Watch Anderson Silva vs. Jeremy Horn (Gladiator FC 2004, Korea)
2008-03-28 19:43:00
A Fight video today:Anderson Silva vs. Jeremy HornGladiator FC 2004, Korea Jeremy Horn vs Anderson Silva - GFCby UrbanXMy Highlights (My comments while watching this.):Relatively good takedown defense by Silva (considering it's against Horn)......Until he gets picked up and dropped.Excellent GNP defense by Silva, ending up with him on top.Horn wastes no time, finds the hole from Half-Guard, escapes.Simple and effective Guard Pull by Silva. After stalling out, they start standing, and thus begins the general destruction of Horn by Silva... and that basically carries over to the next two rounds, Silva wins by Unanimous Decision, not surprising.

Bad Technique Habits in Martial Arts That Annoy the Hell Out of Me
2008-03-27 19:18:00
(Caption: Guy on the ight should get his fingers chopped off)Possibly a series I may continue, here are 4 Martial Art Technique Habits that Annoy Me:Crossing the Ankles while securing Rear MountYes, the guy who you're trying to sink a Rear Naked Choke into can apply an ankle lock on you just by putting a little pressure on your ankles. There's really nothing more embarrassing in grappling than submitting while you're in a much better position than your opponent, let alone Rear Mount.Interlocking the Fingers getting the Muay Thai ClinchTake a Hammer and just start breaking your own fingers one by one while you're at it. My God. And shame on the multiple Army guys I've seen doing/teaching this crap. Not squeezing forearms together after getting the Thai ClinchAnother Thai Clinch one: Just because you get that Thai Plum (yes, slang for the MT clinch), doesn't mean you get to be lazy. Squeeze that sucker's neck, right under the jaw line, so that he can't simply frame out and esca...

Royce Gracie vs. Akebono K-1 (2004)
2008-03-26 19:06:00
Hey, a Royce fight of this decade that wasn't too embarrassing for the aging Gracie -The reason I put this fight up is for two reasons:1) How he manged to get the fight on the ground without a takedown. When a guy is big, when he overcommits to a strike, it doesn't take much to make him fall. Notice at 1:13 how Royce uses his signature "I look like I have cerebral palsy" leg kick combined with dropping down and back to make the grossly overweight Akebono drop like a mishandled stack of cinder blocks into his guard (just tossing this in, but good use of the knee to block the punch near the end). You don't see non-low tolerance throws and takedowns all that often anymore, but so many people forget one of the major points of a throw during execution: unbalance your opponent, then help him fall. Granted, this was an extreme example, but it'll do just fine to illustrate my point.2) The Omoplata WristlockA less complicated manuever than the "Omoplatarmbar" I featured a little while back...

I'm a little short on time today, So I'm going to stick you guys with a little bit of flashiness. So, without further ado...THE FLYING ARMBAR from submissions101.http://www.youtube.com/v/7 6bEAM5MjrQThe biggest difference between BJJ and Judo guys with this move, as I see it, is that the Judo guy focuses heavily on making sure the opponent is flat on his back by the end of the technique, by throwing the leg over later, and using the inside leg with more force. Also, to finish, a flying submissions highlight...Enjoy!http://www.youtube.com/ v/6WWgmHAvsrs

Push Sweep From Guard
2008-03-23 22:20:00
One of the most basic of reversals, probably right after the scissors sweep, the push sweep relies on breaking down one side of the opponent, disrupting his center of balance. From Train Fight Win:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N3DgZB KQfaITo explain how this sweep works, imagine your average 4-legged chair (aka, legs, arms on a person). If you want to topple it over, ideally you want to pick a low fulcrum point and a point of force application far enough away so that you can create a large moment about that fulcrum point, more than the reaction from the 4 points of contact can muster. If you knock out one of those legs, the center of gravity becomes lower, and further away from the point of application, making it easier to use leverage to lift the other side up, effectively toppling the chair. Or person. Whatever.End of the lesson for today. Happy Training.-y

Dan Henderson vs. Renzo Gracie (Pride FC)
2008-03-22 23:22:00
I was just watching this and needed to put this up because I wanted people to see what really good sprawling looks like.http://www.spikedhumor.com/articles/ 124274/Dan-Henderson -vs-Renzo-Gracie .html Like I always do on this blog, I keep telling people who practice BJJ- roll with wrestlers. They may not know the submissions, but they will tear you a new one when it comes to takedowns and takedown defense. The "duck under and shoot" method tends not to work with guys who spend most of the time training how to not have their backs on the ground.Train with aliveness, Train with variety.-y

Effectively Closing the Distance to Clinch (Randy Couture)
2008-03-21 09:08:00
As per reader request of Chih Lin-He asked "How do you effectively close the distance on someone with a reach advantage?"Two years ago, this was exactly the problem I tried to solve by myself, and with that, started my path to learning about the clinch, and ultimately, the ground game. Now, I'm not short by any standards (5'11'') but it just so happens that fighting, especially MMA and Muay Thai, attracts a lot of, forgive my language, tall motherf@#$ers.The video that taught me how to close the distance the most effectively was this video by Randy Couture (important bits starts around 1:50):He calls it an Elbow Destruction, but it's one of the many techniques used in the school of thought I follow when it comes to closing the distance... I call it "Crash and Grab"At its very core, it works in two ways:DefensivelyBait opponent into attackingShell up, cover chin and foward side of head as he shows (For just Muay Thai, I'd use the Crazy Monkey Defense)Simultaneously slip punch a...

Inverted Triangle Instructional - Renzo Gracie
2008-03-19 17:14:00
alt link: http://revver.com/video/486921/renzo-grac ie-shows-the-inverted-triangle/This move is for when you cannot finish the triangle normally from the guard.Basically, you try to toss in the normal triangle, but when you find yourself not being able to lock it in because your opponent is trapping your outside leg, you can try to expose the other side of his neck, and switch the bite and the figure-4 of the legs.I roll with someone often who gets this all the time with a windmill sweep-> armbar-> triangle-> inverted triangle combination string of attacks.Happy Training-y

Choke - Rickson Gracie Documentary (Watch Here)
2008-03-18 17:08:00
Movie for you guys today:Choke Synopsis via Wikipedia:Released by Manga Entertainment in 1999, Choke, a 98 minute documentary by filmmaker Robert Goodman follows Rickson Gracie and 2 other fighters as they prepare and fight in Tokyo's Vale Tudo 1995, an early MMA event. The film is considered one of the great sports documentaries. The waterfall scene where Rickson submerges himself in a near-freezing river in the mountains of Japan in the middle of winter is a classic fight preparation scene. The No-Gi FLower (Pendulum) Sweep
2008-03-15 21:44:00
The grapplersguide.com brings us an instructional on the No-Gi Flower Sweep . Now, this sweep should be a part of any jiu jitsu practitioner's guard game already, but the truth is, it's really hard for most Gi BJJ guys to pull this off in No-Gi. Why? Because they tend to rely on Wrist Control to maintain the armdrag, because it's similar to the Gi control that they are used to. Unfortunately, without the Gi, wrist control is really weak, and often times this sweep will be blocked by the opponent pulling out and posting his arm out. This video, after demonstrating the wrist-control flower sweep that most people know, they do the more high-percentage-high-control body-lock variation of the sweep.Happy Training-y
The Omoplatarmbar From Rubber Guard (Aesopian.com)
2008-03-14 22:28:00
This particular technique combining the omoplata and the armbar comes courtesy of www.Aesopian.com, one of the best BJJ blogs out there. For the technique, click here:http://www.aesopian.com/25/omoplatar mbar-from-rubber-guard/Essentially, this beginnings of this move should seem pretty familiar with anyone who has seen or used the Rubber Guard . It starts out with the usual-Break Posture, Mission Control, Zombie, New York, Chill Dog... and that's when it starts to deviate from the normal Omoplata attempt from RG- After you stick your foot in your opponent's face to force the action, if he decides to try and post his free arm on your free leg to stall out the omoplata, you can pull that arm toward you and go for an armbar. And, of course, the best part about it is that if he defends the armbar, you still have the omoplata to fall back on almost immediately. So check out the move, and the rest of Aesopian's site-y
Flash Point - Donnie Yen Fight Scenes
2008-03-13 18:56:00
I was inspired to put these videos up after seeing a LA Times article on the upcoming stream of MMA films- the one that caught my eye was Donnie Yen's "Flash Point ," not because it had authentic and realistic MMA fight scenes, but because it showed that even Kung Fu film legend Donnie Yen believes that the wire-fu days are almost over, even in Chinese films (He actually said that, I'm not putting words into his mouth). I'm not going to lie, most of these fight scenes aren't much less exaggerated than the wire-fu ones, but it is interesting. I never thought I'd see the day with a Chinese action film having the main character using armbars, triangles, looping hooks, double legs, and suplexes. On a side note, who the hell runs around shooting with a sniper rifle? What is this, Counter-Strike? OMGHAX.The 8-minute Final Fight Shorter Fight Scene with Donnie Doing a SuplexThe TrailerI think I'm going to find this movie now and watch it.-y

Rickson Gracie Vs Masakatsu Funaki (Colosseum 2000)
2008-03-01 18:12:00
I stumbled on this classic Rickson Gracie fight, and decided that it was worth posting. Not because it was an awesome fight, or because "Rickson is the best ever." No, because I wanted to point out how much the game has changed since then.
