The Belarussian athletes would strive to win more medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics than at the previous Athens games, an official with the Belarussian National Olympic Committee has said. 'We hope the Belarussian athletes could achieve breakthrough in terms of both gold medal and medal total at the 2008 Beijing games,' said Piotr Rabukhin, the press attache of the Belarussian National Olympic Committee. A scale model of the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympic Games torch was unveiled Thursday. The torch is 29 cm in height and is made of steel left over from the construction of the "Bird's Nest". According to Beijing 2008 it's the first 3-D model of an Olympic torch that has been authorized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). "The Russian Olympic delegation has 900 members, including 400 athletes, coaches and medical staffs," Fetisov said. More than 1,000 athletes from 72 regions of Russia are currently preparing for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, he said. The Russian team has now won licenses for the participation in 23 individual sports at the upcoming Olympics, he said. (BEIJNG, August 21) -- The tests measuring the effect of reduced road traffic over the last four days on air quality were successful, according to Du Shaozhong, deputy director and spokesman for the Beijing Administration of Environmental Protection. For four days, from August 17-20, Beijing restricted the number of motor vehicles on roads, based on license plate numbers.Speaking at Tuesday's press conference, Du attributed the accurate measurement to two factors: 1. The weather was ideal, in that it was not conducive to air pollution dispersion, and allowed for an accurate measurement of the pollution; 2.
