Super 14 2008, Force vs Crusaders score, review
2008-03-09 18:23:00
Western Force 24 - Canterbury Crusaders 29 Despite conceding 17 unanswered points in the second half to lose the match, the Force stepped up to the plate today and in many ways outplayed this champion Crusader outfit. Gone were the dropped passes and turnovers. Back was the pace and width on the ball. Noticeable was the complete transformation of the back-row; all three (including Fava with... ....follow link for more

Super 14 2008 - Reds vs Stormers score, review
2008-03-09 00:09:00
Reds 16 - Stormers 34 If you're a reds fan, this season is currently going horribly, horribly wrong, again. I'll start with the positives (not so easy). The scrum was good, no very good. Besting the stormers at a couple of key moments. Also, despite playing behind a team as it implodes, Berrick Barnes is still an obvious talent, tonight for example lobbing over 2 drop goals from distance and... ....follow link for more

Andrew "Roy" Symonds vs Streaker Video
2008-03-04 16:27:00
Today Australia might have lost the one day series against India, but found a new number 8 for the Wallabies. Here's the video of Roy laying out a streaker at the GABBA. I love how it seems to be just part of the usual gardening the pitch routine.... ....follow link for more

Super 14 reviews and scores: Highlanders vs Waratahs, Lions vs Force, Brumb
2008-03-01 18:43:00
How do you have almost 70% possession, 60% territory, make the opposition tackle twice as much as you, have the double their line breaks, and only win by two points? No this isn't a joke, but the script for both the Waratahs and the Force this week, and familiar for both sides the week before as well. Both teams would create stretches of great attacking play that made even the kiwi and saffa... ....follow link for more

Super 14 Scores and reviews: Cheetahs vs Force, Chiefs vs Waratahs, Brumbie
2008-02-23 00:37:00
Here's a rundown of this Aussie Super 14 games as I saw them. Cheetahs 15 vs Western Force 16 This was truly a bizarre game. If you'd ignored the scoreline but watched the stats, you would have sworn the Force would have won this by 20 points. 35 minutes in they'd had 70% possession and the territory to go with it, but no points. By the end of the game the Cheetahs had made 140 odd tackles to... ....follow link for more

Big Jerry gets owned
2008-02-21 19:59:00
Here's the clip of Beau Robinson making Jerry Collins his bitch during the weekend's Waratahs vs Hurricanes game. As it's often Big Jerry taking prison wives, it's nice to see a bit of payback. Suffice to say that he didn't play much more of a role for the rest of the match. It'll be interesting to see how the 23 year old Beau develops. ....follow link for more

Early thoughts on the new ELVs
2008-02-18 22:10:00
How many games of rugby have you watched or played? I bet enough that you could have had a guess at the outcome of simply converting some full-penalties to free kicks. The beauty of sport however, and especially what some would call an over-complicated sport like rugby union, is that it has the habit of throwing up a few surprises. And so as the first weeks of the 2008 Super 14 roll out under... ....follow link for more

Super 14 Week 1 reviews and scores
2008-02-16 19:41:00
By christ it was good to have Super rugby back on the idiot box, even if there was a week where a combination of rustiness and ELV naivety created some pretty headless chicken rugby at times (more on that in another post). But here's a run down on the games. Waratahs 20 vs Hurricanes 3 On balance, this would have been a pleasing hit out for Link Mckenzie and his men. The pack created good... ....follow link for more

Kurtley Beale vs Cory Jane - slapdown
2008-02-16 18:59:00
Here's a clip of the hilarious unintentional charge down that Cory Jane made with his face on Kurtley Beale's clearance kick in the Waratah's vs Hurricanes S14 game yesterday. Points to him for shaking it off, but if you've got the name of a female porn star, pencil beard and a mullet then I guess you learn to toughen up. Ouch ....follow link for more
Super 14 2008 preview
2008-02-13 07:48:00
It's been a long old wait since last October, but at last we get some good southern hemisphere rugby back on the telly. What's intriguing about this years competition though is trying to pick the key runners and riders, because this year there are a couple of extra factors in play. To start with, there are plenty of players who have pissed off up here to Europe and are therefore out of the... ....follow link for more

Experimental Law Variations (ELVs) in Super 14 2008
2008-02-12 08:01:00
Below are the ELVs being adopted by Super 14 in 2008 . On reading them there doesn't seem to be that much that's too drastically different, except for offside at the tackle, which by the sounds of things really piles the advantage onto the attacking side once they've made a break, as all defenders behind that tackle are now offside, making scramble defence a hell of a lot tougher. Also will the... ....follow link for more

Six-nations scores and round up - week two
2008-02-09 19:12:00
France 26 vs Ireland 21 This one turned out to be a cracker. Continuing their form from last week, the French back 3 are looking the most dangerous in Europe and perhaps further afield. The whole team is re-discovering that French quality of backs running from deep, creating space when given half a chance and then exploiting it with pure, old fashioned gas. The best example was from Vincent... ....follow link for more

Six-nations scores and round up - week one
2008-02-04 08:26:00
Bridging the gap nicely before the Super 14s is a little competition up here called the six nations, you might have heard of it. Anyway, having caught some of it this weekend, here's what I saw. England 19 - Wales 26 I was a bee's foik from switching off this match from about 30 minutes in, figuring that at any time the poms, having smashed the boyos up front and starting to make line breaks,... ....follow link for more

End of year tour gets bigger
2008-01-30 03:46:00
Not only are the Wallabies playing the ABs in a test in HK at the end of the year (will this be a tri-nations decider?), but other unusual fixtures are abounding. From the Australian: O'Neill revealed yesterday that British 2012 Olympic officials had requested the Wallabies extend their November campaign by an extra week to allow them to schedule a match against the Barbarians at Wembley on... ....follow link for more

Howard lays on the tough love
2008-01-27 08:46:00
When Pat Howard was put in charge of the High Performance Unit at the ARU, I'm not sure anyone saw him taking on the hard-ass chief negotiator role. But it looks like Pat, on behalf of John O'Neil, has taken up the mantle with gusto. The loss of St Latho in December, Vickerman this week and Mortlock in the pipeline has certainly put him in the limelight and predictably the player's agents... ....follow link for more

Aussie Robbie ruffles a few feathers
2008-01-23 20:59:00
In the last couple of days there have been the first glimpses of the new Deans regime direction and inevitably noses are already being put out of joint. The first idea - that the Aussie S14 coaches should all play a role in Wallaby selection - seems eminently sensible; who else will be closer to these players while Deans is still across the dutch? This also gets the next most important... ....follow link for more

Early news on 2008 Wallaby Euro Tour
2008-01-11 09:13:00
With great excitement I stumbled across the preliminary Euro pean tour outline in this Fox article, key details of which are: ONE hundred years after the first Wallabies - or as they very nearly were, the Rabbits - ventured to Britain, the Australian team is set to end its northern hemisphere campaign with a match against the Barbarians. Australian Rugby Union acting chief executive Matt... ....follow link for more

Monkey Business
2008-01-09 08:29:00
It might not be strictly about rugby, but if you're an Aussie rugby fan there's a 98% chance of you also follow the Baggie Greens. So I thought I'd spray a few words about the India/Australia cricket kerfuffle. First off , you've got to admit that India didn't get the rub of the green in what was some uncharacteristically shoddy umpiring at some pretty piss poor times in the last test. Symonds... ....follow link for more

Say it enough, maybe it'll come true
2007-12-19 22:25:00
So I'm scanning the TimesOnline looking for some sort of rationale on why the poms have given Ashton a pay-as-you-go 12 month contract, when I stumbled across this remarkable piece of self-delusion: That try will stay on Mark Cueto's mind forever The England winger talks to Times Online in an exclusive Q&A You were denied that try by the television referee in the World Cup final. Does it... ....follow link for more

Latho, the canning of the ARC, & Yoda lives on
2007-12-19 08:55:00
There have been a few stories in the last couple of days that haven't exactly painted the ARU as a caring / sharing organisation. First off, rumors started circulating that Chris Latham, one of the only 2 wallabies that would have made a World Cup 15, has signed with Worcester in the UK for the northern hemisphere 08/09. This means he'll play the S14 season, with the Bledisloe game in Brisbane... ....follow link for more

Learning to deal with Deans
2007-12-12 17:58:00
With the appointment of Robbie Deans as the next Wallaby coach drawing inexorably closer, the reality of having a Kiwi calling the shots for the Aussie team doesn't seem quite so bad. Amongst all the windbagging that's gone on throughout the coach selection process, three opinions of late have made a big impact; from respected voices in the game, and then from Mat Rogers. Big-hitter 1 was no... ....follow link for more

Henry gets ABs....Deans for us?
2007-12-07 00:02:00
While I'm not convinced it's the right idea, it looks like John O'Neils christmas present has come early as the ABs have reappointed Ming the Merciless: GRAHAM Henry was reappointed All Blacks coach today, the New Zealand Rugby Union said, despite overseeing the team's worst ever World Cup performance this year. Henry, 61, coached the All Blacks to 42 wins and just six losses after first... ....follow link for more

Barbarians vs South Africa: result, score, review
2007-12-01 17:51:00
Classy Barbars 22 World Chump B team 5 So many times an all star Barbarian team has disappointed through poor defence and lateral attack, but not today. Almost to a man the Barbars played their hearts out and showed this Springbok team to be out of ideas. The first half was a cracker, the Corinthians scoring two great tries, and probably spilling another three, going in at the break 15-5... ....follow link for more

Where to play Matt Giteau?
2007-11-19 17:19:00
Whoever the next coach of the Wallabies is, he'll have two very different selection dilemmas; where to find a competitive front row, and where to play Matt Giteau. Of the two, I know which problem is more likely to keep him awake at night. Nevertheless, a few rumbles in the press over the last couple of days could mean that the saga of where to play Kid Dynamite could rumble on. According to... ....follow link for more

A convenient pain in the neck
2007-11-10 09:36:00
The pong of eau de bullshit still hangs heavily over this Wallaby coach selection, and I'm not talking about the wheelbarrow loads that Alan Gloria Jones has been generating. Yesterday the Head Wallaby Coach interviews took place, with the full ARU selection panel, oh just minus the CEO John O'Neil! Obviously more than a slight problem, which performance director Pat Howard admitted: Australian... ....follow link for more

Australia Coach Selection Shenanigans
2007-11-01 07:16:00
The Wallabies coach selection process, which seems to have been going for about 6 months so far, has certainly thrown in a few twists and turns this past week with the approach of the application deadline. The biggest non surprise has been the Deans candidacy fizzling out. O'Neil and the ARU cocked-up in publicly naming a favourite, especially so early in the process. It's no coincidence that... ....follow link for more

Report from the Shaky Isles
2007-10-29 21:21:00
All together now Article by Sportsfreak Immediately following the World Cup humiliation, everything seemed straight forward. An already disgruntled rugby public due to a non-event of a Super 14 had to put up with an early yet inevitable exit from the World Cup by a team coached who had always said this is how he was to be judged. A pompous Independent Inquiry was announced, but this initially... ....follow link for more
