Abu Dhabi GP to be held in October 2009 - Seven-year deal signed
2008-04-12 09:28:00 The inaugural Abu Dhabi Grand Prix has been allocated an October race date for 2009, it has emerged. The largest of the seven United Arab Emirates last year penned a minimally seven-year deal for a race, to be held on the man-made Yas Island located to the east of Abu Dhabi island."Spectators will enjoy close, competitive racing played out on three distinct sections of the 5.6km race track. These include high speed areas ending in tight overtaking turns, a street section and a marina section, all of which combine to deliver an unrivalled Formula 1 viewing experience. It will be one of the longest and most demanding tracks in the world, and will include an iconic grandstand hairpin for the ultimate in spectator entertainment," reads an Abu Dhabi Grand Prix press release. The Daily Telegraph newspaper this week revealed that the 2009 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, title-sponsored by Ferrari backer Etihad Airways, will be held in October next year. It was previously believed that the race co... More About: Signed , Deal , Year

Qualy Malaysian F1 GP: It's pole position for Felipe Massa
2008-03-22 08:31:00 After being outdone by McLaren one week earlier, Ferrari fought back at Sepang, locking out the front row of the grid for Sunday's Malaysian GP. Felipe Massa put in a blistering lap to claim pole position by half a second over Kimi Raikkonen as the duo dominated the proceedings. McLaren drivers Heikki Kovalainen and Lewis Hamilton were third and fourth as the latter especially struggled with an ill-behaving car. Jarno Trulli and Robert Kubica again showed their respective speeds, claiming fifth and sixth places on the grid. Full report to follow... Times01 F. Massa Ferrari 1:35.748 02 K. Raikkonen eyes title repeat - Massa happy with his new 'baby'
2008-01-06 18:11:00 Kimi Raikkonen believes that his thrilling, last-gap Formula One triumph in 2007 can provide the platform for a title repeat this season. The Finn, speaking as Ferrari unveiled their car for the 2008 campaign, says being world champion has given him a new sense of belief following his one-point victory over feuding McLaren pair Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso."The fact that I won the drivers' world title last year gives me the confidence that I can do it again," said Raikkonen. "But I don't feel any stronger than last year."The Finn admitted he will need a bit of time to adjust to the new car."The cockpit is a bit straighter, there's lots of innovations, above all we've lost traction control and it will be a bit difficult to control in the wet," he said. "There's still changes to be made but that's the same with every new car.""We're ready and with (team-mate Felipe) Massa we have a good atmosphere and we'll try to keep that and fight to the end to retain our titles. F2007 weakness solved, designer says
2008-01-03 13:10:00 Ferrari's new car for 2008 will be an "evolution" of its championship winning predecessor, according to chief designer Nicolas Tombazis. The Greek 39-year-old, who returned to Maranello early last year following a stint at McLaren, told the Spanish newspaper Diario AS that the F2008 will feature a shorter wheelbase than the 2007 car when it is revealed on 6 January."Much has changed, although the car will be an evolution of the previous one," Tombazis said."In 2007 we were faster on the fast circuits than on those with predominantly slower curves. We have worked on the weakness and solved it," he added.Tombazis also rejected suggestions that Kimi Raikkonen, Ferrari's new world champion who joined the Italian team in 2007, faced internal criticism for his failure to communicate effectively with the team."Kimi speaks little, but he says important things," Tombazis remarked, also explaining the Finn's apparent difficulty to adapt to Ferrari life early in 2007."The change from Michel... Alonso set to rejoin Renault this week
2007-12-16 16:11:00 Monday 10th December 2007 Fernando Alonso 's return to Renault is expected to be confirmed within the next 48 hours. According to reports, the Spaniard has agreed a £70m, three-year contract. However, the deal contains an opt-out clause that would enable Alonso to leave the team in twelve months' time. Alonso's return to Renault, two years after he left Flavio Briatore's outfit, became a likelihood when the team escaped punishment at last week's World Motor Sport Council hearing. 'It is a pleasing outcome for Alonso, who maintains his status as the second-highest earner on the grid behind Ferrari's world champion, Kimi Raikkonen, five weeks after being dismissed by McLaren,' says The Daily Mail. After months of uncertainty and speculation, all the final pieces for the 2008 driver line-up are falling into place. Nico Rosberg has committed himself to Williams, leaving Pedro de la Rosa the favourite to partner Lewis Hamilton at McLaren next season. However, Alonso's return to ... More About: Week
Michael suggests a sabbatical for Ralf
2007-12-16 15:59:00 Michael Schumacher has suggested that his brother Ralf takes a sabbatical from F1 and re-evaluate his future. The younger of the Schumachers left Toyota at the end of the 2007 season and is currently without a drive for the new season. Although linked with teams at both ends of the grid, it seems unlikely that the 32-year-old will find a race seat. Schumacher did test for Force India at Jerez, but his time in Spain was marred by errors and technical problems. His sibling and seven-time World Champions believes that Ralf should be careful of joining a team near the back of the gird. "I don't know all his options, but before he drives like he did yesterday it is better to think about if it makes sense to drive knowing you can only come last," Schumacher told Auto Motor und Sport. "I think there are more reasonable, safer, wealthier and nicer options for him. I told him personally that there are so many nice things outside of F1. But I don't know all his options. There are other cock... More About: Michael

As three drivers fight for the Drivers’ crown, this weekend’s race promises to be the most compelling of the season. With the battle for the other Championship positions still on-going, AT&T Williams will be drawing on a wealth of experience attained in Brazil. The team has won one in five of all Brazilian Grand Prix entered, set 34% of all fastest laps and secured one in three pole positions. Massa doubts he'll need to help Kimi in Brazil
2007-10-16 13:51:00 Felipe Massa said on Wednesday that his Ferrari teammate Kimi Raikkonen is unlikely to emerge with the world championship from next weekend's season finale in Brazil . He became the first Brazilian since Ayrton Senna to win at home a year ago, but Massa promised to defer to the 27-year-old Finn next Sunday if it will help Ferrari secure the other 2007 title.Raikkonen winning the title would require both Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso to strike major trouble at Interlagos, and Massa told a news conference in Sao Paulo on Wednesday: "I don't think that will happen."But if the miracle happens I'll be glad to help the team."I work for Ferrari, so I'll do what I can to help Kimi, but I'll drive to win the race."It would be great to win it for the fans again," he said.
Kazuki Nakajima replaces Wurz in Brazil
2007-10-16 13:29:00 The AT&T Williams team today confirmed that Kazu ki Nakajima will race for the team in the final Grand Prix of the 2007 season at Interlagos in Brazil in a fortnight’s time. The 22-year old Japanese driver, this year’s GP2 series Rookie of the Year, is the team’s official test and reserve driver. He has covered over 7,000km in the FW29 in testing and has represented the team at five Grands Prix as a Friday driver. The intention behind Kazuki’s nomination is to build and develop his experience and is not an evaluation exercise for a race seat in 2008. AT&T Williams Team Principal, Frank Williams, said, “You cannot assess a driver’s capability on the basis of one race but this is an ideal opportunity to develop Kazuki’s experience. I am confident he will approach the race in a very workmanlike and focused way.” For his part, Kazuki Nakajima said, “I am very grateful to the team who have given me this opportunity. Japanese GP - Not a good race for Ferrari
2007-10-16 03:01:00 Todt: "Our choice would probably have been very different" Ferrari - Ferrari's team principal Jean Todt and sporting director Stefano Domenicali were at pains to point out that there was little that they could do after an e-mail message went astray prior to the Chinese Grand Prix, necessitating both Kimi Raikkonen and Felipe Massa to make an early supplementary pit stop in Sunday's Japanese Grand Prix. The extra pit stop seriously comprised the team's chances, resulting in third (Kimi Raikkonen) and sixth (Felipe Massa) places. The e-mail contained vital information asking all teams to use Bridgestone's extreme wet weather tyre, but Ferrari started both drivers on the normal wet weather tyre, and had to pit to change tyres. Japanese GP: Hamilton wins rain dance, Alonso crashes

Eventually rookie Lewis Hamilton was strongest while teammate Alonso crashed into the barriers. Ferrari dedicate win to whistle-blower
2007-09-19 17:21:00 Ferrari president Luca Montezemolo dedicated his team's Belgian Grand Prix win to the photocopy shop worker who sparked the spy saga. The furore that led to McLaren being fined £50million and stripped of all their Constructors' points for this year was instigated by a tip-off to Ferrari. A 780-page technical dossier belonging to the Italian team was taken to the shop by Trudy Coughlan, wife of suspended McLaren chief designer Mike Coughlan, to be formatted onto computer disk. With suspicions aroused, the worker contacted the Maranello team, and from that moment a scandal that has overshadowed Formula One was born. Montezemolo, thrilled by Kimi Raikkonen's triumph, said: "It's a perfect victory, for which I want to thank Raikkonen, (Felipe) Massa, (team boss Jean) Todt and all these guys. "I want to dedicate it to our fans who believe in the fairness of the sport and to this English gentleman, who in the month of June, wanted to inform us that someone linked to an opponent team ... Raikkonen: We are still in the hunt
More articles from this author:2007-09-19 17:17:00 Kimi Raikkonen 's splendid victory at Spa has put him back into the title race, and the Finn reckons he can trump Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso. With just three Grand Prix to go, the Ferrari driver is now 13 points adrift of Championship leader Hamilton, and he is optimistic that he has a chance. "We haven't given up and are still in the hunt," said the Finn following the Belgian Grand Prix. "We reduced the gap again. We lost a bit in the last race but anything can happen. There are still three races to go, everyone is so close and we will fight hard and sometimes things can go wrong for all of us. "We will keep pushing and see what happens. If we do it will be amazing but we will keep pushing and we don't give up." He continued: "We knew that we were going to be much stronger here than in Monza. We know the reasons why we cannot challenge them in circuits like Monza, Monaco and Montreal. "We are trying to fix the problems for next year and then we can be pretty strong. Here ...
