A few projects in the pipe-line
2007-07-18 08:21:00 So I've been back for a while and the projects are starting to pile up. I received some feedback from our client at Site-Me about changes that he wants made and I started working on the list last night. Things are looking good on that side. At the office, I've got to design a web-based leave application... application. As in "apply for leave" via the "application". Whatever. Also, I've FINALLY bought my paints for my Warhammer models! read more » More About: Projects , Line , Pipe
Back!
2007-07-15 15:02:00 I'm back! Back from the wedding, back from honeymoon and back to reality. I am coming back a revitalised person, with new energy and enthusiasm for all my previous projects and endeavours as well as having more energy for new challenges that I know await me! Okay, enough rhetoric for now. I am feeling better and had a wonderful time at the honeymoon. The thing that still strikes me the most about the honeymoon is how quiet it was. No cars, no people... only the sounds of birds and the dam could be heard. And even then only occasionally. read more » More About: Life
Geek Stuff
2007-07-04 12:01:00 I know and understand that this site is called "Geek world" but it's not like I have posted a lot of geek related stuff. I seriously don't have the time at the moment. When I started out with this blog, I wanted to show the world my code snippets and 3D models or tell them of my latest game I'm playing or even games that I finished etc. Scotty would have said, "I can't do it captain, she ain't got the power!" in his cute Scottish accent. read more » More About: Life , Stuff
*sigh*
2007-07-03 12:22:00 So much to do, so little time! I have so many people to phone, so many things to buy, so many little projects that need finishing up and all these things need to be done by Thursday. Are all weddings this hectic to manage? Or am I just managing it badly? Anyway, this was just a quick update, don't have time to post more as the list above waits for no man. Especially not a financially-challenged man. Not too shabby, hey?
2007-06-30 20:29:00 Well it was with a reluctant sigh that I told the hairdresser, "Do what you think will look good." I almost cringed when the hairdresser said she thinks highlights will look good (my fiancée was happy!) but I resigned myself to accepting whatever fate she would dish out. An hour and a bit later, as well as my first time under a dryer, I think the result is quite favourable! I like it a lot and I think it came out very well! A very expensive haircut that cost about four times my normal shave but I believe it was worth it. More About: Life , Abby
Tomorrow
2007-06-29 12:54:00 It's with some trepidation that I am posting this. Tomo rrow , I'm going to do something I've never done before. I'm getting a haircut. Yes I've had haircuts before but not like this one! This will be the first time ever that I sit in that chair, look at the person in the mirror and tell them, "Do what YOU think will look good on me". Scary thought actually! Normally, I get them to shave my head with a number four blade so that I have a bit of hair left and it takes three months before I need another haircut. read more » More About: Life , Morrow
Snow in JHB!
2007-06-27 10:33:00 It's snowing in Johannesburg and I've got the pictures to prove it! Personally I've never seen snow in my life so I'm pretty excited to see all the fluffy (cold!) white stuff floating around. We were at the office last night when it started snowing at around 11. It was pretty cold last night and we had the heaters on just a bit hotter than usual! This morning everything looks so pretty covered in snow! It's almost sad that it snows a lot closer to Cape Town and I could go see snow at any time, but I finally see it after moving to JHB of all places. read more » More About: Misc , Snow
It's snowing!
2007-06-27 00:39:00 It's snowing in Johannesburg! Truly a beautiful sight to behold! My fiancée took a few photos including one of a snowball I made. I'll upload the photos tomorrow morning as I'm posting this from my cellphone and I'm nowhere near a PC. There's also thunder and lightning which is turning this night into a spectacular one indeed! Photos tomorrow! More About: Life
Wedding Preparations
2007-06-26 22:24:00 At least my fiancée has had a productive day. I'm not saying I didn't have one, I mean I had lots of work at the office and I will have more work to come but with regards to wedding preparations, she's way ahead of me. She has been able to track down the flowers that she wanted for the bouquets and floral arrangements and she managed to procure the ties for the best men as well. read more » More About: Life , Wedding , Preparation , Prep

Much needed weekend come and gone...
2007-06-24 16:26:00 It's been a pretty busy weekend but at least compared to the week I had, it was comparably more quiet. We went for our first pre-marital counselling session and I thoroughly enjoyed it. There were moments for us both where we couldn't believe how wrong we sometimes are or how we make assumptions about the smallest things. Quite an eye-opener really. We're going for a follow up session this evening after church so let the journey of discovery continue! read more » More About: Movies , Life , Weekend
Ready for the weekend
2007-06-20 13:47:00 Yeah, I know it's only Wednesday (I think, I seem to be losing time lately) but I am so ready for the weekend. I'm working quite hard at the office, my fiancée is moving her stuff into my flat and the place looks like a tornado hit it and I've got the job for Site-Me that needs to be completed, once domain registration gets done. read more » More About: Movies , Life , Weekend , Ready
Perl + Linux = Good Stuff
2007-06-19 13:28:00 So I've had this project for the last week and a bit doing all kinds of crazy stuff with Perl when I ran into a bit of a hassle. I have a filename (which can be determined) with a possible list of three extensions. It will never use all three extensions, only one of the three. I started out with complex if... elsif... else statements and struggled for a while... until I figured that it's easy enough to run Linux system commands directly from Perl. read more » More About: Stuff , Coding , Good
Too little time, need teleporter
2007-06-18 07:32:00 Thankfully, I was able to finish MOST of my project over the weekend, thanks to the magic of VPN's allowing me to work from home. There was still a SQL query on my work PC that I needed, but I came in a bit earlier this morning so I should be able to finish things off. In other news, it seems like Site-Me (the sideline web desvelopment thing I've got going) might have received it's first client. read more » More About: Time , Perl , Coding , Porter , Litt
My brain hurts...
2007-06-15 20:47:00 I've been busy with a project at the office, taking text-based databases (flat files), extracting data and inserting them into a MySQL database, running a query to let the data make more sense and finally, using that query and generating an Excel spreadsheet. I'm doing all this using Perl . I've never used Perl before this week and I thought I'd give it a go. I was a bit reluctant at first but now I'm quite impressed. read more » More About: Coding , Brain
Cash-in-Transit heist outside my office
2007-06-13 15:14:00 It's a horrible scene to walk upon, but you can see the carnage that occurred not a few minutes ago. Glass lying everywhere, police officers with semi-automatic rifles walking around, sirens blaring, paramedics on the scene. Even now you can hear the helicopters circling the area in search of the thieves. read more » More About: Office , Misc , Cash , Tran , Transit
No Soccer Quota System?
2007-06-13 10:09:00 It's not really my line of expertise, but it's starting to irritate me just a little and I'm sure it's also irritating other South Africans. Apartheid has been over for quite some time now, but some people still feel threatened by the white community in our country. read more » More About: System , Sport , Soccer , Stem
Too much input
2007-06-12 09:06:00 Things are getting to be a bit much at this moment. I've got a big project to complete at work, I need to finish all my documentation before I go on honeymoon (so that other people can do my job while I'm gone), I have things to sort out regarding the wedding. It's all a bit draining on me. I'm having trouble sleeping and having funny dreams. Yes, having meetings with Robert Mugabe constitutes as a funny dream. Like I really have "a plan for his country"... read more » More About: Life , Input
Thoughts on Ubuntu
2007-06-09 00:36:00 So Ubuntu 7.0.4 (Feisty Fawn) has been out for a while now and I've been helping my fiancé's brother with a project he's undertaking. His wife (a doctor) has her own private practice. Most of it though is running on old hardware, software etc. When I say old, I mean Windows 98 old. So he decides he wants to go one step further and make the entire office go open source. Sounds easy enough doesn't it? Well, it's not. read more » More About: Thoughts
Geek getting married, please donate gadgets
2007-06-08 14:57:00 So I'm getting married in less than a month and while it hasn't really sunk in, it's interesting to see reactions from people around me. I've seen everything from denial to ridicule to genuine pleasure when I tell people I'm getting married. It will probably only hit me like two days before (or maybe two days after) the wedding, the reality of the situation. I'm going to be saying "I do" and with those two words I will be pledging that I will look after my wife, take care of her and any children we might have, for better or for worse. read more » More About: Life , Gadgets , Donate , Geek , Arri
Open Source not always what it's cracked up to be...
2007-06-06 16:42:00 I've been looking around the net for a piece of open-source software that can handle small tasks like customer invoicing, different payment schedules (monthly, quarterly and annually)... basic stuff. Any sort of CRM or ERP software that's open-source or freeware. No such luck. read more » More About: Open Source , Open , Source , Open-Source , Always

I can't dance!
2007-06-03 17:44:00 "Cos, I can't dance, I can't talk. The only thing about me is the way I walk." That's part of the chorus from a Genesis song that most of you should know. Being a geek, especially at school level, I never seemed to fit into the whole social scene. 'Sokkies' on Friday nights at the school when you're in grade 7, matric dance... I never really thought it would make a difference to my life one day and I never saw the use for it anyway. Well, now it's coming back to bite me in the butt. read more » More About: Life , Dance
Top 10 Fictional Geeks
2007-06-02 00:42:00 Ending off Top 10 Week with a bang I thought I should compile a different kind of Top 10 list. At the suggestion of a friend, I went with the above topic. This might tie in a bit with my previous post with the biggest difference being... these geeks don't exist! So after scouring the 'nets a bit, I came up with this list of Top 10 Fictional Geeks ! read more »
Top 10 Geek T-Shirts
2007-05-31 23:05:00 I love geek T-shirts... especially since almost no-one except geeks get them. I've had looks in a shopping mall where you can see people think you are retarded because you're t-shirt makes no sense! I also love the geek shop, ThinkGeek , where you can get all sorts of geek toys. (If anyone wants to buy me the levitating globe, you're more than welcome! Anyway, they also stock T-shirts! That's kinda what this post is about anyway... So here are my Top 10 Geek T-Shirts : read more » More About: T-Shirts , T-Shirt
sa male prostitute stops revealing his clients
2007-05-31 09:21:00 He's been making waves in South Africa, the so called sa male prostitute (lower case letters seem intentional by the blogger) by revealing former male clients of his and detailing their exploits. With detailed descriptions of client particulars, sometimes going as deep as address details and fetishes, it was difficult to ignore the stuff he's written. Some high profile names were mentioned as well... Simon Grindrod, James Small, Barry Ronge... who by the way, if it's true, has a pretty sick fetish. But was it all fact or someone with an overactive imagination? read more » More About: Clients , Stops , Male , Ealing , Prostitute
Top 10 Games I've actually finished
2007-05-30 12:14:00 Let us continue Top 10 Week without any further ado. I play games... I play LOTS of games. Finish ing games though, is an entirely different story. I never seem to have the time to sit down and finish a game. So I've decided to compile a list of games that I've finished, as in, seen the credits screen and received that warm fuzzy feeling inside to know that you've accomplished something. read more » More About: Games , Ames , Ally
More comment spam *sigh*
2007-05-30 00:15:00 So that is it. More comment spam... I'm sorry, but for now, all comments posted by anonymous users will get sent to an approval queue first, where I will review them. Hopefully I can continue with Top 10 week without any more sillyness like that. Once again, I'm sorry for any inconvenience. More About: Spam , Comment , Comm , Sigh
(My) Top 10 Famous Geeks
2007-05-29 14:15:00 There's one problem with this type of list... no one will agree with me, or they will have their own ideas for their Top 10 list. I've found at least three different sites with their own list, and I almost never agreed with them. So there's only one thing left to do... I'll have to make my own list! So here is, in no numerical order whatsoever, my Top 10 list of famous geeks: read more » More About: Geeks , Famous
