Murali to miss next two ODIs---Daily NewsChris DhambarageCRICKET: Sri Lanka who are trailing 1-2 in the five match series suffers a major blow as ace spinner Muttiah Muralitharan was ruled out of the crucial fourth and fifth one day internationals against England at the R. Premadasa stadium this week.Sri Lanka are faced with a must win situation in their remaining two games after going down to England in successive outings at the Rangiri Dambulla International stadium last week. Sri Lanka's solitary victory in the series was recorded in the first one day international where they triumphed by a massive margin of 119 runs. But England have bounced back in style by registering back to back victories and now they in line for their first ever one day international series win on Sri Lankan oil. 2007-10-08 22:39:00
Atapattu was Test captain for three years until December 2005 Former Sri Lanka captain Marvan Atapattu has rejected the opportunity of a return in the two-Test series in Australia starting on 8 November. Selectors met with Atapattu, who has not played at international level since February, but he declined their offer. Jehan Mubarak and Thilan Samaraweera are included, with Tillakaratne Dilshan and Malinda Warnapura omitted. Fast bowler Chanaka Welagedera, 26, earns a chance after impressing in domestic action recently. Star spinner Muttiah Muralitharan is expected to recover sufficiently from the bicep injury that kept him out of the opening matches of the one-day series against England. The mercurial 35-year-old, who had his action called into question on previous visits to Australia, needs only eight wickets to level Shane Warne's Test record of 708 victims. Sri Lanka squad: Mahela Jayawardene (capt), Kumar Sangakkara (wkt), Sanath Jayasuriya, Upul T...

Victory puts India back in series
2007-10-08 21:58:00
FOURTH ONE-DAY INTERNATIONAL, Chandigarh:India 291-4 (50 overs) bt Australia 283-7 (50 overs) by eight runs Tendulkar was not at his fluent best and could have fallen early Sachin Tendulkar hit a record 84th ODI fifty as India beat Australia by eight runs in their fourth one-day match. On a slow turning pitch, Tendulkar (79) hung on to provide a platform Mahendra Dhoni (50no) and Robin Uthappa (30no) built on as India amassed 291-4. Matthew Hayden hit a blistering 92 in reply and Andrew Symonds smacked 75 but wickets tumbled as the scoring slowed. Australia finished on 283-7 to cut their lead in the seven-match series to 2-1 with the next game on Thursday. It was just what the series and India needed after being outplayed in the previous matches, but they were again under pressure in the early stages as Brett Lee swung the ball at pace in an impressive opening spell.Tendulkar, who had...

New fast bowler Welagedera in Sri Lanka squad for Australian tour

New fast bowler Welagedera in Sri Lanka squad for Australian tourDilshan dumped and Warnapura ignoredMiddle order batsman Tillekaratne Dilshan has finally faced the selectors’ axe for a poor show over the past couple of months while promising batsman Malinda Warnapura has been given a raw deal in the formation of Sri Lanka’s Test squad for this month’s tour of Australia.Dilshan will not be part of the 16-man squad for the tour of Australia after failing to come to grips with rival bowlers during the past two years while he averaged 34.65 which is below par to compete against the best.He has failed to score a century in his last 15 games and his place has been taken by 31-year old Thilan Samaraweera. But a surprise omission from the line-up is left-handed opening batsman Malinda Warnapura who is also capable of playing in the middle order batting.Warnapura replaced an injured Upul Tharanga in the last home series against Bangladesh in July this year and scored an inspiring knock...

Animals magic in Dambulla where England- Sri Lanka Matches are being held
2007-10-05 22:01:00
Animals magic in Dambulla - BBC.UK There is a bit of an animal theme developing on the Dambulla leg of this Sri Lanka tour: bats flitting around the hotel corridors, monkeys stealing fruit from the players rooms, cobras lurking in the undergrowth and dogs invading the outfield. The dogs probably feel quite at home though, knowing the England team is captained by a Colly! It is a fascinating location for an international cricket stadium. The backdrop is a lush, dense jungle, with Dambulla lake flanking the ground on one side and Dambulla rock rising majestically in the distance on the other. Cows graze on the wiry grass on the lake shore, able to wander right up to the practise nets if they please and when darkness suddenly falls and the floodlights are switched on, there is no glow from orange street lights to pollute the stark blackness of the night sky. The 60 acre site itself is owned by the Rangiri Dambulla Temple, and while the stadium was built in only 167 days to ...

Whatmore up for India Academy job Whatmore has coached Sri Lanka and Bangladesh The India Cricket Board say they are in talks with ex-Bangladesh and Sri Lanka coach Dav Whatmore about the role of director of their National Academy. He has also been tipped to replace Bennett King as West Indies coach. But an India Cricket Board spokesman confirmed that Whatmore was in talks with their Academy chief Ravi Shastri. Whatmore guided Sri Lanka to World Cup triumph in 1996 and helped minnows Bangladesh reach the second round in the Caribbean this year after a shock win over India. He quit his post as coach on 29 May and has since been linked with the vacant coaching rol...

As tensions grow in an escalating war of words between the rival camps, Australia can take a 2-0 lead in Hyderabad with four matches remaining. Ponting is fit after a hamstring injury and Australia will also welcome back left-arm seamer Nathan Bracken, granted leave to attend the birth of his child. Ponting replaces Brad Hodge, but it is less clear who makes way for Bracken. Mitchell Johnson impressed in the Kochi win, but if he is retained in the side Australia would probably have to drop Brett Lee. The build-up to the third game has b...

2007-10-04 22:03:00
Injured Flintoff out until 2008 All-rounder Flintoff had a third ankle operation in June England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff is highly unlikely to play again in 2007 as he battles to overcome a worrying ankle problem, BBC Sport understands. He has had further scans to assess the injury and is waiting for the results before deciding what action to take. Flintoff, 29, had a third operation in June in a bid to get himself fully fit but is still in pain when he bowls. England will not risk Flintoff, who had hoped to play in December's Test series in Sri Lanka, until he is 100% right. "We would love to have him in the squad but we won't risk Andrew in the Test matches," said coach Peter Moores. England's second tour of the winter will see them leave for New Zealand on 28 January for two Twenty20 games, five one-day...

Tie-breaker ODI series Lanka to capitalise on Flintoff’s absence By Sa’adi ThawfeeqSri Lanka is to exploit the absence of Andrew Flintoff and capitalise on it fully when they take on England in a five-match one-day international series starting at the Rangiri Dambulla Stadium tomorrow.Flintoff was forced to pull out of the Sri Lanka series and return home following a troublesome left ankle. The England all-rounder also missed out the last one-day series played between the two countries in 2006 where England lost at home 5-0.“Andrew is a top class all-rounder. To have him in the side gives England more balance in their attack because he is a batting all-rounder who bowls really well,” Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene told ‘The Nation’.“With him England’s combination is much better. Without him they will have to go for a different combination. He is a match-winner and his absence is obviously an advantage for us,” he said.Jayawardene pointed out that al...

Warne vs. Mural i debate rages again in Australia - Daily MirrorBy Daniel MacDonaldMuttiah Muralitharan is poised to become the world's highest Test cricket wicket-taker, but greats of the sport still refuse to acknowledge the Sri Lankan as the game's best bowler of all time. The 35-year-old has baffled batsmen for 16 years and needs just nine wickets to surpass Australian Shane Warne's record of 708. The controversial off-spinner is likely to do so this summer, in one of two Tests against Australia. But if former Australian skipper Mark Taylor was a selector, he said he would have no hesitation in picking Warne over Muralitharan. Retired wicketkeeper Ian Healy would do the same, as would current captain Ricky Ponting and retired fast-bowler Glenn McGrath. All have played with Warne and against Murali. So even though the Sri Lankan will eventually take the most Test wickets of any international player, why will he live in the shadow of Australia's 'Sheik of Tweak'?"His career lacks...

COLOMBO (AFP) — Sri Lanka's tsunami-hit cricket stadium at Galle is embroiled in a heritage row as it races to host the final Test of the England tour in December, officials said.Jayananda Warnaweera, the curator overseeing its reconstruction, said conservationists had objected to a new building at the stadium that could obstruct views of Galle's 17th century Dutch Fort, a heritage site.He added that he was worried about meeting the reconstruction deadline."We may not be able to meet the targeted November 15 deadline," Warnaweera told AFP, adding that work had also been slowed by continuous rain. The Third Test against England is due to start at the southern coastal city's ground on December 18.The Galle International Stadium , which sits in the shadow of the huge fort walls, was devastated by the December 2004 Indian ocean tsunami which killed an estimated 31,000 people on the island.Sri Lanka Cricket recommenced construction of the stadium after an initial government order to m...

Shah Rukh Khan spoke to CT after the euphoria had sunk in.His trip wasn’t planned. The BCCI and Sharad Pawar had invited him. It was kind of them, said SRK. Lay to rest the ghosts of Africa - Sanath Jayasuriya
2007-09-26 22:18:00
Lay to rest the ghosts of Africa With happy experiences of the 2007 World Cup fresh in our minds-even if we lost at the final hurdle, few would have faulted us if we had great expectations about the Twenty-20 World Cup in South Africa. After all, innovative batting has always been Sri Lanka’s strength in the shorter versions of the game and if we had a weakness, it would have been in the bowling and the Twenty-20 format appeared to have been tailor made for the style of game that we play. But as events last week went horribly wrong, it was not to be and we found ourselves making an early exit from the tournament and on a flight to Colombo.I believe things began to go wrong in the game against Pakistan. It was a key match and Pakistan were minus quite a few of their established stars for a variety of reasons. In terms of experience we clearly had the advantage but it was up to us to convert it to a win that day-- a win, with a game to play against Bangladesh that would have meant alm...

The new threat to cricket
2007-09-26 22:12:00
The new threat to cricket---The NationAny new product put out on the shelves will always be reviewed with a great deal of circumspection initially.
