Tiger Woods and Elin demolish crib to keep relatives at bay
2007-03-13 16:31:00
Tiger Wood s is not only becoming a golf course designer but now has his hand in demolition. He and wife Elin have decided to bulldoze their existing Jupiter Island McMansion in favor of a smaller main house and two guest cottages. I have never been inside of a twenty-three thousand square foot home, but at ten times bigger than my "castle", I'm betting that it echos at night. Of course, if you're Tiger Woods, that "smaller" house translates into half the space of his current living area with two additional guest houses on the ten-plus acre waterfront compound. Perhaps it was Elin who first made the case for several smaller homes as opposed to their current spread. When the baby is born and Woods returns to his regular PGA Tour schedule, there will be two sets of in-laws pawing at the newborn. As Samuel Johnson once said, "No money is better spent than what is laid out for domestic satisfaction."

Will Annika Sorenstam need to do a Mexican hat dance to take the eyes off L
2007-03-09 04:58:05
Let me get straight to the point. Annika Sorenstam picked the wrong event for her LPGA season debut. Let's face it, the MasterCard Classic honoring Alejo Peralto is a tournament custom-made for Lorena Ochoa. Her fan base is in Mexico and she already won the Corona Morelia last year, earning the respect and accolades of her country and its citizens. Golf is a sport that is rising in popularity in Mexico and Ochoa is at its forefront. Sorenstam has taken her season opener five times (three in a row) but now must face off against Ochoa who is poised to steamroll over Karrie Webb and take top honors in the Rolex Rankings. True, Lorena has had her rookie "blips", snowmen coming down the stretch to sidewind her just at the moment of glory. But this year I see a different side to Lorena, one filled with confidence that won't allow her to be put off by a miserable eight. Although the season-openers in Hawaii were merely "okay" for Lorena (one top-five and one not worth mentioning), th...

Woods and Mickelson: PGA Tour royalty? Divot-Rite training aid and stop chu
2007-03-05 16:56:06
Click here to listen to this week's podcast. Tiger Wood s and Phil Mickelson are two of the best known "celebrity" golfers on the PGA Tour , but are they becoming royalty? Is the PGA Tour controlling the action or are the powers-that-be allowing them too much leniency? This week's question on "How we see it" is: Do Tiger and Phil have a responsibility to both the fans and the PGA Tour to play in more events? After all, in most other sports, you don't get to choose when you play. Sometimes the simplest devices can be the most effective. Divot-Rite has created a golf training aid which is supposed to correct one of the most popular swing faults of the average golfer, namely hitting the ball "fat". This small, plastic swing trainer also develops proper alignment, stance and shot accuracy. Does Divot-Rite work? Listen to this week's review and find out! While using Divot-Rite, Barry and I thought it would be great to offer up a golf tip specifically about how to avoid hitting th...

2007-02-26 16:51:02
Click here to listen. A single uncharacteristic putt for Tiger Wood s has given Nick O'Hern the title of "The Man who broke Tiger Woods' win streak". David took down Goliath for the second time in match play! Yes, this was a day of mental errors for Woods, from a shot that landed in the drink right down to that four-foot putt on the nineteenth hole which, as Woods claimed, left a "totally" repairable ball mark. We at Golf for Beginners discuss the USGA Rules of Repair on the Putting Green as well as how you can avoid Tiger's costly mistake. Barry and I also review the Club Glove Aficionado III stand bag. It's extra-light (only 5.6 lbs. fully loaded) as well as amazingly strong. The Izzo dual-strap design coupled with a thick, large, lumbar support makes it comfortable and easy to carry. A super-nice feature of the Club Glove Aficionado III is that all pockets are easily removable for lighter practice rounds although don't be fooled by this golf bag! It's large enough t...

Is Michelle Wie's presence haunting Creamer, Granada at LPGA Fields Open?
2007-02-25 16:51:02
Paula Creamer and Julieta Granada, although two of the hottest golfers currently on the LPGA Tour, played second fiddle to none other than Michelle Wie in the interview room at this week's Fields Open . Pam Warner insisted on slipping Michelle's name into her questioning, asking the two ladies, "This is Michelle Wie's home course, do you wish at all that you had a chance to play against her here?" To Paula Creamer, it doesn't matter who is in the field, as she stated, "Ultimately I just come out trying to play my game and play the course and beat that number". Young Granada, still laden with the enthusiasm of newness claimed excitedly, "Yeah, of course, I want to compete against the best and she always has a great game." But did it really matter? In second round action, Creamer starts tied for 52nd and Granada is hovering tied for 13th. Hardly the same game they both played last week at the SBS Open. Although this is Michelle's home course she is not playing this week. Her ...

Ogilvy and Harrington underdogs to Tiger Woods when betting on WGC-Accentur
2007-02-21 22:48:02
The Victor Chandler Agency, most notable for its British Open bets, has given the edge to Tiger Wood s (1/5) over J.J. Henry for this first round qualifier of the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship and places Henry at 150/1 to win overall. Woods is the overall favorite which is a head-scratcher because of his early exit from last year's event. The ultimate winner of last year's tournament, Geoff Ogilvy, although relishing that role, still feels it's important not to antagonize the number-one golfer in the world because, "he won the first nine holes last year after Stephen (Ames) ruffled him up a bit." Ogilvy may very well have a point as Woods is looking to extend his win streak to eight and break Byron Nelson's record. When the Tiger has something to prove, he's usually unstoppable. But match-play has also taken down the top PGA Tour golfers early. Els and Mickelson made hasty departures last year and Vijay Singh didn't even make it past the first round. That being said,...

"Effortless power", a thought mentioned by PGA Tour golfer/instructor extraordinaire Bob Toski, is our golf tip of the week. Toski regularly maintained that golf is not a game of brute strength. LPGA SBS Open - Hawaii dreaming
2007-02-17 10:44:11
Ah, to be in Hawai i with the tradewinds blowing, the smell of the ocean and the ability to play in a professional golf tournament! This week, while the LPGA makes its official debut at the Turtle Bay Resort, I will be dreaming of a vacation in Oahu as I try to stop my teeth from chattering in sub-temperate New York. With only three days of play, the ladies begin to wonder if their games are up to snuff, what they need to work on in the coming weeks to improve their chances and if they can be this season's Player of the Year. Here are some questions that I have been pondering: Will Lorena Ochoa be in the same fine form as in 2006? Will Julieta Granada show she's a better "sophomore" than rookie? In her rookie season, Granada won $1 million in one match-play event...hard to beat on the LPGA Tour. Can people stop looking at Natalie Gulbis solely as a calendar girl this season? Perhaps if she finally wins a tournament. Will Paula Creamer return for her junior season fiery of ...

Sappy FedEx Cup commercial lacks machismo
2007-02-17 10:44:11
"Who will be the first to kiss her?" asks the PGA Tour about it's newly created FedEx Tiffany-designed Cup. Did Tim Finchem really "okay" this one or was he in cahoots with Carolyn Bivens to create something syrupy for the LPGA Tour? Perhaps they swapped commercials? Come on guys, toughen up. You're playing for $10 million dollars, not auditioning for one of Shakespeare's comedies. For example, "Drink to me only with thine eyes and I will pledge with mine", croons Dean Wilson. "Other men have seen angels, but I have seen thee, thou art enough", warbles Sean O'Hair. "I'd fly to the moon and back if she'd be my baby" shouts Aaron Baddeley, probably the best actor in the bunch. Where's the beef, guys? Valentine's Day is over!

Will a pre-teen grab Michelle Wie's spotlight?
2007-02-13 22:43:02
Before Michelle Wie , at the ripe old age of seventeen, even wins her first professional golf event, Golf Digest's March 2007 edition has her successor all picked out! Twelve-year-old Alexis Thompson has trounced girls that are Wie's age at the Doral-Publinx Junior Golf Classic, recently took third place at an amateur tournament for women of all ages and almost advanced to the sectional qualifying at the 2005 U.S. Women's Open (prior to this Morgan Pressel was the youngest qualfier at just twelve). Thompson can hit her drives 230 yards and has aspirations of playing golf on the LPGA Tour but, as we all know, much can happen by 2013, the year that Alexis graduates from high school. The boulevard of broken dreams is filled with wide-eyed enthusiasts hoping for their turn at success. Does the popular golf magazine believe that Michelle is already washed up? The title of the article, "The next Michelle Wie" sure makes me think so. With her wrist out of commission, the possibility ...

They're both like "silly season" events, heavy on celebrities and good will, but top golf professionals are in attendance getting the rust off their games instead of being on the slopes awaiting a new year of challenges on the PGA Tour. Giving the AT&T Celeb rity Pro-Am it's due, Barry and I discuss handicaps of some of the notables this week; who really takes it seriously and who plays there for the laughs and scenery of Pebble Beach. Take , for example, the celebs who could really use a golf lesson. Clint Eastwood, although a respectable eleven handicap, "could be one of the worst putters I've ever seen" said Jesper Parnevik. Not that Eastwood needs our help, but we dole out a golf tip that could improve his putting. Amateurs should really make an attempt to watch these events because as celebrity swings are analyzed, we also can also realize the faults within our...

Astronauts, beauty queens and politicians as role models have been diminishing from public view faster than Tiger Woods' 125 m.p.h.swing speed. Everywhere you look nowadays there are fallen angels apologizing for not upholding their end of the bargain; that is to ensure that our children as well as ourselves have someone to look up to. Astronauts always gave the image of being squeaky-clean bastions of society. Lisa Nowak proved that the daily tribulations of stress are far more powerful than undergoing the rigorous challenges of training for space travel. With the help of Donald Trump who, according to Rosie O'Donnell, is no "moral compass", Tara Conner was allowed to dust off her tiara and return to the coveted role of Miss U.S.A. after proving that she is only human. Click here to listen. Barry's constant lecturing during driving range practice prompts this week's discussion on solid ball contact. He's right because hearing the "click" each time you strike the ball is the surest way of achieving proper distance control. With the help of Golf Magazine we relate a great golf tip that should have you hitting your irons center-cut so when spring arrives, you're ball flight will be consistent and true. Also, while cleaning out our golf bags, Barry and I chat about one way of acquiring proper aim while putting. Our wedding anniversary falls yearly on Ground hog Day (it's our fifteenth). Kind of funny that the decision-maker as to whether spring is near is a relative of the rodent family. This year Punxsutawney Phil predicted an early spring...only four more weeks of winter. Nope, he didn't see his shadow. Being a native of the Bronx, how would I ever know the difference between the two critters? I looked it up and found that not only are g...

2007-02-06 22:39:06
I enjoy searching the internet for interesting golf stories. Sometimes I check out the local newspapers online to see what staff writers are coming up with and other times I check the blogger rolls. I just happened to be googling the name "LPGA" and came up with this news article. I'm sure that we are all aware that the LPGA will be testing for performance-enhancing drugs as well as changing the format to a three-hole playoff at this year's U.S. Women's Open. No, I had no problem with that part of the commentary. I take offense at the line, "...because clearly, Lorena Ochoa is on something..." after mentioning drug evaluation. Does the writer believe that the only reason Ochoa had such a great season was because she was pumped up on steroids? Opinionated views like this one do nothing but discredit the author. Ochoa didn't need to take any kind of drug to achieve her record-setting 2006 season. When she received the National Sports prize from her native Mexico Ochoa replied,...

Michelle Wie needs to accept LPGA Kraft Nabisco invite
2007-01-30 22:35:02
Finally Mich elle Wie receives an invitation to a tournament in which she might not only make the cut but also win! Why hasn't Wie hurriedly accepted the tournament's sponsor invitation into the first major of 2007? Is "The Big Wiesy" getting too big for her britches? Now that she's a consummate professional making cuts left and right on the PGA Tour, she wouldn't be thumbing her nose at the LPGA Tour, now would she? Naturally, the Kraft Nabisco Championship could use Wie for a ratings boost but Michelle can also use this LPGA major to finally come out of her slump and win her first professional event! Michelle Wie runs on "almosts"...she almost came from behind last year to win the Kraft Nabisco but her eagle try ran past the hole and her putt for a playoff was off the mark. Perhaps the sixth time is the charm? Then there's also the Rolex World Rankings to consider. With the rankings changing every week, Wie dropped two spots and Annika Sorenstam is still the top banana. ...

There's much to offer our listeners in this week's episode of Golf for Beginners, from discussion involving the ever-astonishing Tiger Woods right down to knee-surgery, which is becoming more routine. Barry can now say that he has something in common with Tiger Woods, namely a repaired left knee. We explain how arthroscopic surgery (Barry had a partial "Meniscectomy"), although becoming more mainstream, is not as easy to recover from as doctors may claim. We also review the G-Clip 4-in-1 mini golf tool, an innovative product from Fine Tune golf. It's versatility on the course should make golfers more excited about fixing ball marks on the green as well as being "at the ready" to dispense a tee if ever a playing partner should be searching for one. Can Tiger Woods become a better golfer?
2007-01-28 16:33:01
Unlike most golfers on the PGA Tour who rely on a bit of assistance from the "golf gods", it appears that achieving perfection is all that's left for Tiger Wood s . Coach Hank Haney has confirmed that Woods has made strides since last July when he finished second at the Cialis Western Open. That date also marked the last time Tiger lost in a tournament. Yes, even the great Tiger Woods needed improvement last season. His driver was a bit erratic, and he brought his "B" and "C" games to many tournaments, although that was usually enough to win. However, if Tiger brought his "A" game to every tournament, he would probably win with ease. Would that become boring to his fans or would it still amaze us how he can hit so many perfect shots that, when we play, we can only master one or two during a round of golf? In a conversation recently with Brian Hewitt, Hank Haney commented, "you never get completely there. That's why it's so much fun working with him. We know that every day there ...

Click here to listen. While it's unlikely in the foreseeable future that Michelle Wie will make a cut in a PGA Tour event, we do not necessarily agree with Tim McDonald either. Barry and I talk about how Wie went awry, from her wrong choice of clubs right down to allowing the tournament pressure to get the best of her. In stark contrast, 16-year-old Tadd Fujikawa showed fans that having fun has its advantages as he became the second youngest golfer in PGA Tour history to make the cut. While Tadd is probably relishing this new "factoid", Vijay Singh is cringing at Sam Snead's record. Thank goodness that television cameras focused on this up-and-coming golfer who, at 15, also qualified for the U.S. Open at Winged Foot. Could someone as vertically challenged as Fujikawa be the next Tiger Woods? Everyone except Tiger, watch out ! Michelle Wie won an event against PGA Tour professionals this week at Waialae Country Club. She and her partner, amateur Alex Ching, took this year's skills event in a playoff at the inaugural King Auto Group Pro-Junior Skills Challenge. Both Wie and Ching made it to the playoffs but it was Ching who sealed the deal by placing his golf ball closest to the pin. Dean Wilson, Jerry Kelly and Davis Love III were among three professionals wondering if Michelle Wie can pull off a similar miracle at this week's Sony Open. My guess is probably not as Michelle Wie sported a bandage-covered sore wrist which she believed she had damaged several tournaments ago at the LPGA Samsung. Although her injury isn't life threatening, as long as she remains heat-tolerant, Wie should be able to make it through the first two rounds. At least Michelle Wie showed a bit of spunk in spite of her wrist injury this week by winning the skills challenge. I still do not believe that she will make it to the w...

2006-12-28 22:18:02
Everywhere you look some association is busily handing out awards. Male athlete of the year has been bestowed upon Tiger Woods by both the GWAA and by the Associated Press, Lorena Ochoa was given the women's honor by the same organization and the Sports Illustrated models even gave Michelle Wie the nod by pronouncing her one of the top "hotties" of 2006. Are there any more accolades to be doled out before the start of the 2007 golf season? The LPGA Tour has decided to pay homage to their own, in the same vein as the ESPY's which gave Annika Sorenstam her eighth female athlete distinction. The OWL Awards are hoping that, with your help, they can bestow their own diamond-encrusted owl-shaped statue upon the LPGA golfers who have shaped events this year. Would Tiger Woods and Lorena Ochoa have won the GWAA awards
2006-12-22 04:13:04
Did Tiger Wood s text-message Annika Sorenstam to gloat after winning his eighth GWAA player of the year award? Did Lorena Ochoa inwardly chuckle after snatching that same award from Annika Sorenstam's grasp? The Golf Writers Association of America believed Ochoa to be more worthy of receiving this year's accolade than Sorenstam and rightfully so. The Mexican sensation finished off the 2006 season with six wins on the LPGA Tour versus half that amount for Annika. Ochoa also led the official money list and came away with Vare trophy for low scoring average, an honor bestowed upon Sorenstam six-times in eleven years. Are the lasik eyes of Tiger Woods akin to steroid enhancemen
2006-12-14 10:06:01
I now have the eyes of the tiger...Tiger Wood s that is! It's now about two weeks since lasik surgery has been successfully performed on my peepers and I must admit, it feels as if it happened a lifetime ago. Even with the new technology of intralase bladeless lasik versus the original Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis, I still chose the original procedure. The price was much more reasonable and I figured that the surgeon (and the VISX machine) would have already had plenty of experience carving that microkeratome into my baby browns. Barry got the opportunity to watch as the operation was televised. The short procedure lasted only about 5-6 minutes for both eyes. Ah, I feel so fortunate to be living in this day and age where I can walk into a room with 20/150 vision and saunter out with 20/20 or better! Tiger Woods underwent the same operation in 1999 when there was no laser to create the flap and had several enhancements since then to achieve optimum vision (he's at 20/15...
