The Run That Never Happened.... (Or, Sloth,The Fourth Deadly Sin! ;-) )
2008-03-03 01:57:00 This picture about sums up my state of being this afternoon. The odds were greater that the cat in the above picture would actually start to speak to his human servant (er, I mean "owner"!) to ask for a refill on his beer, & "By the way, could you pass me the Cheetos?" -- than the likelihood of me going for a run this afternoon. Our furry friend might also be thinking that there isn't enough TV programming geared towards his demographic. ;-)Running? What's that?! (That could've been this post's alternate title. ;-) )Well, I never did quite make it out of house for today's expected "run."According to the weather forecast, it was supposed to reach 53 degrees this afternoon. So, I decided to wait until the warmest point in the day before heading out the door.Around 2 pm, it was around 39 degrees. Still not as warm as expected.By 3 pm, it was 45 degrees. Why wasn't it warmer at this point? Usually 3 pm is when the winter sun's at its warmest! And by 4 pm, it was 48 degr... More About: Deadly
The "Top Commenters" Feature Glitch Needs A Fix! Will You Be The One To Sa
2008-03-02 21:01:00 As many of you already know, the "Top Commenters" widget is a great feature because it rewards your top commenters & encourages others to get into the act. And of course, the competitive spirit of runners adds an extra dimension to the equation. ;-)Having said that, I'm having a few pangs of regret for having added this feature in Blogger, because it's been acting up & I'm not sure exactly how to fix the problem. (And yes, I've already contacted the tool's creator in hopes of finding/receiving a solution. He hasn't responded yet & it's been a significant lapse in time, which makes me think that he very likely doesn't have a solution. I just wrote him again recently, but am not exactly holding my breath. ;-) )"So what's the problem with this tool?" you might ask. And, if you are a new blogger, &/or are unfamiliar with this terminology (i.e., geek-speak!) &/or troubleshooting technical or blog-related problems, some of you might also possibly be asking at... The Weather's Looking Good Today & So's The Idea of Running!
2008-03-02 17:10:00 Although it's only 32 degrees right now, it's supposed to warm up to 53 degrees later on today. My energy's back & the cold & cough have subsided considerably, (said with fingers crossed!). So a run is looking very likely today. Yea! I'm so excited!!!!! Finally, eh?!Will post again after my run. Will check in with you then, OK? More About: Running , Today , Idea , Good

What's Your Opinion of The "Health & Wellness Blog"?
2008-03-01 05:49:00 Speaking of health (or lack thereof), I should probably mention a wellness blog I recently found, which will very likely be of some interest to you:Health & Wellness Blog I'm curious to hear your opinions on this blog. More Rest and Some Weight Gain
2008-02-29 16:39:00 Hi All,Just checking in for a quick "Hello!" Hope you are all doing well! Not much to report on the running front, as I haven't exactly been doing much of that lately!;-) The lungs are still giving me a run for my money & am still struggling to get better. And since the last running effort seemed to make things feel worse & not better, I'm resolved to take the advice of many of my fellow runner-bloggers (Abi, Steve, Eric G., Blaine, Tim, Dave G., et al) & not run until I'm physically/mentally ready & feel 100% better. Will probably go for a walk at some point, but right now it's my prerogative to milk the rest period for all it's worth!Weighed myself a few days ago (i.e., around 4 days ago or so) & not surprisingly, all the weight I lost during my sickness has, of course, returned, & then some. Using the figures from my last weigh-in on 2/3/08, I've gained about 4.4 lbs. Yikes! Thankfully, my BF% hasn't skyrocketed along with that, which is, of... More About: Weight , Rest
My First Run in Almost 2 Weeks!
2008-02-18 21:17:00 It was certainly a very windy & chilly 59 degrees indeed for my first run in 13 days (i.e., my first run since recovering from bronchitis or whatever sort of upper respiratory illness I had). Now that I'm back at the house writing this, I see that the outside temperature has since dropped a few degrees to 56 degrees; so while it was apparently 59 degrees when I left the house for my run, the temperature might've actually been slightly colder during the actual run. It certainly felt like it!Using the "dress-20-degrees-warmer" rule, I dressed in only a long-sleeved shirt & tights. However, after several very chilly laps, I'd begun to wish that I'd brought a jacket!I had an OK run today, which began at 2:32 pm today. I did a total of 4 laps (2.96 miles) in 39:53 minutes (or a rather glacial pace of 13:28 minutes-per-mile), which very well might've been the slowest time I'd ever run for that distance! Frankly, I wasn't trying to break any world records today ;-), the ... More About: Weeks
I'm Back! Am I Starting All Over Again?! Let's Hope Not!
2008-02-18 16:30:00 Hello All,I realize it's been exactly 10 days since my last post, & I'm finally feeling strong enough to the point where I can consider walking & perhaps even running. My lungs are the chief issue, as they are still not 100%, although the rest of me is certainly feeling a whole lot better. (I'm 99.9999% percent sure that I had bronchitis or some sort of upper respiratory infection, which either way, really takes a toll on the lungs.) My appetite is definitely back, & while I may've lost several pounds during my illness, I know that it's not the kind of weight-loss that's permanent nor advisable to get too excited about, as it didn't come about via normal, healthy means. Of course, the key factor of importance is really my body-fat percentage, which strangely enough, went up slightly during my illness, despite my overall lack of food intake during this period! This seems to be a common inverse coupling of late: When my weight goes down, my BF goes up & vic... More About: Back , Hope
Coming Up For Air
2008-02-08 16:36:00 Hello All,I've been bedridden for the past several days with what appears to either be bronchitis or possibly the flu. Whatever this illness is, it's totally drained me of my energy; I've been feeling so weak that it's been hard to even sit up, let alone get out of bed.Frankly, I've never felt so utterly exhausted before from being sick. Usually, during an illness of this nature, I can atleast manage to get out of bed to get a bite to eat or go to the bathroom, but this time around, it's been hard to manage even these few simple things over the last few days.In fact, this morning's been the first time I've had enough energy to leave the confines of my bed for longer than a minute or two. In the span of the last three days, I think I've managed to check my email twice (which includes today), and due to the severity of my illness, have only been able to respond to correspondence of the most vital nature.Over the past few days, I've basically been doing nothing but sleep...
Run 1, Week 7 (CT5K): The Beginning of The End :-(
2008-02-06 02:38:00 Even though the date on this post is 2/5/08, I didn't actually post it until 2/18/07, due to my illness. The basic facts I can recall is that I ran with my friend for 25 minutes around 6:30 pm or so. It was 57 degrees or so (but with wind chill factor felt much, much colder!) & rainy. Hadn't been feeling good all day, so I skipped my solo run but decided that I could probably stick it out & run with my friend. A very bad idea, looking back on it. Of course, as they say, hindsight is 20/20, & think I've learned my lesson. ;-)See details from the post, "Coming Up For Air," dated 2/8/08, for more details on this out-of-sync post & its subsequent explanation. Weigh-In: Phew, It's Good News!
2008-02-04 06:55:00 After all of the not-so-great eating I'd previously reported, I have some surprisingly pleasant news to share: I lost an additional 2.8% body fat! And from my last report on 1/13/08, it looks like I've only gained a minuscule fraction of a pound, somewhere between 0.2 and 0.4 to be exact -- I couldn't tell because the number kept varying slightly with repeated weighings, which I did in order to get the most accurate measurement possible. I find that my digital scale wavers slightly between fractions of a pound when I step on it. The body fat measurements also fluctuate slightly, but I understand that this is normal, due to the way in which these digital body fat scales calculate their measurements. (Of course, one of the most accurate ways to measure one's body fat is to step into one of those immersion tanks.)Believe it or not, the latter information (i.e., the slight weight gain) is actually good news, as this means I've lost most of the weight I probably gained over the p... Run 1, Week 2 (BTHR-P2): Giving It My All!
2008-02-03 22:30:00 It's 54 degrees & sunny in the beginning of February! How freakin' fabulous is that?!Started today's run at 3:08 pm. It was beautiful outside, and almost felt like Spring! A really perfect day for a run.And not surprisingly, it was rather crowded at the lake today. People were everywhere, and going in every direction too! At first, I felt like I was running the gauntlet, instead of a towpath. ;-)Some days I don't mind running the great "human obstacle course," but frankly today was not one of those days. I wasn't in the mood to jostle past spacey people who weren't body-aware or watching where they were going, or to zig-zag around small children fanning out randomly and running every which way, often launching like little rockets from the arms of their parents. (In fact, I narrowly escaped a crash-course collision with a hyperactive little tot on a big wheel, who was flying headlong in reverse right onto the running path.) The little kids are cute, for sure, and if... More About: Week , Giving
Where's Waldo, er, I mean, Corey?
2008-02-03 22:08:00 Hello again everybody! Before I get started with my usual weekend running report, I'd like to thank those of you who've emailed & posted comments asking me how I'm doing & letting me know that you missed me. Awwww, thanks so much! That really meant a lot to me. You are all incredibly supportive and thoughtful, and kind; and, as I'm going through a rather "challenging" phase in my life right now, (that's the nicest word for it! ;-) ), I can't tell you how much I appreciate hearing these kind words from all of you right now. Many of you have pointed out that I've been MIA on this blog lately. A week has passed, and my usual pattern of posting atleast 3 times a week (i.e., the "post-per-run pattern"!) was temporarily broken when I belatedly posted the last two reports of my runs. Some of you probably even noticed that, when you'd last checked this blog -- perhaps yesterday or a few days ago -- that you hadn't seen any posts earlier in the week, and then suddenly, posts f...
Run 3, Week 1 (BTHR-P2) + Run 3, Week 6 (CT5K): It's Starting to Get Intere
2008-02-01 05:57:00 Today's solo run began at 5:16 pm. It was 39 degrees, and the schedule called for 55 minutes of running. In reality, I ended up running 7 laps (5.18 miles) in 1:03:00 or 63 minutes, and did the first 4 laps in 35:01 minutes. That translates into roughly a 11:49 minute-per-mile pace for the first 4 laps, & a 12:09 minute-per-mile pace for the entire distance.Next, at 6:41 pm, my friend & I did a total of 25 consecutive minutes of running. I congratulated my friend on completing her first 25 minute run -- we gave each other high-fives at the end -- & then we chatted briefly about what was in store for next week. It's hard to believe that we only have 3 more weeks left to the program! And I think it helped to talk about that, as it reinforces how much progress we've made together as a unit. Yea, we're almost there! While we did our cool-down walk, I gave my friend an overview of the remaining three weeks of the CT5K program, in which we'll be gradually building f... More About: Week
Run 2, Week 1 (BTHR-P2) + Run 2, Week 6 (CT5K): Late Starts & Slow Runs
2008-01-30 05:58:00 This is going to be a super-short post today:Went for my solo run at 5:24 pm tonight. It was 39 degrees outside. On today's schedule was 45 minutes of running. Ran a total of 6 laps (4.44 miles) today in 52:43 minutes today, or an 11:52 minute-mile pace. (No comment necessary; at this point, you can probably read my mind! Or if not, just look at the title of this post or my reactions to recent runs from the past week or two & you'll get the drift. ;-) )Barely finished my solo run in time for my next run with my friend. Thankfully, my friend was running late today, as it gave me enough time to finish plus a few minutes to spare. Basically, my cool-down walk turned into the warm-up walk for our joint run. ;-)Next, my friend & I ran our next run at around 6:20 pm or so. We did two intervals of 10 minutes each, separated by a 3 minute interval. It went really well.Took usual regimen of vitamins & glucosamine chondroitin pills. Aside from being tremendously tired ... It's Strength-Training Sunday! + That's Entertainment, Folks!
2008-01-28 05:59:00 Did a strength-training session tonight in my makeshift home gym, but before that happened, I did something rather unorthodox for tonight's pre-lifting warm-up:OK, I'm going to reveal something that few of us are probably brave enough to publicly admit, let alone blog about: Yes, I danced around the room all by myself in my own living room. (In case you were wondering, the blinds were, in fact, closed, thank you very much!) Imagine me breaking out into a dance, perhaps in a scene not altogether unlike the one from Risky Business, except with a very different soundtrack (not exactly a big Bob Seger fan!), and also replace the cool sunglasses & white button-down shirt with workout attire. ;-)I just rocked out & let loose! Danced to some great electronic music with a heavy drums & bass -- It had this really pulsating, driving dance beat! It felt great! As I flew around the house with wild abandon, my cats were eying me in a peculiar, wide-eyed way, which made me laugh... Run 1, Week 1 (BTHR-P2) + Run 1, Week 6 (CT5K): Got to Keep Moving to Stay
2008-01-26 18:55:00 Just got back from my two runs of the day. According to the weather report, we ran in 30 degree weather. Right now, my hands are so cold, I can barely type! They were warm while I was running, but of course became cold again when I stopped. And, yes, I had warm gloves, but they apparently weren't warm enough! ;-)OK, well this post's going to be brief, as I've got a lot of job-hunt related stuff I've got to take care of today:My first run (which I started at 1:25 PM this afternoon) was supposed to be 40 minutes, but in order to complete my usual 5 laps (3.7 miles), my time was actually closer to 43 minutes, 43:05 minutes to be precise. That means I ran a 11:38:39 pace today. That's a marked improvement over last week's 40-minute runs, but slower than the week before that. Considering I only got 5 hours of sleep (yes, still not sleeping well!), I'd say that the run was still decent. Frankly, what I'm most ecstatic about is that I've been running for several weeks s... Expect the Unexpected....
2008-01-25 07:56:00 Tonight's joint run with my friend & my solo run were postponed, as there wasn't enough time to do both runs (or even one of the runs!) before the start of tonight's 7:30 pm showing of "Spirit of the Marathon." I'll probably end up doing my solo run tomorrow, & my friend & I are making tentative plans to run this weekend, possibly either this Saturday or Sunday. Now I know of course that you'll probably all anxiously awaiting my review of this movie. ;-) LOL. But before you get too excited, I've decided to let the whole experience settle in a bit, and also give myself a bit more time to make sense of the chicken scratch I haphazardly scrawled onto a small notepad in complete darkness!I certainly feel like a reporter or a movie critic, (or perhaps more like a ten-year old about to give her first school book report)! But after looking at my notes, which run diagonally across the page and often overlap each other, I'm beginning to think that maybe I missed my callin... Nutrition Tip #8: The Scientific Reasoning Behind the Sweeth-Tooth Phenomen
2008-01-24 10:52:00 OK, this is a really weird coincidence. I was just blogging about sugar cravings, & lo and behold, I just hopped over to my blogger-pal Dana's blog, Run Granola Run, to check out what was going on over there, and what do I see? Weight-Loss Goal Reassessment + Confessions of A Sugar Addict!
2008-01-24 07:01:00 Well, it looks like, at the rate I'm going, I'm probably not going to meet my original goal of losing 15 lbs. by 3/31/08, so I've modified the goal to losing 10 lbs. by that same date. That's still possibly stretching it a bit, but maybe I've got some hope in hell of achieving it. Heheheheheh.Right now, this goal is extra challenging due to a particularly higher-than-normal stress level. With regard to my eating, I'm doing OK, just not great, that's all. But I know I can't expect to lose weight/body fat the way I've been eating lately.Maybe instead of displaying the rather tame-looking photo of a scale which appears at the top of this post, it'd be more appropriate to post pictures of all of the naughty, sugary things I've been eating lately! ;-) Except that then this blog entry would contain nothing but pictures with long stretches of blank space. Run 3, Week 5 (CT5K) + Run 3, Week 5 (BTHR): A Nexus of Sorts
2008-01-23 05:51:00 Before our run, my friend & I chatted briefly. We decided to push back our run to 6:30 pm, because we were both busy finishing up various projects. I could tell she was feeling some initial resistance to the idea of running tonight, because she started in with her usual tactics. ;-) She told me that it was 36 degrees outside and looked very cold, to which I countered that, according to the weather reports I'd seen, that it was actually closer to 40 degrees (i.e., 39 degrees to be exact, but I decided to round up by one degree to make the number seem more attractive!).Still, I knew I might need to do some more convincing. So, to further fortify the cause, I tried another tactic & and dispensed a bit of "tough love" couched in humor. I jokingly told her, "Oh come on now, no excuses this time! You're not going to bail on me, eh?!" I laughed afterward & added a "Only kidding!" at the end, but I'm pretty sure she knew that all kidding aside, I was not about to let he... More About: Week

Brief But Useful Training Tip, & Some Reflections on Achieving Balance
2008-01-22 20:35:00 I found this common-sense training tip in Runner's World (i.e., under Training -->Training Essentials-->Training Tips). While it's short & sweet, it certainly makes a whole lot of sense!Taking a balanced approach to training is, of course, a recurring piece of wisdom, espoused by coaches, personal fitness trainers, and runners alike. When our training is not going well or is somehow out of whack, it's usually because we need to reassess our training balance: Are we working out our upper & lower body, core & limbs, brain & heart, all in equal measure?Of course, balance in training, as well as in life, is often easier said than done. Most of us runners lead busy lives, filled with continual activities revolving around work, family, friends, & our communities at large. How do we manage it all? Some of us have gained mastery in this area by continual practical application. Dare I also use the dreaded "D" word -- discipline?! Does that particular word possibly conjur... More About: Reflections , Balance

Run 2, Week 5 (BTHR): You Can't Judge Your Pace By How It Feels!
More articles from this author:2008-01-20 01:20:00 It was 37 degrees and cloudy when I went for my run today at 5:15 pm. On the schedule was 40 minutes of running at a moderate pace. I did 5 laps (or 3.7 miles) in 43:20 minutes, or a 11:42 minute mile pace.At the 4 lap-marker (2.96 miles), I believe I'd clocked roughly 34 minutes and a certain number of seconds that I can't seem to recall! (Depending of whether the number of seconds were on lower or higher end of the scale, I estimate that my pace at the 4-lap marker could've been anywhere from an 11:29 minute to an 11:44 minute mile pace.)It's funny because I thought that the last 2 laps (i.e., laps 4 & 5) felt faster than the first few, but apparently they weren't really that much faster in reality. Sometimes the feel of a run doesn't correlate to one's actual pace!Considering my "fast" pace of an 11:17 minute mile (or a total of 41:45 minutes) only a few days earlier, today's run, relatively speaking, could certainly be considered a more moderate pace. ;-) OK, wel...
