The LA Times reported that an anonymous source with access to the unedited version of the affidavit, let the newspaper view it, but didn't provide a copy. The Times said a second source who had identified the other players provided additional details about the document. The report named Miguel Tejada, Jay Gibbons, and Brian Roberts as users of ?anabolic steroids? and Clemens and Andy Pettitte as users of ?performance-enhancing drugs? according to Grimsley.2. The Villains of Baseball's Steroid Era
2006-10-14 21:09:00 This list Villa ins113 Playerscontains people whose actions havecontributed to the prevalence of steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs in Major League Base ball . Ironically, some will deter the use of steroids in the long run by having their stories made public, but to champion people whose motives are profit (Owners, Union, Canseco, Conte), reduced jail time (Conte, Valente, Grimsley) publicity or fame (Canseco, Conte) would be an injustice.MLB ExecutivesBud Selig and the Team OwnersSelig was the commissioner of baseball during the steroid era. While Selig has made progress in the eradication of steroids in baseball most of his actions have been reactionary. He was informed as early as 2000 by medical personel that steroids were rampant and a serious health issue for players and the fans that admire them. The exciting brand of baseball brought on by the steroid era was very profitable for the owners. Selig and Fehr were both grilled during Congressional Hearings into doping ... The Unsung Heroes of Baseball's Steroid Era
2006-10-10 22:06:00 These men Hero es 142 Playersare resposible for helping rid baseballof steroids and human growth hormone (hGH). Certain people such as Bud Selig and Jose Canseco have had a profound effect on the scnadal and will ultimately prevent countless players and children from using steroids and hGH. But since their actions have also contributed to countless instances of performance-enhancing drug use (selig with his complacency, Canseco directly and indirectly may be the worst of all) this column is loathe to consider either a hero.JournalistsThomas BoswellBoswell broke the silence about steroids in September 1988 in an interview with Charlie Rose. A reporter for The Washington Post, Boswell told Rose that Canseco, who was about to become the MVP and the first 40/40 ever, was "the most conspicuous example of a player who has made himself great with steroids." At the time, steroid accusations were virtually non-existent.Steve WilsteinWilstein was the reporter who discovered the bottle of Andost... More About: Baseball , Ball , The U

Suspicious Stats in Contract Years During Baseball's Steroid Era
2006-09-29 01:59:00 Currently, players are awarded arbitration after three years and free agency after six years of major league service time. Given the six year span under one team?s control, players are likely to be reaching their potential when their first shot at free agency comes around. There is an inherent likelihood that a player will perform better with years of experience while still maturing physically. It is a recipe for salary inflation as players tend to reach free agency while hitting their physical peak. Players are then paid more for what they have done rather than what they are projected to do.With that in mind, this article seeks to ignore players whose increase in production corresponds with their age and experience levels on a natural curve. It seeks to illustrate anomalous statistical achievements up to three seasons previous to signing a large contract, the season nearest to signing the contract given the most weight.Brady Anderson 50 HR in 1996, 18 HR in 1997Signed a 5-year $31... Suspected Steroid User: Darren Daulton
2006-08-29 06:47:00 Darren Daulton was the Philidelphia Phillies catcher for parts of fourteen seasons. He made three all-star teams, played in the 1993 World Series when the Phillies lost to the Toronto Blue Jays before winning one in 1997 with the Florida Marlins. This solid career nearly ended when it was just getting started due to some severe injuries. Most notably, a home-plate collision with Mike Heath in June 1986 tore up his left knee ending his season. When he returned from the disabled list he was unable to crouch as low as other catchers. The injury had inhibited his ability to play baseball. It seemed, at the time, as though that injury might have ruined/ended his career. When Daulton finally got regular playing time in 1989 his body didn’t hold up very well, hitting .201 and slugging .310. He didn't seem to be able to hit or catch.Darren Daulton - 1993In May 1991, good friend and Phillies leadoff man, Lenny Dykstra, was driving Daulton home late at night from teammate John Kruk's bach... The Earliest Accounts of Steroids and hGH in Baseball
2006-08-09 06:25:00 1971-1978 - Tom HouseHouse said that he used steroids during his eight-year Major League career, though he wasn't specific about which years. House estimated that "six or seven pitchers on every staff were fiddling with steroids or hGH" while he was playing.Tom House also says that steroids were rampant in the 1960's. This comment represents the earliest date that steroids were implicated in baseball. While this time-frame seems reasonable, House was still in the minor leagues at that time.1985 - Jose CansecoCanseco, in his book, Juiced, says he began using testosterone and Deca-Durabolin during workouts in 1985 while he was in Double-A. He experimented on himself with various combinations of drugs, and started using heavily in preparation for the 1986 season.1986 - Larry Starr & Pete RoseTrainer Larry Starr said a player asked his advice about whether or not to start taking steroids in 1986. Starr advised against it, but the player reported to spring training thirty pounds he... More About: Baseball , Steroids , Count , Ball , Arli
The Physics of Steroids in Baseball
2006-07-30 07:40:00 Robert K. Adair?s The Physics of Baseball covers everything in baseball from the trajectory of a curveball to batter reaction time to fundamental bat vibrations.Adair provides an equation relating bat speed to player weight:V = k sqrt(M/(m+M/81))Note: V is the velocity of the bat in miles per hour, m is the bat weight in pounds, M is the player's weight in pounds, sqrt means square root and k is a constant, 10, in mph.In an article on ESPN.com by Patrick Huber, entitled 616*(*No Asterisk Required), he relates Adair?s formula to Bonds.According to Adair's formula -- and don't worry, we asked him to double-check the calculations, since our last math class came in high school -- the 206-pound Bonds generates a bat speed of 67.34 mph, while the 228-pound Bonds swings the same 32-ounce bat at 68.81 mph, an increase of 1.48 mph.Hruby goes on to make the reasonable claim that while Bonds bat speed was increasing in his late thirties, it should have been decreasing.
