10 things I hate about football
2008-03-09 23:00:00 Don’t get me wrong, I do not hate football. I am a football nut, and I run a football website. That being said, there are some things about the sport of football, or more accurately, the state of football in this day in age that drives me crazy. So, what better than a countdown of the top things I hate about football? 10. The NFL Network The NFL Network is a great idea, but executed poorly by the NFL. They are trying to charge cable companies high fees for broadcasting the network, but then demand that the cable companies include it on their basic cable packages. With a limited viewership due to this battle, the NFL then turned around and started airing premier games that many of us did not get to see, like last season’s Cowboys-Packers game. 9. The NFL having a monopoly on pro football This really is a minor irritant. The problem I have with the NFL being a monopoly is that they have no incentive to try new things or innovate. Competition breeds creativity, so let’... More About: Football , Hate , Things

UFL, AAFL postpone 2008 kickoffs
2008-03-06 20:18:00 ESPN has broke the news that the All-American Football League (AAFL) will postpone its inaugural season at least a year if it cannot secure additional financing.UFLAcces.com is also reporting that the UFL will postpone its kickoff to 2009.With this recent news, it would appear that the chances of either league succeeding (or even making it to kickoff) is slim in none. However, a deeper look is needed into why these decisions were made.According to the ESPN article, the AAFL is in desperate need of more money. In fact, their website has a desperate plea for someone to step forward and save the season. If no one steps forward, it is doubtful the league will ever get off the ground. AAFL executives are also looking for funding from a potential TV deal. The UFL on the other hand, appears to be delaying the season for better reasons. The league already has six teams and ownership groups in place. They could have kicked off this season, but decided to wait for several reasons. First, they ... More About: 2008
A deeper look at the first week of NFL free agency
2008-03-05 20:05:00 Since free agency began at midnight last Friday, the signings have come at a furious pace. Some teams, like Oakland, the New York Jets, and Miami, have been extremely active. Others, like New England, Indianapolis, and the New York Giants, have decided against being an active member in the free agency market. This off season's Patriots?Last off season, the New England Patriots were making the most of the free agency market, signing WR Donte' Stallworth, LB Adalius Thomas, and trading for WRs Wes Welker and Randy Moss. This off season, the Cleveland Browns are trying to duplicate the Pats' strategy, hoping a Super Bowl appearance will reward their efforts. They gave out over $67 million in guaranteed money to five players. The Brown re-signed QB Derek Anderson and RB Jamal Lewis. They traded for DTs Corey Williams and Shaun Rogers. They also added receiving help in the form of WR Donte' Stallworth. The trades for Williams (2nd round pick) and Rogers (3rd), along with last year's tr... Brett Favre's retirement opens door for "The Mustache"
2008-03-04 23:47:00 Brett Favre's surprising retirement announcement means that it is finally time or Aaron "The Mustache " Rodgers to take over in Green Bay.And "Mustache Mania" is sweeping the nation. A curious detail popped up when analyzing the day's site traffic: Lots of people searching Google for "Aaron Rodgers + mustache" have found this site, and more specifically, this pic of Rodgers and said mustache (scroll down to #36) that was in an earlier post.Rodgers 'stache could be a smash hit, but only if he can make people in Wisconsin forget about Mr. Favre. God Loves The Gators' Three Round Mock Draft
2008-03-02 10:21:00 I've just completed my first mock draft of the year at MyMock Draft .com. Check it out, leave a comment, and sign up to do your own draft: Three Round Mock Draft. It was interesting trying to pick three whole rounds. While I follow college and pro football religiously, I haven't yet done extensive research on this year's draft class. With the first overall pick, I had Miami drafting DE Chris Long. I think he is the safest pick if Miami stays there. More About: Gators
NFL Replacements team becomes UFL Team
2008-02-29 00:24:00 I've been working on a team of replacements in case the NFL goes on strike in the next couple of years. I've since decided to change the purpose of the team. Instead of being an NFL scab team, it is now the first unofficial UFL team. By the way, rumor has it the league will not kick off in August as originally planned. More on that at a later time. These are the types of players the UFL may be competing for if/when they finally do play their first game. They plan to sign quality players who might only be back-ups in the NFL.Feel free to discuss the team on the message boards. The All-UFL Team OffenseQB: Trent Green, released by Miami on 2/11OT: LJ Shelton, released by Miami on 2/11OT: Wayne Gandy, released by Atlanta on 2/15OG: Mike Wahle, released by Carolina on 2/11OG:C: Mike Flanagan, released by Houston on 2/21WR: Isaac Bruce, released by St Louis on 2/28WR: Marty Booker, released by Miami on 2/11WR: Muhsin Muhammad, released by Chicago on 2/18TE: Alge Crumpler, released by Atlan... Hot NFL Trade Rumors
2008-02-28 19:18:00 There is plenty of buzz going around the NFL as the free agency period kicks in. This year's free agency class is pretty weak, but that doesn't mean there won't be any action this off season. In fact, many trade rumors have been making the rounds on the internet. Here are a few of the hottest ones, along with my odds on how likely they will occur. Many of these trade rumors are courtesy of ProFootballTalk.com.1. Miami Dolphins trade #1 pick to Dallas Cowboys for 2 first round picks and RB Marion Barber.Odds: 10:1This "reverse Herschel" trade would definitely be the trade of the year if it happens. Jerry Jones has denied he's interested in Arkansas RB Darren McFadden. He was also reportedly "exuberant" when McFadden ran a sub-4.3 40 at the combine. This trade wouldn't really make much since for Dallas, but people do strange things when they fall in love with a prospect (see San Diego and Ryan Leaf).2. Jacksonville DL Marcus Stroud to Atlanta FalconsOdds: 5:1Jacksonville is rumor... More About: Rumors , Trade
All American Football League Draft
2008-02-27 17:07:00 The All American Football League (AAFL) held their inaugural draft and supplemental draft recently. The AAFL is an upstart league with six teams (Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Michigan, Tennessee and Texas) that is marketing itself as a spring pro football league with a college atmosphere. One of the interesting things about the AAFL is that all players are required to have a college degree in order to play. Some of the notable players drafted into the AAFL include former Virginia Tech QB Bryan Randall by Tennessee, Nebraska QB Eric Crouch (Texas), QB Chris Leak (Florida), former first round pick Peter Warrick (Florida), former Dallas Cowboys and Arena Football QB Clint Stoerner (Arkansas), the QB of the National Championship Tennessee Vols team Tee Martin (Tennessee) and Rod "He Hate Me" Smart (Tennessee). With last year's decision by the NFL to fold its European league, the AAFL could serve as a good training ground for young prospects. It's degree requirement instantly gives it mor... More About: Draft , Football League
First pick in '08 NFL Draft to be costly
2008-02-26 02:33:00 The Miami Dolphins may have a problem trading the #1 pick in this year's draft. Not only are there no clear-cut "franchise" players at the top of the draft, but the #1 pick is expected to command a contract in excess of $60 million, with over half of that guaranteed. In the 2006 NFL Draft , #1 pick Mario Williams received a $54M contract, with $26.5M guaranteed. One year later, JaMarcus Russell held out until he signed a contract worth $61M with $32M guaranteed. Thats an increase of 13% in total value and 21% in guaranteed pay. (click here for full 2006 and 2007 First round contract details)If that trend continues (as it probably will considering the wealth of cap room most teams will again have this year) the #1 pick will likely sign a contract worth $69M total with $39M guaranteed. If the first pick happens to be at a "premium" position, like RB or QB, it wouldn't be unthinkable for those numbers to rise to over $70M total with over $40M guaranteed. That is a hefty price to pay for... Drafting a RB early not a good idea
2008-02-25 01:00:00 The NFL Draft is around the corner, and the Miami Dolphins are on the clock. One of the decisions they will have to make is whether or not to draft Arkansas RB Darren McFadden with the top pick. Such a move, drafting a RB in the top 10, is a mistake in my opinion.Running Backs in the NFL take more abuse than probably any other position. Every back in the league is one knee twist away from a career-ending injury. The injury factor alone makes drafting one high a risky proposition. But is it even necessary to have an All-Star RB to win the Super Bowl? Sure enough, Walter Peyton and Emmitt Smith were key to the success of their Super Bowl championship teams. But Barry Sanders never won one, and Ladainian Tomlinson has yet to even play in one.A strong run game is important to being a championship team. But you don't need a Peyton or Smith to have a strong run game. Many teams this year, including the Super Bowl champs, made do with lesser known backs, or RB by committee.A perfect exampl... Best and worst football predictions
2008-02-23 12:57:00 I made a few predictions at the start of last season. A review of my hits and misses are in order, and I promise not to brush any bad predictions under the rug.Back in July, I did a tongue-in-cheek post where I used a graphing calculator to predict the NFL season. So how well did my TI-83 picks do?The good: Cleveland with a winning record, Tampa winning their division, Baltimore and Cincinnati at the bottom of their division, Chicago missing the playoffs, and the NY Giants in the NFC Championship. The (really) bad: Miami winning 10 games (and the AFC East), Cleveland going to the Super Bowl, San Diego flopping (which started out good), Dallas winning three games, Green Bay winning eight games, and Philadelphia winning the Super Bowl.In August I did a post on the rookie QBs and who had the best chances of being successful. While it is still early, ranking Buffalo's Trent Edwards 8th is starting to look foolish. After one season, is Atlanta really better off without Mike Vick?Predictin... Updating the NFL Replacement Team
2008-02-22 17:56:00 In November the NFL owners may pull the plug on the last two years of the current collective bargaining agreement. While it is too early to speculate about a work stoppage, that won't stop us from having a little fun with the idea. So we came up with an NFL Replacement team to compete in case of a strike or lockout. The team is being built with players who have been cut from their teams. The NFL off-season is underway, and we finally have some options for our team.OffenseQB: Trent Green, released by Miami on 2/11OT: LJ Shelton, released by Miami on 2/11OT: Wayne Gandy, released by Atlanta on 2/15OG: Mike Wahle, released by Carolina on 2/11OG:C: Mike Flanagan, released by Houston on 2/21WR: Marty Booker, released by Miami on 2/11WR: Muhsin Muhammad, released by Chicago on 2/18TE: Alge Crumpler, released by Atlanta on 2/15RB: DeShaun Foster, released by Carolina on 2/21RB:DefenseDE:DE:DT: Keith Traylor, released by Miami on 2/11DT: Rod Coleman, released by Atlanta on 2/15LB: Dan Morga... Farewell Zach Thomas: Paying tribute to a Dolphins Legend
2008-02-14 19:26:00 Jay Glazer of Foxsports.com is reporting that the Miami Dolphins will cut ties today with LB Zach Thomas .As a lifelong Dolphins fan, I am sad to see him go. In my era of fandom (from about 1984 to present), Thomas is in my opinion the second biggest Dolphins legend. In fact, the first jersey I ever purchased (with money from a summer job), was Dan Marino's. The second: a blue #54 that still hangs in my closet.Thomas embodies everything the Dolphins were in his time with the team: a tough, underrated competitor that gave it his all every play. Unfortunately, the Dolphins never could field a potent enough offense to take advantage of the great defenses we had led by Thomas and Jason Taylor.Thomas has said that he isn't ready to retire. While I wouldn't mind seeing him go out a winner on another team, the fan in me hopes that team isn't the New England Patriots.Whatever team Thomas signs with, if in fact he doesn't retire, I wish him the best. Bengals, Raiders limit Dolphin's chances of trading #1 pick
2008-02-14 06:07:00 In a recent post on God Loves The Gators, I came up with a few scenarios for the Miami Dolphins to trade the #1 pick in this year's draft. Two recent news items seem to rule out some of those scenarios. On Wednesday, Cincinnati head coach Marvin Lewis reiterated that the Bengals will not be trading WR Chad Johnson. Whether or not the Bengals change their mind, the recent comments cause one to doubt the Johnson to Miami scenario will occur.Adam Schefter of the NFL Network is reporting that the Raiders have re-signed RB Justin Fargas to a three year deal after the back had a career season. This would seem to rule out the Raiders as a candidate to trade up for Arkansas RB Darren McFadden. It's far too early to tell what is going to happen with the #1 pick, as the draft is still more than two months away. Stay tuned to God Loves The Gators, as I will have plenty of draft coverage leading up to April. On a side note, I will be participating in a live mock draft on MyMockDraft.com. I will ... The NFL Replacements
2008-02-12 18:53:00 In anther example of God Loves The Gator's hard-hitting, intellectual sports journalism, we present to you the NFL Replacement team. You may be asking yourself, does the NFL need a scab team? Or you just may be asking "Why?"In November the NFL owners may pull the plug on the last two years of the current collective bargaining agreement. While it is far too early to speculate a strike or lockout, that won't stop us from jumping the gun.In the spirit of the great (ok, marginally silly) football comedy The Replacements , we will be building a team of scabs to take the field in 2010. To get on the team, a player must have been cut from an NFL team from the date of the last Super Bowl up to the day before the 2008 NFL season starts. Most of the spots are still open, as Miami and Carolina are the only teams to date to make any significant cuts. If you have any suggestions for who should be on the team, feel free to leave a comment or post it on our message board.OffenseQB: Trent Green, rel...
The Dolphins could trade the #1 pick, and here's how
2008-02-10 17:46:00 The Miami Dolphins hold the #1 pick in this year's NFL Draft. The Dolphins could take a player at #1, but they need more than one quality player. Trading down would definitely help this team rebuild. While there does not appear to be a clear cut #1 player in this year's draft, it only takes one team to fall in love with a player like LSU DT Glenn Dorsey, Arkansas RB Darren McFadden, or BC QB Matt Ryan, for the Dolphins to swing a deal.Trade scenario #1:Dallas offers R1 P22, R1 P28, and RB Marion BarberOne possibility floating around is that Dallas owner Jerry Jones will try to swing a deal for McFadden. The Cowboys have the 22nd and 28th picks in the first round of this year's draft. According the the NFL Draft value chart, those two picks are worth about 1500 points. The #1 pick is worth 3000. The Cowboys could sweeten the deal by throwing in RB Marion Barber. Barber is a restricted free agent, and teamed with current RB Ronnie Brown, would produce one of the most dynamic rushin... Mallett's transfer opens door for star QB recruit in Michigan; Double-digit
2008-01-10 04:53:00 According to ESPN, freshman QB Ryan Mallett has decided to transfer from Michigan . Mallett, the second best QB prospect in 2007 according to Scout.com, is not mobile enough for incoming coach Rich Rodriguez's spread option offense. The Wolverines' two best receivers, juniors Mario Manningham and Adrian Arrington, also feel like now is the time to leave, as both have declared for the NFL draft.Mallett's transfer opens the door for this year's #1 QB prospect, Terrelle Pryor to step in and start right away for Michigan. Rumor has it that Pryor wants to play as a freshman, and has his eyes set on the NFL in three years. Michigan, and Rodriguez's spread option offense, would be the perfect stage for Pryor to display his skills.According to Scout.com, Duke is now in the mix for Pryor's services, along with Michigan, Florida, Ohio State, and Penn State. Pryor wouldn't start at QB right away in Florida or Ohio State, but the other three teams all have openings. New Duke coach David C... More About: Double , Star , Transfer , Door
Seven QBs to battle for top of '08 draft board
2008-01-08 18:32:00 The 2008 draft class is shaping up to be an interesting one. There are seven senior QBs in this class with distinguished college careers who are battling for the top of many teams' draft boards. Outside of the top seven, there are plenty of talented "projects," including Oregon's Dennis Dixon and Delaware's Joe Flacco.Six of my top seven QB prospects all started at least 32 games in their college careers. USC's John David Booty only started 23. Games started, along with completion percentage, are believed to be the two best football stats to measure a QB. Michigan's Chad Henne, a starter since his freshman year, played in 46 games for the Wolverines.Games Started1. Chad Henne 462. Andre Woodson 37 Colt Brennan 37 Eric Ainge 375. Brian Brohm 33*6. Matt Ryan 327. John David Booty 23* Brohm received significant playing time in Louisville as a freshman, but never started a game. All seven of these QBs also have a high career completion rate.... Three reasons why June Jones should be the next SMU coach
2008-01-06 23:57:00 ESPN is reporting that Hawaii coach June Jones has actually resigned as the Warriors' head coach and is close to signing a deal to become the new head coach of Southern Methodist University. While the move is a step down in terms of program prestige, SMU would offer many benefits to Jones. For one, Jones is reportedly upset at Hawaii's lack of commitment to the athletic department. Even star QB Colt Brennan has voiced his displeasure about the under-funded athletic department. If SMU is willing to pay Jones $2 million a year (more than twice his salary at Hawaii), one has to assume that they are committed to a well-funded athletic program.Another reason for Jones to take the SMU gig is the fertile recruiting ground that is the state of Texas. Jones will have instant access to high caliber prospects and a recruiting budget that will dwarf what he has at Hawaii. Make no mistake, Jones will not steal prospects from Texas, Oklahoma, or Texas A&M. But like the state of Florida, there... More About: Coach , Reasons

Big Ten backer doing the Gator Chomp
2007-10-06 19:23:00 I was pleasantly surprised while watching ESPN's College Gameday this morning. Kirk Herbstreit actually picked the Florida Gator s to beat LSU.I have nothing against Herbie, Lee Corso, and the "sane" guy who runs the show, but none of them have ever been Gator fans. Herbie always picks the Big Ten, and Lee is a Seminole nut.So, Herbie's upset special is the Gators knocking off the #1 team in the country. If the Gators can pull it off, they will be right back in the National Championship picture. I am pulling for the Gators to run the table, and for Auburn to win their side of the SEC. Then we can get revenge on the Tigers in the SEC Championship, before beating USC (or South Florida???) for the National Championship.

Florida State and Alabama: Does there have to be a winner?
2007-09-29 22:00:00 For the first time in a long time, the Florida State Seminoles face the Crimson Tide of Alabama today. Does a winner have to be declared? As you may have guessed, I am not an FSU fan. And I can't stand Bobby Bowden. I respect what he has accomplished in his career, but I just can't stand him. He "jumped the shark" at least five years ago.Alabama does not rank high on my favorite teams, either. When the SEC created the "Super Conference" format, the Tide and Gators battled for the first couple championships. Like FSU, Alabama hasn't been much of a rivalry for the Gators in a long time. What you may not know is that I am a Miami Dolphins fan. While I am happy Nick Saban is not their coach anymore, the way in which he handled his exit from Miami leaves a bad taste in my mouth. This guy is to character what George W. Bush is to international diplomacy (that is my first, and probably last political dig on this site, promise!).What is intriguing about this game is the possible creation o... Ideas for a new brand of American Football
2007-09-28 21:59:00 Two new professional football leagues are to debut in 2008: The Mark Cuban-backed UFL and the College/Pro hybrid AAFL (All American Football League). If either of these two leagues want to stick around longer then the XFL, they would be wise to follow the Arena Football strategy: create your own unique brand of football. The AFL is not in competition with the NFL because with its 50 yard field and eight players per side rules, it is its own unique brand of football. So the task for these two new leagues is to create a brand that separates it from the NFL. Make it an apples to oranges comparison and you may have a chance at being successful. The AAFL has found its niche. They are marketing themselves as a "professional" version of college football. Teams will be placed in popular college football towns, with players from the home teams making the roster. As far as the basic rules of the game, their is a lot of flexibility. Here are a few of my ideas that could make for a unique football... More About: Ideas , Brand , American Football
