Supplements - IAAF Nutrition for Athletics
2008-01-21 10:00:00
This summary is from the IAAF 2nd International Consensus Conference on “Nutrition for Athletic s “ held in Monaco from April 18-20, 2007. Copies of the CD and booklet are available from the IAAF website www.iaaf.org. Supplements Presenter: Ron Maughan (GBR) The knowledge level of athletes concerning sports nutrition is not good and very much influenced by the supplement industry. Advertorials are often seen as a good source of information. In general, the supplement industry is better in communicating their message than are scientists. It is recognised that because of limitations in research design it is very hard to prove if a strategy or supplement works. “No proven effect” is not the same as “proven no effect’: There might be an effect that cannot be detected by present research methodology. Athletes should be warned against indiscriminate use of supplements. The risk of contamination of supplements with substances that are on the WADA list i...

Sport Psychology - Books and Resources
2008-01-19 15:00:00
In my previous article on Sport Psychology, I promised to mention one of my favorite resources on this highly specialized topic. New Indoor 400m Track on the West Coast
2008-01-16 19:02:00
Unfortunately, it’s in Anchorage, Alaska. The article claims to be the continent’s only indoor full-size, 400-meter track training facility that is actually intended for track and field. Imagine that, building a track for other sports (or final exams before Christmas break!) In Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, there is the Louis Riel Dome Indoor Track which is a ...

The Old Blog is Back - Well, Sort of
2008-01-16 00:45:00
There was a lot of demand for the old blog format, that is, having the most recent posts in chronological format. Usually, I kept the last 3 posts on the front page, and if you wanted to read the older content, you would go to the ARCHIVES section. So for those readers, choose the BLOG button on top of the page, or bookmark this page: http://speedendurance.com/blog/ Enjoy! Copyright 2008 by Speedendurance.com. All Rights Reserved.

Saving Money on Overseas International Calls - Part 2
2008-01-15 19:00:00
The world of technology changes rapidly in 6 months! My last review of Saving Money on Overseas International Calls was in July 2007 so it’s time for an update on the latest in cost savings. Everyone knows how expensive it is to use your cell phone while overseas. I returned from my month long trip at the WMA in Riccione, Italy, and believe me, you do NOT want to see my cell phone bill. (I have a GSM phone). I’ll be 100% honest here… my cell phone bill was more than my rent! It’s no secret that I’m a big advocator for VoIP. I’ve had it for 3 years now, and I had only one outage, and that was due to my Internet connection going down for less than an hour. With the upcoming February meets in Australia, the summer Golden League meets in Europe, and of course the Olympics Games in Beijing China, you’ll need a service to call your athletes, or they will need to call you from overseas. Now, if I told you and your athletes can use your cell ph...

Fluid Needs for Training and Competition in Athletics - IAAF Nutrition for
2008-01-15 15:00:00
This summary is from the IAAF 2nd International Consensus Conference on “Nutrition for Athletics “ held in Monaco from April 18-20, 2007. Copies of the CD and booklet are available from the IAAF website www.iaaf.org. Fluid Needs for Training and Competition in Athletics Presenter: Susan Sherriffs (GBR) Hydration status affects performance. Different events have different fluid needs. General guidelines for all events are to ensure euhydration by consuming about 500ml of fluid with sodium or sodium containing foods 2 hours before exercise. In the hours after exercise, 150% of the water lost should be provided to adequately re-hydrate. A scale can be used to estimate sweat losses. Competition hydration plans should be practiced during training. The main concern in the sprint events is that warm-up and pre-race activities might result in a sub-optimal hydration status. Also, training in a warm environment or wearing heavy clothing can result in dehydration. There might be...

2008-01-12 09:10:00
Yesterday, I wrote about Why Vitamin B12 is the scapegoat. People are often asking what is all the hype about Vitamin B12 and why are athletes concerned about causing a deficiency? Why is Vitamin B12 the Scapegoat?
2008-01-11 15:13:00
Vitamin B12 has been the subject of controversy lately. More of a scapegoat, to be exact. From the article Injecting B-12 into athletic controversies, they quote: “Sprinter thought injection was B-12.” That sprinter is Justin Gatlin, whose assistant coach gave the world record-sharing athlete a shot two weeks before he tested positive for steroids. Gatlin explained recently, ...
