Welcome back, Tom Glavine. As a lifelong Atlanta Braves fan, I've always trusted the organization to know when a player should leave the fold and seek the employ of the 31 other organizations. But when Glavine left a few years ago, it just seemed a little surreal.I mean, c'mon, he left to play for the inept New York Metropolitians. And it was not as if he left to play for a better team.Sure, when Glavine left Atlanta, the Braves were nearing the end of their historic run of division titles. But the Mets, even with their spending, were not going to be better than Atlanta.Their fans claim that they came within one strike of making the World Series in 2005, but Carlos Beltran stood there frozen with his bat on his shoulders thereby ruining a classic catch by Endy Chavez and preventing the Mets a chance to pursue that elusive title. Yet, the Mets, clearly better than the St. Louis Cardinals proved that they were more hype than heart. The 2007 collapse was placed upon the shoulders of Gl...

Culture Club: A "Time"-less Classic
2007-11-12 22:43:00
Two weeks ago, I had an incident in my English Composition II class where a handful of students started complaining about not having enough time to finish an essay exam.Without going into the full details, it was a mini-revolt which make the ongoing situation in Pakistan pale in comparison. Okay, it wasn't that bad, but in my years of being an college adjunct, I've never had so many people complain at one time.As a means, of trying to place an end to the subject, I told them that their complaints are are similar to that between two lovers. And then lead into the chours of Culture Club 's "Time (Clock of the Heart)": Time won't give me time,'Cos time makes the lovers feel,Like they've got something real. And you and me, we know we got nothing but time,But time won't give me time.Due to the age gap, I realized that only a few may have any idea about the group or the song, but after class, I realized that the 1983 classic has to be one of my favorite songs (and most underrated son...

The Insufferable Michael Kay
2007-11-08 22:15:00
At least twice a week, one of my best friends asks me, "Why do you listen to sports talk radio when you know that the host is going to say something that will annoy you?"Often, I justify it as a means of keeping update on the hot topics in sports. But, he's right. If there is anything that annoys me, it is the lack of critical thinking. (Just ask my students for the English Composition course that I teach. Every class period, they hear me bemoan the fact that critical thinking separates those who can move forward in life and those who will be left behind. If they were wise, they'd ask me how our president go to that position, and then I'd be stumped. But I digress....) For the past few months, I have weaned myself off of the sports talk genre. It all started with the end of the Dan Patrick show. And then, once I moved to New Jersey, I really had no reason to listen to the great Brandon Tierney program on 1050 ESPN Radio (New York) because I no longer had a ninety minute commute fr...

Obama Needs To Be Better Than This!
2007-10-31 21:07:00
There is nothing like politics to bring the mother and son closer. It is not as if I have a bad relationship with my mom, in fact, we're as close as we've always been despite living just under a thousand miles away. But the fact that she lives and Iowa, and is politically aware, make our relationship even all the more special this election season. She has the benefit of being inundated with phone calls, campaign stops, commercials, and mass mailings lauding various Democratic candidates. (Say what you will about my parents, but at least they raised me to be a Democrat!)Nevertheless, our conversation took an interesting turn last night when I had to explain to her the failings of Barack Obama not denouncing gospel superstar Donnie McClurkin - a man who feels that homosexuality is a curse. Despite her feelings that Obama does not need to speak out on every issue. To me, Obama will always walk a tightrope. He is not a Black candidate but a candidate that happens to be Black. This pres...

In Appreciation of Robert Palmer
2007-10-29 02:12:00
One of soul music's most underrated voices has to be that of Robe rt Palmer . This came to mind last night as Ms 876 and I were listening to The System's digital funk classic "You Are In My System". As we were both singing the song, it struck me that while I love The System's song, I was more in tune with Palmer's vocalization. And the more the song continued, despite being familiar with the original, I still found myself singing Palmer's version. Even with ad libs. And that is a testament to Palmer, even if his version is more widely known.Whereas Elvis and Pat Boone were beguiled for taking songs which were popularized by Black singers and singing it in their own bland way, Palmer never caught the same wrath from critics or Black audiences. "I Didn't Mean to Turn You On" (Cherelle), "Early In The Morning" (Gap Band), and "(Too Good Too Be True) Tell Me I'm Not Dreaming" (Michael Jackson and Jermaine Jackson) were well received. It was as if he received license because of the h...

In Sports, As In Love, Loyalty Is Treasured
2007-10-24 23:22:00
For more than one reason, the front page of today's New York Post ("the worst paper on the East Coast" as proclaimed by Chuck D. on "A Letter To the New York Post"), brought a smile on my face. It seems to me that when it comes to the allegiances of our sports teams, you are either a true fan or you are not.And apparently, when it comes to politics, well, Rudy Guilliani continues to be nothing more than a hypocrite. But, taking shots at the former mayor (who radically changed New York based upon an improving economy and ideas already set in motion by David Dinkins) is far too easy for this blog. So let's go to sports allegiances first. It seems that over the past several months, sports fans have become aghast at various public figures outwardly showing support for a "rival". Over the summer, ESPN's Mike Greenberg was bothered that New England Patriot's quarterback Tom Brady would have the nerve to wear a New York Yankees hat. And just a few weeks ago, this same "commentator" was ...

No Crossover
2007-10-24 20:33:00
This afternoon, I listen to Juanes on WNYC's "Sound Check" program. It was a very interesting interview which covered a variety of areas including his duet with Tony Bennett. But I was most interested in how this did not want to crossover into the English market. He stated that it was important to stay true to his Colombian roots and using the power of Spanish to get his points across. Primarily as the translation would not have a much of an impact in English. This is despite the fact that Juanes has a spectacular voice. And a sound that is just as moving. (For those who are unfamiliar, he is a singer-songwriter that is one of Latin America's biggest sensations. I've had the opportunity to see him perform on Latin American award show. And even though it was only television, you the impression that the man would be a phenomenal live performer.)To hear Juanes stay true to his convictions is nothing new but may come as a shock to listeners of commercial American radio. Each morning,...

How Sex Ruined Janet Jackson
2007-10-15 23:37:00
Sex is probably the worst thing ever to happen to Janet Jackson .I had the misfortune to hear her latest release. Not only was the song a chore to listen to, but her vocals are barely audible (which may not necessarily be a bad thing.)But I digress from my original premise. So let me get back on tract.Pop music is nothing more than an example of Darwin's Theory of Evolution. Those with talent, or at the very least some type entertainment value, must either adapt to remain relevant or die. That may sound harsh, but taken what I wrote at face value, it's true. Think of any of your favorite acts. There is a reason that acts such as The Police, The Rolling Stones, and Prince continue to be able to go on tour and create publicity. You can quibble over whether these acts are still relevant, but they seem to recognize that their audience matured, so they produce music which reflects their maturation process and the growth of their audience.Clearly, Janet did not get that memo as she is sti...
The Lost Art of the Mixtape: Part II
2007-10-08 19:27:00
While reading "The Namesake" for my English Composition II class, there is a place where Gogol records a collection of songs for a woman while she is studying abroad. In fact, Jhumpa Lahiri aptly writes about the forgotten mixtape. A staple of the 1980s and 1990s.To the reader who came of age during the late 1990s, they have no idea about the aural letter that two generations before them came to know as a means of expression when words were not enough. The mixtape was a means of expression which would be unique for my time period. My parents weren't blessed with cassette deck which allowed them to record their albums and listen to them in their automobiles or Walkmans. And those who grew up with CDs and MP3 players can't appreciate the effort that went into recording the perfect mix. Yes, the mixtape was a unique symbol of my generation.Unfortunately, my first experience with the mix tape was not a good one. It was a ninth grade when Carrie in the grade below me made a collection ...

Taking Responsibility
2007-10-06 15:28:00
In an era where rap stars place blame on their environment, where a president will continue to not admit that he was wrong despite overwhelming evidence stating otherwise, and where athletes maintain that they were quoted out of context, Marion Jones' public apology was one of the most dramatic moments that I have ever seen. It was a rare glimpse into the a public figure literally falling from grace. However, the most important lesson that we can take from this experience is the fact that she was honest and took responsibility for her actions.Marion Jones did not blame others. In fact, she states that she "did a very stupid thing".That's incredible.Just a few years ago, baseball fans were willing to forgive Jason Giambi for an apology where he he apologized without saying why he was apologizing. He is beloved and given a pass because he finally spoke the "truth". Huh?Yet, already many are rejecting the very words out of Jones' mouth. And I find that to be unfair. For those still...

I Want To Be One Of The Talking Heads
2007-10-02 21:49:00
No, no. Not of of the seminal New Wave acts of the late 1970s.I mean one of those who have an opinion on everything. One who the cable chat fests love to bring on because they can "really stir the pot". One who the bloggers love to love. Or love to hate. And still they have cult status!Though the trillions of shoutfests, debates, and clip shows, I've always wanted to be a Talking Head. If only for a day.Okay, five minutes.I've wanted to be one of those people who is at some remote location, in front of some phony mock drawing of (insert city here) or a picture window showing (insert city here), where the bombastic host of any given show looks directly into the camera and asks a question pertaining to whatever is hot in cable televisions 24-second news cycle, and then says, "We will now talk to Brian XYZ of notable blog '...but I digress.' What do you think...?" And then my moment of glory.I get to opine on the given issue. Of course, it would be pithy yet funny. The host would ch...

The End of An Era
2007-10-01 04:55:00
The final out of Sunday night's Atlanta Braves - Houston Astros' game was more than an end to the Braves' 2007 campaign. It signalled an end to a marvellous era of televised sports that started out with an eccentric's plan to fill time between old black and white reruns on a little know, little watched UHF television outlet in 1970s Atlanta.I realize that it may be hyperbole to say that Ted Turner revolutionized the way America watches sports. So, I won't go down that route. Instead, I will simply say that Turner filled the void for town and Americans without professional sports teams. He gave them the Atlanta Braves. It is easy for me to say that I became a Braves fan by virtue of my grandmother living in suburban College Park, Georgia. But that wouldn't be necessarily the truth. While she certainly strengthened my love of the team, it was Turner and his "superstation" WTBS which brought the team closer to my heart. Literally.Living in the unglamorous burg of Davenport, Io...
"Turn Off The Lights"
2007-10-01 04:52:00
The Beloved's season came to end against the Houston Astros.A 3-0 loss. And while I am disappointed that the Atlanta Braves will not be making the playoffs for the second consecutive season, I can take solace in that those choking dogs (a.k.a. the New York Mets) will also be home this October. (And to think that everyone was praising this team as the class of the league, the best general manager in the game, and the game's "most exciting player".)The Braves finish the season with 84 wins and 78 losses. Not quite the season I imagined back in March but I also didn't expect for Mike Hampton to miss another season, the Bob Wickman implosion, Mike Gonzalez to get injured within the first month of the season, Scott Thorman to not hit and Andruw Jones to hit .220 for most of the season. Those are not excuses as every team has their ups and downs in a given season. But if just one of the aforementioned ills turned the other way, then the Braves may be preparing for the post-season.On the ...

Jamie Foxx. A Star?!
2007-09-24 20:58:00
Jamie Foxx received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. No, your eyes did not deceive you. He actually received a star on the Walk of Fame. Now, for Foxx and his few fans, this is crowning achievement on an otherwise middling career. But I question whether this man's "talents" actually justify such an honor.Jamie Foxx is omnipresent when it comes to awards shows (look at his drunken appearance at MTV Video Music Awards for an example) and discussions about his famous Hollywood parties. However, Foxx is the embodiment of today's "star" culture. One chance turn at success and someone who is a B-lister at best, suddenly gets the star "treatment". It is true that Foxx received an Oscar for his dead-on impersonation of Ray Charles, but that is not enough for him to get a Hollywood start let alone features. How do I come to this conclusion? As yourself this question, "Does anyone ever say, 'Hey, do you want to catch that new Jamie Foxx movie?'?"The obvious answer is no. Foxx is far fro...

6-1.What a way to end the season. Great pitching. Comeback wins. Timely hitting. And knocking the Brewers out of the playoff race.If I didn't know any better, I would bet that the Beloved Atlanta Braves were challenging for a playoff spot, or preparing for the post-season.However, for the second consecutive year, the Braves will not be playing in October.Yet you would not know this by watching the team play over he past week. The Braves finally got consecutive starts from their starting five. Who know that JoJo Reyes and Buddy Carlye could have such great starts?Chipper Jones is battling for the lead league in batting average and closing in on another season of 30 home runs.Tex looks like he may want to make Atlanta his home. (Aren't C. Jones and Tex a fantastic 3-4 punch?)Yunel Escobar continues to make a push for Rookie of the Year. Though he will not get it, he is certainly forcing the Braves to make an decision on what position he will play in 2008. We knew he had the defense, ...

Barack Obama And The Race About Race
2007-09-21 23:54:00
Today's Brian Lehrer Show posed an interesting question to Black listeners. The question was "What does Barack Obama 's race mean to you on a personal level and how will it figure into your presidential decision?"After the question, he explained that he came to the idea after a Black friend of his saw words such as "inexperience" and "newcomer" as code words or excuses for why Obama should not be elected. As I've told many friends, I have had the great fortune of meeting Obama during his initial run for the state senate in Illinois. He was as engaging then as he is now and I recall telling my family that this man will do great things in the future. Yet, as excited as I am for his campaign, I never considered his race as a factor of whether to support his candidacy. The primary reason may have to do with my background. I am a liberal, Black man from the midwest. I've had the great fortune to witness the benefits of past generations which I understand that it is not entirely improba...

Taking Music Forward

The MTV Video Music Awards has long come and gone, though you would not know that with all the publicity surrounding Britney Spears' performance and whiner, I mean rap producer, Kanye West's tantrum. (I mean, really, who gets upset for not winning a Video Music Award? A Grammy, I can understand. But a VMA?!)Rest assured that after watching this program for years, I still have no idea about what is actually being awarded. Is the artistry of the music video? Is it the song? Do you have to be a big star? I just wished I knew what was the criteria for selecting the nominees and the winners. One of the unsung winners of the night was also one of the unsung groups of the past year: Gnarls Barkley.Yes, I know you are familiar with Cee-Lo and Danger Mouse's amalgam of rock, hip-hop, and soul through their haunting (and omnipresent) "Crazy" which may have been one of the songs of the summer of 2006. But after that song, they really didn't get much play on American radio.Having heard their...

Those Choking Dogs
2007-09-19 17:54:00
As a fan of the Atlanta Braves, I have resigned myself to the fact that my boys will not be making the playoffs for the second consecutive season.(Yes, they are not mathematically eliminated but there are better odds of a Republican attending to a minority-based debate than the Braves making the postseason in 2007.)But I can at least take heart that even if the New York Mets go to the playoffs, they will not just roll in.The past week has been fabulous for those of us cheering against the Metropolitians. When the Braves lost to the Mets 4-3, their radio announcers mentioned that the magic number was reduced to ten, and with the Phillies coming in for a three game set, the Mets could "place the final nail in the NL East coffin". The Phillies promptly swept the series. Add this to the Mets losing their first two games of this week to the Nationals and now we have a race.I guess the Mets just take their time when sealing the coffin. For some reason, there are baseball analysts which stil...

Deliver Us From Screamin' A.
2007-09-18 21:20:00
Yesterday, I happened to come across a press release from the All Sports Network announcing the fact that Stephen A. Smith is going to be their national radio host from 3-4p Eastern. And this morning, like all others who live in the New York area, I get my news from Hot 97's Miss Jones In the Morning. (Of course, I say this tongue in cheek. But she is the top rated morning show in the area and therefore, whatever misinformation she exudes (and listening to that show, there is plenty), there is likely to have some small effect. Needless to say, I nearly broke my leg in the shower when I heard Miss Jones state, "It is about time that some articulate Brothers are heard on the radio....".I know that Miss Jones has no idea about Mike Tirico. And this could be because he actually is a man in his mid- to late-30s who doesn't cater to a younger demographic on the All Sports Network. In fact, Miss Jones and the crew sounded as if they think that Tirico is actually Stuart Scott. But that's ...

New York's Nightmare...Is Now A National Problem
2007-09-17 23:44:00
I've been warning you about Stephen A. Smith's radio show. Now, he's going national. At least you're getting only an hour of him.We, in the New York area, are stuck with THREE HOURS starting September 20th.If you really want to hear a legitimate sports show, go to ESPN Radio and listen to Mike Tirico from starting at 1PM. Then go to NPR from 3-7. Then return for Brandon Tierney's show.In fact, I've start to just avoid the overbearing, misinformed, scared to offend the hands that pay them network that is ESPN Radio and chosen just to spend my day being informed by WNYC.Maybe we alll should do the same.Afterall, there really is a world beyond sports. And when it comes to Stephen A., the fewer listeners...the better. However, I am estatic that there is a Black voice on ESPN Radio. Maybe he will give some perspective that is missed during the "racial" conversations held by Mike & Mike and Colin Cowherd. And Mike actually has a reasoned approach to sports. The Saints Defense Is Truly Offensive!
2007-09-17 17:37:00
It's bad enough that I had to suffer through the Braves losing 2 out of 3 to the New York Mets and virtually seal their second consecutive season not making the playoffs. It's even worse that I have to hear my dad tell me about how Northwestern lost to lowly Duke on Saturday night. A Duke team which lost 22 consecutive games before heading to Evanston. And then I have to deal with this? The New Orleans Saints losing to Tampa and going 0-2 in what was to be "their" season.I could possibly deal with the Saints and their slow start on offense. Things will pick up as the season continues. I firmly believe that. But that defense?!What defense? When there is an anemic offense like the Bucs running up and down the field, picking on the Saints secondary as if it was 50 Cent beating down Kanye West (lyrically and physically), then we all know the Saints have problems. And it will not get any easier if any coach reviews game tape over the first two Saints games. The Titans come to The Big Easy nex...

Playing Out the String
2007-09-17 15:40:00
Another week of .500 baseball. But the biggest blow was losing two very winnable games and the New York Mets. Now, my Braves are on the outside looking in and the gloom of second consecutive season without post-season baseball is becoming a reality. That 4-3 loss against the Mets is one that still sticks in my craw. (And if you know where my craw is, please tell me because I have no idea.)The biggest sore point over the past week again has been the pitching but there is not too much you can do about it now.Plus, injuries to Chipper and Andruw force the Braves to thow a second-class lineup for the past few weeks. The bright spot: Tim Hudson's gem yesterday afternoon. My Beloved is now playing out the string a mere 5 1/2 out of the wild card, 7 1/2 off the division pace.

The MTV Awards: Past Its Prime
2007-09-10 23:29:00
I watched last night's MTV Video Music Awards with horror. And not because of Britney Spears' performance.Because in reality, Spears' opening act said as much about the state of the video music channel and pop music as it did about her career. We're in a long, cold winter before any sunshine can be seen from pop music.Last night's program showed that pop music is devoid of the talent and star power which keeps it relevant. And when the star wattage is as bad as the music being honored, it keeps me (and the rest of music lovers) anxious for the next big thing. It would be easy for those who are younger than me to dismiss my rants as coming from a man in her early-30s who just doesn't get it. But they're wrong. As I've written in previous posts, I've been in love with pop music for as long as I can remember and appreciate contemporary music for what its worth. And last night proved to me that there is nothing to appreciate...with the exceptions of Justin Timberlake.Besides the ...

There was a point in time when a 4-2 week would be a great week for the Atlanta Braves.Unfortunately, that was back during the early summer when the Braves were treading water in the division. Now, 4-2 is still a good week but the loses come as the Mets threaten to pull away with the division. And even worse, there are three teams ahead of the Braves for the wild card spot.I am not ready to waive the white flag just yet. With a series against the Mets and Phillies this week, the Braves have a chance to make a race out of the National League East. (Yes, I do dare to dream.) Or at the very least, the Braves can make some inroads into the still very possible Wild Card. First, the Braves can ill afford to lose to the Metropolitians. A sweep is unlikely but right now, there is no room for error.Second, the Braves need to get solid starting pitching from those not named John Smoltz or Tim Hudson. And finally, the relief corps need to step up once the Braves have the lead.I'm certainly askin...

The Same Ol' Saints
2007-09-07 15:12:00
This time yesterday, I was cautiously optimistic about my Saints debut for the 2007 season. The team came off a stellar season and to borrow a line from The Little One's favorite 80s song, "The Only Way Is Up". (Though I never really like Yaz and The Plastic Population, I have to admit that the song was quite catchy...but I digress.)I explained to everyone tha the reason I was excited was that the Saints were going to be in the national spotlight. Since the 1979, I've grown accustomed to the Saints not getting their "shine" (as the kids say) from the national media. And when they did, they got drubbed.Thumped.Got their tails handed to them. And then came last year when the Saints actually won. And won big when playing on national televison.Of course this trend would continue into 2007 when the Saints will appear at least six times on nationally featured games. And by the time I woke up this morning, I have to admit that I don't feel good. My boys didn't look too good last night. I...
Let's Tee It Up: "The Saints Are Coming"
2007-09-06 17:39:00
As a fan of the New Orleans Saints since the time I was five years old, I am a strange sense of joy about the upcoming season. There are people who actually believe that the Saints have enough to go to the Super Bowl. And that sounds funny to my ears.Nearly forty years of inept football and now the fortunes of my fair team may have turned.Tonight's test: The Indianapolis Colts.Going into the 2007 campaign, the Saints have what I like to term as a "video game" offense. Drew Brees just sets up and allows Reggie Bush, Deuce, and others to find their way once they get the ball. So putting up points won't be a problem.Unfortuantely, in football, a great team has to play defense. Unfortunately, the Saints are a team that doesn't have one.If they can somehow step it up, the Saints will be great. But will only go as far as a defense that cannot stop even my Northwestern Wildcats. And thereinlies my problem.Still, I expect big things from the Saints.Tonight is only the beginning of somethin...

When It Rains, It Pours
2007-09-04 16:41:00
This time last week, I was feeling excited about the Braves' prospects for the postseason.Sure, they were in third place and six games out of first, but the overall task did not seem that daunting. All the Braves had to do is take at least two out of three against the Marlins and then two out of three against the Mets.Of course, the Braves lose two out of three to Florida and the Mets sweep them.In the process, the Braves are now 7.5 games off the division lead and fifth place in the Wild Card standings.Against the Marlins, the pitching failed.Against the Mets, the Braves were held to just four runs.Things look bleak, but the season is far from over. Now is the time that the Braves need a run of at least four or five games with a win. And the Braves can ill afford to lose a game to the Phillies at this stage of the season. On the bright side, I moved to NJ and got the final month of the baseball package, so I can watch my beloved Braves for the first time since May 15th.I guess it th...
Besides The Obvious, What Do George Michael And Ne-Yo Have In Common?
2007-08-28 16:17:00
As summer comes to a close, it is fairly obvious that there will be certain songs that will be associated with the Summer of 2007.For awhile, it appeared that Hurricane Chris' "Ay Bay Bay" would be the song of the summer but that song faded away like cotton candy in my niece's mouth.T-Pain was omnipresent with "Buy You A Drank", "Bartender" (actually one of my favorites), and a strange but noteworthy appearance on R. Kelly's "Same Girl" remix (which has some questionable lines, a Michael Jackson ripoff, and Kelly "honoring" the South with his rendition of "A Drink and My Two-Step").And of course, there was Rhianna and "Umbrella" - a song that really proves that you don't need to have a voice or talent to make it in pop music. (Boy, didn't I just write something you didn't already know.)Still, my nominee for the Song of the Summer would have to Neyo's "I Just Wonder". The song is perfect for the season: flowing, catchy, singing about a lost love - everything that represents su...

The last week saw the Beloved go 2-5. Bob Wickman was released. (Thank goodness!)Again, JoJo Reyes had a horrific start and yet everyone tells me that he has the makings of a great pitcher. (I've heard the same about Phil Hughes.)Andruw is hurt. (And it's bad enough that he's actually sitting out games.) Chipper is hurt. (But we're used to him sitting out.) Renteria is hurt. (And Yunel Escobar continues to play solid shortstop, hit for a great average, and continue rumors that Renteria will be traded in the offseason.)And if Smoltz or Hudson isn't the starter, the odds of the Braves winning seem to decrease, no matter how many runs they score. Now, comes a pivitol week in the season. With the Marlins and Los Mets coming to town, the Braves must win or being out of the division by Labor Day.
