My brain hurts...

I've been busy with a project at the office, taking text-based databases (flat files), extracting data and inserting them into a MySQL database, running a query to let the data make more sense and finally, using that query and generating an Excel spreadsheet. I'm doing all this using Perl . I've never used Perl before this week and I thought I'd give it a go. I was a bit reluctant at first but now I'm quite impressed.  read more »

It's a horrible scene to walk upon, but you can see the carnage that occurred not a few minutes ago. Glass lying everywhere, police officers with semi-automatic rifles walking around, sirens blaring, paramedics on the scene. Even now you can hear the helicopters circling the area in search of the thieves.  read more »

Too much input

Things are getting to be a bit much at this moment. I've got a big project to complete at work, I need to finish all my documentation before I go on honeymoon (so that other people can do my job while I'm gone), I have things to sort out regarding the wedding. It's all a bit draining on me. I'm having trouble sleeping and having funny dreams. Yes, having meetings with Robert Mugabe constitutes as a funny dream. Thoughts on Ubuntu

So Ubuntu 7.0.4 (Feisty Fawn) has been out for a while now and I've been helping my fiancé's brother with a project he's undertaking. His wife (a doctor) has her own private practice. Most of it though is running on old hardware, software etc. When I say old, I mean Windows 98 old. So he decides he wants to go one step further and make the entire office go open source. Geek getting married, please donate gadgets

So I'm getting married in less than a month and while it hasn't really sunk in, it's interesting to see reactions from people around me. I've seen everything from denial to ridicule to genuine pleasure when I tell people I'm getting married. It will probably only hit me like two days before (or maybe two days after) the wedding, the reality of the situation. I'm going to be saying "I do" and with those two words I will be pledging that I will look after my wife, take care of her and any children we might have, for better or for worse.  read more »

Open Source not always what it's cracked up to be...

I've been looking around the net for a piece of open-source software that can handle small tasks like customer invoicing, different payment schedules (monthly, quarterly and annually)... basic stuff. Any sort of CRM or ERP software that's open-source or freeware. No such luck.  read more »

Being a geek, especially at school level, I never seemed to fit into the whole social scene. 'Sokkies' on Friday nights at the school when you're in grade 7, matric dance... He's been making waves in South Africa, the so called sa male prostitute (lower case letters seem intentional by the blogger) by revealing former male clients of his and detailing their exploits. With detailed descriptions of client particulars, sometimes going as deep as address details and fetishes, it was difficult to ignore the stuff he's written. Some high profile names were mentioned as well... Simon Grindrod, James Small, Barry Ronge... who by the way, if it's true, has a pretty sick fetish. Hectic Weekend

This was a nice weekend... hectic but nice. I got some more DDR playtime in over the weekend... starting to regain my skillz. Also watched quite a bit of Heroes this weekend as well as a bit of the second season of Prison Break, which I've finished about halfway now. I must say though, now that I've also got my fiancé hooked on Heroes, we'll probably be watching a bit more of that.  read more »

Being sick is not fun... it's even worse when you can't sleep at night. This makes me sick AND tired... not a fun combination. British Judge doesn't know what a web site is

While many of us think it's quite self-explanatory, there are apparantly people who have no clue what a web site is. In this case, a British Judge is trying three men charged under Britain's new anti-terrorist laws. The men have been operating a web site that showcases violent Islamic material, including beheadings of Western hostages. The case sounds open and shut to most people... but not to the judge.  read more »

I'm sure you've heard the standard excuses before. "My computer somehow lost the file" or things like "I did set the backups for 12AM!". Fine, there ARE reasons where technology works against us. But blaming your GPS system for the fact that you parked your car in front of a moving train? That's human stupidity hard at work there! You gotta read it to believe it... So I've had my first bit of comment spam. Imagine my surprise when I look at the recently posted comments only to find a whole list of links, pointing to "anal" this and "teenie" that. I sometimes wonder why people bother? Do they make lots money in some unknown manner that I am not aware of? I mean, there was some loser prepared to visit the website and have an entire list of about 30 links ready, to paste it in a comment for unsuspecting users.  read more »

Crisis at work...

So there I was, happily surfing the Internets when suddenly the connection dies. Do the normal, ping the upstream proxy, no reply. Probably just the upstream provider. Two minutes later though, the calls come in. People can't connect to other PC's on the intranet or they can't access the Warehouse application to handle orders, etc, etc. First thing on my mind: broken switch.  read more »

How's this for stupid? A video camera in a technology store in Australia caught a man trying... no wait, succeeding to steal a LCD Projector ... by stuffing it down his pants! At first you think it's impossible, especially as the young man looks like he's trying to steal the biggest projector in the store. Lazy Saturday

If there's ever been a lazy Saturday , it's been this one. I've been on the couch all day catching up with a few TV Shows. I've finished the first season of Supernatural and... I know this is VERY LATE, but I've finally started watching Prison Break. Yeah, I know it's very late and they recently finished the second season. I watched the first 4 episodes of Season 1 today and now I finally know what the hype is about. It's a pretty good show!  read more »
