The Twister, aka, the Wrestler's Guillotine - Eddie Bravo's Signature Offen
2008-01-09 21:03:00 So, another post dealing with Eddie Bravo. The Twister- If you don't know what it is, and you've managed to stumble on this site looking for "Human Weapon" stuff, I refer you to the end of Jason Chamber's fight on the MMA episode. I find it kind of hard to believe that I didn't put this post up earlier. Now, before you continue on, I put up Eddie's book for download not too long ago: Download link for "Mastering the rubber Guard" hereHere, Submissions101 shows you the basic Twister from Side ControlIn this video, the creator of the move, Eddie "The Twister/Buttscoot/Rubber Guard" Bravo shows you a basic variation of the Twister, called the Hogtie.Key points of the Twister in picture form: http://www.bjj.com.au/eddie_bravo_twister .htmlGetting that Lockdown in and keeping it is probably the hardest part of the whole move, hence the two videos- first one is when the opponent makes a mistake and leans into you to get better position when under your side control, and the second one ... Countering the Stack While Applying the Triangle Choke - Sweep
2008-01-08 20:53:00 When I first tried the triangle choke on someone with barely any grappling experience at all, I was surprised to find that he immediately stacked on me. (For those with no idea of grappling terminology, stacking is basically standing up with the person on bottom still attached. Usually seen to break out of a triangle or the guard position.) Of course, I refused to let go...That was about the first time I hurt myself training. Now, unlike most other people who would go online or ask an instructor about how to get out of this position, I decided to figure it out on my own. As it turns out, I re-discovered the basic stacking counter everyone and their grandmother knows.Anyway, moving on from the cute story- god, I love Submissions101.-y More About: Choke , Triangle , The Triangle , Sweep
Just in the mood for a Couture fight- UFC 74 Couture vs. Gonzaga
2008-01-07 22:01:00 I saw that my old post with this fight was long-dead, so I thought I'd bring it back. Many a person's favorite fight of last year, Randy Couture vs. Gabriel Gonzaga :*sigh* I wish I knew what to think about Couture after his slightly controversial retirement. What FANTASTIC competition you're facing. #1 fighter in the world.*Party Poppers go off in background*Fedor Emelianenko vs. Hong-Man Choi - Yarennoka !Uploaded by moltisanti87Recap- (SpringHeeledJack, bullshido.net)Fedor immediately goes for a takedown. Choi falls down on top of him and holds him there for a few seconds, throwing a couple of punches in the meantime. Fedor gets a deep armbar from guard, but somehow Choi escapes. They stand up, and the same scenario is replayed again, only this time Choi taps to the armbar. Congratulations Fedor. You beat a Tumor-riddled, 1-0 freakshow fighter. That should prove to everybody that you're still the #1 fighter in the world. Whatever.-y More About: Fedor

The Margarida Guard Pass
2007-12-24 19:59:00 When you're up against a really strong guard, and if you're anything like me, you get really impatient. With that in mind, the Margarida Pass is perfect to break out of the guard of someone who is holding on to you for dear life. Now, unfortunately, I've only gotten this to work with a gi, but I'm working on a no-gi varient (if anyone can find one for me, that would be great).Anyway, here it is: The Magarida Standing Guard Pass (GrappleArts.com)Some key points to remember:While in the guard, keep a good, wide posture, with your toes on the ground (so you can hop on your feet)When rising, RISE. Don't "get up," RISE up like you're Jesus in a gi.This isn't a slam, but if you F-up, you can transition into one (if he doesn't sweep you first)Make sure your swing the first passing leg over the opponent's legs, don't step over.-y

What is my training philosophy?
2007-12-21 05:11:00 This is a post mainly for those who don't formally train, or are beginners:I'm sure everyone who comes across the blog must have, at least at one point (hopefully more), asked themselves: "Am I training right? Is my head in the right place?"Today, in this post, I will basically be repeating what I've always been saying in one, clean, simple post... So here goes:The Punch Kick Choke Guide to the Foundations of a Proper Training Philsophy1) You're not Bruce Lee/Rickson Gracie/Chuck Liddell/Muhammed Ali/(generic movie ninja)/Randy Couture/Jet Li/Chuck-F'ing-Norris. Get over it.Continuing Rule #1, strive to be better.2) Train with Aliveness. An overused term, but probably the most important thing here. Search for "Matt Thorton" on my blog if you have any questions.3) Pay attention to the details. Sloppy technique limits your growth as a fighter. You can only go so far on beating beginners with brute strength.4) Spar. A lot. Yes, full contact, you wuss.5) Watching action movies and ... More About: Philosophy , Raining
Jimmy Smith vs Jason Chambers (Fight Quest vs. Human Weapon)

Arm-drag Takedown to Armbar.
2007-12-08 18:59:00 In this video, they demonstrate a fairly easy arm-drag to clinch to achilles sweep takedown, and follow it up with an armbar (last part).Great instructional, though I would replace the defensive grip breaking to clinch with the offensive equivalent- aka, grab him first. Why? Try taking the back of a guy as soon as you start to make a counter-attacking movement. Significantly harder than you taking the offensive. Regardless, it's a wonderfully easy transition, and just as easy to practice. So get off your asses.-y More About: Drag , Takedown , Armbar

Best Damn Sports Show - Bas Rutten and Pat Militech
More articles from this author:2007-12-06 20:29:00 As stupid as it sounds, watch the last 1/3 of this clip- this is the 'Best Damn Sports ' interview with Bas and Pat plugging the IFL back in 2006, when Bas was still a coach for the LA team.I'm telling you to watch this, because they cover extremely basic movements in MMA, but in that simplicity, they also tell you what to expect from your opponent, and how to take advantage of it, whether it's using the thai clinch to set up a shoot, or how to use an opponent's defensive movements on the ground to pull an armbar. Now, anyone who spars often enough should know these things already, but as for those of you who don't, take the lessons you may learn from this and the rest of my blogging and apply it- I'll say it again- theory works... in theory. As a engineering student, here's the best analogy I've heard that you can relate to this: Physics is to Mathematics as Sex is to Masturbation.Translation: you're not going to be able to apply your theories/realize which of your theories...
