Japan vs Australia A - review
2008-06-09 23:16:00
Having finally seen the game from yesterday, here are a few quick thoughts on the Aussie A vs Japan match. It was a scrappy, stop start game with a lot of kicking from the home side especially. As such a good advert for the ELVs. Australia A looked to play fast, almost exclusively through the 10/12 channel, with inside balls galore. This pretty much worked purely because the Cherry Blossoms... ....follow link for more

Return of Captain Caveman - French Tour Squad for Australia
2008-06-09 15:25:00
France announced the squad to go to Australia for the two tests this month. With the top French sides out due to the ongoing domestic comp (rediculous) there will be 11 new caps from the 26 man party and the return of CAPTAIN CAVEMAN Sébastien Chabal. We haven't seen much of the legend since the world cup so it will be good to see the big fella running out again. Unfortunately he'll have a lot... ....follow link for more

Australia A vs Japan Pacific Nations Cup Score
2008-06-08 15:28:00
I haven't seen the game yet, but here's a write up. From what I heard Tahu looked pretty good at 12. AUSTRALIA A fought off a second-half rally by Asian champions Japan to post a 42-21 win with six tries in their opening game of the Pacific Nations Cup. The second-tier Australia national team led 28-3 at the break after running in four tries, all converted by Mark Gerrard, while the Brave... ....follow link for more

Australia U20s vs Canada Score & Review
2008-06-07 09:23:00
Australia 81-12 Canada by Duncan Wood Australia laid down an impressive marker for the rest of the IRB Junior World Championship as they overwhelmed a plucky Canadian team 81-12 on a cool, dry afternoon at Rodney Parade in Newport on Friday. The win was based on a significant power advantage up front with Canada simply unable to regularly secure their own possession and backed up by slick... ....follow link for more

Australia A vs Japan side
2008-06-06 08:20:00
Australia A play Japan on Sunday. Below is the team. Of note is Tahu finally starting game of Rugby Union. It's also at 12 where, of the 20 minutes he's had on a rugby field I think he might have spent 2. Also the Qld scrum half that journos keep wanging on about is getting a run at 10 outside Josh Holmes. Some good names, would be interesting to watch. Australia A: Mark Gerrard, Matt... ....follow link for more

Aussie Robbie Deans Interview on Inside Rugby
2008-06-05 16:40:00
If you're not sick of hearing all about the Wallabies' glorious new coach Aussie Robbie Deans, then here's a great clip put Edited by Moses over at Go The Tahs from Inside Rugby on Fox. While there's not too much in it that's earth shattering, I guess it's interesting to actually hear the guy speak rather than just hold aloft the Super 14 trophy. The point that he's a 'hands on' coach comes... ....follow link for more

"Maw! Paw! Come quick - Robbie's gawn!"
2008-06-03 21:28:00
Post by Sportsfreak (who's a Kiwi by the way). When it was mooted that Robbie Deans was off to coach Australia, the general feeling was that if he was not wanted by NZ rugby, then good luck to him. Most rugby followers wished him well, and whilst they admired his coaching record, they were disappointed to see him go. Yet there were also a number of very strange reactions. And the strangest one... ....follow link for more

Wallabies 2008 - the dawn of a new era?
2008-06-02 22:30:00
Because of what happened in a certain quarter final, our last memory of the Wallabies is a pretty bleak one. But that overpowers what were a few shoots of optimism starting to bloom for Australia. With the arrival of Aussie Robbie and the announcement today of the Australian squads, you can feel this optimism surging again, but far more deservedly so. First of all there's Aussie Robbie (I see... ....follow link for more

2008 Wallabies Squad announced
2008-06-02 08:05:00
The 30 man train on squad for the Wallabies 2008 (list below) was announced by Aussie Robbie Deans earlier today. Apparently he had no hand in selection (due to his NZ contract still being in place), but having taken note of our Poll, there aren't that many contentious decisions that weren't forced by injury or the looming U20s world cup. In the forwards Richard Brown gets a deserved nod for his... ....follow link for more

Australia A 2008 squad & fixtures
2008-06-02 07:59:00
Some good names here, and there would be more if it weren't for the U20 RWC happening this month in Wales. There isn't an obvious shape to the team though, and it'll be very interesting to see that back line shape up though, especially without a recognised 10 from the S14 this year - I guess Halangahu (Hangers) fills that spot. Forwards: Al Campbell (Brumbies), Mitchell Chapman (Brumbies), Pek... ....follow link for more

Crusaders vs Waratahs Super 14 2008 Final review & video highlights
2008-05-31 17:48:00
Princes of darkness 20 - Tahs 12 During the week Mark Hammett commented that, in terms of intensity, this was going to be a test match and he was spot on. These two teams went hammer and tongs, both refusing to be intimidated by what was on the line, and the sense of occasion. In the end it was the Crusaders ability to play rugby in the half of the field they chose to, through their vast... ....follow link for more

Aussie teams Super 14 round-up
2008-05-28 22:46:00
Come Monday next week, no-one's going to give a rats arse about the Super 14 2008, so while there's still some legs in it, how has it all worked out for the Aussie states and what does it look like for 2009? Overall In short, better than last year, but far from great. Three of the four teams were in the bottom half and the Brumbies and Force actually slipped spots in the ladder. While the Tahs... ....follow link for more

Crusaders vs Waratahs Super 14 Final Preview & Master Plan
2008-05-28 15:29:00
OK, the stats aren't in their favour, but can the Tahs win on Saturday? Hell yes. And here's how: Defence The Tahs have the most offensive defence going in the 2008 Super 14. Their line speed and power in the tackle has been outstanding - witness South Africas finest breaking down and blubbing at the SFS last weekend. As it happens, this is a good attack point vs the Crusaders , they don't like... ....follow link for more

Waratahs vs Sharks Super 14 Semi Final Video Highlights
2008-05-25 23:04:00
You can read a full review here Watching it again, there were a couple of bits that stand out: How well the Tahs finished tries 2 and 3. Sure, they were great positions, but how often do you see guys take it on too far or passes miss the man in those situations? SNK's golded ball and Burgess' ruck clearance were keyRocky bloody Elsom. I don't think I've seen him have such a great game since the... ....follow link for more

Australian Under 20 Squad looking mighty fine
2008-05-25 19:14:00
I'll admit that I don't usually pay too much attention to things like the IRB Junior World Championships, but this one's got me interested. Perhaps it's the stretch of the talent pool in Australia the past few seasons, but we've ended up with a 26 man squad that has 10 Super 14 capped players in it. Amongst those 10 are few names that have shown some serious class in Super rugby regardless of... ....follow link for more

Tahs Shred Sharks
2008-05-24 19:21:00
Waratahs 28 - Shorks 13 Someone took the Waratahs of 2008, condensed them all down, wrung out the pure essence, poured it into a bottle, and then served it up to the Sharks at the SFS last night. ?Eau de Tah ?08? was just too powerful for the men from Durban, and they literally fell apart in its presence. At the core of Eau de Tah ?08 is the most offensive defence in the Southern Hemisphere.... ....follow link for more

Inside Rugby 2008 Super 14 Awards
2008-05-22 14:23:00
For those who don't know, Inside Rugby is the magazine show that Foxsports (pay per view) runs in Australia. They've decided to hand out a few awards for the Super 14 season so far. Interesting how they didn't wait till after the finals - what does that tell you about expectations for Australian rugby? Super 14 Semi Final Previews
2008-05-21 23:22:00
After one of the closest finishes of the regular season in Super 14 rugby, we find ourselves with what could be two cracking semi's: Crusaders vs Hurricanes in Christchurch and the Waratahs vs Sharks in Sydney. Reds vs Waratahs Super 14: score & review, video highlights
2008-05-17 13:44:00
Queensland Reds 11 - NSW Waratahs 18 It wasn't pretty, they got the better of the reffing and thankfully the Hurricanes slipped up in Auckland, but today's professional win by the Waratahs has ensured some respectability for Australia's 2008 Super 14 showing with a home semi booked in Sydney. Yet again the back row proved the Tahs most effective attacking weapon, Waugh setting up Mums try with a... ....follow link for more

Looking at the poll on the right it isn't just me who's been impressed by the guy, and here's a little snippet from the Blues game which gives a clue as to why. Burgess played 4 seasons under Gregan before going back to Sydney and getting in line behind Sheehan and Valentine by playing club rugby. 2008 Wallaby Selections - have your say
2008-05-13 19:57:00
Poor old Aussie Robbie Deans has been expressly forbidden to even think about Australian rugby until the Crusaders have won this years Super 14. To help him out I thought I'd package up pure selection gold and email it to him, so that he can concentrate on more important things, like getting the fuck out of Christchurch, ASAP. Stormers vs Waratahs: Score and Review
2008-05-11 07:32:00
Stormers 13 - Waratahs 13 When the Super 14 semi-finals loom, you can always count on the Waratahs to find new ways to bewilder. So on a night with comedy rain coming down (now that's a power shower) Link McKenzie decides to stick with his masterstroke of benching the one guy in the Tahs who can kind of kick (Sam Norton-Knight) and instead stick the out and out winger Tuqiri at the back. Hurricanes vs Western Force: video highlights & score

Hurricanes 21 - Force 10 Despite having nothing really to play for, solid defence from the Force managed to restrict the Canes to 2 tries, which could well prove important from a Waratahs home semi perspective. In only his second match in Super 14, the 17 year old James O'Connor had his hands full playing opposite the speeding tree trunk, Ma'a Nonu. Here's how that worked out The... ....follow link for more

By the numbers
2008-05-08 09:51:00
Of the various fantasy super 14 competitions that have been running, the one I started in this year was the Foxsports version. It's way too late to join (have a go next year, maybe I'll start a league), but what I thought was interesting was looking at how individual players have done from a points ranking perspective. After all, the way the whole thing works is to try and convert what players... ....follow link for more

Stormers vs Brumbies; Super 14 video highlights
2008-05-05 20:58:00
Stormers 20 - Brumbies 10 Gaping chasms in the Brumbies mid-field ushered the Stormers through for their first try, and from then on the harder the Brumbies pushed to get back in the game, the more it blew up in their faces. The break that DeVilliers made on the tape is a perfect example of what I'm talking about, but how the fuck "look at me" Walsh managed to construe it into a penalty try is... ....follow link for more

Western Force vs Chiefs; video highlights & score
2008-05-05 18:15:00
Western Force 22 - Chiefs 21 This game was the one highlight in an otherwise pretty dismal super 14 weekend for Aussie teams, losing 3 out of 4 games. Having watched the game, no one really blew me away from the Force's point of view. It was a pretty solid team effort, especially in the last 10 minutes when it turned into wacky races rugby. The 17 year old, James O'Connor did nothing to... ....follow link for more
