2007-02-12 22:42:01 Click here to listen. The AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am is much like the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic. They're both like "silly season" events, heavy on celebrities and good will, but top golf professionals are in attendance getting the rust off their games instead of being on the slopes awaiting a new year of challenges on the PGA Tour. Giving the AT&T Celeb rity Pro-Am it's due, Barry and I discuss handicaps of some of the notables this week; who really takes it seriously and who plays there for the laughs and scenery of Pebble Beach. Take , for example, the celebs who could really use a golf lesson. Clint Eastwood, although a respectable eleven handicap, "could be one of the worst putters I've ever seen" said Jesper Parnevik. Not that Eastwood needs our help, but we dole out a golf tip that could improve his putting. Amateurs should really make an attempt to watch these events because as celebrity swings are analyzed, we also can also realize the faults within our... More About: Break , Wood

2007-02-09 22:41:06 Astronauts, beauty queens and politicians as role models have been diminishing from public view faster than Tiger Woods' 125 m.p.h.swing speed. Everywhere you look nowadays there are fallen angels apologizing for not upholding their end of the bargain; that is to ensure that our children as well as ourselves have someone to look up to. Astronauts always gave the image of being squeaky-clean bastions of society. Lisa Nowak proved that the daily tribulations of stress are far more powerful than undergoing the rigorous challenges of training for space travel. With the help of Donald Trump who, according to Rosie O'Donnell, is no "moral compass", Tara Conner was allowed to dust off her tiara and return to the coveted role of Miss U.S.A. after proving that she is only human. Trying to turn her life around and show blossoming teenagers the error of her ways and that she can be a leader of today's youth, Conner refused further temptation when she decided against Playboy Magazine's co... 2007-02-06 22:39:06 Click here to listen. Barry's constant lecturing during driving range practice prompts this week's discussion on solid ball contact. He's right because hearing the "click" each time you strike the ball is the surest way of achieving proper distance control. With the help of Golf Magazine we relate a great golf tip that should have you hitting your irons center-cut so when spring arrives, you're ball flight will be consistent and true. Also, while cleaning out our golf bags, Barry and I chat about one way of acquiring proper aim while putting. Our wedding anniversary falls yearly on Ground hog Day (it's our fifteenth). Kind of funny that the decision-maker as to whether spring is near is a relative of the rodent family. This year Punxsutawney Phil predicted an early spring...only four more weeks of winter. Nope, he didn't see his shadow. Being a native of the Bronx, how would I ever know the difference between the two critters? I looked it up and found that not only are g... Lorena Ochoa accused of being "on something" when she took the LPGA by stor
2007-02-06 22:39:06 I enjoy searching the internet for interesting golf stories. Sometimes I check out the local newspapers online to see what staff writers are coming up with and other times I check the blogger rolls. I just happened to be googling the name "LPGA" and came up with this news article. I'm sure that we are all aware that the LPGA will be testing for performance-enhancing drugs as well as changing the format to a three-hole playoff at this year's U.S. Women's Open. No, I had no problem with that part of the commentary. I take offense at the line, "...because clearly, Lorena Ochoa is on something..." after mentioning drug evaluation. Does the writer believe that the only reason Ochoa had such a great season was because she was pumped up on steroids? Opinionated views like this one do nothing but discredit the author. Ochoa didn't need to take any kind of drug to achieve her record-setting 2006 season. When she received the National Sports prize from her native Mexico Ochoa replied,... Michelle Wie needs to accept LPGA Kraft Nabisco invite
2007-01-30 22:35:02 Finally Mich elle Wie receives an invitation to a tournament in which she might not only make the cut but also win! Why hasn't Wie hurriedly accepted the tournament's sponsor invitation into the first major of 2007? Is "The Big Wiesy" getting too big for her britches? Now that she's a consummate professional making cuts left and right on the PGA Tour, she wouldn't be thumbing her nose at the LPGA Tour, now would she? Naturally, the Kraft Nabisco Championship could use Wie for a ratings boost but Michelle can also use this LPGA major to finally come out of her slump and win her first professional event! Michelle Wie runs on "almosts"...she almost came from behind last year to win the Kraft Nabisco but her eagle try ran past the hole and her putt for a playoff was off the mark. Perhaps the sixth time is the charm? Then there's also the Rolex World Rankings to consider. With the rankings changing every week, Wie dropped two spots and Annika Sorenstam is still the top banana. ... More About: Elle , Hell , Need

There's much to offer our listeners in this week's episode of Golf for Beginners, from discussion involving the ever-astonishing Tiger Woods right down to knee-surgery, which is becoming more routine. Barry can now say that he has something in common with Tiger Woods, namely a repaired left knee. We explain how arthroscopic surgery (Barry had a partial "Meniscectomy"), although becoming more mainstream, is not as easy to recover from as doctors may claim. We also review the G-Clip 4-in-1 mini golf tool, an innovative product from Fine Tune golf. It's versatility on the course should make golfers more excited about fixing ball marks on the green as well as being "at the ready" to dispense a tee if ever a playing partner should be searching for one. One of our quick golf tips comes from Fine Tune Golf packed away with their compact golf tool. "How to repair a pitch mark on the green" is rarely done correctly so we offer up this suggestion hoping that our ... More About: Pod , Podcast , Buick , Take
Can Tiger Woods become a better golfer?
2007-01-28 16:33:01 Unlike most golfers on the PGA Tour who rely on a bit of assistance from the "golf gods", it appears that achieving perfection is all that's left for Tiger Wood s . Coach Hank Haney has confirmed that Woods has made strides since last July when he finished second at the Cialis Western Open. That date also marked the last time Tiger lost in a tournament. Yes, even the great Tiger Woods needed improvement last season. His driver was a bit erratic, and he brought his "B" and "C" games to many tournaments, although that was usually enough to win. However, if Tiger brought his "A" game to every tournament, he would probably win with ease. Would that become boring to his fans or would it still amaze us how he can hit so many perfect shots that, when we play, we can only master one or two during a round of golf? In a conversation recently with Brian Hewitt, Hank Haney commented, "you never get completely there. That's why it's so much fun working with him. We know that every day there ... Michelle Wie's youth could help aging Champions Tour
2007-01-28 16:33:01 Playing an event on the Champions Tour comes with a built-in stigma, that is, the realization that the men playing golf are no longer youngsters and can no longer compete with guys like Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson. Although the acceptance age is a spry fifty, don't think that for one minute Vijay Singh is anticipating his move to the once named "Seniors Tour". You may occasionally flip to The Golf Channel where you can watch some of the great golfers who have made the transformation from PGA Tour player to Champions Tour golfer. Hale Irwin and Tom Watson have been quite successful as senior players, helping to relate a healthy image for the Champions Tour. Arnold Palmer has shown the world that you can still compete into your seventies. He gives the amateur senior golfer hope as well. Mark Rolfing, in his commentary, "Seniors need Palmer personality", notes that with the retirement of Arnold Palmer "it will become increasingly important for the Champions Tour to insure there ... Taking the "gone skiing" notice from off of his front door, Woods readies himself for the long road ahead where he'll be challenging both Singh and Mickelson for not only top position on the money list but also for the lion's share of FedEx points. 2007-01-16 22:25:05 Click here to listen. While it's unlikely in the foreseeable future that Michelle Wie will make a cut in a PGA Tour event, we do not necessarily agree with Tim McDonald either. Barry and I talk about how Wie went awry, from her wrong choice of clubs right down to allowing the tournament pressure to get the best of her. In stark contrast, 16-year-old Tadd Fujikawa showed fans that having fun has its advantages as he became the second youngest golfer in PGA Tour history to make the cut. While Tadd is probably relishing this new "factoid", Vijay Singh is cringing at Sam Snead's record. Thank goodness that television cameras focused on this up-and-coming golfer who, at 15, also qualified for the U.S. Open at Winged Foot. Could someone as vertically challenged as Fujikawa be the next Tiger Woods? Everyone except Tiger, watch out ! 2007-01-16 22:25:05 Michelle Wie won an event against PGA Tour professionals this week at Waialae Country Club. She and her partner, amateur Alex Ching, took this year's skills event in a playoff at the inaugural King Auto Group Pro-Junior Skills Challenge. Both Wie and Ching made it to the playoffs but it was Ching who sealed the deal by placing his golf ball closest to the pin. Dean Wilson, Jerry Kelly and Davis Love III were among three professionals wondering if Michelle Wie can pull off a similar miracle at this week's Sony Open. My guess is probably not as Michelle Wie sported a bandage-covered sore wrist which she believed she had damaged several tournaments ago at the LPGA Samsung. Although her injury isn't life threatening, as long as she remains heat-tolerant, Wie should be able to make it through the first two rounds. At least Michelle Wie showed a bit of spunk in spite of her wrist injury this week by winning the skills challenge. I still do not believe that she will make it to the w... Should Michelle Wie receive a mention when asking LPGA fans
2006-12-28 22:18:02 Everywhere you look some association is busily handing out awards. Male athlete of the year has been bestowed upon Tiger Woods by both the GWAA and by the Associated Press, Lorena Ochoa was given the women's honor by the same organization and the Sports Illustrated models even gave Michelle Wie the nod by pronouncing her one of the top "hotties" of 2006. Are there any more accolades to be doled out before the start of the 2007 golf season? The LPGA Tour has decided to pay homage to their own, in the same vein as the ESPY's which gave Annika Sorenstam her eighth female athlete distinction. The OWL Awards are hoping that, with your help, they can bestow their own diamond-encrusted owl-shaped statue upon the LPGA golfers who have shaped events this year. Would Tiger Woods and Lorena Ochoa have won the GWAA awards
2006-12-22 04:13:04 Did Tiger Wood s text-message Annika Sorenstam to gloat after winning his eighth GWAA player of the year award? Did Lorena Ochoa inwardly chuckle after snatching that same award from Annika Sorenstam's grasp? The Golf Writers Association of America believed Ochoa to be more worthy of receiving this year's accolade than Sorenstam and rightfully so. The Mexican sensation finished off the 2006 season with six wins on the LPGA Tour versus half that amount for Annika. Ochoa also led the official money list and came away with Vare trophy for low scoring average, an honor bestowed upon Sorenstam six-times in eleven years. Are the lasik eyes of Tiger Woods akin to steroid enhancemen
2006-12-14 10:06:01 I now have the eyes of the tiger...Tiger Wood s that is! It's now about two weeks since lasik surgery has been successfully performed on my peepers and I must admit, it feels as if it happened a lifetime ago. Even with the new technology of intralase bladeless lasik versus the original Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis, I still chose the original procedure. The price was much more reasonable and I figured that the surgeon (and the VISX machine) would have already had plenty of experience carving that microkeratome into my baby browns. Barry got the opportunity to watch as the operation was televised. The short procedure lasted only about 5-6 minutes for both eyes. Ah, I feel so fortunate to be living in this day and age where I can walk into a room with 20/150 vision and saunter out with 20/20 or better! Tiger Woods underwent the same operation in 1999 when there was no laser to create the flap and had several enhancements since then to achieve optimum vision (he's at 20/15... 2006-12-04 10:00:01 Click here to listen. Not all husbands and wives are meant to share the game of golf. Tiger Woods and his wife Elin, for example, enjoy other activities together as she is an expert downhill skier. As Tiger stated, "Being married to a Swede, you have to ski, no choice." This week a listener asks about the probability of getting his wife to learn golf. This question started a "friendly" confrontation and an all-out battle of the sexes debate quickly ensued! After a brief reminiscence as to how Barry helped get me interested in the sport, I thought about something that he reiterates after every round he plays with his foursome, namely that the game doesn't end until that final putt drops in on the 18th green. Vijay Singh is taking lessons from Tiger Woods
2006-12-02 15:58:02 Imitation is considered the sincerest form of flattery. I guess Vijay Sing h must consider Tiger Wood s PGA Tour '07 fair game as he has created not only the initial Vijay Singh Pro Golf Game but now an updated version more simply entitled, "Pro Golf 2007". Vijay has taken his game in a slightly different direction, preferring not to compete with Woods head-to-head but laying up instead on the mobile frontier. I wonder if dropping Singh's name out of the title will inhibit or spur on this golf game's growth? Tiger Woods has recently announced his venture into golf course development. No sooner has the ink dried than Vijay Singh has plans on the table for his new Natadola Golf Course in Fiji. Imitating Tiger Woods? One could do worse than to follow Woods' business model! 2006-12-02 15:58:02 You've got to give Michelle Wie credit as she tees it up against the men for the final time this year at the Casio World Open. She just keeps on ticking with no sign of stopping. As a determined Wie stated, "Get used to it". And so we shall as Michelle Wie completes the "watch" tour. There was the Omega where she finished at the bottom of the leaderboard and now the Casio where last year's memory was of a sobbing teenager who had just thrown her chances away after bogeying the final two holes of the tournament. Will she become as frazzled at the end of this event, or has she grown? If so, will B.J. be standing at the sidelines, ready with her handkerchief? Although Wie's chances of persevering in any men's tournament grows more dim with every passing exemption, she did have a single glimmer of hope from a cut made at the SK Telecom Open. Finchem and PGA golfers rightfully grumbling about Woods and
2006-12-02 15:58:02 I don't blame Commissioner Tim Finchem for being upset that Tiger Wood s and Phil Mickelson are AWOL from this week's Tour Championship. He is the head of the organization in which both men have risen to the top of their respective games. He is also the pinnacle of the food chain when it comes to "heads rolling" if the PGA Tour doesn't receive enough viewership. Without golf's two biggest stars, how many people are really watching? When I heard that both Woods and Mickelson were kicking back instead of heading out to work, it ticked me off. I don't get the luxury of deciding when to leave my job, telling my cohorts, "see you next spring, guys, cover for me". I don't think these two should have that right either. Annika Sorenstam takes a publicity lesson from Michelle Wie
2006-12-02 15:58:02 While Lorena Ochoa struggles to grab player of the year honors on the LPGA tour, Annika Sorenstam has decided she likes the PGA "silly season" better, foregoing the Mitchell Company Tournament of Champions for a matchup against the men. Sorenstam and Fred Couples, known as the "king" of the post-season, have paired up for this week's Merrill Lynch Shootout. Normally this wouldn't catch my attention but it appears as if Annika is diversifying, stretching her legs after a terrific golf season and, perhaps, wondering if she can attract the same kind of media attention as PGA tour wannabee, uber-teen Michelle Wie . This is the first time that a lady has been invited to the shootout, staged by Aussie Greg Norman. I guess women golfers DO attract attention! Here are some tips on how to defeat Annika Sorenstam. 1. All must agree that those playing with Sorenstam must be willing to bend the rules of etiquette. This means they must come supplied with weaponry other than their sticks. 2. One of those in the grouping must make believe that they have a very bad cold. They must also be willing to sneeze and cough loudly in Annika's backswing. 3. One of the LPGA players who are yet to tee off must bring an airhorn and position herself out-of-sight, blowing said airhorn when Annika is going for a birdie or eagle putt. Everyone in her grouping should also grind their spikes into her putting line on a regular basis. 4.
