Tri Nations: Australia & New Zealand Clash Tomorrow
2007-06-29 17:45:00
The two rivals meet again tomorrow at the MCG. Both squads have played tough games against South Africa with opposite results. The Springboks defeated Australia two weeks ago and lost to the All Blacks last weekend. This means the Tri Nations title is still very much up in the air, but an All Black victory this weekend would put them in the driver's seat.Graham Henry's side has defeated the Wallabies six of the past seven times they have met, including last year's 13-9 victory in what I consider one of the best rugby matches played last year. I'm not sure it will be that close tomorrow.I'm going to say New Zealand should win rather easily, let's say...All Blacks-34Wallabies-19Here are the line ups:Australia15-Julian Huxley; 14-Adam Ashley-Cooper, 13-Stirling Mortlock (capt), 12-Matt Giteau, 11-Lote Tuqiri; 10-Stephen Larkham, 9-George Gregan; 8-Wycliff Palu, 7-George Smith, 6-Rocky Elsom, 5-Dan Vickerman, 4-Nathan Sharpe; 3-Guy Shepherdson, 2-Stephen Moore, 1-Matt Dunning. Yes, we lost 4-1, but for 70 minutes or so, our "C" squad hung with the #5 team in the world, as Argentina sent their top squad to play in the Copa. Eddie Johnson scored the lone U.S. goal on a penalty kick early in the first half and the U.S. finished the first half with a 1-1 draw.

Haven't Been On Alot This Week
2007-06-22 14:41:00
My back has been giving me grief this week, so I haven't blogged as much as I would like to and most likely I won't be on much this weekend either. I just plan on laying around and hopefully recover. Anyways, be sure to check out the South Africa vs New Zealand Tri Nations match this weekend. I believe it comes on around 9am Eastern time on Setanta. Should be a great game.I will see you all on Monday.

32 Years Ago Today, I was born.
2007-06-20 15:11:00
Today is my 32nd birthday, although as I told my wife the other day, sometimes I feel like I'm 72...haha. Anyways, nothing special planned today other than spending time with the two most important people in my life, my wife and my son. I'm sure Dylan will make me a great gift. His father's day card was cute even though he spelled the world "even" wrong. He swears he was just in a hurry. My wife bought me 3 gifts online that will be delivered sometime this week. No matter how hard I try, I can't get her to leak the info on the gifts. I'm terrible when it comes to suprises (got that from my dad) but she is a bit old fashioned and will make me wait until the gifts arrive before I know what I got, which is fine. She makes me laugh because she'll act like she's going to "spill the beans" and just when I think I got it out of her, she smiles and let's me know she's not telling. I have my son this weekend, so maybe we'll all do something special at that point, I just haven't dec...

Reuters: All Blacks Told To Relax
2007-06-19 14:40:00
SYDNEY (Reuters ) - New Zealand coach Graham Henry wants his players to relax instead of hitting the training pitch ahead of this week's Tri-Nations clash with South Africa .Saturday's match has been billed as a possible preview of this year's World Cup final but Henry has ordered his players to stay calm and rest. The All Blacks have been told to play golf or go fishing, with Henry hoping the short break will help the players freshen up before the Durban clash."We don't want to overdo it otherwise we'll be worse off," Henry told the New Zealand Press Association."We've just got to be intelligent as to how we prepare."Despite dominating world rugby for the past three seasons, the All Blacks have always struggled in South Africa. They have lost one match in South Africa each of the past three years, yet have not been beaten by any other team in the world since 2003."It's obviously the biggest challenge that we face in rugby at the moment, which is stimulating," Henry said.
Rico Gear Signs With Worcester
2007-06-18 16:57:00
All Black Rico Gear has signed on to play for the Worcester Warriors. The Blue and Gold just avoided relegation last season in the Guinness Premiership and the hope is the 29 year old will help bolster a squad trying to avoid a relegation battle this season.Gear has scored 10 tries in 18 All Black appearances, including a try this past weekend versus Canada. He was the 2005 Super 12 player of the year while with the Crusaders.

South Africa Defeats Australia
2007-06-17 04:20:00
Well the game lived up to expectations. Took me basically what seemed to be all day before I finally watched the entire game and I'm glad I did. After seeing the blow outs each of the past few weeks, seeing top teir squads fight it out for 80 minutes finally put a smile on my face. The final score was 22-19 in favor of the Springboks and if you noticed, I wasn't too off with my prediction.I just hope next week's game is equally as exciting.

Saturday Update #1: New Zealand Beats Canada
2007-06-16 15:52:00
Well it's saturday and we have some great rugby & soccer ahead of us today, so let's get right down to it.New Zealand -64Canada -13I watched the first half of this one and was shocked as to how well Canada played. The score at the half was 26-13 I believe and was pretty exciting. I fell asleep and missed the rest of the game but apparently the All Blacks woke up in the second half and blew Canada away. They will re-air the game later today on Setanta so I'll get a chance to watch the second half at that time. For a full match recap, click HERE.I was watching the first half of South Africa & Australia before I had to leave to go into the office for a bit. When I left the house, the score was 10-3 in favor of the Springboks. I should get home in time to watch the final 20 minutes or so of the match. So far, just as entertaining as I had hoped.UPDATE: I just checked the score and Australia is now leading at the half by a score of 16-10! Should be a great second half!!!

Weekend Quick Picks
2007-06-15 20:08:00
When I was doing mixed martial arts blogging, I use to have a feature prior to a big UFC or Pride card where I would pick the winners, and I was pretty damn good at it (still am). Most bloggers out there would really break down each fight and then offer a prediction. I'm too lazy for that shit, so I just offered "quick picks" with a very short explanation as to why I made the pick I made. Now that I've launched a rugby blog, I figured I may as well try my hand at picking rugby results as well. Guess we'll see how well I do. Again as I use to tell my MMA readers, if you want some in depth breakdowns, find another blog, you won't find that here. So...here we go...my weekend rugby & soccer picks:Tri NationsSouth Africa -26Australia -19Should be a very good match. I give the nod to South Africa as I feel they are entering the Tri Nations on a bit of an up swing, plus there's the fact that the Springboks are hosting this one. Bryan Habana will be missed, but they have plenty of w...

Countdown To Destruction: Will The All Blacks Take It Easy On Canada?
2007-06-12 15:29:00
The All Blacks will host Canada this weekend in their final tune up prior to their Tri-Nations opener in South Africa. I figured that the #1 team in the world would rest many of their starters to avoid injury prior to game versus the Springboks. Let's face it, the Junior All Blacks could probably destroy Canada. But apparently that's not going to be the case. When asked about resting his starters, All Blacks assistant coach Wayne Smith said "You risk dropping your standards if do that. We're still working on specifics in our game. We'll probably take one or two things and really try to hone those this weekend."Bad news for Canada I suppose. Hats off to them though, because traveling to New Zealand to take on the #1 team in the world will be a nice learning experience for the players. I wish the U.S. were playing in New Zealand this year prior to the RWC. Look at USA soccer, for over 50 years they missed out playing in the World Cup and were getting owned by countries that I have...

Soccer: U.S. Looks To Finish Group Play Undefeated
2007-06-12 15:02:00
The United States takes on El Salvador tonight in their final Group B game. The U.S. have already secured a spot in the quarterfinals, but tonight they look to finish first in their group. They can take the top spot with either a win or a draw tonight. Winning the group would be huge for the Americans, because that would mean playing the 3rd place team from either Group A (Guadelope) or Group C (which is still pretty much up in the air at the moment) in the quarters. The U.S. holds a 14-1-3 record versus El Salvador all time. The U.S. got to this point in the tournament by defeating Guatemala 1-0 and Trinidad & Tobago 2-0 and enters the game with 6 points in the group. El Salvador defeated Trinidad & Tobago 2-1 and lost to Guatemala 1-0. They enter the contest with 3 points in the group. Right now the tournament is setting up quite nicely for the U.S., especially with Mexico already suffering a loss. The improvement of play between game 1 and game 2 is also very apparent. In the o...

Reuters: Jake White Under Investigation
2007-06-11 15:42:00
CAPE TOWN, June 11 (Reuters ) - The South African Rugby Union (SARU) have launched an internal investigation into the conduct of Springbok coach Jake White following an incident in a Johannesburg pub. White was involved in a late-night argument with a journalist over a newspaper's coverage of the Springbok season. The journalist was later assaulted by a third party, but claimed his argument with White had incited the attack. "Jake White is not being grilled as has been suggested, but we have launched an internal investigation," SARU manager of national teams Andy Marinos told reporters. "Our legal officer is speaking to all parties and once he has done his work, we will take a decision on what further course of action might be taken." White is in Cape Town preparing his side for the opening Tri-Nations match of the season against Australia on Saturday.*****My Take?- Unless Jake White pimp slapped this journalist, I would suggest this is a non-issue...

Springboks: Classens Called Up; Habana Out
2007-06-11 14:17:00
Springbok Head Coach Jake White has called up scrum half Michael Claassens for this Saturday's Tri-Nation match versus Australia, replacing the injured Rickie Januarie. Classens plays for the Cheetahs. Ruan Pienaar will get the start this Saturday.Januarie suffered a knee injury during South Africa 's victory over Samoa this past Saturday. This was a sizable blow the Springboks , as Januarie will be forced to missed the entire Tri-Nations series. He should recover in time for this September's Rugby World Cup.If that wasn't bad enough, Springbok star Bryan Habana will also miss the Tri-Nations with a knee injury. Habana was injured during their test match versus England after scoring two tries.

I woke up this morning around 8:00 am, all excited because I was going to watch the replay of the Argentina vs Italy rugby match from yesterday on Setanta Sports. I turn the channel to 615 and...it's New Zealand vs France ....FUUUUUUCK!I already watched that game! I was a bit pissed off because even the listings had Argentina vs Italy. So I'm going to check Setanta off and on today to see if they show the game later on at some point. I mean, I already know who won but it would still be nice to see what I missed since the game wasn't available live here in the States.

Update #2: South Africa Wins; Australia Is Next
2007-06-09 16:55:00
Are the Springboks ready for the Tri-Nations? South Africa continued their tune up for the Tri-Nations by defeating an outmatched but spirited Samoan side 35-8. Compared to the tests against England the previous 2 weekends, this match was actually pretty interesting to watch. Neither team was at full strength, yet, exciting action. After watching Samoa today, I will say this, the U.S. will be lucky to get out of Pool A with any points this September at the RWC. If I had to make a prediction right now, I would say the only chance for a victory for the Eagles would be against Tonga and even that may be pushing it. The only thing I can pray for is for the U.S. to at least play spirited Rugby so the casual U.S. fan might become interested. The Springboks will take on the Wallabies next Saturday in the Tri-Nations opener.
