The nominations were announced in France Football magazine and the name of the winner, decided by a panel of European journalists, will be unveiled on November 27. Of the 50 nominations, 17 are players from Barclays Premiership clubs, more than any other league. Champions Chelsea lead the pack, with John Terry, Frank Lampard, Joe Cole, Michael Ballack, Didier Drogba, Michael Essien, Claude Makelele, Arjen Robben and Andriy Shevchenko all shortlisted. Cesc Fabregas, William Gallas, Jens Lehmann and Thierry Henry represent last year's Champions League runners-up Arsenal, while Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney make up Manchester United's nominees.
