Draftguys TV: The Secrets of the 40-Yard Dash
2008-04-23 09:22:00 The 2008 NFL Draft will be held April 26-27. Millions of fans tune in to the NFL Draft, but many of us have never had a chance to see more than a handful of the players selected each year… until now! Draftguys TV gives football fans over 40 in-depth player profiles breaking down practice footage, training film, exclusive interviews, expert opinions, and more. Hosted by Cecil Lammey and Sigmund Bloom, football fanatics will see the game as the NFL scouts see it - up close and personal. In this special episode, Strength and Conditioning Coach Travelle Gaines explains the unique ways he trains pro clients for the biggest - and potentially most lucrative run and test of their life: the 40-yard dash. After watching this video, I am not sure if I subscribe to some of the techniques used to improve on the 40 yard dash. For example, pulling a sled with your hands tied behind your back? I would think your arms and hands have a significant role in acceleration. But if they run a... More About: Secrets , Yard , Dash
Who Needs Rabbits? Video of Filbert Bayi 1500m WR
2008-04-22 15:27:00 My all time favorite race without rabbits is the 1974 Commonwealth Games 1500 meters in Christchurch, New Zealand. Filbert Bayi’s set a world record of 3.32.2 beating New Zealand’s John Walker in the process. Bayi opened up a first lap 54.9 and ran from start to finish in first place, with Walker closing in the final lap. The video shows the 800m race first, followed by the 1500m about 800m into the race, with 700m to go. What you miss is Bayi leading from the gun on a suicide pace. He splits 800 meters at 1:52.1! Here is the video from YouTube: You see, there is no need for wascal wabbits! And you have John Walker and Rod Dixon stalking like hunting prey. Fast Forward to the 1975 Dream Mile with Marty Liquori… another World Record of 3:51.0. This time, Bayi opened up with reasonable 57.1 and 1:57 440 yard splits. Here is the video from YouTube. Unfortunately, the African Boycott of 1976 Montreal Olympics denied the John Walker-Filbert Bayi showdown... More About: Video , Rabbits
Post-Workout Recovery Drinks and Fat Loss
2008-04-21 10:53:00 I am very big on post-workout recovery drinks. Why? Because my commute back home from the track is 20-30 minutes. And by the time dinner is ready, we are looking at up to 2 hours from the end of the workout to sitting down at the dinner table. Certainly not good for the Glycogen synthase window of 30 minutes. I wrote a post-workout recovery drink article on Geezerjock magazine, and also mentioned it on my Top 5 Supplements article. For a different perspective, here’s a Q&A with bodybuilder Tom Venuto from Burn the Fat. QUESTION: Dear Tom: I came across a piece of muscle-building advice written on a white board at a Bally’s fitness club, posted outside the “advanced” personal training station. It said to ingest whey protein and 60-70 grams of *simple sugars* 30-45 minutes after your workout. Is there any truth at all to this advice? I take particular exception to point #1… I can’t believe eating 60-70 grams of simple sugar at any time can... More About: Recovery , Workout , Drinks , Post , Loss
