Greek lifters trying to destroy their livers
2008-04-07 21:43:00 Reports from Greece indicate elite Greek weightlifters were nailed with nasty anabolics last week. A Greek athletic site discusses the situation (Hellenic Athletes): More details have emerged in the doping scandal that has once again rocked Greece, as well as news this morning that the "B" sample results are expected next Wednesday. Three types of substances have reportedly been detected in the 11 Greek weightlifters whose “A” samples came back positive. The first is reported to be methyltrienolone, a potent anabolic steroid. This particular substance had been linked in the late 1960’s to as manyas 200 deaths, due to high toxicity of the liver, and was withdrawn a few years later. The second substance is reported to be an opiate, used to purge the body of the drug-addiction tendencies of methyltrienolone. The third is reported to be an estrogen suppressor, which resembles testosteroneHowever, there could be tainted supplements involved:Michalis ...
Cache of drugs -- HGH & steroids -- found in Atlanta home once owned by
2008-04-07 14:21:00 A stash of drugs (HGH, steroids) found in house once owned by WWE wrestler. Fox Atlanta carries the story. Henry County Police are investigating what a Locust Grove man says he found inside his home. He turned over to police several bottles that were labeled as containing human growth hormones. The man also gave police numerous syringes and other materials that investigators say could belong to a W.W.E. wrestler. "I had never looked in here and so she was gonna put her stuff in here and just looked back in here and the boxes were just sitting there," said the homeowner. The Atlanta area, home to many WWE wrestlers, seems to be a hotbed of steroid activity. Chris Benoit lived there. Surprise, the baby is sucking on some masternon:The homeowner was referring to two shoe boxes that contained several small bottles labeled as testosterone, neomasteron -- which is also an anabolic steroid -- some bottles with no markings at all and there were numerous unopen... Studies suggest anabolic steroids produce long term changes in muscle struc
2008-04-06 17:20:00 The Wall Street Journal dug up an interesting study from Umea University. The study from the Department of Integrative Medical Biology at Umea (Sweden) demonstrated long term muscle changes in anabolic steroids users -- despite current abstinence. The WSJ related these changes to MLB stats. (here) In the study, which was completed in October 2006 by the Department of Integrative Medical Biology at Sweden's Umea University, researchers took muscle biopsies from 26 elite powerlifters who have competed at the sport's highest levels. Ten of the volunteers said they were not steroid users, but the other 16 had either admitted using these drugs in the past or said they were currently using them. Not only is it unusual for scientists to study elite athletes of any kind, it's almost impossible to study top athletes who are using steroids in competition. When the researchers looked at the subjects' muscles through a microscope, they made a surprising discovery: Rather th... Photographic memory: more info on the Canseco/Clemens party photos
2008-04-06 16:10:00 More information concerning the Canseco Party in 1998 where Roger Clemens talked steroids (and may have used some) emerged today. This story takes on legendary status as the weeks go on. The controversy seems trivial: so what if Clemens attended some goofy Party at Canseco's house? Two important points: The fact of Clemens attending the Canseco party starts the true/false controversy. This represents the beginning of the Clemens steroid story in the gospel according to trainer McNamee. One person is not truthful about the fact. Both testified under oath on his side of the truth. At the party, McNamee says The Rocket learned about steroid use, although others say he was already an knowledgeable juice consumer. Now reports says Clemens may have juiced at the party. The New York Daily News contends that IRS/BALCO investigator Jeff Novitzky possesses photographs of both Canseco and Clemens putting them at th party seen with a teenage fan. Two photogr... True Lies: Tammy Thomas convicted of perjury and obstruction
2008-04-05 04:53:00 An angry Tammy Thomas heard San Francisco jurors convict her of lying to BALCO investigators this afternoon. Thomas, who used so much anabolic steroid she needed to shave (? brand of shaving cream) her beard, grew hair on her cheat, lowered her voice, and grew her genitalia, deceived the investigators looking into the BALCO operation that snared a number of Bay Area and national elite athletes. From the San Francisco Chronicle: Former cyclist Tammy Thomas was convicted Friday of lying to a grand jury investigating a steroid distribution ring that has implicated some of the biggest stars in baseball, football and track. Thomas, the first figure connected to the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative case to go to trial, shouted at the jury after being found guilty of three counts of perjury and a count of obstruction of justice. She was acquitted of two counts of perjury.Apparently not realizing she controlled her own destiny both when she took illegal anabolic drugs, and when ... More About: True , Lies
Over-60 bodybuilders: some naturally clean, some steroided dirty
2008-04-04 14:40:00 The New York Times carries a story on 'geriatric bodybuilders', most of whom promote clean bodybuilding.... Dr. Grossman, a 60-year-old Baltimore dentist, is a competitive amateur bodybuilder, an extra ounce of flab makes the difference between a sizable trophy and going home empty-handed. “The minute you start winning, that’s all the validation people need to accept what you do as legitimate and something to be appreciated,” said Dr. Grossman, who is 5-foot-2 and a chiseled 121 pounds. He is one of a small but growing number of 60- and 70-year-old bodybuilders stripping down to Speedos, slathering on bronzer, and strutting their stuff onstage in natural, or drug-free, competitions. The season for amateur and pro-level events begins this month. Last year, the World Natural Sports Organization, one of about a dozen bodybuilding groups devoted to drug-free contests, had 44 competitors older than 60, up from two in 2000, said Jeffrey Kippel, a founder. Jose Canseco: Smoking in the boys room
2008-04-04 06:08:00 USA Today says MLB authorities caught up with Jose Canseco in the boys room, ostensibly to talk about steroids. Story here: Admitted steroid user and author Jose Canseco met with two members of the newly-formed Major League Baseball Department of Investigations just prior to a book signing at a Manhattan bookstore on Wednesday. Canseco, who ended his 17-year major league career in 2001 with the Chicago White Sox, said the meeting with MLB on Wednesday left him "extremely shocked, because the timing seems to be incredible." Canseco rode an escalator to the second floor of the bookstore and was ushered into a bathroom a little after noon. Inside, Canseco, wearing dark glasses and a shirt barely concealing his muscular build, discussed steroids with senior investigators Victor Burgos and Eduardo Dominguez. They discussed the steroids issue with Canseco but it was not certain whether or not he would be involved with MLB's attempts to tackle the issue in any role or if the ... Waiting for the bloody syringes: McNamee puts up Clemens memorabilia on Eba
2008-04-03 13:15:00 In a brilliant move to clean out the garage, and raise some much needed cash, ex-Roger Clemens trainer Brian McNamee is putting up some of the Rocket's goodies for sale on Ebay: Autographed baseball and an autographed photo. Don't fret on time, there is over a day left to submit a bid (Paypal accepted)(Update: only 13 hours left to bid) McNamee says the proceeds will go to charity...may we suggest our charity (address given upon request). Tammy Thomas trial goes to jury
2008-04-03 12:47:00 The Tammy Thomas trial goes to jury in San Francisco. (Bloomberg) ``This case is about holding Ms. Thomas responsible for those false statements,'' Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeff Nedrow told a San Francisco federal jury today. ``This prosecution is not about steroids, it's not about sports. You cannot go into the grand jury and make false statements.'' Thomas is also charged with obstructing the federal probe. Prosecutors said Thomas was the link between Bay Area Laboratory Cooperative, a lab known as Balco, and Patrick Arnold, an Illinois chemist who made drugs for the lab. Her lawyers say she testified truthfully, any substances she took were legal at the time she took them and her testimony wasn't material to the grand jury probe. To convict her, jurors have to agree that her testimony was material, or could have influenced the grand jury, according to the judge's instructions. ``The government has miscas... More About: Trial

Will Romo go roid rage on Florida man who hijacked his body?
2008-04-02 15:10:00 A Florida man passed off a photo of 'roid rager Bill Romanowski, to pass himself off as a former Oakland Raider. Problem was the guy tops out at 5-10, where Romo comes in at a 'roided-up 6-4, 240. To the Palm Beach Post: When Ed McCabe masqueraded as a retired professional football player, he lifted the image of one of the most colorful and controversial characters of the NFL. McCabe, who organized charity golf tournaments while pretending to be a former Oakland Raider, downloaded a photograph of Bill Romanowski, who played for the Raiders from 2002 to 2003. McCabe altered the No. 53 to his fantasy league No. 29. And, voilà, Romanowski was transformed into Ed McCabe, who claimed to be a member of the Raiders during their 1980 championship season. Last week, McCabe acknowledged to The Palm Beach Post that he never appeared in an NFL game and did not play college football, but maintained that the photo was taken during a 1980 tryout with the Raiders. 2008-04-01 22:39:00 A new twist on the Tammy Thomas BALCO perjury trial emerged over the past few days. Thomas is currently a law student at the University of Oklahoma. If convicted of perjury and obstruction in this trial, one would think her admission to a state bar would be significantly at risk. Ken Griffey comments on steroids and HGH
2008-04-01 17:46:00 From the Seattle Times comes an interview with Ken Griffey Jr. This is a player who really qualifies as the best baseball player of the past 20 years. Griffey discusses steroids and PEDs: Q. With this being the era of steroids and HGH, your name never surfaces, not even in a whispered rumor. What does that mean to you? A. It comes from the sense of pride when my dad [Ken Griffey Sr.] played. The biggest thing was that my dad wasn't a superstar. He was an All-Star, but not a superstar. And that helped because he always told me, "I'm going to work hard, my name is never going to be mentioned with doing anything wrong. I go out there and play and do it right." He told me I'd never be the biggest guy on the team, never be the strongest on the team, never be the fastest on the team. Lawyers press IRS agent Novitzky in Tammy Thomas trial
2008-04-01 15:15:00 So you can lie to investigators if there exists other evidence, right? So the government should not concern itself with the integrity of professional sports? Those are the hind-sight arguments of Tammy Thomas 's legal team in the BALCO-perjury trial ongoing in San Francisco. The San Jose Mercury-News and the New York Daily News cover the case. Internal Revenue Service agent Jeff Novitzky, for the past five years on the hunt for steroids in sports, faced his first hostile questioning for his role in BALCO as he testified in the perjury trial of former world-class cyclist Tammy Thomas. Novitzky has put the squeeze on superstars ranging from former San Francisco Giants slugger Barry Bonds to Olympic track and field star Marion Jones, but he spent the second day of his testimony in Thomas' trial fending off suggestions that he abused his power as a criminal investigator to clean up doping in sports. Ethan Balogh, Thomas' lawyer, cross-examined Novitzky on whether he improper... More About: Agent , Lawyers , Press , Trial
Missouri lawmaker wants mandated suspensions for pro steroid users

KWMU with the story: JEFFERSON CITY, MO (2008-03-31) A St. Louis area lawmaker plans to file legislation that, if passed, could make it harder for the Cardinals, Rams and other Missouri sports teams to get tax breaks. State Representative Jeff Roorda (Dem, Barnhart) says his bill would bar franchises from receiving state tax credits if they don't suspend players caught using anabolic steroids for at least one year. "This bill attempts to send a message to Major League Baseball and to all other professional sports leagues that if they want to continue to ignore the problem that they have with steroids, that we're not going to continue to underwrite their activities with tax dollars," Roorda said. Quite a night at the ballpark for President Bush: Snubs Lo Duca, calls for
2008-03-31 22:53:00 President George Bush , once the owner of the steroid-riddled Texas Rangers, snubbed Nationals catcher Paul Lo Duca last night when he threw out the first ball at the Nats new stadium. Perhaps Bush became concerned that Lo Duca -- apparently a lifelong juicer -- would chuck that ball back at his head, or throw a Clemens-esque bat his way. The VIllage Voice says thus: Oh, they're so happy over on ESPN because of the Washington Nationals' new baseball stadium, which opened last night when George W. Bush threw up the first pitch. The doofus POTUS was wild with his throw to Nats' manager Manny Acta. Strange, isn't it, that Bush's battery mate was Acta instead of the Nats' catcher, Paul Lo Duca. But the ex-Met is ensnared in the steroids scandal, so his PR quotient is below the Mendoza Line. When asked by the ESPN team about the steroid scandals, Bush fumbled his way through the issue, and responded to the Mitchell Report (which we bet he didn't read) in an oblique way:F... Guillen and Gibbons given repreives from guilt
2008-03-30 14:24:00 Newsday reports that MLB players Jay Gibbons and Jose Guillen, both linked to HGH and PEDs will not begin 15 suspensions as previously planned. So much for Bug Selig saying what he means and meaning what he says. Major League Baseball put the suspensions of the Orioles' Jay Gibbons and the Royals' Jose Guillen on hold for 10 days, giving lawyers more time to reach an agreement toughening baseball's drug rules. The outfielders were suspended for 15 days each by commissioner Bud Selig on Dec. 6 after media reports linking them to performance-enhancing drugs. The penalties were to start Sunday. "Pretty surprising," Gibbons said. "Put it this way: I'm cautiously optimistic. At least they're talking." Negotiators are close to an agreement that would call for more frequent testing and would strengthen the authority of the independent program administrator. If there is an agreement, the suspensions most likely will be eliminated as part of an overall amn... More About: Guilt
Valentino Fois, Pantani cycling teammate dead at 34
2008-03-29 14:16:00 From Velo News comes this story about a teammate of deceased cycling champion Marco Pantini. Italian rider Valentino Fois, a former teammate of deceased champion Marco Pantani, has been found dead at his home near Bergamo, La Gazzetta dello Sport reported on Friday. The 34-year-old Fois, who turned professional in 1996, was arrested in 1998 for doping after testing positive twice during the Tour of Switzerland and the Tour of Poland. He was suspended for three years in 2002 while he rode for the Mercato Uno team of Pantani, who died of a drug overdose four years ago. The cause of Fois' death is unknown. He was found by his mother with whom he lived. Fois made his return to professional cycling last November by signing for the Amore e Vita team. Two months earlier he had been sentenced to 100 days in prison for stealing two portable computers from a local newspaper. The sentence was later reduced to a 4000-euro fine.
