'Mark Doctors' -- Physicians who juice the dopers
2007-06-29 16:24:00 An interesting picture continues to emerge of the shadowy world of doping, entertainment, and sports. A report from the LA Times looks at Chris Benoit's doctor, whom Benoit visited immediately prior to his homisuicide rampage. The Times speculates that Benoit's doctor may face legal charges. As noted yesterday, local and federal agents raided Dr. Phil Astin's office Wednesday night and into the Thursday morning hours: Benoit's Carrollton, Ga.-based physician, Phil Astin, told the Associated Press on Wednesday that he met with the World Wrestling Entertainment star last Friday and previously had prescribed him testosterone to boost levels of the hormone that were in decline — probably caused by prior steroid use. Less than 24 hours later, the Drug Enforcement Administration raided Astin's office, focusing on whether Benoit's medical records showed he was prescribed steroids, and if so, whether the prescription was necessary, a law enforcement source told the AP.... Griffey moves past McGwire in homers; Frank Thomas conquers 500 HR mark
2007-06-29 06:08:00 Quietly Ken Griffy moved past Mark McGwire last week. Grif now sits 16 dingers shy of 600. He maintained the same slender athletic physique over his entire MLB career unlike that other fellow who knocked out #600 for the Rangers last week, or even the guy who hits homers in San Francisco. You know the two who either once, or now, look bloated. Hal Brodley at USA Today writes about Griffey , who demands natural respect in a day of unnatural achievement. While Barry Bonds approaches Hank Aaron's career home run record and Sammy Sosa celebrates No. 600, both under the dark clouds of steroid allegations, Junior Griffey is refreshing. There's never been a hint he's used performance-enhancing chemicals. And maybe because of that he gets little attention these days — or appreciation — for his accomplishments and great talent. He entered Thursday night 16 homers shy of 600 and you have to wonder where he'd be if injuries hadn't kept him out of 435 games d... More About: Thomas , Past , Frank Thomas
Benoit story morphs into bizarro world
2007-06-29 01:12:00 The Nation's interest in the Benoit homisuicide stems from the involvement of anabolic steroids, and other PEDs. However, the entire spectre of weirdness in this story appears on the verge of some dark mystery. The latest developments: 1. ABC News (and other outlets) now report that someone altered the wrestler's Wiki-entry to state that Benoit's wife died; this alteration came a full 14 hours before the bodies were discovered. Further -- the alteration came from a computer whose IP address can be traced to Stamford CT, the home of Mr. McMahon and the WWE, Benoit's employer. On June 28, FOXNews.com reported that news of Nancy Daus' death was posted on Wikipedia half a day before the police discovered the bodies. The posting reads: “Chris Benoit was replaced by Johnny Nitro for the ECW Championship match at Vengeance, as Benoit was not there due to personal issues, stemming from the death of his wife Nancy.” The phrase "stemming from the de... Law officers raid Benoit's doctor's office
2007-06-28 20:52:00 The Benoit story changes course almost by the hour. It is now reported nationally that local law enforcement and the DEA raided a Dr. Astin's office near Atlanta. Astin's name was found on prescriptions at the Benoit's home following the homisuicide. FOX 5 News has learned that drug agents have raided the office of the personal physician of wrestler Chris Benoit. Pro wrestling cleverly distracting attention in Benoit case
2007-06-28 15:00:00 The pro wrestling establishment (WWE) is feeding the media a story about stress in the Benoit family, with the suggestion caring for a child with Fragile X leads to murder-suicide. While undeniably true that a child with developmental problems can be very stressful, we have never seen a murder-suicide in a family that stressed. We would suggest the culture of violence within pro wrestling, the use of drugs that cause mental status changes, and other drugs that increase aggressiveness would constitute more important factors than familial stress (which is common) in this crime(photo from the Daily News). We hope that the American public, along with the press, doesn't buy a superficial explanation forwarded by an organization that continues to be irresponsible and completely mercenary. The chief crook of pro wrestling, McMahon, faked his own death in a violent episode just a couple weeks prior to the Benoit episode. McMahon pushes the working schedule to exhaust his em... Benoit saw doctor Friday; Family struggled with Fragile X son
2007-06-28 00:54:00 More information comes out almost by the hour. The AP found Chris Benoit 's physician who said the pro wrestler stopped in on Frida y before the homisuicide. The doctor also said that he prescribed low doses of testosterone for low endogenous hormones in Benoit. Wonder if the doctor knew Benoit received Internet PEDs? Professional wrestler Chris Benoit met with his personal physician hours before he allegedly killed his wife and son and then hanged himself in his basement, the doctor said Wednesday. "He was in my office on Friday to stop by just to see my staff," said Dr. Phil Astin of metro Atlanta. "He certainly didn't show any signs of any distress or rage or anything." Authorities say Benoit strangled his wife, suffocated his 7-year-old son Daniel and placed a Bible next to their bodies before hanging himself with a weight-machine pulley over the weekend. No motive was offered for the killings, which were spread out over the weekend and di... More About: Family , Doctor
Mutiple concussions and psychotic behavior
2007-06-27 21:28:00 The New York Times carries a piece on the Benoit homisuicide today. The Times outlined the usual situation details. However, it is worth reading and noting the thoughts of former pro wrestler -- and author of 'Head Games' -- Christopher Nowinski on Benoit's behavior. Nowinski suggests that Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy may play a role in the wrestler's behavior. Nowinski also urges the coroner to perform a detailed post-mortem examination on Benoit's central nervous system (CNS): ...Christopher Nowinski, a former professional wrestler who worked with Mr. Benoit, and who was forced to quit because of head injuries, said he believed that repeated, untreated concussions might have caused his friend to snap. “He was one of the only guys who would take a chair shot to the back of the head,” Mr. Nowinski said, “which is stupid.” Mr. Nowinski has written a book called “Head Games: Football’s Concussion Crisis” (Drummond Publishing Group, 2006), ... Steve Austin's ex-wife claims steroid use and abuse common in pro wrestling
2007-06-27 13:57:00 We suppose this is in the 'obvious' category, as the ex-wife of Steve Austin came out late yesterday with her own story of abuse at the hands of the famous WWF wrestler. Debra Williams who divorced former Chicago Bear Steve McMichaels to enter into marital bliss with Steve Austin says juice and pro wrestling cause domestic violence (My Fox Colorado):"He did them, I saw him do them!" said Debra Williams, ex-wife of the World Wrestling Entertainment star Stone Cold Steve Austin. Ms. Williams says, "The domestic and drug abuse is out of hand in the WWE and something needs to be done about it."Will the Benoit homisuicides lead to more juice and tell and beat stories from the world of pro wrestling? NFL says only four percent of retired NFL players disabled
2007-06-27 13:43:00 That's right, only 4% of retired NFL players suffer from disability requiring disability supplementation from their owners and player's association. Four percent seems low for a violent sport that produces career-ending injuries. The group of NFL veterans lobbying the league to loosen up the pension purse took their case to Congress yesterday. AS ESPN reports, at least the NFL agreed to loosen requirements to match US Social Security regs. The NFL likes to hold on to it's 1.1 billion pension fund, only doling out 20 million to about 300 disabled players last year. The Washington Post says the former players found a sympathetic ear in US Rep Maxine Waters, (CA) whose husband, Sidney Williams played for the 49ers.Then Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) a member of the Judiciary Committee but not the subcommittee itself, asked Douglas Ell, counsel for the NFLPA and the disability plan, how many players actually receive disability payments."317,&... Florida Internet pharmacies -- Signature and MedXLife -- now implicated in
2007-06-27 04:01:00 Florida Intern et pharmacies now appear to have ties to pro wrestler Chris Benoit, the Albany Times-Union reported late Tuesday. Georgia authorities released information that Benoit, the WWE pro wrestler involved as the perpetrator of the Atlanta area murder-suicide of his son and wife, possessed 'prescription steroids' in his home. It was also noted that Benoit's son bore evidence of HGH injections. If any forensic evidence exists of Internet drug involvement in the commission of the crime at Benoit's home, Signature Pharmacy, MedXLife, and several physicians in Florida could feel more than journalistic heat. Obviously Benoit used PEDs extensively. However can authorities tie PEDs into his lethal ?psychotic behavior last weekend? Further, did any professional monitor the PEDs if they were 'prescription'? Florida Internet pharmacies, implicated in delivering steroids and HGH to MLB players and other athletes, surfaced in the Albany T-U in this report ... More About: Florida , Cate , Harm

The Houston Chronicle and AP: Pro wrestler Chris Benoit strangled his wife, suffocated his 7-year-old son and placed a Bible next to their bodies before hanging himself with the pulley of a weightlifting machine, authorities said Tuesday. Investigators found prescription anabolic steroids in the house and want to know whether the muscle man was unhinged by the drugs, which can cause paranoia, depression and explosive outbursts known as "roid rage." Authorities offered no motive for the killings, which were spread out over a weekend, and would not discuss Benoit's motive or state of mind. Romo gets some sick (?slick) promo
2007-06-26 14:34:00 Now on your radio sports talk circuit dial, promos featuring Bill Romanowski (Romo ) . Romo must be short of cash. His apologetic (some say not so apologetic) highness surfaced on Kevin Cowherd the other day promoting his book, his new supplements, and a movie where he plays a gay cowboy. Romo 'sorta' discussed remorse for his past wayward behavior. The Boston Globe carries a story on Romo's new vitamins and supplements: Romanowski, who played for the 49ers, Eagles, Broncos, and Raiders, retired at the end of that season, and set out to reverse the effects of years of violent collisions. He had strengthened his body throughout his NFL career with supplements -- including THG and ephedrine -- that sometimes straddled the line of legality, and Romanowski hoped he could build up his mind as well. He consulted doctors and scientists, taking their advice and combining it into a homemade product. "[I was] a little bit of a mad scientist," Roma... More About: Promo , Sick , Some
Feel like being Jason Giambi for a night?
2007-06-26 01:23:00 The St Paul Saints of the American Association, up in chilly Minnesota announced a fan promotion that will needle you. A fan can choose between a Bud Selig suspension or a George Mitchell probe. That sounds like a lose-lose proposition. The St. Paul Saints today announced the ultimate fan experience: the opportunity to find out what it's like to be a Major League baseball player in this era of speculation, accusation and investigation. Each fan attending the Saints game on Saturday, July 7, will have the choice between being "probed" by George Mitchell or being "suspender'd" by Bud Selig. Outside the front gates of Midway Stadium, USA Today reporters will interview fans, looking for a good quote about past indiscretions. After making seemingly innocuous comments about past substance abuse, fans will enter the ballpark and make the same choice Jason Giambi currently faces: sit down with George Mitchell (from Roseville, Minnesota) or face dis... Noteworthy baseball shorts
2007-06-25 16:52:00 Drew Sharp of the Detroit Freep says owners should be held accountable too for the juiced mess in MLB. Baseball owes everyone an apology for engaging in a practice that, although it never violated documented league policy, compromised the spirit of open and upfront competition. It's not just the players. It's the owners who looked the other way as they counted their millions. It's the fans who didn't care as they continually filled ballparks. You can't put the past behind you until you finally acknowledge that it existed. Should Giambi become the first active player to finally and clearly admit that he used steroids, that doesn't mean the game has finally purged its soul with one sacrificial attack of conscience. It's merely taking a long-awaited first step down that path. Not baseball, but Dick Cheney is called 'Hypocrisy on steroids' by The American Daily. Steroids in baseball: Mythology rules
2007-06-24 18:31:00 You read it everyday "steroids (anabolic steroids) were not banned in baseball (choose one) when McGwire and Sosa compiled the summer of '98 when Bonds hit 73 home runs until 2003" Wrong. Fay Vincent sent out a memo in 1991 with the official MLB policy (ESPN): A year earlier Congress had raised penalties for possessing those and 25 other anabolics. But now the stuff violated baseball's rules, too. On June 7, 1991, commissioner Fay Vincent sent a memo to each team and the players union that stated: "The possession, sale or use of any illegal drug or controlled substance by Major League players or personnel is strictly prohibited ... This prohibition applies to all illegal drugs ... including steroids." The seven-page document didn't cover random testing -- that had to be bargained with the union -- but it did outline treatment and penalties.MLB Commissioner Bud Selig reissued the policy in 1997. Marion Jones is flat broke
2007-06-23 22:41:00 The LA Times runs a story telling us that since her recent BALCO and other legal problems, Mari on Jones is flat...broke. Jones initiated fire sales of several homes in North Carolina. Problems started with several lawsuits including her BALCO defense, one against Victor Conte, and last year's doping fight defense. At the pinnacle of her success, Olympic sprinter Marion Jones set records for female athletes, signed multimillion-dollar endorsement deals and adorned the covers of national magazines. Vogue declared her "The New American Hero" in a cover story featuring Jones in a $2,000 designer dress. But seven summers after her dominance of the Sydney Games, where she won a women's record five medals — three of them gold — Jones has disappeared from track and field. Her days of competitive glory have given way to suspicions of performance-enhancing drug use. And now comes word that she's heavily in debt, fighting off court judgments and down to a bank ... New Zealand about to effect new anti-doping law.
2007-06-23 21:54:00 Story here at the NZ Herald site, and discussion here at Track and Field News. The important point of this law is that the regulation break free of the out-moded idea of a positive urine test needed to 'prove' doping. It as to be recognized that the drug-cheats generally are way ahead of the testing authorities. The new Sports Anti -Doping Act, which comes into force next week, will give Drug Free Sport NZ (DFSNZ) much wider responsibilities to explore potential breaches of all eight anti-doping rule violations. These include trafficking, assisting, evading and so on. This moves us beyond the sole reliance on positive tests to determine whether or not doping is occurring. It will require the organisation to liaise closely with other bodies, notably police and customs, to ensure that information which may be relevant is made available. It will have the responsibility to investigate any and all evidence that doping may be occurring in New Zealand or by New Zealand athle... More About: Effect , Alan

Tainted or untainted? Double records in track discussed
2007-06-21 22:56:00 Track records became so distorted with presumptive doping, that officials now talk about keeping a set of double records: presumably steroid and then presumably clean. Very very good story in the Indy Star today. (also this link to Track and Field News) The sport appears to be addressing how PEDs (preformance enhancing drugs; or APEDs (appearance +PED) affect the top performances, and how that cheat clean athletes attempting to break those records.Should the world's oldest sport start anew? So many records in track and field are implausible, presumably because of undetected doping, that they are out of reach. Unlike baseball, which is stuck with bloated home run figures from a steroid era, track has the authority to clean the slate. Governing bodies have invalidated records set by athletes caught using drugs. For instance we carried a story concerning Sanya Richards who ran a 48.7 last year. From the Miami Herald.com via the AP: CROMWELL, Conn. -- The PGA Tour is getting closer to a rule on performance-enhancing drugs, and with testing likely to follow, commissioner Tim Finchem says golf organizations around the world should make sure they're on the same page. Even with Tiger Woods among those in favor of drug testing to prove golf is clean, Finchem has defended the tour's lack of plan because he has found no evidence of performance-enhancing drugs or evidence of players using them. He conceded, however, that drug testing in sports has become a reality. "It's unfortunate that these realities are with us, but they are," Finchem said Wednesday at the Travelers Championship. Sosa's feat goes noted here in the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) -- Sammy Sosa's 600th homer resembled so many that came before - except this time the Chicago Cubs were on the other side. After driving a 1-2 pitch to right-center for a solo shot in the fifth inning, Slammin' Sammy bounced out of the batter's box with his trademark hop and thrust his right fist into the air before reaching first base. He was mobbed at home plate by his teammates while the scoreboard showed pictures of all five members of the elite club: Hank Aaron, Barry Bonds, Babe Ruth, Willie Mays and Sosa. How delicious is this irony?
