Running in the Rain
2008-01-26 13:24:00 If you want to see what the weather looks like for the next week and beyond, check out www.accuweather.com. From my experience, the site is usually right on and most of the time, they are remarkably accurate down to the hour.Unless you can run between the rain drops, you are going to get wet the next week or so. You can choose to wear rain gear during your run which will protect you from the elements. You can also go with your regular outfit of running shorts and a shirt and that works out just as well. The human body does a remarkable job of warming up after a few minutes and the rain is usually a welcome addition to most runs.Lastly, following your run, you should immediately change to dry clothes. Do NOT put your shoes in the dryer. The hot air dryer will speed up the breakdown of the shoes’ material, and you’ll be wearing them out soon enough. The best advice is to stuff the shoes with newspapers and by morning, your shoes should be mostly dry. Some runners choose to ... More About: Running , Rain

Running Shoes...What to look for?
2008-01-08 16:36:00 When it comes to distance running, the most important acquisition that you will make will be your running shoes. There is plenty of information out there that you can find which will make your next shoe buy an intelligent one.First find a store in your area that deals with runners. Second, have somebody watch you walk and run so that they can see how you make contact with the ground. Try different kinds of shoes and get out of the store and run with them. Once you make your purchase, write the date of your purchase on the side of you shoe. This will be a reminder of when you bought your shoes. Once you begin running with your shoes, the rule of thumb is that a good quality shoe will last about 400-500 miles. If you can afford to, buy two pairs and rotate your shoes. The soles of your shoes take up-to 48 hours to rebound to their normal state so rotating your shoes will help. Finally, get good insoles for your shoes such as Sof Sole, Spenco or Superfeet. The following link wi... More About: Running , Shoes , Running shoes

Best Running Book in 2007
2007-12-29 02:14:00 C.C. Pyle's Amazing Foot Race: The True Story of the 1928 Coast-to-Coast Run Across America (Hardcover)From Publishers Weekly Pyle, a sports agent and promoter, came up with the idea of a footrace (mockingly known as the Bunion Derby) from Los Angeles to New York that promised $48,500 in cash, including $25,000 to the first-place winner. For a $125 entry fee, male participants got the chance for a nice payday while subjecting themselves to harsh weather, primitive housing and Pyle's ego and shady business practices. They also had to run 3,500 miles over 84 days (the equivalent of 40 miles a day) long before comfortable running shoes and sophisticated sports nutrition. Williams, a contributor to Entrepreneur magazine, has evocatively recreated a long-forgotten sports event, mixing colorful anecdotes from the race with vivid portraits of the runners. There's Brother John, a bearded zealot who raced in a sackcloth, and 20-year-old Andy Payne, a part-Cherokee Oklahoman who competed t... More About: Running , Book
Petaluma’s state cross country team top sports story of 2007
2007-12-28 05:20:00 The town known for chickens and arm wrestling can now add cross country to its ever growing list of claims to fame. Following their 2nd straight sweep at the SCL final, the Petaluma boys also won their 2nd straight NCS Division II title and then accomplished much more at the state meet. After their 5th place finish in the previous season ('06), the majority of the team returned this year to finish 2nd behind one of the top teams in the nation, Loyola. The following week, the team traveled north to the Nike Team Nationals in Portland, Oregon (picture of team above courtesy of Bill Yungert following their race) and in the tough conditions finished an impressive fourth in the open race. With all those accomplishments, the Petaluma Argus Courier recognized the boys' cross country team as their top sports story of 2007.•http://www1.arguscourier.com/arti cle/20071226/COLUMNISTS03/370719857Will Petaluma be known as the cross country capital of the world anytime soon???
