Football/Track and Field Facility at Terra Nova HS (Pacifica)
2008-03-21 18:08:00 The amount of all-weather Track and Field facilities in the San Mateo County will be going up a substantial amount in the next year or so. Starting on April 1st (no not a joke), they will close all the San Mateo County schools that have dirt facilities and a makeover will take place as they convert those tracks to all weather facilities. Some of the schools that will be getting an upgrade, going south to north, will be Hillsdale HS, Aragon HS, Mills HS, my high school, Capuchino HS and Terra Nova HS.The following article details the process Terra Nova HS (and their athletic director) have taken in making a new state of the art facility a reality.•Vision of new Tiger Stadium getting clearer More About: Football , Track and Field

Los Gatos community gathers around German pole vaulter to help him excel
2008-03-20 03:49:00 By Marianne Lucchesi HamiltonFor Bay Area News GroupIn the past couple of years, Nico Weiler has done a lot of flying. He's hopped several planes between his homeland of German y and California, and has visited New York, Idaho and various other states. But mostly he's flown on his own power - as a world-champion pole-vaulter and member of the Los Gatos High School track and field team.Weiler is a senior, and in his second year as a student at LGHS. He followed in the footsteps of his older brother Sasha, who also came from Germany to spend a year as a member of the Wildcats' pole-vaulting squad. How the Weiler brothers ended up in Los Gatos is a story in itself. In 2003, LGHS track coach Brandon Vance was attending the National Pole -Vault Summit (Vance is also a former Wildcat, in 1994 posting the team's prior best mark of 16 feet, 4 inches, then vaulting 17 feet as a Fresno State student). At the summit, Vance heard his name being called over the public address system. "I went to... More About: Community , Excel

Nice Article in the Tahoe Daily Tribune
2008-03-06 18:09:00 STHS senior receives cross country scholarship to Division I schoolThere is a short list of reasons why people run: Some run to lose weight or release stress; others run to compete, prepare themselves for another sport or enjoy the beauty of an area.Watching Kate Lambdin run, there is no hiding the fact that she loves the simple exercise that is the foundation for almost all other sports. That genuine love of running has become the South Tahoe High senior's ticket to covering some of the cost of her higher education. Lambdin, a four-year all-state runner for the Vikings, has signed a letter of intent to attend San Jose State University and will compete for the Spartans' women's cross country team next fall.To read the rest of the article, check out the following link:•Lambdin knows way to San Jose More About: Daily , Article , Nice , Tribune

Matt Duffy makes college decision (in his own words).
2008-02-28 03:41:00 I have verbally committed and have also been granted admission to Brown University for the fall of 2008. The choice to move away from home and attend school on the east coast involved many factors. The main thing I looked for was a place that I would feel comfortable without running. I know I will spend a lot of time and energy studying in addition to pursuing my athletic dreams. Before I committed, I ensured that I could be successful athletically there and that academically I wouldn't fall through the cracks, the 97% graduation rate cleared me of any second thoughts I may have had. Another thing I had to clear was financial aid, in the beginning of the process I received a pre-read of my financial aid and they estimated that I would have to pay about 50% of the projected cost of college(tuition, room and board, books, fees, travel and personal). At that point I had almost given up on attending an Ivy League school but I decided to write an appeal letter which resulted in me only ... More About: College , Words , Decision , Matt , Duffy

Nice article about Petaluma coach Jim Lynch
2008-02-22 07:47:00 Paramedic Jim Lynch is a track and cross-country coach at Petaluma HighThursday, Feb 21, 2008By JOHN JACKSONARGUS-COURIER STAFF WRITERIn his work Jim Lynch saves lives; in his avocation he teaches life. Lynch is a paramedic who doubles as cross country and track coach at Petaluma High School. In his coaching mode, he teaches as much about the importance of hard work, integrity and teamwork as he does about technique. To say his approach has been successful would be an understatement. This season’s Petaluma boys cross country team not only dominated Redwood Empire distance running, winning the Sonoma County League and North Coast Section championships, but it went on to become the first Redwood Empire boys team ever to reach the podium at a state meet, finishing second. Last spring, in his first year as head track coach, Lynch’s Trojan boys won the Sonoma County League championship. Lynch never grew up or prepared to be a coach. He was raised in Terra Linda and graduated from ... More About: Article , Coach , Nice

Most Extreme (and inspiring) Race
2008-02-15 07:19:00 I just discovered your blog and thought you (and the lovely readers of Cross Country Express) might be interested in hearing about one of the world's most extreme (and inspiring) races, the Mt. Cameroon Race for Hope, happening this Sunday the 17th of February. This marathon-length race traverses over 10,000 vertical feet up a live volcano, one of the tallest on the African continent. The racers, mostly local farmers, compete for the equivalent of four years' salary, but to win they must overcome altitude sickness, temperature fluctuations of 50 degrees, and loose volcanic rock— many wearing only plastic sandals. Runners/filmmakers Steve Dorst and Dan Evans just released a beautiful film about the race, called Volcanic Sprint, focusing particularly on the story of Sarah Etonge, winner of the women's race in the last 5 out of 7 years and a 39 year old, single mother of 7 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarah_Etong e). She is known locally as the "Queen of the Mountain... More About: Extreme
