Abu Dhabi GP to be held in October 2009 - Seven-year deal signed

The inaugural Abu Dhabi Grand Prix has been allocated an October race date for 2009, it has emerged. The largest of the seven United Arab Emirates last year penned a minimally seven-year deal for a race, to be held on the man-made Yas Island located to the east of Abu Dhabi island."Spectators will enjoy close, competitive racing played out on three distinct sections of the 5.6km race track. These include high speed areas ending in tight overtaking turns, a street section and a marina section, all of which combine to deliver an unrivalled Formula 1 viewing experience. It will be one of the longest and most demanding tracks in the world, and will include an iconic grandstand hairpin for the ultimate in spectator entertainment," reads an Abu Dhabi Grand Prix press release. After being outdone by McLaren one week earlier, Ferrari fought back at Sepang, locking out the front row of the grid for Sunday's Malaysian GP. Felipe Massa put in a blistering lap to claim pole position by half a second over Kimi Raikkonen as the duo dominated the proceedings. The FIA has released the official entry list for the 2008 season with Kimi Raikkonen driving the number one car after winning the World Championship. After being committed from the 2007 Constructors', McLaren's cars will wear numbers 22 and 23. Although the list confirms that Takuma Sato and Anthony Davidson will race for Super Aguri, the Japanese team have denied that these drivers have signed contracts for the coming season. Ferrari this afternoon officially launched its 2008 challenger which is to be called the F2008. The first preview images show a relatively traditional swooping front wing as well as a fairly standard rear element. Undoubtedly new model on display will undergo further aerodynamic enhancements ahead of the season opener in Melbourne. The sidepods do however appear visibly changed over its predecessor with a raised front aspect with various aero additions to the front aimed to create maximum cooling efficiency as well as the all-important flow of air around the car. Ferrari's new car for 2008 will be an "evolution" of its championship winning predecessor, according to chief designer Nicolas Tombazis. The Greek 39-year-old, who returned to Maranello early last year following a stint at McLaren, told the Spanish newspaper Diario AS that the F2008 will feature a shorter wheelbase than the 2007 car when it is revealed on 6 January."Much has changed, although the car will be an evolution of the previous one," Tombazis said."In 2007 we were faster on the fast circuits than on those with predominantly slower curves. Michael Schumacher has suggested that his brother Ralf takes a sabbatical from F1 and re-evaluate his future. The younger of the Schumachers left Toyota at the end of the 2007 season and is currently without a drive for the new season. Although linked with teams at both ends of the grid, it seems unlikely that the 32-year-old will find a race seat. Schumacher did test for Force India at Jerez, but his time in Spain was marred by errors and technical problems. His sibling and seven-time World Champions believes that Ralf should be careful of joining a team near the back of the gird. The AT&T Williams team today confirmed that Kazu ki Nakajima will race for the team in the final Grand Prix of the 2007 season at Interlagos in Brazil in a fortnight’s time. The 22-year old Japanese driver, this year’s GP2 series Rookie of the Year, is the team’s official test and reserve driver. He has covered over 7,000km in the FW29 in testing and has represented the team at five Grands Prix as a Friday driver. It was a hectic day today at the Fuji Motor Speedway. After 45 minutes behind the safety car the field was cleared to race. With heavy rains it was a brilliant race to watch. Eventually rookie Lewis Hamilton was strongest while teammate Alonso crashed into the barriers. Ferrari president Luca Montezemolo dedicated his team's Belgian Grand Prix win to the photocopy shop worker who sparked the spy saga. The furore that led to McLaren being fined £50million and stripped of all their Constructors' points for this year was instigated by a tip-off to Ferrari. A 780-page technical dossier belonging to the Italian team was taken to the shop by Trudy Coughlan, wife of suspended McLaren chief designer Mike Coughlan, to be formatted onto computer disk. Kimi Raikkonen 's splendid victory at Spa has put him back into the title race, and the Finn reckons he can trump Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso. With just three Grand Prix to go, the Ferrari driver is now 13 points adrift of Championship leader Hamilton, and he is optimistic that he has a chance.
