Former Notre Dame football player Rocky Bleier was named the 2007 recipient of the Distinguished American Award from the National Football Foundation, announced Wednesday by Ron Johnson, chairman of the NFF.A three-year monogram winner, Bleier played for head coach Ara Parseghian from 1965-67 as a running back and receiver. Notre Dame Football Coach to Build Center for Developmentally Disabled Adul
2007-05-20 16:47:00
Notre Dame football coach Charlie Weis and his wife, Maura, have won approval to build a 30-acre residential center for developmentally disabled adults. The project proposed by the Weis? charity, Hannah and Friends, calls for the eventual construction of up to 16 group homes, each designed to house four adults. There also would be living quarters for caretakers, a recreation center and other amenities. Notre Dame Fighting Irish/Hannah & Friends Bracelets 10 PackThe St. Joseph County Council approved a special ordinance allowing the project to move forward. "This project will put St. Joseph County on the map for its ability to handle special needs individuals," attorney Richard Nussbaum, who represented the coach and his wife, told the council at its Tuesday meeting. The charity is named after Weis? 12-year-old daughter, Hannah, who has global development delay, a form of mental retardation. Weis said he doesn?t know whether his daughter will ever live in the center but that it will be...

Analyzing the Bear's Offseason
2007-05-19 23:49:00
This is what I like about the Chicago Bear s ' offseason moves: They added a game-breaking force in first-round draft pick Greg Olsen, an explosive tight end from the University of Miami who made a surprising slip to the 31st overall spot. Olsen is an outstanding athlete who runs nice routes and shows superb hands. His receiving skills, especially his ability to get open in the seam, should do plenty to help quarterback Rex Grossman gain much-needed confidence as a passer. The Bears devoted the rest of their draft to acquiring players who are solid enough to help immediately in various roles and who have a good chance to break into the starting lineup within the next two seasons. One is second-rounder Dan Bazuin, who joins an already crowded defensive end position. The former Central Michigan standout could use some bulk on his 265-pound frame, which he will have a chance to do in the next year or two before becoming a starter. For now, Bazuin's quickness, his ability to make good use...

Three Things I Can't Wait to See This Fall at Notre Dame
2007-05-15 17:01:00
1. When Charlie Weis and his staff took over at Notre Dame and assessed the talent, they thought that 2007 -- the first post-Quinn season -- would be a year when the Irish took a step back. Now that it's here, Weis has only 10 returning starters, no experience at quarterback and four of the Irish's first six games on the road. Looks like a step back from 9-3 and 10-3 to me. Zephyr Notre Dame Fighting Irish DH Fitted Hat2. No matter whom Weis names as his starting quarterback, the most chips he will place behind an inexperienced man will go behind defensive coordinator Corwin Brown. The 37-year-old has been a coach for six years, following an eight-year career in the NFL. Brown is well-respected and comes from the same Parcells-Belichick tree (three years on Al Groh's staff at Virginia) that bore Weis. Still, it's a big step.3. Even by Notre Dame's standards, few freshmen have been as highly touted as quarterback Jimmy Clausen. Will he turn out better than older brothers Casey (...

Bear and Titan 2004 Draft Grades in 2007
2007-05-12 17:51:00
Chicago Bears : The Bears got four starters out of their draft. The first four picks were all contributors to the Super Bowl team last year. The first-round pick was tackle Tommie Harris, a force in the middle of their defensive line until getting hurt last season. He's a Pro Bowl player. Second-round pick Tank Johnson is a good player when he stays away from off-the-field issues. In the third round, the Bears got speedy receiver Bernard Berrian and in the fourth round they got starting corner Nathan Vasher. Both are good players.Grade: A When you go 4-for-4 with your first four picks, that's special, even if Johnson is an off-the-field problem.Tennessee Titan s: They didn't have a first-round pick, but did have a lot of choices. But of their 13 picks, including three in the second round, they didn't get much bang for their buck. The three second-round picks were tight end Ben Troupe and defensive ends Antwan Odom and Travis Laboy. None has been worth that pick, with Odom held bac...

Almost $10 Million Bid on Bo Duke's General Lee was a Hoax
2007-05-10 16:06:00
A nearly $10 million eBay bid for a car made famous by "The Dukes of Hazzard" seems to have vanished faster than the Duke boys escaping from the sheriff. The Gene ra l Lee's owner ? actor John Schneider, who played the blond heartthrob Bo Duke in the 1980s television series ? is upset that the $9,900,500 winning bid appears to be a hoax. The bid set an eBay record last week.Schneider plans to list his 1969 Dodge Charger with a bricks-and-mortar auction firm that strictly screens buyers, and may file a lawsuit against the bidder, said Allen Stockman, who runs the star's Agoura Hills estate and has sold scripts, memorabilia and other items on eBay for three years. "If this guy was just doing it as a prank or to ruin someone else?s chances, he deserves to be hit in the pocketbook," said Stockman, who gave the winning bidder a negative rating in eBay?s feedback forum.Schneider, 47, was at a promotion in Las Vegas and could not be reached for comment. The winning bidder ? identified on his...

Promoter Dubs De La Hoya-Mayweather ?The Fight of Spring 2007?
2007-05-06 05:20:00
Golden Boy Promo tions, the promotional company hyping this Saturday?s Oscar De La Hoya-Floyd Mayweather , Jr. bout, is beginning to regret hiring a new employee to organize the run-up to the fight.?We are learning the hard way that a fight of this magnitude needs to be handled by someone with years of boxing experience ? someone who really knows how to over-exaggerate the magnitude of something,? said Golden Boy CEO Howard Ramsey. ?Someone who is trained in the fine art of hyperbole. Someone who know how important outright deceit is in convincing the public to fork over their money.?Currently dubbed ?The Fight of Spring 2007? by HBO and Golden Boy Promotions, those close to the fight worry the tagline isn?t enticing enough to get a high number of pay-per-view buys. But Jeff Miller, who is heading up the fight?s promotion, doesn?t want to mislead the consumer.?I had a brainstorming meeting with some of my bosses when this fight was in the planning stages and they suggested we call it ...

Rumblings on Kirk Radomski
2007-05-06 04:17:00
In the 10 years Kirk Rado mski was employed by the Mets, he was a no-name. But the former Mets clubhouse man is about to become the most explosive name in baseball. Players, ex-players, agents and GMs everywhere are, in one source's words, "holding their breath" these days -- because the scandal Radomski is about to unleash is going to be bigger than BALCO.Radomski has named names, cashed checks, worn a wire and implicated many more baseball players than were linked to BALCO. So the question isn't whether many of those names will come out. The question is what happens when they do. MLB may be tempted to suspend players identified by Radomski as buyers and/or users of steroids, HGH and other substances. But one long-time sports attorney warns: "They'll have to be careful. I don't know what they can do to players who have never failed a drug test. They might be able to prove they purchased this stuff. But I doubt if they can prove they used it. And they probably can't even prove th...

Is Rex Grossman worth re-signing?
2007-05-05 16:29:00
The Lance Briggs saga will roll on until training camp and the start of the regular season. Expect Briggs, who hates the franchise tag, to hold out until September. Trade efforts failed and no change is anticipated soon. Briggs knows he is in his final season with the Bears . He just has to decide if he wants to show up. Gross man has a different story. Like Lovie Smith a year ago, Grossman must prove himself to get a second contract from the Bears. Grossman took unfair heat last season. Injuries hurt him early in his career. Though Grossman's numbers weren't flashy, he stayed healthy all season, and he helped take the team to the Super Bowl. The offense likes him as its leader. The Bears are in the middle of a four-year run as a Super Bowl contender. They are the favorites again to win the NFC North. The division might not improve. Grossman is good enough to win the NFC North, but is he good enough to beat Peyton Manning or Tom Brady in a Super Bowl? How well he answers that questi...

Notre Dame Athletic and Academic Success Highlighted by NCAA Report
2007-05-05 04:05:00
Notre Dame is recognized for its academics and its athletics, and Notre Dame student-athletes have demonstrated again that they are not mutually exclusive attributes. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) released its Annual Progress Report for U.S colleges this week and Notre Dame athletes have once again ranked high in academic excellence when compared to peer institutions.Eleven Notre Dame teams were honored for academic distinction - men's basketball, men's cross country, men's fencing, men's golf, men's indoor track and field, men's outdoor track and field, women's fencing, women's soccer, women's softball, women's tennis and women's volleyball.Only the U.S. Naval Academy, Boston College and Stanford had more teams honored for academic performance - Duke University and Rice University also had eleven programs honored. This isn't unusual for Notre Dame, said Senior Associate Athletics Director John Heisler."Generally, this is where we fit in almost any of...

Bo Duke Sells the Dukes of Hazzard's General Lee
2007-05-05 01:28:00
The famous Dodge Charger from 1980s television show "The Duke s of Hazzard" has sold via an Internet auction for an astonishing 9.9 million dollars, according to a page on eBay.com.The 1969 car, known in the series as the "Gene ra l Lee" and the nemesis of Sheriff Roscoe P.Coltrane in numerous chase scenes, was sold by actor John Schneider, who played Bo Duke in the long-running show.It is believed to be the second highest price for a car sold at auction in history. The most expensive car in history was a 1931 Bugatti sold at auction by Christie's in 1987 for 11 million dollars.Schneider's car had been customized with a 8.3 liter engine capable of generating 725 horsepower, with only 16,000 kilometres on the odometer. The Dodge Charger was one of the most symbolic vehicles of America's "muscle car" era, which ended after the 1973 oil crisis.

Chicago Bears 2007 Draft Big Value Board
2007-04-30 01:17:00
The Sporting News has a nice Big Value Board in their NFL Draft Preview issue. Now that the Bears have completed their selections, let's take a look at how they fared. The Big Value Board (BVB)lists all the potential players that they suspect should be drafted along with their projected round. It is a bit quirky as it is not a mock draft, but rather a board that places a value on a player based upon his talent and past performance. Therefore, they listed on 23 players in the first round, but over 90 for the 5th round. It also does not take into account a particular team's need or the strength of a position when compared to others. It rank's the players solely upon their ability. I will also add comments about where their war room scouts ranked players within each position. The Bears picks:1st Round (31st Pick) Greg Olsen TE MiamiBVB Rank: 1st Round 14th overallInteresting note, the BVB actually had Zach Miller ranked as the #1 TE and the 10th overall prospect. Miller was picked by ...

L.A. Times Sports Writer Admits: I'm a Transsexual

A veteran sports writer for the Los Angeles Times said in his column Thursday that he is a transsexual.Mike Penner told readers of his struggle to embrace his gender, and said when he returns from vacation in a few weeks he will be known as Christine Daniels. He did not say whether he was having surgery or why he's changing his last name."I am a transsexual sports writer," Penner wrote. "It has taken more than 40 years, a million tears and hundreds of hours of soul-wrenching therapy for me to work up the courage to type those words."The 49-year-old Penner said his brain has been "wired female" and he's tried to fight off the urge to change sexes. He called writing a story about his sexuality the "most frightening of all the towering mountains of fear I somehow had to confront and struggle to scale.""How do you go about sharing your most important truth, one you spent a lifetime trying to keep deeply buried, to a world that has grown familiar and comfortable with your facade?" Bears Land 2 First Round Picks Among All Time Worst
2007-04-25 19:57:00
In the NFL draft, the only real certainty is that there will be some monumental busts. So what are the criteria for a major bust? If you washed out of the league fast, you probably qualified. Character and production had a lot to do with it, too. Injuries? Those are taken on a case-by-case basis. In many cases, just being a bad player doesn't make for an epic bust. There are a lot of bad players, but they don't all qualify for the worst first-round busts ever. Now, some things can keep you from being a bust. If a player struggles with one team and goes on to be productive for another, they are not necessarily a bust. Nor are they if they never play for the team that drafts them (as with Bo Jackson and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers). It's a lot to digest, and certainly everyone has their own qualifications, but here?s our list of worst busts at every first-round slot since the 1970 NFL merger: (Chicago Bear Players Only Listed Below)12. Joseph Fauria, a nephew of 12-year NFL veteran Christian Fauria, has made an oral commitment to play college football at Notre Dame in 2008.The younger Fauria, a tight end like his uncle, caught 22 passes for 329 yards and four touchdowns last season as a junior at Crespi High School in Encino, Calif. He also had been recruited by UCLA, LSU, Nebraska, Stanford and Colorado, where his uncle played.Christian Fauria also played on two Super Bowl championship teams at New England when Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis was the Patriots' offensive coordinator. The 6-foot-7, 250-pound Joseph Fauria said that was one reason he picked the Irish. "They throw to the tight end a lot," he told the South Bend Tribune. "I've always loved how Charlie Weis runs his offense."He said when he narrowed his college choices to include Notre Dame, he telephoned his uncle Christian, who was released by the Redskins in February. "He told me everything he knew about Charlie Weis," Joseph Fauria said.Fauria anno...

Former Chicago Bears linebacker Dick Butkus is suing a Florida club that hands out an award bearing his name.A lawsuit filed in Los Angeles federal court seeks to stop the Downtown Athletic Club of Orlando from awarding "the Butkus Award."The honor has been awarded to the top college linebacker since 1985.Butkus granted a license to the club to use his name and image for the award without payment. But the lawsuit claims the club "concealed" from Butkus that his signing the agreement would allow the club to bar him from using his own name in connection with a similar award.Butkus' attorney says he wants to take control of the award because "he thinks he can do a better job" at raising money for his favorite charities.

Dollar Bill Wirtz to Sell the Blackhawks?

In 1966, the NHL was celebrating its first million-dollar per year U.S. television contract with U.S. broadcaster CBS, the curved stick was the hottest on-ice trend, and a teenage Boston Bruins defenceman named Bobby Orr was leaving onlookers slack-jawed.It was also the year Bill Wirtz took the reigns as president of the high-octane Blackhawks led by Bobby Hull and Stan Mikita. Now, more than 40 years on, Wirtz says he's poised to sever ties to the NHL charter member. One of the most vilified owners in sports ? he's been nicknamed "Dollar Bill" for his alleged thriftiness when it came to player salaries ? Wirtz says he's worried about who the NHL Players' Association hires as its next leader. After losing $31 million this season and $191 million over the past 10 on the beleaguered Blackhawks, Wirtz said if the players union hires someone cut out of the mould of Bob Goodenow as executive director, he'll hang up a for-sale sign on the Blackhawks. There's a good chance the beleaguer...

Iron Mike Ditka Helps Paralyzed Teen

So much for the gruff, sideline-ranting ''Iron Mike '' image.Former Chicago Bears coach Mike Ditka waived a speaking fee that can fetch up to $30,000, then wrote a $5,000 check Wednesday to help a teen paralyzed from the neck down after a collision in a high school football game last September. The NFL Hall of Famer penned the check quietly as he boarded a flight after speaking to about 250 people who attended a $100-a-plate fundraiser for 17-year-old Travis Hearn of Rock Island.''The gesture at the end of the night is typical of the man,'' said Rock Island football coach Vic Boblett, an organizer of the fundraiser. ''That Coach Ditka did it where he did proves he doesn't need to make a scene with his generosity.''Ditka didn't even mind getting upstaged when Hearn wheeled into the coach's news conference, which was halted by a nearly minute-long ovation as the high school junior made his first public appearance since the accident. No Hitter for Mark Buehrle.... YESSSS!!!
2007-04-19 16:12:00
? Summary: Mark Buehrle hurled the first no-hitter in the big leagues this year, striking out eight while allowing one walk, as the White Sox socked the Rangers 6-0.? Hero: The 28-year-old Buehrle used his efficient delivery and a nasty mix of offspeed stuff and high heat for his first career no-hitter.? Unsung hero: Buehrle was complemented by sparkling defense plays by third baseman Joe Crede, shortstop Juan Uribe and second baseman Tadahito Iguchi, who made a diving stop on Hank Blalock's sharp 5th inning scorcher.? Figure this: It was the 16th no-hitter in ChiSox history and first since Wilson Alvarez threw one at Baltimore on Aug. 11, 1991.? Quotable: "I can't believe I did it. Perfect game would have been nice, too." -- Buehrle? Elias Says: This was the first game in major league history in which one player (Buehrle) threw a no-hitter, another (Jermaine Dye) hit a grand-slam home run, and a third (Jim Thome) had a multiple-homer game.
