2010-11-01 18:12:00
Although technically retired, former LPGA golf legend Lorena Ochoa stepped back into competitive golf holding off Colin Montgomerie to win Asia's largest prize at the inaugural Mission Hills Star Trophy event in China this past weekend. Credit (Alexander F. Yuan / AP) The international celebrity pro-am golf tournament, held at the new, five-star Mission Hills Resort Haikou on tropical Hainan Island consisted of eighteen teams with one celebrity and a professional. A few notable golfers on the celebrity front included Catherine Zeta-Jones , Hugh Grant, Matthew McConaughey, Michael Phelps and Christian Slater. They joined forces with golf heavyweights and Host/Ambassador of the event, Greg Norman along with Annika Sorenstam, Sir Nick Faldo, Rosie Jones, Montgomerie and Ochoa. In the team event, played in the four-ball stroke play format, LPGA golfer Candie Kung and Hong Kong celebrity Eric Tsang emerged as champions. They added a blistering 63 to yesterday's five-under 68 to ...

Can the PGA and LPGA Tour bring Asian golf to the ROW?
2010-10-28 17:30:00
The popularity of golf is escalating to a fevered frenzy in Asia but can the PGA and LPGA Tour help bring this emerging market to the rest of the world? With the WGC-HSBC Champions event combining the talents of Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson for a possible dream match and Michelle Wie needing a bodyguard to keep fans at bay during the LPGA Malaysia, Asian golf fans are coming out in droves to witness star power in professional golf. The Asian golf market is relatively unknown here in the USA but has plenty of events during the season sanctioned by the Asian Tour, OneAsia and the Japan Golf Tour. It appears as if all of the Tours operate independently of each other instead of combining strength to create one professional commission with larger purses and better known talent. The LPGA has already established the Japan and Korean Tours but the Ladies Asian Golf Tour remains a separate entity. In July, Tim Finchem made rumblings that there may be more PGA Tour events springing up i...

With a golf academy currently being designed in Moscow, are the Russia ns eyeing domination at the 2016 Olympics ?   The golf course design practice founded by five-time Open Champion Peter Thomson with partners Ross Perrett and Tim Lobb has been commissioned to design a new golf academy at Moscow’s Luzhniki Olympic Complex.    The landmark development will introduce golf to Europe's largest sports center, venue of the 1980 Olympics and 2008 Champions League Final between Manchester United and Chelsea, which boasts facilities for more than forty different sports with five million visits per year.   The new golf academy will include a new 9-hole par-3 golf course, driving range, practice putting, family adventure golf, plus a spacious clubhouse with indoor golf simulators.   Luzhniki Olympic Complex, Moscow   TPL principal Tim Lobb said: “The golf academy at the Luzhniki Olympic Complex will be an important development for ...

Greg Norman, Annika Sorenstam worried about the future of golf
2010-10-21 18:32:00
In an effort to find innovative ways for golf to be more "affordable and accessible", Greg Norman, Annika Sorenstam and golf creative thinkers convened at the fourth annual Asia Pacific Golf Summit. This 'call to action' in Thailand was only one of several forums designed to effect a change in the sport in order to attract more newcomers and to keep the golfers that already play interested in the game. Earlier this year, a Golf Business Forum in Turkey tackled similar questions with both Norman and Sorenstam in attendance. Believing interest in the sport has hit its limit and is now declining, Hud Hinton, Troon Golf president and chief executive officer warned that, "The game is too expensive to play, too difficult to play, too expensive to operate and the pace of play is too slow." Greg Norman came up with an interesting idea regarding the premise that it takes too long to play a round of golf. "There's nothing to say that a golf course has to be 18 holes. Why shouldn't 12-...

Tiger Woods earnings down but still $30 million richer than Phil Mickelson
2010-10-19 20:11:00
According to SI.com, Tiger Woods may have dropped $9 million in earnings from last year but he is still the number one golfer on tour and still about $30 million ahead of Phil Mickelson! In spite of his scandalous year, advertisers dropping like flies and nary a win in sight, Tiger Woods earned a whopping $90.5 million: only $20 million in "salary" from PGA Tour standings but $70 million from endorsements! In spite of being dropped by Gatorade, ATT and Accenture (see below), Woods' $10 million FedEx Cup bonus helped keep him in the number one position on the "Fortunate 50", ahead of Mickelson, LeBron James and Alex Rodriguez, whose Yankees salary of $33 million with only $4 million in endorsements barely halves Woods' home run. Here is a list of Tiger Woods' corporate partners and sponsors, according to Golf.com, which helped keep Tiger Woods ahead on the money list: 1. Nike - "Just Do It" 2. EA Sports 3. Tag Heuer - "What are You Made of?" 4. Gillette - "The Best a Man ca...

2010-10-16 23:11:00
Two-time HSBC Champions winner Phil Mickelson has helped to unveil the new trophy for the World Golf Championships -HSBC Champions: 'The Old Tom Morris Cup', reports Tim Maitland.  Photo:Getty Images The new cup and name are in keeping with the other three World Golf Championships events, which also boast similarly-designed Wedgwood trophies named after golfing legends. The World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship awards The Walter Hagen Cup to the winner, the World Golf Championships-CA Championship offers The Gene Sarazen Cup, and the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational winner holds aloft The Gary Player Cup.  “I am really fond of the original trophy, which can happen when you win something more than once,” says Mickelson, who lifted the 2007 HSBC Champions and then became the first winner of the tournament following its elevation to World Golf Championships status in 2009. “But the new trophy has...
Are BornFit Skorts too sexy for Golf?
2010-10-14 17:26:00
The sexy Oxford "little skort that could" from BornFit combines great styling with comfort for the golf course but should there be a warning label on the package that it offers too much "sass"?   The "new" mom is the target audience at Bornfit, where activewear meets maternity. No longer are mommies sitting on the sidelines watching the action. Instead, moms of today are runners, golfers and involved participants in sports, and that is why they NEED this skort! When I first removed the BornFit Sassy Oxford Skort from its package I wondered if it would even fit me but I was happily surprised: this skort is really comfortable. Also, the no-chafe undershorts coupled with the moisture-wicking Poly/Spandex fiber allowed me to walk the course comfortably concentrating on golf. Okay, so I looked for pockets for my golf accessories (tees, ball mark repair tool, etc) and found a small concealed one on the inside of the Bornfit skort. Not enough for golf activewear in my o...

Montgomerie Warns Westwood That Tiger Woods Will Bite Back
2010-10-12 19:44:00
Europe’s winning Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie has warned his star player Lee Westwood to expect a backlash from Tiger Woods when he takes away his position as the world’s number one golfer. The Englishman, who was the bedrock of Europe’s victory at Celtic Manor last week, is projected to take over the top spot in the Official World Rankings when the world’s leading players arrive in Shanghai for the WGC-HSBC Champions in the first week of November.   credit   With Lee Westwood resting his injured calf and Tiger Woods not scheduled to play before China either, the 37-year-old from Worksop will overtake the American superstar by virtue of losing fewer points from the back end of the two-year period that the standings are calculated from. However Montgomerie says that Westwood has got to expect an immediate response when Woods gets to Shanghai. “He won’t like being number two at anything and he’l...

Will eavesdropping on PGA, LPGA golfers bring more reality to golf TV?
2010-10-08 20:43:00
Golf fans previously immersed in the FedEx Cup and Ryder Cup are now being fed more reality-based PGA Tour and LPGA events where golfers are mic'd up during their round. Golf Channel continues to test this format on TV with the assistance of a few willing participants. Will this experiment in unrehearsed 'golfer to caddy chat' increase viewership? In a nutshell, here are four choices for golf television viewing October 7-10. In two out of the four events, professional golfers will have microphones attached so that fans can hear conversations with their caddies. Golf Channel Big Break Dominican Republic relying on Giuliani for support
2010-09-29 18:52:00
Andrew Giuliani (credit) Golf Channel is relying on the popularity of Andrew Giuliani (son of former NYC Mayor Rudy) and eleven other former "players you know and love?or hate" offering up the biggest prize in Big Break history in order to stir up interest and a continued following in the 14th season of the reality show. Twelve former contestants will get a second chance tonight at The Big Break: Reunion, Revenge, Redemption, this time set in the Dominican Republic. The premise is that teams compete against each other in order for one golfer, male or female, to reign supreme, get exemptions and win prize money. Sure the prizes and the idea of Big Break are interesting but can't Golf Channel come up with a slew of new contestants or are fans more interested in watching a show that rivals Jersey Shore?    The winning team at the conclusion of the 10-episode series will share the $100,000 cash prize, with $50,000 going to the most valuable player (MVP), who will be cro...

Did PGA Tour Championship or Fed Ex Cup mean more to Jim Furyk?
2010-09-27 16:43:00
A dejected Luke Donald concluded that the double bogey on the 15th hole on Saturday was why he lost out on a $10 million Fed Ex Cup prize to Jim Furyk. Furyk, on the other hand, was busy trying to lift both the PGA Tour Championship and Fed Ex Cup trophies, while trying to decide which meant more to him.   (credit)   Pointing to the Fed Ex Cup Furyk said,   "They both mean a lot, to be honest with you, but this one is a season. ... I focused all week on trying to win this one (pointing to THE TOUR Championship trophy) and hoped this one (the FedExCup) could come true."   Perhaps Furyk now has another trophy in his sights, namely the Jack Nicklaus Trophy as the PGA Tour's Player of the Year.   Jim Furyk is now moving on to the 2010 Ryder Cup and, if 2008 Ryder Cup action is any indication of how he'll perform, I suspect Team USA will be taking home the trophy once again!   Here is last year's picture of Phil Mickelson and Tiger W...

2010-09-23 16:26:00
From defending Tour Championship golfer Phil Mickelson to first-time Ryder Cup nominee Matt Kuchar, PGA Tour players had plenty to say going into this week's golf tournament with an eye on winning the $10 million prize and FedEx Cup bragging rights.   Here are a few golf quotes from Mickelson, Kuchar, Hoffman, Casey, Johnson and a long-winded Steve Stricker.   Q. Several things could happen this week. If you win you'd be the No. 1 player in the world, you'd be the only guy ever to successfully defend this championship, probably be Player of the Year, and yet still all of the stars would have to align correctly in order for you to win the FedExCup. Do you think that's right, or is there another tweaking in the system that needs to be made so that those kinds of year-long things matter more than these last four events? PHIL MICKELSON: I haven't played well in the first three FedExCup events, and so you have to have some value to those events. And you can'...

PGA Tour's J.B. Holmes vs Annika Sorenstam in Golf Skins and Skills Game

Holmes is coming to the aid of former Ryder Cup Captain Paul Azinger at the Forsgate Foundation Charity Golf Classic, Sept. 27-28, at Forsgate  Country Club in Monroe, N.J.  Azinger is temporarily sidelined from playing golf due to a rib injury so Holmes has agreed to take his place in this highly anticipated two-day charitable e vent pitting himself against Annika Sorenstam .    Holmes will mingle with guests at the Live/Silent Auction on Monday, Sept. 27, and join LPGA Legend Annika Sorenstam on Sept. 28, at 2 p.m., for the Charity Classic’s Skills Exhibition and the nine-hole Bud Light Skins Game at 3 p.m.    A member of the victorious 2008 USA Ryder Cup team, Holmes ranks No. 25 on the 2010 PGA TOUR money list with over $2.3 million in earnings.  This year, H olmes posted three, top-10 finishes in official PGA Tour events, including a tie for second at the AT&T Pebble Beach Nat...
Golf Channel's Social Media Experiment needs tweaking.
2010-09-20 16:33:00
Some golf fans enjoyed Golf Channel's social media "experiment" on Saturday while others claimed that the format just "did not work" but one thing is for sure; kudos go out for trying! Golf Channel 's Twitter acknowledgment that their announcer-lite format might need work, "Don't worry we have announcers today," was merely a response to angry viewer commentary on the Q and A forum. Sound issues from mic noise and the lack of narration from the broadcasters actually detracted from the Nationwide Tour's Boise Open. Here are a few fan complaints about the Golf Channel announcer-lite Satuday: Mark Boyd Said on 09/18/2010, at 6:18 PM EST ?This simply does NOT work!! Should have learned after the NFL tried this tears ago - didn't work for them either!!!!? albegolfin Said on 09/18/2010, at 6:15 PM EST ?we watch golf every weekend. Will the Golf Channel Social Media Twitter Experiment be a success?
2010-09-17 17:57:00
credit Golf Channel will go "non-traditional" in it's Nationwide Tour coverage this Saturday; light on the announcers and heavy on the social media interaction. ?If it works, it could be to golf announcers what reality TV was to actors," according to Golf Channel announcer Stephanie Sparks. Sparks and Kay Cockerill will be on the 13th and 15th tees doing player interviews and Jerry Foltz and Curt Byrum will limit their comments on air but will interact with viewers "via social media channels such as Twitter," according to a network release. You will also hear commentary directly from the caddies and players as the final four pairings will be equipped with a boom microphone. Will this Twitter, Facebook social media experience have golf fans frantically typing away on their smart phones interacting with announcers or will the experiment prove to be a flop? Television commentary has been known to be dry at times so why not spice it up, chatting back-and-forth with an extended au...

What Tiger Woods considers The Crowning Jewel of All of Asian Golf
2010-09-15 20:34:00
It took just one staging of the WGC-HSBC Champions to dispel all doubts as to whether a World Golf Championships event could succeed in Asia. Tim Maitland reports on how the Shanghai tournament has spearheaded another step up the ladder for tournament golf in Asia. At some stage between the inception of the HSBC Champions in 2005 and Tiger Woods last year calling it ?the crowning jewel of all of Asian golf", golf in Asia made a transition. Not that the autumn swing to the East was ever just a bit of fun - the big names that did travel certainly lived up to their billing ? but now there is little question that Asia has taken its place at the top table of top-class tournament play. The who, what, why, when, where of Asia?s coming of age? The ?where?? is a no-brainer. The venue: the Nelson & Haworth design Sheshan International Golf Club. The ?who?? or ?what?? is just as easy: the HSBC Champions - whether through its winners-only fields, the champions it produce...

Will Tiger Woods sit out the Ryder Cup?
2010-09-13 17:46:00
Although Tiger Woods ' "wildcard" spot on the Ryder Cup USA Team is assured, with his uncertain record, will Corey Pavin utilize him as a player or as the team cheerleader? ?I am going to treat every player the same. The objective is to try to win the Ryder Cup and if in my judgment I think Tiger is to play five matches, or should play four or three, then that is what I will do ? that?s my call as captain? Pavin told BBC radio on Sunday. Tiger Woods has not won a single event nor placed himself into contention this entire PGA Tour season. With his less-than-stellar performance yesterday at the BMW Championship, Tiger Woods has removed himself from obtaining the FedEx Cup and the Tour Championship. Bad for Tiger Woods but very good for Bo Van Pelt... Furthermore, Woods' Ryder Cup record is intermittent at best, winning less than half the number of points (11 out of a possible 25) during his entire professional career. Even so, wasn't it Phil Mickelson who lost it for Team USA...

Can TaylorMade Burner Irons 2.0 Really Add Distance and Improve Your Accura
2010-09-10 19:06:00
TaylorMade makes a bold statement: they contend that the new 2.0 Burner Irons will add distance and improve your accuracy and feel on the golf course...but can they? The TaylorMade Burner 2.0 Irons were "engineered to combine legendary Burner distance plus more feel and playability." The design has been enhanced to be more durable and to resist glare with a "two-toned "Burner Black PVD finish" but that hardly improves a golfer's accuracy.  Let's read on... Improve d Weight Distribution to Optimize Ball Flight in Short-, Middle- and Long-Irons Weight distribution varies in every Burner 2.0 clubhead to improve long-, middle- and short-iron ball flight. In the long-irons, weight has been shifted toward the back of the head, to promote easy launch, and toward the toe and heel, to promote greater stability and forgiveness. In the middle-irons, weight is distributed more evenly and slightly higher to promote workability while still providing forgiveness. In the short-irons, weight ...

Golf Tips for making the most out of your Bethpage Black round
2010-09-08 17:29:00
After playing Bethpage Black Golf Course yesterday, we have composed a few golf tips to get the most out of your first round. Bethpage Black Golf course is a grueling test of a golfers' composure, stamina and ability to strategize.  When you come upon the WARNING sign at the first tee at Bethpage Black, do not shrug it off...believe it. You must be in good physical condition to take on the Black Course. If your legs are no longer as sturdy as they used to be, choose the Red or Green Course. Golf carts are not allowed on The Black Course so be prepared to walk your way though it's undulating dirt and sand strewn pathways. After taking pushcarts, we suggest that you carry your golf bag and be sure to make it as light as possible. Ladies should be aware that the difference between playing the forward versus the white tees is only about 461 yards (forward tees=6,223 yards, white tees=6,684 yards). There was only one hole on which I felt I had an advantage but wound up...

Would the Big Apple take a bite out of Tiger Woods?
2010-09-02 16:46:00
Would Tiger Woods thrive in the Big Apple or will a possible rebound apartment in New York City send him packing to Jupiter Island, Florida? As Chris Cross' song states ("Arthur" Soundtrack), "When you get caught betweeen the moon and New York City, the best that you can do is fall in love.." With reports varying from Tiger Woods not moving into an apartment on Hudson Street in New York to internet articles pondering if it would be a good idea, I wondered the same. Tiger Woods is no stranger to the Big Apple: he has a few memories (cough...Bethpage Black) which have sent him packing. But it is the latest issue of a $54 million mortgage taken out on his Florida bachelor pad may just have taken the bite out of his plans. After reading ten reasons Tiger Woods should have an apartment in NYC and then the opposing side (both on Bleacher Report), I wondered if the greatest golfer in the world would be happy in the biggest city in the world or anywhere at this point in his life! What do Golf and Harley Davidson Motorcycles have in common?
2010-08-30 18:53:00
Today, Lake Isle Golf and Country Club received an unlikely visitor to its 9th tee box: a 2010 Harley Davidson Nightster motorcycle! You might ask what a tough-looking 1200cc HD Nightster would be doing riding through the rough (but not on fairways and greens) of a private golf course today? New Roc Harley Davidson, located in in New Rochelle New York, sponsored this golf hole (as well as the remaining par-3's with other great gifts) in order to benefit the American Diabetes Association. The golfer who gets a hole-in-one on the 9th hole will win this hot motorcycle! So you see, golf and Harley Davidson motorcycles partner well...especially when it's for a great cause! Of course I don't know if motorcycle riders will ever look good in plaid! Posted via email from stacysolomon's posterous

Can British Open winner Louis Oosthuizen's "trigger" help you improve your
2010-08-27 18:50:00
David MacKenzie Written by David MacKenzie Louis Oosthuizen's victory in The Open and the discovery of the "Red Dot" concentration trigger that helped him win has golfers wanting to understand exactly how it works. Here's how.  The concept comes from a behavioral technology called Neuro Linguistic Programming (or NLP), a fairly new branch of psychology that attempts to improve a person's mental and emotional behavior. The teaching assumes that specific goals or actions (neuro) can be better achieved by "anchoring" (programming) past experiences with reinforcement stimuli such as touch, word or sight (linguistic). Louis Oosthuizen marked the now famous Red Dot above his thumb on his left glove after working with Sports Psychologist Dr. Karl Morris. During practice, when he was 100% focused and ready to execute a shot, he would look at the Red Dot and "anchor" this mental state with that sight. Then, during competition, looking at the Red Dot as part of his pre-shot rou...

Is Tiger Woods really "finished" or will he break more golf records?
2010-08-27 16:22:00
Last week, Drew Magary offered five reasons as to why he believes Tiger Woods is washed up or "finished" as a professional golfer. Think he's right?Magary claimed that Tiger Woods "has put his entire being into chasing Nicklaus and we, as fans, have followed him for over a decade assuming that the record would eventually be in his grasp".   Because, "he has to know, deep down, that this doesn't mean anywhere near as much as it used to" the writer believes that Woods cannot ever return to his original greatness. Here are the five reasons why Magary thinks Tiger Woods is washed up, will never break Jack Nicklaus' record nor will he ever be the golfer his fans want him to be:1. What's the point?2. He isn't made for this kind of adversity.3. Other players are better now, and they aren't scared of him.4. Turns out, Tiger Woods is not preternaturally immune to pressure.5. He's not Tiger Woods anymore. So who is he? Magary believes that the demise of Tiger Woods predominately...
