Wrong Team Wins Stanley Cup
2008-06-05 14:03:00 There has to be some kind of mistake here. Gary Bettman, commissioner of the NHL, rigged the entire hockey season just so the Pittsburgh Penguins---his favorite team---would win the Stanley Cup . Unfortunately, they lost in game 6 and some other team got to take home the trophy. How on Earth are we supposed to have a conspiracy if the wrong team wins? I'm not going to talk much more about this. Detroit winning the Cup is the finishing touch on a season I'm glad is over. The quicker we can all put 2007-08 behind us, the better. My advice to you: stay clear of Red Wings blogs and/or fans for a while. They're going to be pretty intolerable for some time. Pens in 9. More About: Team , Wrong , Wins
The Most Beautiful Sound: Silence At The Joe
2008-06-03 14:44:00 The Detroit Red Wings were less than a minute away from the Stanley Cup. Up 3-2, the fans at Joe Louis Arena were on their feet and chanting "We Want The Cup," over and over and over. All the Wings had to do was clear the puck and run out the clock. And then a man named Maxime shoveled some garbage from the slot past Chris OsBAD (hold your applause) and sucked the life right out of the building. It was the most beautiful sound in the entire world: complete silence in Detroit. Joe Louis = Stunned. With only 35 34.7 seconds remaining, Max Talbot scored the equalizer and forced the game into overtime, giving the Penguins (down 3 games to 1) a new lease on life. And not just one overtime, but three overtimes that lasted well past midnight in the Eastern Time Zone. I have to admit, I tried to stay up and watch the whole thing, but I passed out near the start of the third OT period, which means I missed the game winner (by the Penguins) but got a nice surprise when... Stay Off My Lawn, You Hockey Hooligans
2008-05-30 17:21:00 Reports have now come out that the NHL has narrowed down its options for the next outdoor game (January 1st, 2009) to be held either in Chicago or in Pittsburgh, with at least the Red Wings or the Penguins being featured. The apparent front-running stadium to host the event, though, is Wrigley Field, the hallowed "friendly confines" of the Chicago Cubs. The game would be between the Blackhawks (an exciting, improving, and young team with two blossoming superstars) and the Wings (an old, decrepit band of losers who might smear their greasy paws on the Stanley Cup this year). But don't rule out Yankee Stadium just yet. The soon-to-be-demolished relic of baseball lore could still be chosen to host an outdoor game between the Rangers and the Bruins (yay, another East Coast-centric and over-hyped rivalry game). The only other option on the table as far as locations go is the football stadium at Penn State University, called Beaver Stadium or "Happy Valley" (capac... More About: Hockey , Stay , Hooligans
Penguins Remain Undefeated
2008-05-29 13:52:00 At Mellon Arena. Since February. After taking the first two games of the Stanley Cup Finals off, the Pittsburgh Penguins finally got their act together and showed the world that they can indeed play hockey with the Red Wings. And beat them 3-2. Sidney Crosby led the charge with two goals and Marian Hossa had two assists. Evgeni Malkin was still a no-show on the scoreboard but he played harder and looked much more confident on the ice than in the previous two games. Johan Franzen made the Penguins defense look ridiculous when he scored a goal on a second period power play, but the Wings couldn't catch up and didn't dominate the ice like before. Darn. Marc-Andre Fleury significantly out-performed Chris Osgood, who stopped 21 of 24 shots compared to Fleury's 32 saves on 34 shots. Oh, and Osgood is still a diving liar. In other important news, Pensburgh hit nearly 400 comments on their game thread last night, which included an impressive showing from M... More About: Undefeated
Kristen Bell Is Dead To Me
2008-05-28 20:36:00 Okay, I admit I used to have a slight fixation on a certain short, blonde Hollywood starlet for a while. But then this happened and I moved on. She doesn't call anymore anyway. When that relationship ended, I had to find another tiny, adorable young vixen to stalk write poetry to and I figured Kristen Bell was as good as any other. Cute, friendly, and all-in-all a wholesome character. Until I read this: I grew up in Detroit and have always been a huge Wings fan. They have heart, skill, class and the best color combination known to man. That is why they will win. Oh, it gets worse, don't worry: Chris Osgood was my first crush. Brad Pitt be damned, he had nothing on Osgood's rookie skill and sad eyes. There was actually a day in high school when I wrote on a name tag 'Mrs. Osgood' and wore it the whole day. I really thought we were perfect for each other. I'd love to meet him and probably apologize that things never worked out. Well, I guess Kristen Bell is... More About: Dead
Stanley Cup Finals Game 3
2008-05-28 17:28:00 This is just a friendly reminder to take your SCF chit chat over to Pensburgh , where the Penguins die-hards like FrankD and JDunman will be desperately seeking as much moral support as they can get. Who better to prop up their sagging spirits when facing the Red Wings than Avalanche fans? Head over to Pensburgh and chime in once he gets the thread posted. Unless of course you're rooting against the Penguins and for the Red Wings. In that case, you should just find a dark cellar and lock yourself in it. Forever. The Finals Really Suck So Far
2008-05-27 14:51:00 Wow. The Pittsburgh Penguins went into the Stanley Cup Finals as the underdogs to the Detroit Red Wings, sure, but nobody expected them to be so heavy on the "under." With last night's shutout victory ---the second of the series---the Wings took a 2-0 series lead and have outscored the Penguins seven goals to none. Who would have believed that a team with Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Marian Hossa wouldn't be able to buy a goal after dominating their previous three playoff opponents? And what happened to Marc-Andre Fleury? Is it time to call in Ty Conklin? The good news for the Penguins is that they now head back home to Mellon Arena, where they haven't lost since February (no kidding). Also good news is that a 2-0 deficit is not nearly as tough to overcome as a 3-0 deficit. But the odds are still against them. I was in Pittsburgh this weekend (the Cubs lost in extra innings on both Saturday and Sunday, darn it), and I have to say the city has rea... More About: Suck
You Say Granaito, I Say Granato
2008-05-23 15:37:00 [Please forgive the incredibly lame (and nonsensical) title. It's been a long week. - Joe] So we've all had a night to calmly and politely reflect on the not-so-surprise re-hiring of Tony Granato as the head coach of the Colorado Avalanche. Our initial shock and massive migraine have subsided by now. The Percocet hangover is starting to kick in. Some of us were outraged yesterday. Some of us were unimpressed but un-angry. Others were at least open to the idea that Granato could be maybe a good coach for the current incarnation of the Avalanche. Maybe. I think there's probably at least one guy, somewhere, that is really excited and happy that GM Francois Giguere went the way that he did---and that one guy is not even named "Tony Granato." It is what it is. Despite the obvious and overwhelmingly negative reaction from the fans and the hockey blogosphere in general, not to mention most of us at MHH, Tony Granato is the new old coach o...
New Coach Same As The Old Coach
2008-05-22 22:25:00 Please excuse my absence during the surprise announcement that Avalanche assistant coach (and former head coach) Tony Granato will be taking the reigns left to him by Joel Quenneville next season. Sometimes I actually have to do work at my job. Anyway, it's probably not worth saying how disappointed I am, and not because I dislike Tony Granato---I don't---but because we all know the Avalanche needs a new direction from the top down. Recycling old coaches (and clinging to an old era) is probably not the best strategy for a team that could be seeing the departure of long-time captain Joe Sakic (this summer or next), not to mention Peter Forsberg and Adam Foote (eventually). Whether they like it or not, the Avalanche front office is going to have to start thinking toward the future. Now, as for the selection of Granato, it's not really a shocker, honestly. Pierre Lacroix may not be the GM anymore, but he's still pulling the strings and you have to know that ... More About: Coach
Granato Named Heach Coach
2008-05-22 20:14:00 I shit you not. More to come after I stop the bleeding from banging my head against the wall. OK, I think I managed to cauterize the wound with a ham and cheese Hot Pocket. UPDATE: MHH stalwart and insightful thedoctor posted a diary FanPost a scant few hours ago talking about this rumor. Jibbles launched into a profanity-laced tirade. I feel you brother. However, you should have gotten on the Batphone ASAP. Send up smoke signals or something. I feel bushwacked. I have no idea where Joe is today. DD has the news up too. He's somewhat non-committal, but ... meh, what are you going to do? The news made Skeletor cry too. Anybody think this is a good thing yet? Puck Daddy (aka Greggy W) has weighed in. As I told the Mrs., apparantly embracing mediocrity wasn't enough, they want to french-kiss it into submission. Don't make them touch !!??!! UPDATE 2: As Jibbles so eloquently pointed out, Dater has weighed in . He suggests some... More About: Coach
Profiles in Courage: Ben Guite
2008-05-21 19:13:00 I’ve banged out a few of these pseudo-profiles back in the day at BBnR and I thought I’d do a few more during this offseason. Unfortunately for the Avs, their offseason started early. I’ve had bits and pieces of this one on the back burner for a while so here goes. This is kinda my version of one of DD’s report cards, but more fanboy-ish. With award season for the hockey world creeping ever closer as the Stanley Cup Finals slide toward us like a glacier before the impact of global warming, I’m going to throw this out there: I’d like to nominate Mr. Ben Guite for the first ever MHH Unsung Hero Award. He has the following qualifications: Gets oodles of PK minutes and ended the regular season with the most short-handed time on ice among forwards on the entire team. Clearly, he is a responsible defensive forward or he wouldn’t be out there in those situations. He’s 2nd on the team in ... More About: Profiles
Wings Coach Poaching: Avalanche Fans All For It
2008-05-21 14:56:00 You'd think, considering our serious hatred for anything and everyone associated with the Detroit Red Wings , that we fans of the Colorado Avalanche would be against hiring one of their assistant coaches for any job outside the Pepsi Center concession stands. But you'd be wrong. Todd McLellan, the mastermind behind Detroit's killer power play and an all-around solid coach, is apparently the top candidate for the head coaching job in Denver. And the fans are all for it. The Denver Post put McLellan up against Kevin Dineen, Ron Wilson and Tony Granato and it wasn't even close: On a side note, Kevin Dineen has vowed to stay in the race despite his clear second-place finish and the numerical impossibility of him winning the poll. McLellan also has the support of a former Avalanche defensmen, the impossible-to-pronounce-correctly-on-the- first-try Curtis Leschyshyn. Leschyshyn, now a competitive cyclist and a member of the early Avalanche team that won the Cup in 96... More About: Fans , Coach

Because Tomorrow Is Another Day
2008-05-19 17:14:00 No posts from me today as I ready for the Big Switch, which, barring any unforseen circumstances like a power outage or a server crash, should happen in the very early hours of tomorrow morning. The site will be down briefly as the transition to the new platform is made, and then it's full steam ahead from there. There will be a lengthy post made about your membership account, the various features of the site, and the overall functionality of the SBN 2.0 system. It's been relatively smooth on the other blogs in the network so far, so hopefully we will have an equally easy time with it.Other than that, I just want to say that no matter what happens in Game 6, I'm a huge fan of the Dallas Stars right now and I'm excited for the Penguins. It's going to be a fun Stanley Cup Finals, that's for sure. More About: Tomorrow
Woody Paige Not A Man Of The People
2008-05-16 22:34:00 Because we're Avalanche fans, we're forced to call the sports reporters and columnists at the Denver Post (Adrian Dater, Mike Chambers, Terry Frei, Mark Kiszla and Woody Paige ) our reporters and columnists. Whether or not we agree with them all the time (or ever), they're part of the home team, so to speak. In the case of Woody Paige , that means we spend most of our time rolling our eyes and being embarrassed by him. He writes a lot of ridiculous, juvenile, not-as-funny-as-he-thinks stuff, and then makes a fool of himself daily on the ESPN argument show Around The Horn. He builds his puff piece columns around horrendous one-liners (like "Foppa wasn't some faux pas") and more or less dumbs down everything he talks about. But, because he's a Denver columnist and he writes about the Avalanche, he's ours. Kind of. That means that we might care about how other people, those who mostly know him from his "work" on ESPN rather than his columns about the... More About: People , The People

One Candidate Out: No Patrick Roy Behind Avs' Bench
2008-05-16 15:47:00 According to Adrian Dater, Patrick Roy has decided that he is not actually interested in coaching the Colorado Avalanche next season. His sons still play for the Remparts and he'd like to see them through their major junior careers: But Roy said he does want to coach in the NHL at some point, probably when his younger son, Frederick, leaves junior hockey. "When Fred is done, it will be different," Roy said. "But this is OK with me for now." Frederick Roy, 17, a center, played five games for the Remparts this past season but is expected to play a larger role next season. Roy's older son, Jonathan, 19, has played goalie for the Remparts the last two seasons. So speculation on that particular subject can finally cease. For what it's worth, at the end of the article Dater casts Kevin Dineen and Todd McLellan as the top two candidates, with Pat Burns and Ron Wilson as more experienced but likely secondary. Who really knows, though? Dineen and McLellan have tea... More About: Bench , Candidate

They're Not Dead Yet
2008-05-15 17:06:00 Thank god somebody finally beat the Red Wings, if only once. After helping the Wings win nine straight playoff games (two against Nashville, four against the Avs, and three against the Stars), Dallas decided they didn't quite want to go out in a sweep and won last night 3-1. Chris Osgood, despite being the best goalie of all time, a sure bet for the Conn Smythe trophy and an obvious first-ballot Hall of Famer, allowed three goals on 22 shots. Marty Turco, the whipping boy of Stars and Wings fans alike, put on a clinic by stopping 33 of 34 shots. It's about damned time, Turco. Obviously, the odds are still stacked against the Stars. As everyone has already heard a million times when one team goes up three games to none, the last team to overcome a deficit like that was the 1975 New York Islanders. I'm thinking 33 years is long enough to wait for a repeat of that come-from-behind insanity. The Flyers, on the other hand, are done for. They were... More About: Dead

Galiardi Signs, Coach Search Continues
2008-05-14 17:02:00 Two bits of info today: The Avalanche announced the signing of forward prospect TJ Galiardi to a new contract (really, the Avs need two TJs?), but, as MHH member Jori reports at Avs Prospects, the press release comes nearly two weeks after he actually signed. Maybe it just got lost in the shuffle with all this coaching vacancy business. Speaking of coaching vacancies, Adrian Dater has weighed in on the feedback he received regarding Patrick Roy's possible appearance as the top dog behind the Colorado bench. His verdict on whether or not it's a good idea is a resounding "maybe." Patrick Roy is also a very high-profile, opinionated man. That doesn’t quite fit the Avs’ M.O. for coaches. But the reason why I think he does and should have a shot at getting the job is he’s paid some dues already in Quebec, he only cares about one thing - winning - and knows the organization’s blueprint on how things are done. But has he paid enough dues? Maybe no... More About: Search , Signs , Coach

The New Platform Looms Large
2008-05-13 18:41:00 The time for the switch to the new platform is fast upon us. We've finally received word that Mile High Hockey will be transfered to the new, fancy version of SB Nation on Tuesday, May 20th. That's one week from today for those of you without a calendar. So what will this mean? It will mean that next Tuesday the site will look totally different when you stop by for your morning visit. The URL will remain the same, however. You will see a post on the front page detailing all of the changes and the steps you will have to take to create a new user account and "claim" your old one (so that your old comments and diary posts appear under the new account---even if the name hasn't changed). Trust me, this is going to be very cool for me, for Mike and DD, and for you as visitors and members of this here blog. You'll even get your own avatar! Woo! Again, if you're not familiar with what it will look like, check out other fine SB Nation blogs... More About: Platform , Large

Ron Wilson Jumped The Shark, Get It?
2008-05-13 05:24:00 Since anyone and everyone that is or has been a coach in hockey at any level appears to be a candidate for the Colorado Avalanche head coaching position, add one more name: Ron Wilson . The Shark s just canned him. Ron Wilson is a good coach, but he's also aggressive and belligerent (if the reports are true) and he's a notorious choker in the playoffs. I have a feeling he won't quite top Pat Burns in the "who would you rather metaphorically make out with" competition being held among all the hot coaches currently on the market. ADDENDUM: Also in the news, this from the World Wide Leader in Sports: The Flyers are losing so bad they're beating themselves.

Getting To Know You: Pat Burns
More articles from this author:2008-05-12 22:02:00 So who is Pat Burns , and why are some of us at MHH wetting ourselves at the prospect of the Colorado Avalanche hiring him as the head coach? Pat Burns is notable for a number of things. First, he's the only coach to have won the Jack Adams trophy (best coach) with three different teams. He also won the Stanley Cup with the New Jersey Devils in 2003, his first year with that organization. He was forced to leave coaching after the 2003-04 season ended because of a cancer diagnosis. Burns has remained with the Devils organization as a scout/player development guy, and is currently an assistant coach with the Canadian team at the World Championship tournament. Now that his cancer is in remission, he's made it clear that he is interested in a new head coaching job in the NHL. Now, what kind of coach is Pat Burns? He's most well-known for his Cup win with the Devils, and the Devils are most well-known for their perfection of the neutral zone trap and th... 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 |
