Choking People Unconscious - Submissions101
2008-05-12 21:01:00 I thought this was awesome: The Submissions101 guys decided to record people getting choked out from your average subs- the Rear Naked Choke, the Triangle. I guess it's a good video for beginners and people who have not choked anyone unconscious yet in their grappling training, as a reference in terms of "Hey, I have this locked in pretty tight, how many seconds before I should be extra-careful and watch closely how the other guy is doing?"Anatomy of the Chokeby Submissions101Remember, DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME- THESE GUYS KNOW WHAT THEY WERE DOING, AND THIS WAS UNDER CONTROLLED CIRCUMSTANCES.It seems like the correct answer to the question above is...5 seconds for medium=-strength3 seconds for high. Tito Ortiz vs. Wanderlei Silva (UFC)
2008-05-11 20:19:00 Old School Match - Tito Ortiz vs. Wanderlei Silva for what I believe was a vacant Light Heavyweight Championship title at UFC 25 in Japan.tito x wand hlby doctorcolosus7http://www.dailymotion.com/ video/x3m5x9_tito-x-wand-hl_sportA few notable things:Yes, for those unfamiliar with MMA before TUF, Wanderlei had 3 UFC bouts before becoming a PRIDE superstarI love how they traded near-KOs at the end of the first/beginning of the second.Tito's takedowns used to be superb- I'm actually really curious to see how he fares against Machida. I'm saying either Machida by 2nd round KO or Tito by decision (Lay and Pray... like this fight.)Nice attempt at a sweep there at the 6:34 mark by SilvaI keep telling people this, but Silva looks like a serial rapist. It's scary.
The Bicep Cutter (Bicep Slicer) from Armbar
2008-05-10 20:39:00 This is one of those techniques I'd avoid unless you're up against one of those freaks of nature whose grip strength seems to be impervious to any kind of leverage you apply on his arms. Not only because it's usually unnecessary, but because it can do tons of damage to a person's bicep or elbow joint with this thing. But every once in a while, you're either going to be really tired or up against a genetic freak of nature, so this is useful to have in your repertoire of submissions.http://www.youtube.com/v/AvZg i3ETdw0Here goes:You attempt the armbar from mount, and the guy defends with the vanilla response to it, by grabbing his hands together, palm to palm, and doesn't let go.Lets say that you're unfamiliar with the general ways to apply more leverage to the arm (grabbing higher up on the forearm, spreading your chest to apply more force than a normal grip can take). You take a forearm and slide it in between the opponent's forearm and bicep, make sure the forearm is vertical ... Bad choice to go with half-butterfly for Davis.THE BEST PART OF THE FIGHT:-Watch the fight and tell me that was not one of the slicke...
Shinya Aoki in Judo Competition + Aoki Standing Arm Break
2008-05-09 10:36:00 One of my favorite fighters in the world, Shinya 'Magic Pants' Aoki in Judo Competition http://www.youtube.com/v/8I4bV SP2ReMHis ability to pull of flying armbars left and right in high-level Judo competitions over the years just leaves me in awe. Aoki is just an absolute grappling badass....And because I got a request for it, here is Shinya Aoki vs Keith Wisniewski(Shooto Middleweight Bout)This was the fight in which Aoki snaps an arm in half from the clinch.http://www.youtube.com/v/Q_718dOW0 9kFrom both videos- you can tell he really likes the right side forward off-base position in the clinch, even in no-gi. Extremely offensive in grappling style, I absolutely love Aoki. Watch both videos! More About: Break , Standing
Minotauro Nogueira MMA BJJ Instructional
2008-05-08 21:59:00 Big Nog, Antonio Rodrigo 'Minotauro ' Nogueira , shows us, in this awesome instructional, some of his ground techniques for kicking ass in MMA.While the announcer speaks in Japanese, Minotauro speaks in English- don't worry. This instructional does a wonderful job of breaking everything down, showing multiple angles, and taking you step by step to realtime. Thank you, Mr. Nogueira.Video:http://video.google.com/go ogleplayer.swf?docid=6128720650855456750M y favorites here are...Tech #1 Omoplata Control to Footlock (The Mir Footlock)This was the technique that Frank Mir used to sub Tank Abbott a few years back- that was definitely awesome.Tech #2 Transition from #1 - Taking the Back from Omoplata Control to Rear Mount ArmbarThis is just so slick- the hardest part is how he ties up his opponent's hands and transitions over the head to get to a position to pull off the armbar. Also keep in mind how he bars his right leg over the opponent's hips to get his left over his opponent's head...
Fedor Emelianenko - Combat Sambo President's Cup 2008
2008-05-07 20:37:00 http://www.youtube.com/v/dn99HbjOTLAThis is essentially a "Let's break down a Sambo match a little bit so we can all learn from them" post.As usual, I copy/pasted my notes as I was watching this match:Some good knees by Fedor in the clinch. The important part: Check out Fedor's footwork- it's wide, but it's efficient. He's staying in the middle, controlling the center of the ring to make sure that the guy trying to circle around him cant.Check out near the 4:40 mark- Fedor uses his hips so well for the whizzer to mount transition. Also, despite the fact that he didn't pull it off, check out how he transitioned to the armbar. I see far too many people not being able to pull off the armbar from mount because they can't distribute their weight properly and end up getting thrown off. On the other hand, excellent job by the other guy defending it.I feel that Fedor starts to fall apart here a little bit.Excellent guard pull to reversal by the other guy at the 6:15 mark....Then AGAIN... Lyoto Machida vs. Rich Franklin (Inoki Bom-Ba-Ye 2003-Inoki Festival)
2008-05-07 03:08:00 Lyoto (Ryoto) "The Dragon" Machida vs. Rich "Ace" Franklin (Inoki Bom-Ba-Ye 2003-Inoki Festival )To all the people who say Lyoto Machida is a boring fighter- that's not true at all- he's just a very careful fighter. And when I say careful fighter, I mean careful as in a effective fighter, not Kalib Starnes "careful" (click here)Hate him all you like for being a Shotokan Karate posterboy (something I can understand, although it annoys me when people conveniently forget his BJJ and Sumo background.)As for good examples of Machida's striking ability, watch this (it ends with a knockout, I promise!) as well as his fight against Vernon White, where he keep catching White every time he throws a punch.I really can't wait for Machida vs. Ortiz coming up soon. Now, for absolutely no reason, here is the Stephen Colbert vs. Rain (Bi) dance off from last night's "Colbert Report"Online Videos by Veoh.com More About: Rich Franklin
Frank Mir vs. Brandon Vera (UFC 65)
2008-05-06 20:00:00 This was what I consider to be Frank Mir's worst performance to date- this was two years after his motorcycle incident, and he was looking completely out of his game.Frank Mir VS Brandon Vera http://www.tubearoo.com/articles/6840 3/UFC_Mir_vs_Vera.htmlTalk about a walking disaster- this is a good video in showing fighters how important training and fighting under the correct mindset is- Frank Mir honestly looked like a person who did not know how to fight in that performance. He looked like a guy in average shape who's won a few bar brawls, and thrown into a cage with a professional fighter. He honestly looked like he didn't know where he was.But look at him now, right? He gets eternal kudos from me for shutting up Brock Lesnar WWE fanboys at UFC 81. More About: Brandon Vera
Arm Drag from the Butterfly Guard
2008-05-05 21:44:00 Arm Drag From Butterfly Guard (Taking the back with the arm drag)This is definitely one of the best ways to take someone's back in grappling, as grappling Legend Marcelo Garcia often shows:(video)Steps:This does require a lot of explosiveness and technique, so drill it a lot.1) From Butterfly Guard, and while you and your opponent are working for position, you grab the opposite side wrist your hand2) As soon as that happens, shoot and post your leg that is on the side of the wrist that was just grabbed out away from your body. This is essentially creating a pin further away from your body, so that as you start to twist your opponent, that posted foot can react with enough force for the move to work against a resisting opponent.3) Then you shoot your free hand behind the triceps of the grabbed arm.4) Instantly pull his shoulder to your shoulder, and using the heel of the non-posted foot, you drive yourself up and around, now driving his shoulder into your chest. Reach around and sec...
George St. Pierre vs. Sean Sherk (UFC)
2008-05-05 09:37:00 George "Rush" St. Pierre vs. Sean "The Muscle Shark" SherkMuscle Shark x Rushby doctorcolosus7Why am I putting up this fight?Because I believe that BJ Penn has Sherk's number as long as he initiates the takedowns. Sherk is just like a more compact and weaker version of Matt Hughes, and as we know, Penn can hold his own against Hughes. Like most wrestlers, Sherk is definitely weakest on his back, and as this fight as well as the GSP vs. Matt Hughes fight shows, these incredibly talented and strong wrestlers as taken completely out of their element when someone beats them to the takedown.I'm not saying that Sherk holds no chance against Penn, because that is definitely not the case- Sherk is definitely one of the cardio beasts out there (insert steroid jokes here)- Will BJ's cardio be able to stand against Sherk's? Will BJ be able to take down Sherk/avoid Sherk's takedowns? Will "Baby Hughes" be able to land on top and stall out to a decision? Will BJ break Sherk's nose like GSP... The Neck Crank (Can Opener)
2008-05-04 23:51:00 Although I don't use this very often, the Can Opener (Basic Neck Crank ) is a very simple submission that can also be used as a very effective way to set up a guard pass.Video (Submissions 101)http://www.youtube.com/v/gXk_oJLVXAwS teps:-Your opponent has you in a very tight guard-You get your arms inside-With your elbows tight together, you grip behind his head and start to torque it towards you, cranking his neck-If he doesn't tap, more times than not, he will at least unhook his legs, which you can use to immediately go for a guard pass.Cautions:-This move is dangerous, so apply with care.-If you are going to use it, watch out for the armbar.(Note: I've just seen far too many grip break to arm-drag to armbar counters)-The easiest counter to this move is to post your hands into the sternum of the person using this on you and stiff-arming them while extending your legs.
Quentin 'Rampage' Jackson vs. Kazushi Sakuraba (Pride FC)
2008-05-04 03:11:00 Another one of my favorite fights, which made both Rampage and Sakuraba icons of MMA badassery in my mind:Quentin 'Rampage' Jackson vs. Kazushi Sakuraba(Pride FC)video:*Spoilers*"Badassery, you say?" -you might be asking- "...What does that even mean?"Badassery is when you slam your way out of a triangle, then an armbar.Badassery is when you nearly throw your opponent out of the damn ring.Badassery is when you survive the previous two examples of badassery and win the fight by choking out the guy who did those things to you. Attacking the Open Guard- Kneebar + Calf Crush
2008-05-03 19:57:00 This Sambo attack sequence is just plain awesome.Kneebar + Calf Crush (Remix Dojo)videohttp://www.youtube.com/v/ugddmI m_WRINow, they don't do a very good job of explaining this, but it's not too complicated-Steps- Attack with the kneebar by shooting your knee diagonally through your opponent's open guard.- With a good grip on the leg, use your semi-extended inside leg to hook under the knee of his opposite leg during the roll-through.- Throw your outside leg to catch on top of the foot of the leg you have hooked.- Lock your feet together, arch your hips, pull back, and extend your legs for a kneebar and calf crush combination that is really painful. What did I say? That move is just made of win. :)-y More About: Open , Guard

Kneebar Escape: Shrimping
2008-05-01 20:55:00 Here is the shrimp escape to the basic kneebar-Video:http://www.youtube.com/v/Yb JyK91vx3MBasically, since the point of the kneebar for the attacker is get your knee above his hips, intuition should tell you that getting the knee out quickly should be a good way to escape this crippling technique.Steps:-Before the kneebar is fully extended, post your hands on his hips/butt/leg- whatever you can firmly post on.-Shrimp out explosively, and create enough space for you to use your other leg to push against your opponent.Yes, it's a fairly simple technique- however, I cannot stress enough how important it is to respond immediately, because only the attacker has a death grip on your leg and locks in the kneebar, how incredibly difficult to escape.Happy Training-yPS-just because, here's my example of the kneebar (not the escape) at work:Frank Mir vs. Brock Lesnar UFC 81 More About: Escape , Sambo
Frank Shamrock vs. Phil Baroni Strikeforce + Full Analysis
2008-05-01 09:21:00 One of my favorite fights from last year, Frank Shamrock vs. Phil "The New York Badass" Baroni (video)http://www.youtube.com/v/e4QekTB6D Co&fmt=18Something I don't do very often for fight videos here on the blog- a round by round analysis of the fight:Round 1Baroni tried to end it quick, but Shamrock played it smart and avoided getting clipped hard, even showing a little flair with his head movement. Shamrock even nearly ended the fight there in the first with a punch that took Baroni's knees out from under him. Unfortunately for Shamrock, he decides to punch Baroni in the head, which get him stood up, with a point deducted.Baroni keeps at it, and takes Frank down, but takes some damage on the way. I have to say that sadly enough for Baroni, Shamrock actually out punched him from closed guard, which i find just hilarious. Don Richards- Step Over Guard Pass

Double Under Guard Pass Counter: Sweep or Taking the Back
2008-04-28 21:04:00 By Request: Counter ing the Double Under Guard Pass - Sweep or Taking the Back Video(revver)(Sweep)Essentially, as the person who is passing your pass begins to stack you and pass your guard, you create space just for a second by extending your hips, and with that space, you can feed your knee under the near arm of the opponent. After that, you control him by the wrist/elbow and by the belt (no-Gi/mma option: hook high up on the near leg. Scissor your legs, sweep.(Taking the Back)Against a really good opponent, he may try to just scramble his way around you.Maintain the grip on the wrist, roll towards him.Switch to grabbing the opponent's near foot, and now you're in a good position to attempt taking the back.
Life Lessons From Martial Arts
2008-04-28 05:07:00 Some little things that I've noticed that apply to both fighting and life for everybody:-Sometimes attacking is a great way to defend.-The more you pretend to know, the chance that any random Joe will mess with you decreases, but the chance that someone that knows what he or she is doing will call you out on your BS and wreck your shit grows exponentially.-Position before Submission. (BJJ mantra)-Being too stubborn to tap out when you should can stroke one's ego, but only indicates a lack of skill and maturity to everyone else watching. It also results in a lot of broken limbs.-Technique really is more important than strength, but anyone who uses that fact to justify a lack of strength probably doesn't have that great of technique, either.(similarly...)-Being much smaller or much, much larger really is a big disadvantage. Don't bitch, don't excuse yourself, figure out how to work around it.-Tradition is not an excuse for stupidity.-When imposing your will doesn't work against ... Eddie Bravo on Rubber Guard Theory
2008-04-25 16:41:00 I put this up because I found one of the lines to be very true: "You're not going to learn how to use the rubber guard in the middle of a fight!"video:It's pretty true, because, as even Eddie says in the video, people who knock the rubber guard or any other guard are the ones who have never given it more than a few days of practice, decide it's stupid, never practice it again, and when their fight or sparring match comes, they go "oh shit, my other guards aren't working, I better throw up the Rubber Guard ," just to have it fail miserably. He also points out something else that's useful: If it doesn't work for you, practice on a beginner first. That way, you know who can pull it off under resistance, and you can work your way up from there. So, main points?Don't knock something just because you can't use it, unless it has been shown that it can't work even when properly utilized.Use beginners as guinea pigs.Happy Training-y More About: Theory , Bravo
