Larry David and his Acceptance of Fore in his golf game
2011-06-29 14:32:00
Research shows that about twenty percent of all golfers regularly score better than ninety for eighteen holes on a regulation length golf course; on a course rated seventy-two, that score translates into an eighteen handicap. Enter the trials and tribulations of Larry David , who, in the current issue of The New Yorker Magazine, discusses the stages of his golf game which led from anger to denial and finally to his acceptance of the word 'fore'. It's amazing how even the most jocular sorts turn dead serious when discussing their golf game and have even injected golf into their "schtick". Ray Romano's character in "Men of A Certain Age" is a scratch golfer attempting to gain entrance to the Senior Tour. Larry David , ever the sad-sack golfer in "Curb Your Enthusiasm", enlightens readers in this article as to why he should probably never again play golf at Riviera Country Club. Both comedians love the sport and both are relatively good golfers: Romano's handicap (12.6)...

Without Tiger Woods can American golfers rally at The Open?
2011-06-27 19:35:00
The latest headlines read, "Tiger Woods out of AT&T National". Notah Begay has postponed his charity event until the former number one recovers and is now suggesting that Woods may also step away from the British Open . Although American PGA Tour golfers, without Tiger Woods in the field, are winning their share of weekly events, they have handed over the last five majors to European Tour golfers, leaving American "grinders" shaking their heads in disbelief. PGA Tour golfers like Nick Watney are fed up and tired with their sub-par level of play, saying that it's time for Americans "to step up.? Scott Verplank, being "very honest and very American" plainly stated, "It?s just that Rory McIlroy, Luke Donald, Lee Westwood and those guys are playing better than us.? Even Steve Stricker is disappointed with his inability to win majors, stating after the 2011 U.S. Open, "These major championships are kind of new to me. I?m going in with kind of low expectations."  With Stricke...

Breezes Runaway Bay in Jamaica a Super Beach Retreat
2011-06-24 17:09:00
When I first received a press invitation to visit Breezes Runaway Bay in Jamaica as part of a girl's golf getaway, I must admit I jumped at the chance! Only a three-hour Air Jamaica flight to the beachfront at a super-inclusive resort on the Caribbean Sea, walking upon some of the finest sand, being pampered with manicure, pedicure, spa treatment, and playing golf? It was a dream come true...and a birthday wish! Super Clubs Breezes Runaway Bay is on a lovely quiet cove with everything a vacationer needs in order to relax, from hammocks dangling in the shade to food and drink being served around every corner of the twenty-two acre retreat. Although there are so many different activities to occupy your time outside of the complex (golf, Dunns River Falls, swimming with dolphins to name a few) it is a pleasure to just grab a book, take a swim or take a slow walk and melt the stress from the job which awaits you upon your return home. Could it be that Runaway Bay was named Bre...

What will Olympic status do for golf in Brazil?
2011-06-23 15:56:00
August 5th 2011 marks five years to go before Rio de Janeiro hosts South America?s first Olympic s and golf returns to sports? biggest stage for the first time since 1904. Tim Maitland looks at how the sport is evolving in Brazil as 2016 inches nearer. From Rio de Janeiro?s perspective, the final piece of the Olympic jigsaw was put into place in June when, during the IOC Coordination Commission?s visit, the decision to build a new course in Barra da Tijuca, rather than to refashion the nearby Itanhanga Golf Club, was made. For the Rio 2016 Organising Committee it meant that the venue master plan was complete. With the five-years-to-go point upon us, it gives golf fans a clearer picture of what golf in the Olympics will be like, with the International Golf Federation still working on the qualification premise it presented to the Olympic family when it successfully made its bid for inclusion in 2009: the top 15 men and women in the world rankings (with a limit of four p...

Golf and Brazil's International Olympic Growth Potential (part 2)
2011-06-23 15:53:00
August 5th 2011 marks five years to go before Rio de Janeiro hosts South America?s first Olympic s and golf returns to sports? biggest stage for the first time since 1904. Tim Maitland looks at how the sport is evolving in Brazil as 2016 inches nearer, from building awareness in the sport to golf as an international business. Read the first segment here, What Will Olympic Status do for Golf in Brazil? Building Awareness Typically, tournament golf is one of the biggest drivers of awareness in any emerging golf market, but the days when Gary Player, Ray Floyd, Jerry Pate and Hale Irwin etched their names on the Aberto do Brasil or Brazil Open trophy in the 70s and 80s are a distant memory. And the European Tour?s Brazil Rio de Janeiro 500 Years Open and Brazil Sao Paolo 500 Years Open as part of the celebrations of Pedro Alvaras Cabral?s ?discovery? of the country in 1500 did no more than mark the anniversary and quickly disappeared. For the moment, it?s left t...

Rory McIlroy, a Chandler-Slam and other hot 2011 U.S. Open golf topics
2011-06-20 21:36:00
Surely the hottest buzz during the 2011 U.S. Open was in response to Rory McIlroy's tremendous golf game but there were other side stories that kept the media, and fans, humming. Here are a few memories from the 111th U.S. Open at Congressional Country Club. 1. A Chandler-Slam?  Rory McIlroy's stupendous comeback after a misstep at the Masters to become one of the youngest U.S. Open champions set the stage for a possible 2011 Chandler-Slam. Andrew "Chubby" Chandler's stable of top-notch golfers has given him a few major wins including last year's Open winner Louis Oosthuizen and 2011 Master's Champion Charl Schwartzel. Could Lee Westwood grab this year's "British Open" or will McIlroy's confidence carry him through the rest of the season? 2. The next Tiger Woods ?  McIlroy will have to win quite a few more tournaments to be placed in the same league as Woods, but leave it to the media to make comparisons to get fans' juices flowing. In majors it's still Tiger W...

Dustin Johnson's Myrtle Beach as a world-class golf vacation destination
2011-06-17 15:22:00
U.S. Open hopeful Dustin Johnson is actively promoting the golf mecca, kids are flocking to it (for the free golf?) and the beaches are so pure that the Grand Strand has been ranked as one of the best and least expensive vacation areas by U.S. News Media Group. Myrtle Beach is a rising star as a family fun destination. Dustin Johnson at home in Myrtle Beach  Earlier this season, 2010 fifty-four-hole U.S. Open leader and area  native Dustin Johnson signed on to promote the Myrtle Beach region as "America's number-one golf destination." Twenty-six year-old Johnson said, "Myrtle Beach truly is one of the world?s top golf destinations, and has so much to offer in the way of beaches, restaurants, nightlife and even shopping. I can?t think of a better place for a golf vacation, and I?m proud to now be able to spread the word. Regardless of where I reside, Myrtle Beach will always feel like home." Hotels, Golf and Non-Stop Atlantic City Casino Action
2011-06-14 00:00:00
Atlantic City Boardwalk At least once or twice a year I travel three hours from New York to Atlantic City, New Jersey, in order to partake of boardwalk/beach action, great casinos and, of course, the nightlife. Rarely do I ever spend more than an overnight and, strangely enough, I have never played one round of golf in Atlantic City! The Atlantic City Golf Course (operated by Hilton Hotels ) is undeniably a place to play a round of golf; the terms "Birdie" and "Bogey" were coined there, but it is to understand casino strategy and pull the one-armed bandits that I usually find myself in New Jersey. I am not a heavy gambler; as a matter of fact, I rarely move past the quarter machines to the dollar machines, but I still like the action of pulling the slot handle and usually sit mesmerized until the wheels have made their stop. It is usually my husband who will meander with me through the roulette and blackjack tables in order to find the dealer that "feels" right. Also, the drinks ...

Golf and Adventure Getaway Jamaica-style
2011-06-10 01:59:00
One segment of the girls' golf getaway package at Breezes Runaway Bay Resort is, naturally, to take a lesson and play a round (or more) at the SuperClubs Golf Club but once that is done, what are five adventurous ladies supposed to do? Why not interact with dolphins!   The morning began with a lovely breakfast buffet including the freshest of fruit and some of the finest Jamaican coffee (with warmed milk) at the Beach Buffet. The girls gathered in the lobby and were escorted to Dolphin Cove at Treasure Reef, purported to be Jamaica's number one attraction, to get up-close and very personal with dolphins, sting-rays and even stand over shark-infested waters!   We opted for the "Encounter Swim" program and had enough time before meeting the dolphin named "Skye" to first watch an entertaining shark show. The girls even had the opportunity to hold a very heavy, slithery stingray then snorkel alongside of these mammals and other assorted fish. My first s...

Air Jamaica makes travel to Runaway Bay a Breeze
2011-06-08 05:04:00
Although air travel was more than a bit turbulent on today's descent into Jamaica's Donald Sangster Airport, the "super-inclusive" hospitality offered by the Caribbean Airlines made up for any discomfort. Most airlines tack on fees for baggage and throw you a bag of peanuts but Air Jamaica offers flyers two bags of luggage checked-in for free (a treat if you want to bring your golf clubs with you to Breeze s Runaway Bay). I was also surprised to receive a hot, tasty sandwich with two snacks. The online web portal check-in, available within three to twenty-four hours of my Jamaica escape, offered a short wait on the special line. Air Jamaica, which just merged with Caribbean Airlines, calls their attentiveness "lovebird service", I considered it refreshing! Once the flight arrived safely in Jamaica, customs validated my passport and then it was a short walk to the Breezes Runaway Bay lounge located inside the airport terminal. Travel ers were greeted and quickly checked-in and s...
A Memorable Kodak Challenge at The Memorial
2011-06-06 20:43:00
Although Steve Stricker trophied with a one-stroke win at The Memorial (and had a memorable hole-in-one this week), it was Zack Miller who captured Kodak Challenge Shot of the Day honors when he dropped his 136-yard approach to one inch of the cup on hole fourteen during final round action. Miller was one of thirteen pros to birdie the tricky 363-yard par-4 Kodak hole at Muirfield Village. While Miller's near eagle led to the easiest Kodak birdie, Daniel Summerhays drained a twenty-one-footer for the final round's longest Kodak birdie putt. About Kodak Challenge hole #14 at Muirfield Village GCKodak Challenge hole number fourteen is a tricky 363-yard par-4. The picturesque hole presents golfers with a downhill tee shot into a wide, tree-lined valley. About 245 yards from the championship tee, a creek emerges from the left woods to border the fairway. This carries on for some 40 yards before angling across it and then on down to flank the right side of the green. The green i...
Jamaica golf vacation at Breezes Runaway Bay during Women's Golf Month!
2011-06-02 20:44:00
Jamaica is an island nation where over one-million visitors vacation each year. Feelings conjured up when thinking about "Xaymaca" a.k.a. "land of wood and water" are tropical breezes against my skin, green fairways and, as the locals say, "Irie"!  Imagine the excitement I felt being selected as one of five women writers to travel on a fun-filled ladies golf getaway to Breezes Runaway Bay Resort Jamaica! Since June is Women's Golf Month and the trip coincides with my birthday, this was an offer to graciously accept!  Map of Jamaica An early flight (only three hours) from New York to Montego Bay, will leave an entire day to get acquainted with the twenty-two acre, all-inclusive Breezes Runaway Bay Resort and Golf Club. Uribe Boosts South American Golf with HSBC Brasil Cup Win
2011-05-31 16:22:00
With five years to go before Brazil hosts a golf's return to the Olympics, Colombia?s Mariajo Uribe gave the women?s game in South America a significant boost by winning the HSBC LPGA Brasil Cup in Rio de Janeiro. Tim Maitland reports. Mariajo Uribe, Winner of 2011 HSBC Brasil Cup The twenty-one-year-old from Bucaramanga gained her first victory as a professional shooting a 9-under-par 135 for the US$720,000 two-round event at the Itanhanga Golf Club in the Barra de Tijuca district of Rio. Uribe, the 2007 U.S. Women?s Amateur champion, won by a stroke from Australian Lindsey Wright who narrowly missed a seven-foot breaking putt to force a play-off. ?It?ll make a huge impact on South American golf, especially women?s golf. With the Olympics coming up we need a lot of representatives from South America, so I think it?s a big deal,? said Uribe, who enjoyed enormous local support during her six-under-par final round. ?That?s how Latin people are: It?s not only because I?m Col...
HSBC LPGA Golf Stars Issue Olympic Rallying Call
2011-05-30 17:54:00
Two of the world?s leading golfers landed in Rio for the HSBC LPGA Brasil Cup with a simple message for the sport: ?Next Stop: Olympic s - Let?s grab this opportunity with both hands?, Tim Maitland reports. World number two Suzann Pettersen and number four Cristie Kerr believe Rio 2016 represents a once in a lifetime chance for the sport to establish itself in a country where less than one in every eight thousand people currently play the game. Less than a week after battling it out in the final of the Sybase Match Play Championship in New Jersey, Pettersen and Kerr sat on lounge chairs sipping glasses of fruit juice on Botafogo Beach, hoping it would be the last occasion they will have time to enjoy Rio de Janeiro?s sun-kissed sand. ?We?ve got five years before we return for the Olympics in Rio and the HSBC LPGA Brasil Cup is the one foundation stone our sport has to build on,? said Pettersen, in the build up to this weekend?s two-day, limited-field event at the Itanhanga Golf Cl...

Five reasons why Tiger Woods should opt-out of the U.S. Open
2011-05-26 18:02:00
Although Tiger Woods expects to play golf in the U.S. Open , is it a smart career and personal decision or should he opt-out?   Tiger admirably wants to compete (and win majors) and has made year-long commitments to fans and sponsors, but that did not stop Woods from opting out of the 2010 season. Here are five reasons why, if Tiger Woods hobbles away now from the U.S. Open, and perhaps for the remainder of 2011, he just might rebound stronger in 2012.   1. Physical recuperation. Tiger Woods needs to heal his injuries, period. If he keeps playing golf, he will continue to withdraw from golf tournaments before the final round. There are two more major Championships he can compete in if he nurtures his wounds now.     2. Prioritize. Tiger Woods needs to get his life in order. A divorce debacle which has followed him around (of his own doing), swing coach catfights, loss of endorsements and possible IMG management changes continue to plague the former wo...

Getting a grip on technology using golf gloves?
2011-05-25 18:04:00
Is it considered an unfair advantage during a round to improve your grip with the help of a golf glove? The meaning of "bionic", as defined by Dictionary.com is "utilizing electronic devices and mechanical parts to assist humans in performing difficult, dangerous, or intricate tasks, as by supplementing or duplicating parts of the body."   The Six Million Dollar Man was recreated after an accident with technologically advanced replacement parts to help give him a superhuman advantage...to run faster and jump higher in order to rid the world of undesirables.   Claims in a press release issued by the Bionic® golf glove company stated that their glove is a "piece of game-improvement equipment and not just a golf accessory or apparel item."   "The biggest difference is felt when you play a round with Bionic, " said the release. "Research at the renowned Pinehurst Golf Academy showed that most golfers who used Bionic gloves gained six yards of driving distance." ...

Golf tips and Acupuncture to help prevent injuries and improve your swing!
2011-05-19 19:55:00
Age, repetition of common motion, stress, tension and desk jobs can inhibit flexibility and range of motion, which directly impacts a golfer?s game and leads to sub-par performance.  Dwayne Lee L.Ac , acupuncturist, avid golfer and specialist in golf-related injuries at PLACE360 Health + Spa in Del Mar, CA., helps golfers enhance flexibility in order to gain range of motion and rotation. In conjunction with Place 360, Dwayne has sent me a list of Six Health Tips to Improve Your Golf Game: 1. Flexibility: Most golf related injuries can be avoided by keeping muscle and connective tissue warm and pliable. Crucial are low back, hips, shoulders and upper torso. Take a fifteen minute pre-round stretch to avoid having to take weeks off the course due to back strain. 2. Strengthening core/abdominal and the big upper leg muscles will prevent undue stress on the back and arms. Keep the center tight and the centrifugal force of your swing will be safer and more powerful. 3. Av...

Was age a factor in David Toms defeat at The Players?
2011-05-16 20:26:00
While watching the final round of The Players Championship, I heard an announcer question whether or not David Toms could go the distance this particular Sunday, a long, tiring day in which both third and final rounds were being decided. Because of his age, would Toms tire as he progressed through the back nine?I reacted by posting a similar question to Twitter but without the age variant, wondering if Toms could hold on for the nine remaining holes to win The Players . Responses ranged from simple yet effective "yes" to "yes, he is cagey"  @BobFriend_golf. No one mentioned that age may play a factor in his defeat. And why should it? Forty-four year old Toms is certainly not old yet he has had his share of career-limiting physical ailments. Even so, age was not the reason why David missed a three-footer on the first playoff hole at TPC Sawgrass, handing over a well-deserved win to K.J. Choi.   KJ Choi and David Toms 2011 The Players   His wife Sonya's telltale...
Why Tiger Woods withdrew from the Players Championship
2011-05-13 22:22:00
With Tiger Woods ' astonishing withdrawal from The 2011 Players Championship , could Woods' departure from golf be close at hand?   The Twitter world was all abuzz today after Tiger Woods hobbled off the exacting TPC Sawgrass golf course playing a six-over 42 through nine holes. On May 5th Tiger Woods' opted out of the Wells Fargo but, in a Terminator-esque video statement declared , "I'll be ready!" for the 2011 U.S. Open.   Should Woods have decided in advance to pull out of The Players Championship focusing his sights on the Open?   Photo Credit: Tiger Woods, 2011 Players Championship   In 2010, Tiger withdrew from the Players Championship before the final nine holes on Sunday declaring a sore neck in spite of a respectable three-round tally of 70, 71, 71. Giving Woods the benefit of the doubt, even with a bum knee Woods managed to win against Rocco Mediate in the final round of the 2008 U.S. Open.   Is Woods deciding to take a hypochondr...
Mickelson a candidate for World Golf Hall of Fame Class of 2012?

Three-time major winner Ernie Els, former President George H. W. Bush, 19-time PGA Tour victor Doug Ford, Japan?s Masashi ?Jumbo? Ozaki, the late Frank Chirkinian and the late Jock Hutchison were inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame Class of 2011 in St. Augustine, Florida yesterday. Tiger Woods ready-or-not for 2011 U.S. Open?
2011-05-05 22:14:00
Remember when Tiger Woods finished off Rocco Mediate in a playoff at the 2008 U.S. Open ? He hobbled around the course wincing in pain from a torn ACL in his right leg. Prior to that, Woods won two additional U.S. Open tournaments, in 2000 and 2002, in both cases being the only golfer to score under par!   Ahh, the good old days of the Tiger Woods mystique, when fans thought him to be an alien, a great guy and basically the most winningest golfer who one day would take more events than, and could be in line for, Jack Nicklaus' vacated throne.   Then came the downfall and both Tiger Woods and the game of golf suffered immeasurably. Woods' comeback and attempt to win the 2010 US Open failed as he remained within reach but struggled for fourth place, a 4-over par score of 75, to tie with Phil Mickelson who grapples year-after-year with his own demons to conquer the US Open.   Fast forward to May 5th, Cinco de Mayo, and Tiger Woods' Terminator-esque video statemen...
Bubba Watson: America's newest golf and fan favorite?
2011-05-04 19:47:00
An article in The Palm Beach Post, "He's Bubba Watson , he's American and he's becoming a big time player," made Tom Petty 's song "Freefalling" come to mind:"She's a good girl, loves her mamaLoves Jesus and America too..."Gerry "Bubba" Watson is fast becoming both a USA and PGA Tour 'best hope' as a young number-one player most likely to grab the top spot in the Official World Golf Rankings. Although it will take time to 'rule' the rankings and push past European Tour golfers, I was curious as to why Bubba is fast becoming a fan favorite.   Photo credit: New Orleans Sport   Can it be his social media conversation that engages fans? Happy with par at Zurich Kodak Challenge Hole #17?
2011-04-29 18:05:00
Although there have been a few aces in the history of the 215-yard 17th golf hole at TPC Louisiana, many golfers at the Zurich Classic consider this Kodak Challenge hole to be a very long and difficult par-3. Darron Stiles may have used a 7-iron to ace the 17th hole in 2005 with Daniel Chopra needing a 5-iron to do the same in the final round of the 2007 New Orleans Zurich Classic but the vision of water and newly reshaped green may be problematic for the players. Tournament Director Rommy Fonseca conveyed about TPC Louisiana's Hole #17, "This is a unique hole that has proved very challenging for the players. It has also provided some great play over the years." RotoExperts.com assessed that the onslaught of Hurricane Katrina caused the redesign of the 17th... "...giving Dye the opportunity to move some bunkers around, redesign the green and generally make it hell for everyone who dares to gaze upon it from the tee box. Last year, the hole was ferocious, ceding just 38 birdi...

Should a golfer be number-one without a major?
2011-04-27 18:23:00
Type "World Golf Rankings" into Google and you will be exposed to less-than-positive perspectives ranging from "unimpressive" to "who cares?"  How important are the World Golf Rankings and to whom? John Feinstein, a contributor to GolfChannel.com writes, "in a pure golf sense, the world rankings are used to determine who gets into major championships, who gets into lucrative World Golf Championship events and, in the case of the WGC match play event, the rankings determine the seeding of the 64 players." ?Ranking Points?, according to the Official World Golf Ranking website, "are awarded according to the players? finishing positions and are generally related to the strength of the field. The four Major Championships are rated separately to reflect the higher quality of the events." Points span a two-year "rolling" period so Tiger Woods ' with his big point spread was able to remain in the top spot during most of the 2010 season despite not winning an event all year!  ...

PGA Tour players twitter on Wives golf game

PGA Tour players share golf tips in Men's Fitness
2011-04-15 23:06:00
Although I rarely have reason to flip through testoterone-laden magazines such as Men 's Fitness , after hearing that a section was dedicated to improving aspects of the golf game, I took a look.   Yes, there are plenty of "buff" males in the May 2011 issue but I kept focused on the task at hand, thumbing through the pages until I came across the golf tips.   After passing segments entitled "Gut Check", "Fast Lane" and the "Cardio Workout from Hell", I came upon Rickie Fowler dressed in bright green golf clothes and three pages jam-packed with golf exercises, tips and tricks designed to transform "lifters" into "players".     In MF Golf '11's "Own the Green", Scott Riehl offers up a golf-specific training routine to help improve balance while working the torso. There are also quick fixes if you're tight or erratic. Camilo Villegas' tip, "I don't care what position your club is in, you have to be able to repeat the same motion over and over." &nbs...

The Caddie Who Won The Masters-more golf suspense at Augusta
2011-04-12 17:43:00
After watching the dramatic finish of The Masters, I couldn't help but feel a longing for more visions of Augusta National Golf Course.
