
At least my fiancée has had a productive day. I'm not saying I didn't have one, I mean I had lots of work at the office and I will have more work to come but with regards to wedding preparations, she's way ahead of me. She has been able to track down the flowers that she wanted for the bouquets and floral arrangements and she managed to procure the ties for the best men as well.  read more »

Much needed weekend come and gone...
2007-06-24 16:26:00
It's been a pretty busy weekend but at least compared to the week I had, it was comparably more quiet. We went for our first pre-marital counselling session and I thoroughly enjoyed it. There were moments for us both where we couldn't believe how wrong we sometimes are or how we make assumptions about the smallest things. Quite an eye-opener really. We're going for a follow up session this evening after church so let the journey of discovery continue!  read more »

Ready for the weekend
2007-06-20 13:47:00
Yeah, I know it's only Wednesday (I think, I seem to be losing time lately) but I am so ready for the weekend. I'm working quite hard at the office, my fiancée is moving her stuff into my flat and the place looks like a tornado hit it and I've got the job for Site-Me that needs to be completed, once domain registration gets done.  read more »

Perl + Linux = Good Stuff
2007-06-19 13:28:00
So I've had this project for the last week and a bit doing all kinds of crazy stuff with Perl when I ran into a bit of a hassle. I have a filename (which can be determined) with a possible list of three extensions. It will never use all three extensions, only one of the three. I started out with complex if... elsif... else statements and struggled for a while... until I figured that it's easy enough to run Linux system commands directly from Perl.  read more »

Too little time, need teleporter
2007-06-18 07:32:00
Thankfully, I was able to finish MOST of my project over the weekend, thanks to the magic of VPN's allowing me to work from home. There was still a SQL query on my work PC that I needed, but I came in a bit earlier this morning so I should be able to finish things off. In other news, it seems like Site-Me (the sideline web desvelopment thing I've got going) might have received it's first client.  read more »
