Ji acknowledged that the city was tightening controls on the swarms of rural migrants in China's capital by stepping up inspections of the permits residents are supposed to have. But "during the Beijing Olympics we will absolutely not restrict outsiders from entering the capital," Ji was quoted as saying at a legislative meeting Friday. The measures, Ji said, are intended to help Beijing clear away air pollution and traffic congestion -- among the thorniest logistical problems Beij... More About: Ease

If you have a taxi driver who doesn't understand you can put him on the phone with a Chinese friend or your hotel. When you arrive at a friend's place but cannot see their door its covenient to ring them. If you order something from a shop they can ring you when its ready. Olympic Torch Relay History, Peking 2008
2008-03-07 16:06:00 The first runner of Olympic Torch , the young athlete Konstantinos Kondylis Fire is a sacred symbol dating back to prehistoric times. In ancient Greece it symbolized the creation of the world, renewal and light. It was also the sacred symbol of Hephaestus, and a gift to the human race from Prometheus, who stole it from Zeus. At the centre of every city-state in ancient Greece there was an altar with an ever-burning fire and in every home the sacred Flame burned, dedicated to Hestia, goddess of the family. Torch Relay races started in ancient Greece as religious rituals held at night. Soon they turned into a team athletic event, initially among adolescents, and further developed to become one of the most popular ancient sports. The enchanting power of fire was a source of inspiration. Sacred flames lit by the rays of the sun always burned in Olympia, in an altar dedicated to Hestia. Fire was ignited with the help of a concave mirror, which has the ability to concentrate the rays of t... More About: History , Peking , 2008

2008 Beijing Olympic: Fewer Vehicles, Cleaner Air
2007-08-22 07:17:00 (BEIJNG, August 21) -- The tests measuring the effect of reduced road traffic over the last four days on air quality were successful, according to Du Shaozhong, deputy director and spokesman for the Beijing Administration of Environmental Protection. For four days, from August 17-20, Beijing restricted the number of motor vehicles on roads, based on license plate numbers.Speaking at Tuesday's press conference, Du attributed the accurate measurement to two factors: 1. The weather was ideal, in that it was not conducive to air pollution dispersion, and allowed for an accurate measurement of the pollution; 2. City residents cooperated and kept more than one million motor vehicles off of roads.Furthermore, said Du, the test results clearly indicate that limiting the number of motor vehicles on roads had a positive effect on improving Beijing's air quality, reducing air pollutants by 15-20%, and thereby achieving level 2 air quality (air pollution index between 50-100) for all four day...
