At Least Mark Teixeira WIll Keep Us Smiling!
2007-08-22 18:37:00
I once thought that I knew heartache back when my first love and I broke up during the Summer of 19990.But that did not seem to be as bad as hearing about the Braves losing last night to the Cincinnati Reds.Leading 7-2 then losing 8-7 is a fine line between heartache and heartburn. But at least we have Mark Teixeira .And this song.Maybe if I laugh enough, the tears of the Braves third, fourth, and fifth starters will go away.Maybe. (Note to Joey Salvia of "The Michael Kay Show": THIS is player's anthem!)

Heading into the week, the Braves are five game out of first place. That isn't a lead that is insurrmountable, but it is five games with about seven weeks left in the season. The good thing is that the Braves still have series against a beatable Mets team that can help reduce the lead. On the flip side, the Braves have troubles winning games where the starting pitcher isn't John Smoltz or Tim Hudson. If Buddy Carlye, Chuck James, and (insert name of random fifth starter here) could just pitch six strong innings giving up less than three runs, the Braves are in business. But with those three spots, you never know what you're going to get. And during this past week, what we got was the bad. Yet, I still maintain that James has it in him to become a very solid number three. Now is the time for him to prove it to me.Despite the Braves losing two out of three to Arizona, this week was special for me as a Braves fan. It gave me perspective on just how long I have been following this team ...

"Let's Get Down And Party!"
2007-08-19 20:55:00
It's a lazy Sunday afternoon in what could possibly be my final weekend that the Boogie Down is my official residence. The majority of the posts for the past two weeks have been centered around baseball. And even when I did write about somthing other than sports, for the most part, the writing has been on the negative side. (Just think of the week the Braves had and you will understand why these posts have been a little on the down side lately.) So, today, I present a treat: a bit of positivity to assure you that the world has not gone mad. (Even when a monkey refuses to be caged and breaks out twice. It's still all good!)My gift to you is one of the most creative videos made: Daft Punk's "Around The World".On occasion, I have professed my life for the pop instrumental. And I have also discussed my love for creativity when it comes to music. This band did it all in this 1997 piece. It's fun and you can't help but smile when the Skeletons dance in unison with the rest of the a...

Kenny G.: The Bain of My Musical Existence
2007-08-16 18:40:00
Over the past thirty-four years, if there is one thing that I've learned it's that life is full of mysteries. I mean, how else can you explain that men actually found Britney Spears attractive when she was all but 16 years old and in the same vein, the media is all a titter about her, Kevin Federline , and their child? For instance, last night, I actually found myself going through the pages of Us Weekly with Ms. 809 and discussing the merits of so-called starlets such as Jennifer Lopez (a woman with no discernible talent other than finding men who can help further her career and plastic surgeries), Lindsay Lohan (a girl with no discernible talent other than getting high and wrecking cars), and Katie Holmes (a woman with no discernible talent other than pretending to be married and supposedly having a baby). But there I was, flipping through the tabloidish glossies, and wondering how these people ever became famous. And then I come to work the following morning. While I love my e...

The Best Game Shows Ever!
2007-08-13 23:39:00
Today, the world of popular culture mourns the loss of Merv Griffin. And why not?He was the creator of a multitude of game shows, talk shows, and other forms of entertainment that has truly become synonymous with television coming of age through out the 1960s and into the 1970s. And while I will miss Merv, I must admit that I'm tired of hearing about "Jeopardy". In fact, I can't stand the show in its current incarnation with Alex Trebek. He's merely a host of a show that shows how much worthless knowledge one has retained, not how smart they are. (Of course, the show proves that my father and I have gathered a lot of useless trivia in our short time on this Earth. What does this say about us? On second thought, don't answer that.) Today, however, should not be used as a day to memorialize "Jeopardy" There have been far better game shows on television. (And in fact, the only good thing to come out of the show was a parody by Weird Al.)And I'm here to list what I deem to be the To...

Travelling WIthout Moving
2007-08-13 15:46:00
I've already written about the Braves winning two out of three against the Mets.So just when I figured that the Braves would get on a roll, they promptly lose two out of three to the Philadelphia Phillies. But the key thing is that those were games that the Braves should have won.Octavio Dotel gives up the game winning hit on Friday night and yesterday, a key play by Martin Prado (not stepping on second base on a double pay - when is that ever called?!) lead to the Phillies rallying and winning the series. That stinks. (Stinks.)During the past week, Yunel Escobar appears to be more than capable of playing shortstop. So, Edgar Rentaria's absence isn't taking a great toll on the Atlanta offense. The Braves starters have pitched fairly well, but Lance Cormier is up to his old tricks proving that the number five spot in the rotation is still a problem.Chipper Jones is batting .340 but Jeff Francoeur is hovering around .300 batting .390 since July 1st. Which is more bizarre? And our good...

Once Again: Rivaly? What Rivalry?!
2007-08-09 21:44:00
I've been writing too many sports posts over the past few weeks. And I promise that it will come to an end. However, I just can't help making another post about how the New York Metropolitans desperately want a rival but can't find one in Atlanta. The Braves, yet again, took two out of three from The Mets. And despite what Willie Randolph might say, the Braves actually had a better chance of taking all three games than the Mets did.So now, my Braves are 3.5 out of first. But most importantly, the Mets and their fans realize that a rivalry only exists when the two teams are competitive. And also when the opposition takes you as an equal.Right now, like the previous 15 seasons, the Mets are just as much of a rival to the Braves as are the Arizona Diamondbacks. Or the hammer to the nail.

756: The New Home Run Standard
2007-08-08 06:04:00
Back on April 8, 1974, I was a wee lad (just short of a year) listening to Hank Aaron hit his 715th home run via radio while sitting in my mother's arm as she and my dad were enjoying the view of the Mississippi River from the Davenport, Iowa levee.Of course, I was not cognizant as to what I was hearing. But since he was an Atlanta Brave, I'm certain I must have let out a yelp or two.Twenty-three years later, via radio again, I heard John Miller make his call of Barry Bonds hitting his record breaking 756th home run.I immediately started clapping, then had to text friends, and call my dad (who was dead asleep).Simply told, as a true baseball fan, I'm happy (nay, ecstatic) to have witnessed a part of baseball history. The sad part is that immediately sports writers began their assault on Bonds' character and his alleged steroids use. And their bashing lasted through this morning's newspapers and radio talk shows.Honestly, the "steroids era" probably started in the mid-1980s and l...

Time For The Mid-Summer Exam
2007-08-06 17:34:00
The last week saw some major changes to the Beloved Atlanta Braves.Of course, these have been well documented and there is no need for me to repeat the fact that Mark Teixeria and Octavio Dotel were welcome additions as the Braves look towards making a move in the National League East.On the bright side, the Braves went 4-2 during the first week of August but are still 4.5 games out of first place. That could change as the Braves come to New York to take on the Metropolitians for a three-game set. From listening to the Mets broadcast last night, the Mets are taking this series to heart. So much so that they are pitching John Maine on Thursday instead of his previously scheduled Friday start. But that's coming up.The big blow this week was the fact that Edgar Renteria will spend 15 days on the disabled list. This will give young phenom Yunel Escobar a staring role in a big series. He will play shortstop everyday and in turn give Kelly Johnson the full-time second baseman's job as opp...

It's Time For Football Already?!
2007-08-03 17:17:00
Anyone remotely comparing that opening of the exhibition football season with the first games of basbeball's spring training is really stretching. But I do have to admit anticipation for the upcoming football season as the New Orleans Saints are being recognized as one of the National Foot ball Conference's top teams. My boys play in the Hall of Fame Game on Sunday evening. Of course, I'm excited that the Saints will get a national game but c'mon, it's the Hall of Fame game. I'd be lucky if the Reggie Bush, Drew Brees, Deuce, and the gang play for more than one series. By the time the second half starts, half the players on the field will never play in another NFL game. Exhibition or otherwise. So, in the meantime, I came across a great post from Teathered Swimming. It's titled "Like Peanut Butter and Chocolate" and compares the presidential candidates to professional football teams. It's a great idea. And, guess who is an apt match for the New Orleans Saints.Let's just hope th...

Short Takes: Why A-Rod's 500th Isn't A Big Deal
2007-08-02 21:47:00
The last week has seen the New York Yankee cheerleaders (anyone associated with the All Sports Network, Michael Kay, John Sterling, et. al.) make numerous excuses for why Alex Rodriguez has yet to hit his 500th home run.But what has really gotten my goat over the last few days is how everyone is making a big deal over the fact that A-Rod will be the youngest player ever to reach the milestone. Now, of course, the All-Sports Network is making A-Rod's feat probably the most celebrated 500th home run in the history of baseball. They cut into their television and radio broadcasts and have directed their radio personalities to discuss this feat whenever they discuss Barry Bonds hitting his record-tying 755th home run. It is obvious that they, and other sports media outlets, are using Alex Rodriguez's home run to frame him as the eventually home run "king". As far as we know, Rodriguez has not used performance enhancing drugs. Plus, the media loves the facts that A-Rod gives them quotes,...

Sometimes, You Have To Let Go...
2007-08-01 16:21:00
Being a fan of the Atlanta Braves was an exercise in fun over the past two days. When I went to sleep Sunday night, I was content having Julio Franco and Jarrod Saltalamacchia platoon at first base, the prospect of Elvis Andrus being an infield staple (maybe the Braves version of Rey Ordonez, with a little more pop) come 2009, and the fact that Kyle Davies will be equally brilliant and frustrating until the organization gives up on him in a year or two.But then came Monday and by this morning, my favorite team is radically changed.Enter Mark Teixeira and Octavio Dotel (among other pickups). Exit Salty, Andrus, Davies, and a host of other prospects. And to be honest, I'm not upset. I've written earlier this week about the prospect of adding Tex to the Braves lineup. No need for me to repeat those statements. Same for Dotel to a bullpen that is overworked and giving up crucial leads over the past month.Today, it's about the prospects and the believe that Atlanta may have mortgaged th...

Another Below .500 Week
2007-07-30 22:14:00
The good news is that I know that I will be able to watch the Belo ved in about two or three weeks when my move to the Garden State is complete. (No more, DirectTV for me! Hello, Comcast. I hear it's "Comtastic"!)The bad news is that while I wasn't able to watch the Braves, I did know that they lost four in a row while on their tour of San Francisco and Phoenix.Just when you think that things are going right, they somehow fall apart. At times, it's a bad start by the pitcher. Other times, it's the inability to hit in crucial situations. And other times, it's that the opposing team's start was nothing short of brilliant. So, the Braves drop a few games in the standings and are now 4 games out of first. And in third place. But it doesn't look as if the Braves are through dealing. Now comes word that the Braves are set to acquire Octavio Dotel for either Brandon Jones or Scott Thorman. After getting Big Tex, it appears that there is no room left at the inn for the strappin' Canadia...

Welcome To Atlanta, Tex!
2007-07-30 12:08:00
Though it's not quite the Fred McGriff coming to Atlanta in 1993, the Beloved just traded three noted prospects for Mark Teixeira of the Texas Rangers.Salty, we hardly knew ye, but his talents are far better served as a catcher than a first baseman. As a catcher, Salty has the potential to be one of the finest in the game. However, as a first baseman, his numbers will be nothing more than the league average. That doesn't suit the Braves in short term. As for 18 year-old Elvis Andrus, he appears to have plenty defensive skills but there is some questions about his bat. True, he is young but Atlanta has plenty of middle infield prospects. ((I'm sure Elvis is cursing the great year Yunel Escobar is having which pretty much ran him out of the organization.)Now the Braves a switch-hitting first baseman that has Gold Glove skills, hits for average and power. Place him behind Chipper Jones and right before Andruw Jones and Jeff Francouer. Now, the Braves have the best hitting lineup in ...
A New York City Anthem Is Crowned
2007-07-25 21:47:00
One of the pleasures of driving is being able to listen to the radio. However, most of my friends will agree, that my return to the road is not necessarily a good thing. Not because of my driving skills. But because of the fact that my hour long trip to work (and my ninety minute trip home) makes me a captive audience for commercial radio.Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy sports talk (and you know that by reading many of my previous posts). But one can only hear the likes of Michael Kay talk about how well the New York Yankees are playing against bottom feeders with the glee of a schoolgirl. So, while waiting for the likes of Brandon Tierney or the New York Met games, I have no problems admitting that I listen to Funkmaster Flex on Hot 97.Yes, it's urban culture at it's best. And as a native Midwesterner and 34 years old, I just might be out of his demographic. But I love it. And everyone is starting to get fed up with me reciting the latest lines from the "hottest" songs.Often, it'...

"Look At All These Rumors..."
2007-07-24 15:59:00
So, did you hear the rumor about the Beloved trading Edgar Renteria to the Chicago White Sox for John Garland?Okay, so now you did.And as much as I like the Colombian shortstop and think that he's having a fine season, this might be trade that may be difficult for the Brave fans to dispute.Plus, it's one of those rare "name" player trades which actually helps both teams.Though Renteria is having an excellent season, the Braves have a fine prospect in Yunel Escobar. Kelly Johnson has provided more than what most fans expected at second base (though I drafted him in the 24th round of my fantasy draft as a 2B/OF just knowing that his rookie season was an aberration) leaving Escobar to get spot duty at 3B (when Chipper Jones was hurt) or spelling Edgar or KJ (which isn't too often).By trading Edgar, the Braves take salary off the books (maybe apply that to one Andruw Rudolph Jones?) and prepare the Braves for their next generational run through the addition of Garland. Imagine, the r...

Still Trying To Figure Out The Braves? So Am I.
2007-07-23 12:59:00
I just can't figure out my Beloved Atlanta Braves .This past week, the Braves went 2-5. And that included getting swept by the Cincinnati Reds. And yet, it did not feel as if the Braves had such a bad week."Feel" is the operative word because looking back, it was horrible. Losing games in extra innings, losing games with poor pitching, you know he deal.If anything, last night's game against the St. Louis Cardinals typified the Braves struggles. Braves played well but missed key scoring opportunities. And the relief pitching failed again. On the bright side, Andruw Jones is starting to hit. Willie Harris went 6 for 6. And Julio Franco returned to Atlanta after a horrible year and half with the New York Mets.Even more surprising is the fact that Chipper Jones leads the National League in hitting!Ah, those trade rumors. The best ones I've heard this week center on the Beloved obtaining Ian Snell from the Pirates or Scott Olsen from the Marlins. Of course, the obvious names being mentio...

A True King Leaves The Throne With Pride
2007-07-22 16:54:00
Of course, the big buzz today will be that Barry Bonds will not play against the Milwaukee Brewers. But it should come as no surprise because Bonds normally doesn't play on Sunday. Even if this particular Sunday game comes after a Saturday day game. That's just the way a 42-year old baseball uses his vacation days in 2007.Yet, tomorrow, Bonds returns home to the Friendly Confines of what used to be called Pac Bell Park to take on the Atlanta Braves. And finally, catch Henry Aaron as baseball's all-time home run king. You might ask how can I be so sure that Bonds will hit his record home runs against the Beloved? And I will tell you it is because he always hits home runs against the Braves. (In fact, I always maintain that my apartment would not have been robbed if only I stayed up to watch Bonds smack two home runs against the Braves on May 13, 2003. I went to sleep early and someone mysterious came into my apartment, stole only my then-girlfriend's laptop computer, and then walked ...

News Flash: Bonds Wasn't The Only One!
2007-07-21 16:23:00
As Barry Bonds approaches the home run record, I find myself become more frustrated with the "reporting" and "analysis" in the various sports media.By listening to sports talk radio, reading the sports columnists, or even watching the theoretically unbiased SportsCenter, it is apparent that the media wants the nation to feel upset about Bonds breaking Aaron's record.I find this school of thought hypocritical and lacking journalistic integrity.First, what bothers me about the sports media portrayal of Bonds breaking the record is that they focus on the steroids issues. While there is a considerable amount of physical (er, visual) evidence against Bonds, by paying attention to the sports media, one would be lead to believe that Bonds was the only player who used steroids. And while Bonds is certainly not a media darling, the same press is giving passes or not even including players who numbers are even more skewed than Bonds. Those who have followed the sport realize that Bonds has goo...

As I have stated in previous posts both on "...but I digress." and "The B-Side", I have a fascination with theme songs.I just think that nothing can introduce a program better than a short song that states what you're about to enjoy. And when it comes to radio themes songs, I have to give props to the corps at WEPN 1050AM in New York. The programs featuring Max Kellerman, Stephen A. Smith, and Brandon Tierney are on-point. (And yes, you read Stephen A. But this is a rare occasion where you will see me give him credit for anything other than leaving the television airwaves and that won't be happening anytime soon. To my dismay.)Unfortunately, I don't know the person responsible for their themes songs but I can guarantee you that the songs are golden.Max's theme notes his trademark beard, his boxing knowledge, his time slot (so deftly worded as "right after Mike & Mike and right before Stephen A.") and even incorporates his "Mets Rant" segment at 10:50AM. All done over a Wu-Tang Cl...

It was taken two days ago and features an Indian lad taking a cool dip in the Arabian Sea, just outside of Mumbai, India.Considering the humidity in Gotham City today, I would love to be him right now!

She IS New York!
2007-07-16 20:04:00
It is commonplace that an artist is automatically identified with a city. For instance, upon hearing the opening notes of an R. Kelly song or a Common single, we automatically think of Chicago. And for a period of time, Van Halen, Guns 'N Roses, Snoop Dogg, and Ice Cube were synonymous with different areas of Los Angeles. However, despite Biggie Small's tales of 1990s Brooklyn, it is Suzanne Vega that might be the quintessential storyteller of New York .Like many, I first became familiar with Vega through the folk-pop of "Luka" and DNA's 1991 classic remix of "Tom's Diner". Yet she is so much more than those two iconic songs. Her latest release "Beauty and Crime" has been best described as a valentine to the city that I now call home. However, that phrase is appropriate nearly every song that she writes. As a lifelong resident of The City (including Chelsea and the Lower East Side), it is apparent that Vega captures what really makes this city work. Not only does Vega seem to captur...

Cafe Tacuba: On Second Thought...
2007-07-16 15:45:00
So yesterday, I wrote a review of the SummerStage concert sponsored by the Latin Alternative Music Conference in which I ripped the performances of La Sista and Cafe Tacuba .(If you remember, I loved Pacha Massive but just thought they did not have stage presence. Still, you MUST buy their latest release "All Good Things" which proves that the Boogie Down can do more than just rock the mic.)I spoke to three friends yesterday who maintained that I just did not get Cafe Tacuba upon first listen and must give them a second try.For this reason, later this summer, I will listen to more than one disc from the group. And after listening to it, I will write another unbiased review. All I will say is that there songs better be as good as everyone is telling me.

"Find A Way Or Make A Way"
2007-07-16 14:41:00
The Braves week was shortened due to the All-Star game and the Beloved rolled through a three game set with the Pirates. To borrow the old cliche, the Beloved got "timely hitting and good pitching" and Bob Wickman didn't even blow a save.Heading into this week, the Braves are 1.5 games behind the New York Mets. And like every season, Met fans have to feel a little nervous that their team which is supposedly "far more talented" than any other in the league has such a small league. Word in New York is that the team will surge ahead within the next month. But if they don't, many are worried about how the Braves are just hanging around despite playing equally bad baseball. On the trade front, the Braves appear to be looking for a pitcher. The latest rumor has the Braves looking for a talented, young frontline starter. Ian Snell of the Pirates is supposed to be the object of the Braves affection. Word also has the Braves scouting Jose Contreras.Who goes? Well, our good friend Jarrod Salt...

A Boring, Yet Beautiful Day In Central Park
2007-07-15 19:00:00
It's hard to ruin a beautiful day in Central Park .Unless you went to yesterday's Summer Stage presentation.Presented by the Latin Alternative Music Conference, I was bored to tears with the three act set including La Sista, Pacha Massive, and Cafe Tacuba. Those of you who are friends of mine know that when it comes to music, I truly loves anything that has a groove. And these three acts were are lifeless as they come.In the effort of full disclosure, I should add that I have never been a fan of reggaetón. During the past semester, on countless occasions, my students would ask for me to define why I do not like the music. And other than the fact than to describe that it is a one-trick pony in its incorporation of beats and phony hip-hop posturing, I could not come up with a good reason.Until I witnessed La Sista. Her thirty minute performance proved why the genre has never endeared itself to my ears. Despite it's bravado, the music is sterile with the bite of a newborn puppy. There...

Even without the luxury of DirectTV service (please don't get me going on that topic), I am aware the David Beckham has landed in the United States. And now begins the debate over whether a single man can be soccer's "savior".The most ludicrous statement is that David Beckham was brought to the United States to save a sport and a league of which Americans have little interest.I find this statement funny because every year we are bombarded with how the National Basketball Association and the National Football League have plans to "go global" by having their games played on foreign soil. Look at the NFL. In three months, they will have their first regular season game played in Europe when the New York Giants take on the Miami Dolphins. The average American sports fan believes that this is fantastic as it will give Britons a first-hand chance to see American football up close. To them, this small dose of the sport will make Europeans go crazy for a sport that our nation already loves....
If It Is Called Fantasy, Then Can It All Disappear?
2007-07-10 20:54:00
Call it bad sportsmanship, but losing stinks.I should know quite a bit about losing and still, thirty-four year into my so-called life, it still stinks.I've grown up a fan of the Atlanta Braves (when losing was daily occurrence), the New Orleans Saints, and went to Northwestern University. Even my high school team had a chance to make the football playoffs and was disqualified for using an illegal player. (To make matters worse, my coach admitted as much in a newspaper interview following the game.)So losing, is in my blood. But what is worse is losing in fantasy sports.Yes, it is fantasy and the players have no more obligation to me than does Andruw Jones owe me an apology for batting just this much over .200 (but at least I know he is trying). And yet, the reason why fantasy is just as bothersome (nay, even more bothersome) is that I have to deal with two forces that can drive a sane man to drink.First, when you lose in fantasy, you have no one else to blame but yourself.Take this...

42-40. Second place. Two game out of first in the division. Two games out of first in the wild card. And that's how the Beloved go into the All-Star break. As a Braves fan, you can't be too upset. Despite how the team has played over the last month, they are very much in the race.Sure, Bob Wickman's performance over the past month is nothing what you though he might bring to the table when the Atlanta Braves acquired him a year ago. And the starting pitching is still somewhat of a mystery: Which Tim Hudson will the Braves get? Which Kyle Davies will pitch for Atlanta? Is John Smoltz's injury serious? Can JoJo Reyes really save the day? Yes, the pitching is literally full of questions. But we do have some answers regarding the everyday eight.Kelly Johnson is a decent second baseman and improves each day. The left field platoon is about as solid as an position in the game. Saltalamacchia is a keeper. Frenchy has become more patient. Renteria should be an All-Star and the Braves offen...
Gimme Some Of That Old-Time Baseball Broadcasting!
2007-07-06 23:08:00
Over the past six weeks, I have been with the services of DirectTV.Before you gasp, I have come to the realization that I have not missed out on anything. Okay, sure I haven't been blessed by Keith Olberman's "Countdown" and I missed the "expose" on how Cordato's offers lapdance, cheap drinks, and food (talk about your one stop shopping), but really, my world is just fine without watching Joey Fatone's "Singing Bee", The BET Awards, and the "Flavor of Love Charm School" reunion special. (Side note, I already experienced the famed "pizza place", watched too much of BET, and will not comment on Charm School.)And though I have not been able to watch Andruw Jones flirt with hitting below .200, I have not really missed watching baseball. Instead, I reacquainted myself with baseball the way it was meant to be broadcasted - on the radio.Base ball on the radio is truly a treasure.
