Exclusive Interview With The American Sambo Association's President: Stephe
2008-04-23 20:44:00
Mr. Koepfer, aka, Sambo Steve, looking pensive, or recovering from a hard throw. Not sure. So, Mr. Koepfer, tell the readers- Who are you?My name is Stephen Koepfer. I am the president of the American Sambo Association and head coach for NY Combat Sambo and Team American Sambo.I've read your profile here on the US Sambo website: http://www.ussambo.com/pioneers.html you seem to be a big deal- head of the ASA, teaching for Militech New York, regular contributer to some of the most popular MMA publications in the world- What's it like being an instructor held in such high regard?Well, I am not that big a deal, I just have a loud mouth and have worked insanely to promote sambo. Along with that has come some personal recognition, but I am generally not that well known. Funny thing is that more people seem to know my screen name than my real name. I may have to legally change my name to sambosteve soon! I will attend some fight card for example, and total strangers will come up to me and ...

Pat Miletich: Escaping the Armbar
2008-04-21 20:27:00
Well, I thought this was appropriate in light of the Franklin vs. Lutter fight, where Franklin exhibited one of the finest armbar escapes in MMA history. Fight here: http://punchkickchoke.blogspot.com/2008/0 4/george-st-pierre-vs-matt-serra-rich.htm lHere is Pat Miletich demonstrating how to perform the full version of the armbar escape that Rich Franklin used to escape the also slick armbar attempt by Travis Lutter:http://www.youtube.com/v/jCfj69DEE nI1) As the attacker goes for the armbar, make sure that your hands are locked together in a wrestler's grip (palms together)2) While in the tug-of-war with your opponent, as he pulls really hard, throw out your arm, pinky up, to the far side of your opponent while throwing your near leg away, spinning out of the armbar.3) Continue the movement by posting the arm that was being attacked, and passing his legs for side-mount.

Erik Paulson: 1-2 Bait to Double Leg to GNP & Thai Kick Takedown
2008-04-19 22:42:00
Two great techniques here today in one video:Erik Paulson shows us two different techniques in MMA to take your opponent to the ground, on his back:http://www.youtube.com/v/VYtwzQO876Y Explanation of both techniques:The 1-2 Bait to Double LegWhen up against someone who has been boxing for a little while, if you hit him, he'll be conditioned to hit you right back after shelling up. This is to take advantage of that response:1) Hit him with a 1-2 (jab-cross) while he shells up and immediately take a 1/2 step back. This creates enough space for your follow-up takedown.2) As soon as he comes back with a combination of his own, most likely beginning with a quick jab, slip under (good time to employ the Crazy Monkey shell or the Elbow Destruction... if you don't what those are, search for them on this site below.) and double-leg your opponent.3) Knee-on-belly/Full mount at this point and start wailing away.Thai Kick Takedown Something I've seen Sanda (San Shou) guys use occasionally, act...
Attacking the Open Guard: Footlock
2008-04-18 17:15:00
Footlocks are definitely a BJJ noobie's worst nightmare- a quick-and-easy-move submission from the guy on top.Today video covers this favorite of no-Gi and Sambo fighters- Attacking the Open Guard with a Footlock:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a EwqVMrppIQThis move depends on the fact that when you are actively passing someone's guard, most will try to stick their legs close to you in an effort to control you or regain the guard. So what do yo do? Trap & Grab the closest leg and finish the sub.Happy training, and go slowly with this in training, as with all leg attacks.*footnote*I'll try to post tomorrow's fight as soon as I find them. Cheers, and good luck with all your bets :)

Position Before Submission: The Basic Tenets of Grappling
2008-04-16 18:55:00
This was a member post from cyrijl at Bullshido.net. I felt it was a wonderful read, had something to offer to any grappling practitioner. Please read, and take the advice to heart. For the original post:http://www.bullshido.net/forums/show thread.php?t=68631This past open mat I was thinking about all the things I say over and over again to new people just starting out. I thought I'd jot it down here. Most people understand position before submission but don't understand how to get to position. There are some basic tenets. While this is far from sticky level writing?it would be nice to have something like this for noobs to refer to. I find most of the problems new people run into come from these concepts rather than the specific movements of a certain technique. 1 - Breathe. If you can't roll for more than 2 minutes because you are spazzing out and afraid, you will never learn anything. If I can see the veins on your forehead throbbing, you are probably working too hard. This means...

The Guard for MMA - Breaking Posture and the Arm Triangle
2008-04-10 21:23:00
Notice: Once again, I will be returning on Tuesday, so don't unsubscribe just yet- take the time to read over the other 260+ posts I have written :)Anyway, a return to basics- defending yourself while in Guard Bottom for MMAhttp://www.youtube.com/v/nAGp2pXMieFir st Drill-Breaking Posture, Getting Hooks In:This is one of the most basic but overlooked portions of the MMA ground game- how to minimize damage from the closed guard-1) Opponent throws overhand from guard.2) Using your knees, you toss him forward while turning your body away from the punch, throwing his posture off.3) Swim your arms around opponent to achieve an overhook on the punching arm and head control with your other arm.Second Drill-Breaking Posture, Parrying Outside, Arm Triangle (, To Sweep):This is one of my favorite things to do, and just in terms of self defense, this has gotten me out of a lot of potentially bad situations before, because non-grapplers don't know how to prevent an arm triangle from getting lock...

Combat Sambo: Leg Kick Takedown to Grapevine Kneebar
2008-04-08 20:00:00
Here's a Combat Sambo move combination I thought was just made of win- the Leg Kick Takedown (Ouchi Gari) + the Grapevine Kneebar:http://www.youtube.com/v/UP_x7voL WeMThe takedown is a little awkward if you haven't done something like that before, but it's essentially a Judo inner leg sweep, just combined with the forward motion of a single-leg. You just really have to commit to it, and you'll get it.The kneebar, on the other hand, you need to finish immediately, else you will not be able to lock it in. You basically instantly triangle around his ankle, and arch your body to get the kneebar. Now, if you can't get it within the first 2 seconds, ditch it and work on moving to side/full mount. The kneebar is pretty low-percentage, but the takedown alone makes this move worth trying occasionally. Might I suggest covering up better than the guy in the video when shooting in?
Training Post: Neck and Body Conditioning for Martial Arts
2008-04-07 20:45:00
It's become apparent that many martial artists, surprisingly, don't give much thought to conditioning their bodies for fighting. So, for those of you that don't, pay attention:Those of you that study under kung fu 'masters' that urge you not to work out because you might lose your speed... stop listening to dumb advice. While it's true that being a completely steroid-ed beefcafe with massive amounts of unusable muscle will probably mean that you are slower than you could be, not working out altogether in combative arts is a terrible idea. Also, the 'don't work out' advice only works for people who spend enough time conditioning using MA training... which doesn't apply to most of the people who spew that crud from their mouths.Anyway, before I go into a huge rant about the things people in the TMA world buy into, here are 3 excellent bodyweight exercises:Neck Bridges: a fighter's best friend. While a strong neck may not save you from a locked-in RNC, having one might save ...

With five straight losses, he needs an impressive showing. Dolce, meanwhile, is a New Jersey fighter who finds pleasure in the fact that so many other guys are stressing about the fights. He seems thrilled to get in the cage.Coach Jackson offers some words of encouragement as the fight begins: "Don't go home."We are then introduced to a fairly annoying aspect of the fights: sporadic commentary from Griffin, Jackson and White. The fighters primarily drop in with corny jokes. White, meanwhile, shares his expert fight knowledge and explains to the world-class fighters what they're seeing and what's actually happening. Wrestling: Running the Pipe Finish of Single Leg Takedown
2008-04-01 21:06:00
Today, this technique shows you how to finish a single leg takedown on an opponent who maintains a good posture on you while you are trying to put him down. It's is essentially wrestling 101, and the move is called "Running the Pipe ."http://www.youtube.com/v/PqdoHogzpC sThe great part about this move is that it allows you to take full advantage of how the opponent might defend against a plain vanilla single leg takedown by splitting his leg apart to crumble his base.I'd explain it better, but this page from theMat.com does a great job with pictures:http://www.themat.com/CoachesCor ner/technique/RunthePipe/default.phphappy training-y

Joe Lauzon Interview - Yahoo Sports (3/30/08) MMA

Human Weapon MMA Episode: Jason Chambers vs Conor Huen
2008-03-31 20:41:00
A fight scene from one of the more entertaining episodes from "Human Weapon "- Jason Chambers vs. Conor Huen of the IFL. Why was this great? You get to see Jason pull a Twister. I bet Eddie Bravo had an orgasm watching this particular episode.http://www.youtube.com/v/JC66xuJZ 0gsYeah, this started from "watchable" and devolved into "craptastic." doesn't mean a few episodes weren't entertaining. The biggest difference between Human Weapon and Fight Quest is that the guys on Fight Quest will at least subtly let you know that they think a particular aspect of a martial art is silly, but on Human Weapon, they try to take everything face-value and seriously. Also, when they did the ninjitsu and kung fu episodes, those were really just plain embarrassing to watch. Plus, there's no Bill "American Muscle" Duff on FQ.

Frank Shamrock vs. Cung Le - Strikeforce 10by moltisanti87http://www.dailymotion.com/vi deo/x4w9i0_frank-shamrock-vs-cung-le-stri kefor_sportMy comments:-I hope your arm gets better Frank.-Cung Le needs to train more actual MMA to hit harder. I love Sanshou and all, but the fact that Le couldn't knock out Shamrock with solid strikes worries me a little. At this point, most UFC middleweights could probably run right over both Le and Shamrock.-Le did a good job tightening up his kicks after Round 1-Shamrock needs to take this more seriously at his age. He can be Mr. Showboat anymore.-Regardless of his inability to knock out Shamrock, Le definitely impressed me.Watch it!-y
