2008-05-13 03:37:00 This Just In...committed to bringing you a Walsh-free zone. When this paragraph ends, we promise we will not discuss, analyze, or bring up this whole Tape-gate fiasco. Belichick cheats. We get it. No one cares. That means everyone else does it, too. And, again, no one cares. This Walsh guy has done only one thing: reminded us of that vital life lesson...if you do something illegal on your boss's orders, save the evidence. You might just get famous (and acquitted). And while a tape of Eric Mangini flashing defensive signals isn't as exciting as, say, that infamous blue dress from the Gap, the lesson is still universal......The drafting of quarterbacks will present some interesting dilemmas to fantasy owners this season. Just how high will Tom Brady go? Would you take him in the first round? Many will. And if he's going to throw 50 TDs again, why not? Sure, defenses will play the Pats tougher, but can anything other than an injury slow down Brady?...And after Brady, then what? Mann...

2008-05-06 02:43:00 Welcome to TJI's Sports Week in Review (TJISWIR), your one-stop recap of all the important sports stories of the past week. Our emphasis here, of course, is fantasy football. But since we're basically an eternity away from draft day, we might as well rant on some other topics while we have the time......But football IS in the air, after all, with the draft just barely behind us and the first mini-camps wrapping up. Seeing the LT Sunday Conversation on Sportscenter yesterday got us thinking...Who's going #1 in your fantasy football draft this year?......Tomlinson is hurt. He should be okay for opening day, but can you trust in that? If you're drafting first, it has to be a stone-cold, dead-on lock. Does LT fit the bill coming off a knee injury? We'll say this, he certainly sounds like he's got a chip on his shoulder. The play-off game where he got hurt left him with a really bad taste in his mouth, especially with all the criticism he got afterwards. Was all that heat warranted... More About: Number

2008-04-29 04:36:00 Wow. What a draft. We live for this time of year. Things sure will be better next year now that we have this fine crop of young players ready to make an impact in this league......Now that we're done playing the part of Detroit Lions fan, we'll share our real insights and opinions. Let's preface our comments by saying we here at TJI watched exactly 0 minutes of draft coverage. We have, however, poured over (i.e. examined for about 3 minutes) the results and are now ready to comment......First of all, it looks like the Patriots had another stellar draft. How they get to cheat, lose a draft pick and still end up with awesome players, we just don't know......Best QB drafted? We won't find out in '08. Matt Ryan will be solid, but not this year. Rookie QB's just don't matter. And they are fantasy poison. We will be watching Chad Henne in Miami, though......And did anyone notice that Brian Brohm ended up in Green Bay? Staying in school might have cost Brohm millions, but if he had... More About: Sports , Review , Week

2008-04-22 02:31:00 Now that things have finally settled down at our new headquarters here in Mongolia (don't ask; all we can say is that when it comes to text messages, delete doesn't mean delete), we're able to get back into the swing of things. But what's a fantasy football site to do in the middle of spring? Focus on the upcoming draft? We'd rather be strapped to a chair and forced to watch all three seasons of Grey's Anatomy...back to back...with commentary by all those annoying, sniveling characters. There's such little drama that will occur on this year's draft day, and even less fantasy impact, that we just can't bear to delve into it. Why not wait until after it's over to break it all down? Why does it need to be crammed down our throats for three months? We take back that comment about Grey's Anatomy...we'll take 391 hours of McDreamy vs. McSteamy any day...just please someone tell Mel Kiper to shut up.Enough about that. Breaking Down the First Round
2008-03-22 14:50:00 Talk about two completely different days. Cinderella apparently had the day off Thursday. But she showed up Friday dressed in Versace and accompanied by a huge chip on her shoulder. Guess she was ticked about not being invited last year because she worked her way through the dance like a prom queen who didn't know the punch was spiked. And wasn't it fun to watch? Even if a couple arms of your brackets were obliterated (and they shouldn't be if you followed our advice), you have to admit it was fun to watch. Was there a better ending than the overtime thriller between Drake and Western Kentucky? Could you have been more shocked to see Siena, Villanova, and San Diego advance? Maybe you were someone that predicted all this madness. If so, let us know. We want to pick your brain. As for our picks, not too shabby, all things considered. None of our big boys were tossed. And we even called some of the shockers. Let's take a look...The GoodWe brought you the stunning upsets of the Midwest... More About: Breaking , Round
NCAA Tournament Breakdown: Final Four Picks
2008-03-20 11:53:00 If you've followed our coverage of the NCAA tournament (the first time we've ever done so, by the way) you've probably noticed that our regional champions include exactly zero shockers.Going in to the tourney, we viewed only 7 teams as having a real shot at the title. That's right, only 7: North Carolina, Tennessee, Kansas, Georgetown, Texas, Memphis, and UCLA. These 7 are so strong that we don't see anyone slipping by them from the lower seeds into the Final Four. Our Final Four picks were as follows:East: North CarolinaMidwest: GeorgetownSouth: TexasWest: UCLANo surprises there. And these four will provide some amazing games. We can't wait. Here's what will happen...National Semi-Finals PredictionsNorth Carolina over GeorgetownUCLA over TexasAnd finally...National Championship WinnerUCLAYes, the Bruins will cut down the nets. NCAA Tournament Breakdown: West Region
2008-03-20 11:31:00 Many experts say UCLA has the easiest path to the Final Four. We call this the "kiss of death." Whenever the talking heads start singing your praises, you don't have a chance, right? You're jinxed for sure.Well, that's usually the case. And if you follow our fantasy football coverage, you know there's nothing we love more than proving the experts wrong. But--and we know this might cause you to cancel your subscription to TJI--in this case, we have to agree.UCLA has all the components of a champion. They're battle-tested, have multiple scoring threats, and they're well coach. Last year's run will serve them well, as they won't be distracted by the spotlight. And the biggest change from this year to last--Freshman stud Kevin Love--will help them, too.And when you take a look at the other teams in the West , there just isn't anyone who stands out. UConn is streaky. Duke is under-sized. Xavier plays in the Atlantic-10. Drake is Drake. No one can hang with the Bruins. So here are ... More About: Tournament , Region

2008-03-19 13:11:00 John Calipari is going to want to give Dan Marino a call one of these days. No, not to sign up for Nutri-system or borrow some Isotoners. The call's going to need to be made so the two can chat about not being able to win it all. Every winter, we cheered for ol' Danny Boy to will his team to the title. But it never happened. And many-a-March in the 90's were spent cheering on Calipari's UMass teams. But they couldn't pull it off, either. Now John Calipary has a new home, the University of Memphis and yet another 30-win squad. But unfortunately it is not, once again, the year of the Tigers. And we've got two words that sum up the reason why: Conference USA. Memphis needs to get out of that conference and play some real teams. Otherwise, tourney time is going to be more of the same year in, year out.So, please, if you've picked Memphis to win it all, use this handy breakdown of the South Region to steer yourself back to the right path. NCAA Tournament Breakdown: Midwest Region
2008-03-19 04:23:00 Have you noticed that none of the "experts" are bringing you much in the way of upsets this year? Last year, with a tournament that was by our accounts light on Cinderella stories, has apparently made everyone a little gun-shy.But think about it. In years past, what has made the tourney so enjoyable? It's the upsets, baby. It's what's either ruined your bracket or made you the king/queen of the office, if only for a day after you picked Winthrop or Rider or Holy Cross on a whim.Well, we here at TJI think that when it comes to the Elite Eight and Final Four, the Cinderella stories will once again be sparse. But if there's a region where some drama might occur, it's the Midwest . Clemson and Vandy are a bit over-rated, as is chic upset pick USC, and Gonzaga is not the Gonzaga of old.And no one talks about the fact that Kansas, the region's number-one seed, hasn't beaten anyone all that impressive. Outside of their win over Texas in the Big 12 Championship, their resume doesn't ... More About: Tournament , Region
NCAA Tournament Preview: East Region
2008-03-18 05:09:00 The beasts of the East , UNC, must be ticked with the way things turned out. In order to make it to the Final Four in San Antonio, they might have to beat Louisville or Tennessee and/or Indiana and/or Notre Dame. That's not right. As the number one overall seed, they deserve an easier path to the Alamodome. But, as a consolation, their first four games would all be played in Carolina. A friendly crowd can be the difference maker in a tough game, so this is key.And while at first glance the other highly seeded teams in this region are tough, in actuality, they've each got issues: Louisville hasn't shown us any proof that they have what it takes to make a title run; Tennessee's zany and unpredictable coach might be their undoing; Indiana has the talent, but the upheaval is going to be too much to overcome. Only once in recent memory, Michigan in 1989, has a team in such turmoil been able to succeed in the tourney. And Notre Dame, a chic sleeper pick in the East, well, is Notre Dame ... It's NCAA Tournament Time!!!
2008-03-17 21:32:00 Well, after being chased out of yet another country, TJI is back, baby! And we're ready to rumble. If there's one thing our editors love more than fantasy football and the Dharma Initiative, it's gambling. And nothing provides more sports betting pleasure than the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament .So our return to glory won't be through NFL Draft Analysis. (Frankly, we find that as fun as a soggy piece of toast. We'll leave it to Mel Kiper. What is with his hair, by the way? It's time for a new look, boy-o.)Instead, we offer up a break down of the NCAA Tournament field. And just like our fantasy football coverage, our analysis will be spot-on. Three-Point Stance: Start or Sit? Week Six
2007-10-13 05:01:00 Last week saw us making some fairly sound picks, but we've still yet to hit our stride. Stick with us, dear readers, and you'll see TJI blossom into a juggernaut of prediction and prognostication.Actually, relatively speaking, we're not doing too shabby. We checked out CBS Sportsline's Start 'em or Sit 'em column from Week 5 and for a fantasy sports powerhouse, they leave a lot to be desired. Their start of the week was Brett Favre, who put up sub-par numbers. They also recommended starts for stinkers Jon Kitna, Vince Young, Drew Brees, and Brandon Marshall, and advised sits on several top players of the week including Cedric Benson, Philip Rivers, Vincent Jackson, and Randy McMichael.Makes us feel a lot better...on to this week's tipsQB to StartEli Manning @ Falcons--With one Manning off this week, the other steps it up.Brian Griese vs. Vikings--He'll exploit a poor pass defense.Kurt Warner vs. Carolina--Another poor defense set to get lit up by another retread.QB to SitBre... But our track record has been fairly good this season. Where else could you get a recommendation to start Daunte Culpepper last week? To anyone that listened?you?re welcome. On the Rise (Again)...Selvin Young
2007-10-05 04:27:00 This Just In Fantasy Sports has learned that Travis Henry has tested positive for marijuana. Ain't that a kick in the bong? What exactly is the impact of this run-in with the law? It means that Henry might possibly face a suspension of one year from the NFL. This suspension could possibly begin immediately, from what we understand.Details of the matter are still sketchy, but we will monitor it closely for you.In the meantime, all owners of Travis Henry and anyone in need of RB help, you should add Selvi n Young immediately.Very rarely do we jump the gun on this type of pick-up, but the ramifications of this could help you to turn your season around. Henry hadn't exactly been lighting up the league (although apparently he's been lighting up something else). Instead, he's pretty much been killing every owner that wasted a top 20 pick on him. Now's your chance for a fantasy 180. Good luck to you. More About: Rise , Selvin Young
From the Mailroom: Derrick Ward or Brandon Jacobs?
2007-10-04 23:13:00 Lots of mail this week...let's take a look at two letters that might help our readers most:Al writes...Due to byes and injuries, I have to start a Giants RB. Which one should I start, Jacob s or Ward ?Well, Al, that's one of the tougher calls of the week. All reports out of New Jersey are that Jacobs is ready to go this week. However, it looks like there'll be a 50-50 split for now. So should you trust that BJ is OK? Or will Ward continue to rack up solid numbers? Surely, someone has to emerge, but this week it looks like a toss up. We say give Jacobs the nod. He'll get the goalline carries, so we say use that fact to break the tie between the two.Andy from St. Paul, MN asks: Which two WR? Smith, Colston, Chambers, Holmes, or Edwards?Even though, he puts up the occasional goose egg, you cannot bench Steve Smith. We also feel that Braylon Edwards has earned un-benchable status, as well. The Browns will play from behind this weekend, and Derek Anderson and Edwards should hook up for... More About: Brandon Jacobs
Injury Insight: DEFCON Five
2007-10-03 11:48:00 A month ago, you thought you were pretty slick when you drafted Steven Jackson in the first round. You just knew he was going to bust out. And then when you grabbed Marc Bulger later in your draft, you were certain you had a dynamite 1-2 punch that would guarantee you'd blow out the competition week after week.Well, we hate to be the ones to tell you something you already know, but your ship is sinking. Don't worry, though, so is the ship of thousands of fantasy owners across the nation. The list of running back injuries reads like the first two rounds of a fantasy experts' mock draft:Steven Jackson, Brian Westbrook, Joseph Addai, Travis Henry, LaMont Jordan, Marvin Harrison, Laurence Maroney, Rudi Johnson, Deuce McAllister, Cadillac Williams, Brandon Jacobs...this is getting ridiculous. Three-Point Stance: Start or Sit? Week Four
2007-09-28 12:58:00 We had to take a few days off. We admit it?we cracked under the pressure. And after three sub-par weeks in the picks and prognostications department, we here at This Just In Fantasy Sports decided it was time for some changes. So, we basically pink slipped everyone who had a hand in the mediocre ?Three Point Stance? columns of the past. We?re not sure if the straw that broke the camel?s back was labeling Deuce McAllister and Drew Brees ?STARTs? last week or telling you to ?SIT? From the Mailroom (Again): QB Quandaries
2007-09-21 12:53:00 So many people wrote in this week, we had to split it into two installments. Keep those emails coming!Eyal wants to know: Vince Young or Delhomme? I also have McNabb. You've got three pretty decent QB's there, Eyal. We'd go with Delhomme. He and Steve Smith are really clicking this season. And we think you need to ride that train until it stops.-----Brandon writes: Brees or Pennington at QB? Also, Vikings or Bears for Defense?Yes, Brees is off to a rough start. But we believe the Saints will figure things out this week. He'll hand the ball off a lot more to Deuce McAllister, which should open up the passing game. We'll take Brees almost any day over Pennington.Man, you have two tough D's. Gotta go with the matchup here and the Vikings have a better one versus the Chiefs. 2007-09-21 03:20:00 Lots of emails. And lots of questions about Larry Johnson. Let's get to it...Newly hooked reader Al writes: My RB: D Ward, L Jordan, L Johnson, and L White. My WR: Chad Johnson, R Moss, and P Burress. I need 2 RB, 2 WR, and one flex (WR/RB). Who should I start? This is quite a tough decision on the WR side. It?s extremely tough to sit Larry Johnson, in our opinion. He?s capable of going off, no matter what D he?s matched up against. You should also ride a red-hot LaMont Jordan. Finally, we normally advocate starting a RB in all RB/WR flex spots, but the three WR you have are quite a trio. With so many question marks surrounding White and the unproven track record of Ward, we?d go with your WRs. Just be sure to monitor Burress and his injury status before game time. 2007-09-19 05:14:00 Some random thoughts about the weekend's NFL action......This just in: the editors at This Just In Fantasy Sports have fired everyone who had a hand in our Dollars to Donuts NFL picks for last week. It's almost like they were trying to pick the wrong teams. This week, special guest Tim Donaghy will be making the picks for us......The Saints are marching out of the upper ranks of NFL teams. We just can't believe that they can be that bad. We do think Brees will rebound. Bush we're a little worried about. The man to target in a trade might be Deuce McAllister. They're going to get him more involved in the offense...Anyone who predicted that LaMont Jordan would return to form this season is looking pretty smart right about now. Is he this year's Frank Gore? 2007-09-15 13:02:00 The mailroom is full once again with readers' questions about Week 2. So lets get right to it...Charles, from Houston writes: With last week's outburst, is Ben Roethlisberger an every week start?Let's remember who the Steelers played last week. The Browns defense is porous, at best. QB's are going to light them up all season long. So with Big Ben, that must be taken into account. We do believe he will have a good season, but he's going to have to prove himself against tougher opponents before we pencil him into the "must start" column. If your other QB is Matt Schaub or Rex Grossman or Jason Campbell, then you should roll with Ben this week versus the Bills. Otherwise, he should be reserved.Stacey from New York City writes: Did I make a mistake by drafting Philip Rivers? We know it looks like it now, but don't give up on Rivers. 2007-09-14 03:55:00 First things first. We need to reflect on what was an abyssmal week for our team of prognosticators. Our Start /Sit recommendations produced mixed results, but, hey it was our first one ever, cut us a break, okay? Here were our hit starters: LaMont Jordan, Adrian Peterson, Tony Romo, Ben Roethlisberger & Andre Johnson. 5 for 9. Not great, but the 5 were pretty big hits. And the sit-list hits: Vince Young, LenDale White, Brandon Jackson, Lee Evans, & Braylon Edwards. Again 5 for 9. We've gotta do better. And there were a few misses that we have to own up to, such as recommending that you bench Plaxico Burress and that you start Reggie Brown & Jerry Porter. Sorry about that. 2007-09-13 01:44:00 Each week TJI provides you with free agent tips in this new feature, "Free Agent Frenzy ." We know your team needs just a little tweaking. We can help give you the edge for your upcoming matchup.Go Get 'Em...Ronald Curry--He's obviously going to be Oakland's go-to guy. They'll be playing from behind every week, so that helps, too. Not a good play this week against Denver, but could be a breakout player.Chris Brown --If he's still in your free agent pool, you're in a league of idiots.
