Power Rankings: Sox Back To #1, Mets #4
2007-09-15 05:01:00
At ESPN.COM, the Red Sox have taken over the #1 spot in the MLB Power Rankings.  The Mets also moved up 2 spots to #4.  The Yanks round off the top 5, remaining in the 5th spot. #1#2#3#4#5 Finally, as they should be the Sox are back in the #1 spot.  Cleveland is in the #2 spot.  They have played so well of late, that it may end up that the Yanks will play Cleveland instead.  Personally I definately rather face the Indians first round and have the Yanks play LAA, who they always lose to.  But Clevelands making a push for 2nd best record, meaning Sox would have to face LAA.  I really hope Angels hold em off for 2nd best record. Mets deserve to be considered the best NL team.  They are and hopefully this time around they'll actually win the pennant.

Reyes Could Eventually Steal 100
2007-09-11 21:43:00
Jose Reyes is regarded by many as the most exciting player in the game.  Reyes's most exciting attribute-his ability to run.  Reyes currently leads baseball with 75 SB and he's on pace to finish with 85.  In an article for ESPN.COM, Enrique Rojas writes that Reyes will eventually follow Coach Rickey Henderson's footsteps and steal 100 SB in a season. It's an interesting and exciting possibility.  I rather see Reyes hit 20 HR get more doubles, triples, and walks and continue to raise his OBP more than see his SB rise.  But if his OBP continues to increase, so should his SB.  I do believe he can steal 100 in the future.  It should be very exciting to watch him in the future and I hope he can get to at least 80 SB this year.

Mets Greatest HR: Mike Piazza September 2001
2007-09-08 02:17:00
After about a month of voting, a winner of the greatest Met HR has been determined.  Mike Piazza's Sept ember 21, 2001 HR to help give the Mets a 3-2 win over the Atlanta Braves in the first home game since 9/11 is your Mets Greatest HR of All-Time, receiving 32% of all your votes.  Here are all the other nominees in order of finish: 2. Robin Ventura Grand Slam Single 1999 NLCS (20%) 3. Todd Pratt Walk Off HR 1999 NLDS (15%) 4. Lenny Dykstra Lead Off HR 1986 World Series (12 %) T-5. Ray Knight HR Game 7 1986 World Series (10%) T-5. Benny Agbayani HR 1999 NLDS (10%) Thanks a lot to all of you who voted.  In my opinion, I would've went with Todd Pratt's shot, because it was the only HR that actually ended a series in Mets history.  However, I will never forget Piazza's HR.  It was an unbelievable night and Piazza's shot brought everyone to their feet.  It made me feel like the Mets actually had a shot in the NL East and it was so great to see the...

Power Rankings: Sox Drop Again to #3, Mets Up 3 to #6
2007-09-08 00:20:00
In the latest ESPN Power Ratings, the Angels remain on top for the 2nd straight week.  The Indians move ahead of the Sox into the #2 spot.  The AL Wild Card leading Yanks remain at #5.  The Mets come in at #6, the 2nd best team in the NL, behind the padres. For the complete Power Rankings through September 6, click HERE #1#2#3#4#5 These ratings are awful and make no sense.  First of all, the Red Sox should still be #1.  Sure, I'm bias, but I'm sorry can anyone remind me who still has the best record in all of baseball.  O, yea its the Sawx.  The Angels are 1.5 games behind the Sox best record.  The Angels dont bother me as much as the Indians do.  I don't care how hot they are...they are far from better than the Sox.  Are you kidding me ESPN?  The Indians have been mediocre for months and are finally on a winning streak.  These 2 will probably meet in the first round and the Sox will beat the crap out of them.  ...

Wright Making Big Push for NL MVP; Ortiz for AL MVP?
2007-09-04 20:06:00
Over the last few weeks, it has been clear that Mets 3B David Wright is making a serious case for NL MVP.  After his disastrous April, Wright has been one of the best players in baseball and is on pace to have a 30/30 season. In an article for ESPN.COM, Jayson Stark announced his leading candidates for AL and NL MVP.  Wright is among the NL favorites, along with a few Phillies.  Although it's been a somewhat disappointing season, David Ortiz is a candidate for AL MVP. I don't know if Wright has enough to win NL MVP, but he gets my vote.  Even through the tough series this year, such as the Philadelphia one, Wright has been excellent.  The home runs are coming and so are plenty of RBI.  His speed makes him a full threat in the middle of an inconsistent Mets lineup.  He's been the most consistent hitter in that lineup, especially after his tough April.  I don't really think Ortiz is a serious candidate for AL MVP, but it's nice to see hi...

Weekend Recap: Buchholz No-No, Mets Sweep Braves
2007-09-03 03:30:00
As all of you know, Boston Red Sox rookie SP Clay Buchholz through a no-hitter yesterday against the Baltimore Orioles in just his 2nd major league start.  Watching it, I was absolutely amazed and was thrilled.  Coming into the game, the Sox needed a big start from a guy who 2 days ago wasn't supposed to start.  Wakefield's injury helped lead to one of the most magical moments in Red Sox history.  Coming off 4 straight losses, Clay took the mound knowing that the Yanks had already won and it was about time the Sox snapped a tough losing streak.  Then, he went out and pitched brilliantly.  With some help from a great defense, mainly Pedroia's great play, Clay made history.  It was great to watch and I was thrilled for the young kid.  With an excellent changeup, a solid fastball, and a devistating 12-6 curveball, Clay is set for an excellent big league career and I can't wait to watch him join Beckett and Dice-K next year.  The Sox went...

Back From Philadelphia (And Other Info)
2007-09-02 02:38:00
Hello All.  I recently returned back from my trip to Philadelphia , which included me going to Tuesday's Phillies-Mets game.  First of all, if you haven't been to Citizens Bank Ball Park, then you are missing out on a great experience.  The stadium is beautiful and 1000 times better than Shea.  First of all, you can enter the stadium at 4:35 PM before any ball game at 7 ET.  You can walk around the amazing ballpark and eat in some great restaurants before the game.  Then, batting practice happens in which you can watch it from pretty much anywhere.  I arrived at the park at about 5:15 and the Mets were out shortly after.  Many Mets were hanging around in Left Field, as their teammates hit.  Mota, Heilman, Wright, Anderson, Feliciano, Sosa, Alou, and Wagner were among the many there.  The only one who said hello to me when called, happened to be Rubin Gotay.  He was very kind, as he was the only one to actually throw balls...

Lugo,Lastings Rebounding After Slow Start
2007-08-23 02:58:00
At ESPN.COM, Jerry Crasnick gives his latest edition of Start ing 9. Crasnick lists the top 9 players who have come to life after very slow starts.  Red Sox SS Julio Lugo is on the list at #7.  Mets OF Lastings Milledge comes in at #9.  Meanwhile, Phillies OF Pat Burrel comes in at #1.  Yankees OF Bobby Abreu is on at #4. Lugo has really improved over the course of the season.  While his struggles in the field continue, his offense has improved a whole lot.  He was once struggling to hit .190.  Now he's keeping his average around .240.  That is far from great, but he's been a lot more productive of late.  Lugo has overall been more productive than Drew, but has suffered more heat.  Hopefully, Lugo continues to produce.  Before this season and through a part of it, I thought Milledge would be traded.  His rap album info came out in May and he then got injured.  Gomez proved he can play in the bigs and it was apparen...

Third Times A...Are You Freakin' Kidding Me????????
2007-08-18 05:19:00
So let's think back to the trade deadline.  Time is about to expire.  The big question is if the Sox will do anything to improve their team.  Then the news comes in that the Sox beat out the Yanks and acquired Eric Gagne!  Great, so one of the best bullpen guys available is added to the team that already had the best in baseball.  Excellent!  World Series here we come!  Yanks, hah your done!  WOOO!!! O wait, there's one problem: He hasn't pitched yet!  Unfortunately, that has turned out to be a HUGE problem. Gagne blew another game Friday Night against LAA.  He entered the inning up a run and left down 2.  This was the same game in which the Sox trailed 4-1 entering the 8th and made a great comeback to take a 5-4 lead into the 9th.  Ortiz and Manny finally had huge clutch hits.  Fenway was going crazy!  And then, it all crashed thanks to the new guy.  Gagne was terrible again...and I mean terrible.&nb...

Steve Phillips Is Wrong Again
2007-08-17 03:38:00
Former Mets GM Steve Phillips continues to offer his unbelievable analysis for ESPN.  What does that mean?  It means more stupid things will fly out of his mouth.  His latest stupid remark will not make any NY fan happy at all. Steve Phillips has repeatedly said that both the Mets and Yanks will miss the postseason this year.  This is coming from a guy who said in the beginning of the year that the Red Sox AND Mets would finish in 3rd place in their respective divisions.  Steve Phillips has a better chance of being hired again as a GM than being right about that one or this new one.  The chances that the Mets and Yanks both miss the playoffs are not very good.  The Mets have been the division leaders for almost everyday this summer.  And with how hot the Yanks are of late, I'd expect the yankee-lover to predict that they would make the playoffs.  I guess with his latest prediction, he has admitted he was wrong on this bold pre-season pr...

Red Sox Fail to Sweep D-Rays
2007-08-16 03:12:00
The Red Sox took 2 out of 3 from the Devil Rays at Fenway Park these last 3 days.  The Sox are 7-2 against Tampa Bay this year.  The Sox offense struggled all series but they were able to come up with a couple of big wins and overall increased their lead to 5 games. Game 1: Sox win 3-0.  Wakefield was brilliant, the offense not so much, but they got it done. Game 2: Sox win 2-1.  What a game this was.  Sox looked like they'd lose a 1-0 game to the D-rays before the bats came alive after the 25th out was recorded.  Clutch HR by Lowell and huge hits by Varitek and Crisp.  The Sox record improved to 2-61 after trailing after 8 innings (currently 2-62 after game 3)  Eric Gagne got the win in relief. Game 3: Sox Lose 6-5.  D-Rays dominated the Sox for the majority of the game.  Dice-K did not have it at all for some reason, giving up all 6 runs.  Wakefield and Lester shut them down, but Dice-K couldn't.  That doesn't make sen...

Dontrelle Willis May Be Shopped Come Winter
2007-08-13 23:55:00
According to the Miami Herald, the Marlins may shop D-Train in the offseason instead of paying him at least $7 million in arbitration.  There has been rumors for a long time that the Marlins may eventually trade this guy.  However, the Marlins have also said they want to build the team around him and Miguel Cabrera.  There are plenty of young stars in their system that they will have to pay, like SS Hanley Ramirez.  Willis has stuggled at times of late, so this may be the time to trade him.  The Marlins will probably want pitching, a lot of pitching, in return. For more rumors visit FOXSPORTS Any time D-Train's name comes up, the Mets are involved.  I would love to see him in a Met uniform, despite his recent troubles.  The Mets have many old pitchers and Pelfrey has struggled.  Willis's energy would be great for this team and he'd be so exciting to watch at Shea.  If the Mets can get a deal done, they should.  Go get em, Oma...

TV Note: Glavine's 300th Win on SNY Tomorrow
2007-08-13 02:27:00
It appears SNY has picked up Tom Glavine's 300th victory against the Cubs from ESPN and will show the game as a "mets classic."  The game aired a week ago today, under the brilliant commentating of Jon Miller and Joe Morgan.  The classic will air tomorrow night at 7 ET on SNY.  A half-hour before that, SNY will televise "Tom Glavine: Road to 300".  Enjoy!

Should Gagne Be the 7th Inning Guy?
2007-08-12 03:42:00
Last night, Eric Gagne entered the 8th inning trying to preserve a 5-1 Red Sox lead over the Orioles.  Then, the game fell apart.  Gagne gave up 4 ER in 1/3 IP and blew the game. The bottomline is without Gagne, the Sox would've easily won yesterdays game, using the combo of Okajima and Papelbon. Gagne has had only 4 appearances for BOS.  In 3 of them he's given up at least a run.  He's given up a total of 6 ER in those 4 appearances....not good.  Before he came to the Sox, Gagne's ERA was 2.16.  The ERA has shot up since then to 3.44!  So the question is should the Sox consider putting Okajima back in the 8th inning and push Gagne back to the 7th at least for now?    The one and only bad thing about bringing Gagne here was that it messed up the perfect 2007 combination of Okajima and Papelbon in the 8th and the 9th.  It's kind of unfair to push Okajima and his near 1 ERA back to the 7th after such a successfu...

Power Rankings: Sox Remain #1, Mets Stay #3
2007-08-11 02:13:00
In the latest ESPN MLB Power Ratings, the Red Sox remain at #1, while the Mets remain at #3.  In fact, the top 4 is exactly the same as last week, with the Indians rounding off the top 5. #1#2#3#4#5 To view the complete rankings through August 9, click HERE The rankings make sense, but I still believe the Indians and Tigers are much better teams...throw the Mariners into that discussion.  Sox dropped 2/3 to the Angels but they remain on top of them, probably because their record is 2.5 games better.

Sox: Is It Time To Panic?
2007-08-09 02:23:00
The Yanks are now only 5 GB of the Red Sox for 1st in the AL East.  As a Sox fan, I am beginning to feel a little concerned.  But is it time to panic and watch a, as one Yankee fan yelled today, "collapse, collapse, collapse"?  Here are the reasons why and why not you should panic as a Red Sox fan.         ;  WHY PANIC: The Sox had a ridiculous 14.5 game lead in May, a 12 game lead 2 days before the all-star break, a 10 game lead at the all-star break, and a 9 game lead last week!  The Yanks have picked up a total of 9.5 games since May and have picked up 4 games in a week.  The Yanks have the best record in baseball since June and since the all-star break.  They have been red hot and they can't stop hitting as their offensive outburst has been ridiculous.  Based on the numbers, the Yanks are the best offensive team in baseball.  The Yanks have also pitched well and have gotten back rookie phenom Phil Hu...

Piazza to the Twins???
2007-08-08 01:26:00
Over the last few days, there has been a big rumor circulating throughout baseball that through waivers Mike Piazza may be traded.  The most likely destination for Piazza may be the Minnesota Twins .  The Twins, who like the rest of the AL Central, didn't do anything to improve at the trade deadline, may be looking for a waiver trade before the end of August.  However, according to FOX Sports, Piazza only wants to play on either coast and the A's may not trade Piazza against his will.  Twins insiders continue to say that Piazza would probably not accept a deal there.  So, as of now it may look like the Twins is an unlikely destination, but don't rule out Piazza being traded somewhere else.

Top 3 Mets Home Runs of All-Time
2007-08-06 05:05:00
ESPN's Baseball Tonight started counting down the top 3 home runs from every Major League Team this Sunday.  The first team:  The New York Mets Here are their top 3 Met Home Runs of All-Time as decided by ESPN. 3. Mike Piazza's September 21, 2001 Home Run to give Mets 3-2 lead over Braves.  It was the first game after 9/11 and the Mets would hold on for the exciting victory. 2. Ray Knight's 1986 World Series Game 7 Home Run to give the Mets the lead against the Red Sox.  They would not give that lead up and held on for the championship. 1.Todd Pratt's walkoff homer in the 10th inning of the 1999 Division Series to defeat the Arizona Diamondbacks in game 4 and send the Mets to the NLCS.  I'm really interested to see what other people think about this.  Personally, I think there were some other great home runs throughout the Mets history that could've made the list.  But these 3 shots were definately huge.  It's so grea...

Power Rankings: Sox Remain #1, Mets #3
2007-08-03 22:44:00
In the latest ESPN Power Rankings, the Sox remain in the #1 spot.  The sox 66-42 record is still the best in baseball.  The Angels follow the Sox and then come the Mets ...yes the Mets are 3rd.  The Mets 61-47 mark is good for the 3rd best record in baseball and the best in the National League.  The Yanks keep moving up, this time all the way to #4.  The Cubs fill out the top 5 and the Brewers dropped all the way to #17. #1#2#3#4#5 To view the complete list through August 2, click HERE Again as usual the Sox deserve the #1 spot and with the addition of Gagne the Sox are the ML team to beat...world series here we come!!!  Then again it should be an interesting challenge this week as the Sox play the Mariners and Angels on the road.  Why the Mets are as high as 3rd I have no idea.  They are playing well, however and look like they are once again the favorites to have the best record in the NL, despite the Braves (#12) acquisitions at the ...

Mota Must Go!!!!!
2007-08-02 04:27:00
Last night, Guillermo Mota came in the 8th with 2 men on and attempted to hold the lead for Glavine.  All hope of that ended quickly as his first pitch was smacked into left field for a rbi double. I say its time to get rid of Mota!!!!!!! OK, so the steroid-using punk who has never EVER been good is brought in again by Willie who has tons of trust in him in big spots.  Mota ends all hope on one pitch and ruins it for Glavine.  Sure, it was not all Mota's fault, but it doesn't take away the fact that he stinks.  Mota has never been that good of a pitcher.  Let's go back to last year. Mota comes here for nothing, so why not give him a shot? (besides the fact that he had a 6.21 era in 34 games for Cleveland) In only 18 games, Mota produced a 1.00 ERA which was great.  He strengthened an already strong bullpen, but the problem was Willie began to gain way too much  trust from him...way too much.  Then, came October and there was Mota (on ste...

Trade Deadline Thoughts: Mets & Sox
2007-08-01 02:35:00
METS: The only move the Mets made was the acquisition of Twins 2B Luis Castillo.  The Mets didn't end up going after a starting pitcher and didn't end up with Nats RP Chad Cordero.  I'm glad the Mets held on to their main prospects, but I am a little disappointed that they could not come through with Cordero.  Castillo should slightly improve the mets offensively and defensively, but isn't a major change.  With all the Braves moves during the trade deadline, the Mets will have to play much better down the stretch to hold them off for the division title. RED SOX:  The Sox made the big splash of the AL, aquiring Eric Gagne from the Rangers.  I am a little disappointed that the Sox had to give up Kason Gabbard, who is a good young pitcher.  But, the bottomline is when Schilling comes back and with Lesters return we dont need him.  Okajima, Gagne, Papelbon is the scariest threesome in any bullpen by far in baseball.  The Sox already had t...

TRADE DEADLINE DEALS
2007-07-31 23:54:00
The Trade Deadline has come and passed and here are many of the deals that went through: The RED SOX acquired RP Eric Gagne from Texas for SP Kason Gabbard and prospects. The Braves acquired RP Octavio Dotel from the Royals in exchange for SP Kyle Davies.  They also acquired former Met Royce Ring from the Padres. The Phillies acquired RHP Julio Mateo from the Mariners. The Yankees traded RP Scott Proctor to the Dodgers for IF Wilson Betemit. The Padres acquired Rob Mackowiak and Morgan Ensberg. The RED SOX traded away Joel Pinero to the Cardinals for a player to be named later. OTHER NOTES The Mets reportedly offered Phillip Humber straight-up for Washington's Chad Cordero.  The Nats wanted more, like Lastings Milledge.  The Mets also thought about offering Carlos Gomez in a package for Eric Gagne but didn't pull the trigger before the Sox did.  The Brewers actually were closer to a deal for Gagne than the Mets were.  The Mets were also discussing a ...

Trade Deadline Daily News: Monday
2007-07-31 04:17:00
The Trade Deadline is heating up and today a few deals actually went through.  Many rumors remain out there as there is less than 24 hours to the deadline. TRADES The Atlanta Braves acquired Rangers 1B Mark Teixeira for Jarrod Saltamalacchia and others. The METS acquired 2B Luis Castillo from the Twins for 2 minor-league players. RUMORS The RED SOX were reportedly close to acquiring RF Jermiane Dye from the White Sox, but the negotiations have stalled as the White Sox apparently want "too much." The METS, Yanks, and RED SOX are all still very interested in Eric Gagne, but all are unwilling to depart with key prospects in their respective organizations. The METS still are intersted in OF Jay Payton. The METS still want Chad Cordero, but the NATS want Lastings Milledge in return.

Willie Must Go???????????
2007-07-30 05:14:00
After the bad managing by Mets Manager Willie Randolph yesterday in Game 2, the Met fans throughout the blog world are going crazy and many are demanding Willie get fired immediately.  This has been expressed a lot lately, mainly through the comment sections of blogs, such as MetsBlog and Mets Merized. In my opinion, this is ridiculous.  First of all, Willie has done a great job since he became manger in 05.  He's well over .500 and kept the team together throughout the good and the bad times.  And despite 12 players on the DL, underachieving carlos's, and inconsistent pitching, people want Willie fired?  You people are absolutely nuts.  Yea, sure let's get someone to step in right now, who has no idea about the team and doesn't have a relationship with the team.  That's a great idea.  Last time I checked the Mets had the best record in the National League, despite all their problems.  Willie has kept the team chemistry good thr...

The Phillies have also showed interest in Blanton, while also looking at Reds P Kyle Lohse and Astros P Jason Jennings. The Diamondbacks have joined the Mark Tiexeira race, but the Braves remain the favorites. The Cubs may still have some interest in former-Met Jay Payton. The Padres are interested in Mark Loretta and Mike Lamb. Sammy Sosa is unlikely to be traded. The Twins are very close to officially becoming sellers. Power Rankings: Sox Back to #1, Mets #4
2007-07-28 02:58:00
In the latest ESPN Power Rankings, the Boston Red Sox regained the #1 spot after taking a 1 week break from the list.  The Sox 62-40 record is the best in baseball.  The Mets jumped up a surprising 6 spots to #4.  The Mets all of the sudden have the best record in the NL again.  The Yankees have somehow moved up from 11th to 5th. #1#2#3 #4#5#6 To view the complete list through July 26, click HERE The Sox deserve to move back into the 1 spot, after taking 3/4 from the very talented Cleveland Indians.  Last week, I complained that the Mets deserved to be higher than 10th and were not worse than 3 other NL teams.  While I do think the Mets are the best team in the NL, #4 may still be a little high for them, as the AL is so much better than the weak NL.  The Yankees makes absolutely no sense to me.  They're beating up on some of the worst teams and pitching staffs in baseball (TB, KC) and they should get rewarded for that?  There is no wa...

Schilling's Thoughts on Steroids
2007-07-26 02:45:00
Once again, Curt Schilling spoke out, not afraid to speak his mind.  This stime he talked about the taciturn nature of both Barry Bonds, Mark McGuire, and other potential steroid users.  Schilling implied several times that if you don't deny it then your admitting to it.  Curt said all of this on HBO's "Costas Now." Schilling also made negative comments against Barry Bonds earlier in the year and attended that faithful Congress meeting a few years ago. To read more quotes from Schilling visit this report at ESPN by the AP. Unlike most people, I don't mind it when Schilling speaks up and speaks his mind.  It is wrong for someone to actually give their opinion on the "steroid era?"  Schilling has done a great job discussing tough issues, including steroids over the past few years.  His statements make sense.  If you don't deny it, you probably did it.  We all know Bonds and McGwire did it and Schilling is just stating what most playe...
