2007-07-24 23:38:00 Starting CornerbackCompetitors:Deshea TownsendBryant McFaddenInfo: This battle, between Steel er veteran Deshea Townsend and upstart Bryant McFadden is pretty intriguing. McFadden is a young guy with loads of potential. It's potential that can't be denied. Townsend is a veteran who lost his step a little bit last year. Both want the job and Mike Tomlin, former DBs coach in Tampa Bay, will pick the right guy for the job.Edge: McFadden did get snapes last year at CB and he did well. He is a former 2nd round pick whose ready to shine. He has the tools that could make a great starter.Dark Horse: Certainly the dark horse is Townsend, who wants to keep his job. He's got the experience and he's ready to compete.Winner: Potential and upside cannot be denied. McFadden will be the starter opposite Ike Taylor in the season opener. 2007-07-24 22:01:00 Backup Running Back Competitors:Kevan BarlowNajeh DavenportVerron HaynesInfo: With the signing of Kevan Barlow earlier in the offseason, the fight for Willie Parker's backup spot has become a three-horse race. There's Davenport (the incumbent), Haynes (the 3rd down back from last year), and Barlow (the hometown kid).Edge: Davenport is in the lead as he has the position on the depth chart from last year. But, some were upset that Najeh never became a bruiser back for the Steel ers.Dark horse: Barlow- he's got a new look on life, with a bitter departure from the 49ers and an unsuccessful campaign with the Jets, Barlow has been reinvigorated by signing with the Steelers .Winner: Davenport will have the job opening day he's got the most experience in that role and I don't know what Barlow has left. Also Haynes doesn't look to be the second running back. He'll get his reps on 3rd down. More About: Camp , Battles

2007-07-24 16:30:00 #5. a) LB Richard Koonce- A nice LB prospect. Was sent to NFL Europe and played solidly before ending his season with an injury. Works and plays hard. Has good intelligence of the game. b) LB Marcello Church-Former teammate of Timmons at FSU, missed his entire senior season, and could be a nice pickup. Was phased out some at FSU by other LB's like Nicholson, Sims, and Wimbley. c) LB Derek Rehage- Was also delegated to NFL Europe and formed a great tandem with Koonce, and led his team in sacks.**One of these LB prospects definitely has a sot at making the team, and with a 5 game preseason schedule, they'll all be seeing tons of playing time.#4. OL Darnell Stapleton- undrafted free agent out of Rutgers. Former teammate of 5th round draft pick Cameron Stephenson. Undersized (285 lbs.), needs to put on weight and will see most of his time a RG/C. With openings everywhere on the line, he could have a shot with a great camp.#3. C... Polamalu signs extension
2007-07-23 22:14:00 Steelers safety Troy Polamalu has signed a 4 year, $30 million contract extension with the Steelers on Monday. Ed Bouchette reports that with the new extension, Polamalu will become the highest paid safety in the league. Polamalu is guaranteed just above $15 million out of the $30 million in the contract. It is just the latest signing for the Steelers, in a flurry of contracts that have been signed in the last 5 days. Polamalu is signed for 5 more years, at $6.6 million per year. The move makes it clear who the Steelers hold as their best defensive player. Troy Polamalu will keep the secondary relevant in Pittsburgh for the next 5 years. 2007-07-23 18:03:00 #5: Willie Colon:Willie Colon, a second year offensive lineman, may be the biggest threat for Max Starks and Kendall Simmons. Mike Tomlin has said that he will make sure that Colon is in the mix competing for a job. Colon is scary to them because of his versatility and could very well have a job on the right side of the line.#4. Willie Reid: Willie Reid, a return specialist out of Florida St., was sorely missed last year when he went down early in the season with a foot injury. He tried to make a comeback but never really worked out. A team like the Steelers with one of the worst special teams could use a returner like Reid and he's back to 100% this season. Plus, he may prove to be a solid receiver.#3. Lamarr Woodley:Tenacious pass rusher out of Michigan. The rookie 2nd rounder is a great option for blitzing packages and his motor never stops. He goes 110% every time the ball is snapped. Has wonderful potential, but still needs time to learn the role of OLB, so he'll be used most... More About: Watch , Players , Interest , Layer , Eres

2007-07-23 17:08:00 The Alan Faneca SituationIt all started with the richest offeseason in NFL history. A ballooning salary cap left teams with a much higher spending limit. Derrick Dockery, Leonard Davis, Eric Steinbach, and Kris Dielman: all guards, no pro bowls, and a fat $7 million a year salary. Faneca, the best guard in the league saw this and wanted that kind of money for his contract extension. The Steelers, feeling that Faneca may be on the decline, decided not to offer that and negotiations went to a stalemate. Then came mini-camp. A disgruntled Faneca was removed from practice for being a distraction. Then came the trade rumors, but that never came to pass. Bottomline: Faneca is playing for his big contract this year. He cannot "afford" to be a distraction. The Steelers are getting the best of Faneca's remaining years, while giving the younger a linemen little longer to get ready to takeover that left guard spot. 2007-07-23 16:37:00 The First Year of New Head Coach, Mike Tomlin. For only the 3rd time in 38 years the Steelers head into a new season with a new coach: Chuck Noll, Bill Cowher and now Mike Tomlin. After an in-depth interviewing process, Tomlin was named head coach: bearing out candidates like Russ Grimm, Ken Whisenhunt, and Ron Rivera.Tomlin, a no nonsense coach with deep love and intelligence for the game, was a product of Tony Dungy's "Tampa-2" scheme. He was a DB coach for the Bucs and then came to Minnesota as a Def. Coordinator. He led the Vikings to one of the best run defenses in the league. In his first press conference as coach of the Steelers, Tomlin promised two things: run the ball and play good defense: something which is expected in Pittsburgh. Then came the NFL Draft in April: Tomlin drafted the future of the club: Timmons, Woodley, Sepulveda, and McBean could all be anywhere from great to good players in the "3-4 hybrid" that Tomlin will run.Earlier this month Tomlin released the trai... They'll All Be in On Time: Steelers sign Timmons to 5-year deal
2007-07-23 00:26:00 The Steel ers came to terms Sunday with rookie 1st round pick, LB Lawrence Timmons. Timmons signed a 5 year, $15 million contract with $8 million guaranteed Sunday afternoon. The signing completes rookie negotiations and guarantees that all players will report to camp on time. Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said that he expected to see everyone on Monday for the start of training camp and he will.Earlier in the week, Timmons' agent, Drew Rosenhaus, said that Timmons would be in camp on time and he kept his word. Rosenhaus' rookie clients, Timmons and Bears TE Greg Olsen, are the only 1st rounders along with LT Joe Staley to sign with their respective teams.Timmons was the most important of all the rookies to be in camp on time, as a groin-injury hampered his mini-camp earlier this year and he is behind on gaining experience in Dick LeBeau's defense. The signing is just more good news heading into camp. The only thing left on the Steelers plate is Troy Polamalu's contract extension, ... More About: Time , Deal , Sign , Year

Quick Note: Lawrence Timmons Contract Discussions
2007-07-17 21:06:00 On the topic of Steelers first round pick Lawrence Timmons' contract negotiations, Drew Rosenhaus, Timmons' agent, says he hopes to meet with the Steelers later this week and continue to exchange offers. Rosenhaus, the most recognizable NFL player agent, has a notorious reputation for getting his players signed and in camp on time and avoiding a holdout. I expect that a deal will get done for Timmons by Sunday night and he will report for the start of camp Monday afternoon.Below are quotes taken from John Harris' article in today's Pittsburgh Tribune-Review:"We've both exchanged proposals, and I hope to meet with the team at some point in the near future," Rosenhaus said Monday. Willie Parker should be the Steelers' goal-line back in 2007
2007-07-17 00:41:00 There's some talk going into camp that Willie might be demoted from his role as the goal-line back for the Steelers. With the re-signing of Najeh Davenport and the pickup of Kevan Barlow, some feel that Willie's goal-line position is now threatend. There's only one thing I can say to that. Are you serious? Najeh Davenport never proved that he was a back that would knock people over and Kevan Barlow has size, but he's not really a threat.Willie Parker wanted to be the goal-line back last year and he earned it in training camp. The previous year HE would get the Steelers inside the 5 yard line and Bettis would finish it off. But, last year he was so effective. He ran and caught touchdowns inside the 5 last year. It would be foolish for Tomlin not to utilize Parker inside the red zone, and use Haynes, Davenport, and Barlow in situational spots as third-down backs, etc. In short, it makes absolutely no sense not to keep Willie as the goal line back. He's the best running back on... More About: Goal , Back , Line

More articles from this author:2007-07-03 15:26:00 Let me start by bragging a little bit. My fantasy team last year was something fierce. Here's the running back's for last year Tomlinson, Parker, and Gore. Yes, that's 3 of this year's top 5 fantasy running backs. Oh yeah, I also had Maurice Jones-Drew for about half the season too.1. LaDainian Tomlinson RB, Chargers 2006 stats-1815 rush yds, 31 total td, 5.2 yds/rush Tomlinson had the best season of any running back in NFL history. He completely shattered Shaun Alexander's record for total touchdowns in a season. I don't expect him to even touch 31 td's this season, but I do expect him between the 20 to 24 td range. He is the best running back in the league and it doesn't help to have Lorenzo Neal leading the way.2. Larry Johnson RB, Chiefs 2006 stats-1789 rush yds, 19 total td, 4.3 yds/rush #2 goes to Larry Johnson. He set the NFL record for carries in a season last year with 416. Although the Chiefs QB situation is up in the air, he won't get the same load this seas... More About: Guns , Fantasy 1, 2, 3 |
