A view of the news
2007-08-09 13:05:00
Here are my thoughts on a few items making news this morning.• NEWS ITEM: Chipper says A-Rod will face steroid questions. WTF? First, Jose Canseco throws Alex Rodriguez under the bus in an effort to sell books. Now, Atlanta's Chipper Jones paints him with the broad brush of the Steroid Era."There's going to be the questions because his name's been brought up. If I had to pose a guess on A-Rod, I would say no. But I don't know. He's going to have to answer the questions. And that goes for everybody that approaches the number. It's just so farfetched, the numbers that those guys are putting up. And a lot of it comes from the era that they're playing in."His name's been brought up? Yeah, by Canseco, who was credible on this topic at one time but has become a desperate, attention-seeking moron who will say or do anything to keep his name in the headlines and make a few bucks.A-Rod deserves a lot of the criticism that gets sent his way. He doesn't deserve this, however.• NEW...

Barry is king, and we really don't care
2007-08-08 12:29:00
So, it finally happened. Barry Bonds hit No. 756 last night to become baseball's all-time home run king. My reaction? Ho-hum. Big deal, at least now we can move on and talk about something else.Sure, Bonds deserves to be congratulated. Regardless of what you think of how he achieved the record, or what kind of person he is, he now owns the most hallowed record in all of sports. That can't be taken lightly or ignored. The sad truth is, though, that few people other than fans of the San Francisco Giants enjoyed Bonds' chase of Hank Aaron.Bonds pursuit of history is one that should have thrilled and captivated sports fans everywhere, and probably would have if Bonds wasn't such a controversial and unpopular figure.ESPN's Tim Kurkjian explored this topic in a recent column. He puts it this way.If Bonds were completely clean, commissioner Bud Selig would have followed his every move enthusiastically instead of keeping him somewhat at arm's length. If Bonds were clean, people wouldn...

New era begins in the Bronx
2007-08-07 16:51:00
The Joba Chamberlain Era begins in the Bronx today. The New York Yankees are calling up the fireballing phenom to join their beleaguered bullpen. The Yankees are hoping Chamberlain, who features a 97-99 mph fastball, can do for them what Francisco Rodriguez did for the Aneheim Angels in 2002. If you don't recall, K-Rod joined the Angels late in the season, made just a handful of appearances and then was absolutely dominant in the postseason as the Angels won the World Series. The other comparison is Joel Zumaya, the flamethrowing young righty reliever who helped the Detroit Tigers get to the World Series last season.Chamberlain, 21, was only recently moved to the bullpen with an eye on getting him to New York quickly. Along with starter Phil Hughes, he gives the Yankees the most exciting pair of young home-grown pitchers they have had in a long time.Steve Serby of the New York Post sat down with Chamberlain for a Q&A Sunday. Read it here. The move to Chamberlain and Hughes marks a...

Athletes who should be blogging
2007-08-06 15:45:00
Slowly, pro athletes are turning to blogging as a way to communicate with their fans. There is, of course, the mouth that never stops moving, Curt Schilling. In addition, there is the NBA's top draft pick Greg Oden, Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb and the most entertaining of them all, the Washington Wizards Gilbert Arenas.Which athletes would you like to see join the blogosphere. Here are 10 possibilities.• Jeremy Shockey. It seems like the New York Giants tight end always has something to say, and he's always trying to explain one comment or another. Blogging would be perfect for him. Of course, Tom Coughlin might not be too happy about it.• Shaquille O'Neal. He's a pretty funny guy, and a Shaq Blog would likely be pretty entertaining. He can tell us about police work, about his reality show, maybe about Kobe. As long as he doesn't give free-throw shooting advice.• Barry Bonds. People would read it, but I'm not sure he would share much that was true, anyway.• Ron Ar...

Kudos & Wet Willies, home run edition
2007-08-05 15:18:00
Today seems like the perfect time for a 'Kudos & Wet Willies' post. So, let's have at it.Kudos to ...• Barry Bonds. He finally tied Hank Aaron for the all-time home run lead with his 755th last night off San Diego's Clay Hensley. Yes, I have mixed feelings. Yes, I have suspicions. But, for today, I'll tip my cap to Bonds. The home run record is the most cherished one in sports, and his name is now attached to it.• Alex Rodriguez. Saturday, just 8 days after his 32nd birthday, A-Rod became the youngest player to reach 500 home runs, blasting a three-run shot against Kyle Davies. Many will now say it's just a matter of time before Rodriguez surpasses Bonds. When it comes to that, ESPN's Jayson Stark says hold on a minute. Whether he gets to that lofty number or not, A-Rod deserves congratulations for what he has already done.• Shelley Duncan. The excitable, hard-hitting, hard-home run celebrating Yankee rookie hit 5 home runs in his first 22 at-bats, becoming the first ...

Brendan Harris update
2007-08-04 13:05:00
What are you doing to our boy, Joe Maddon?A week ago, we adopted Tampa Bay shortstop Brendan Harris , a Queensbury, New York native, as our favorite non-Yankee. The View loves the way Harris plays, and he was born in Albany near where I live. So, The View has adopted him.It was an interesting week for Harris. With Ben Zobrist, whom Harris outplayed earlier in the season to win the shortstop job, recalled from AAA, he has been playing mostly second base. The View isn't happy about the Devil Rays messing with Harris, but at least he's still in the lineup. And I guess the fact that Zobrist is playing should also make me happy, since he played for the local minor league team, the Class A Tri-City ValleyCats, a couple of years back.Harris is currently hitting .301 with 8 home runs and 43 RBI. As long as Maddon keeps him in the lineup, The View will be happy.Around the Blogosphere• Neifi Perez is not very smart. Sportable• Getting some things off his chest. Epic Carnival• When exact...

Torre, young pitchers don't mix
2007-08-03 04:53:00
The father of 21-year-old New York Yankees' pitching phenom Joba Chamberlain wondered out loud the other day if being brought up to help New York's beleaguered bullpen -- and thus being put within reach of Manager Joe Torre's clutches -- would risk the health of his son's arm."Yeah, it's exciting, but I guess my concerns at this time are more for the safety of his arm and what this does to his arm," Harlan Chamberlain told Newsday. "So I kind of feel like the jury's out for me right now. His personal welfare from a parent's perspective overshadows the baseball perspective."Personally, I can't blame Harlan for being concerned. I love Torre and have defended him again and again during the past few seasons when many have been calling for his ouster.Yet, when you look at this Yankees team, and the direction you see General Manager Brian Cashman trying to take the entire organization, you have to think Torre is not the right guy to lead them beyond this season.I am glad the Yank...

'Betrayed' Strahan has it backwards
2007-08-02 13:43:00
So, Michael Strahan feels "betrayed" by the Giants. I think Strahan has this backwards. To me, the holdout defensive end is the one betraying his team. By waiting until the eve of training camp to announce that he is contemplating retirement and then not going to camp it is Strahan who has wronged the Giants, not the other way around. One of the biggest decisions the Giants made this off-season was to move Mathias Kiwanuka, the heir apparent to Strahan at defensive end, to linebacker. That, most likely, is a decision that never would have been made if the team knew Strahan would not be there. Then, of course, there is the distraction factor. The last thing beleaguered head coach Tom Coughlin and the Giants needed was another season filled with off the field issues. Strahan has, of course, caused them a huge one right out of the gate. The same source who told the Daily News that Strahan felt betrayed also said Strahan's decision not to come to camp "is not about money." Bunk! ...

Time for Igawa to go
2007-07-27 16:59:00
It should be obvious by now that if the New York Yankees are going to catch either Cleveland in the wild-card race or Boston in the AL East they simply cannot keep sending Kei Igawa to the mound every 5 days.Igawa, in whom the Yankees invested $46 million, was overmatched again last night, giving up 5 runs in 5.2 innings last night during a 7-0 loss. Igawa is 2-3 with a 6.79 ERA.The Japanese lefthander's inability to pitch at this level, and Phil Hughes continued rehab from a pair of leg injuries, has led to the obvious assumption that Hughes will soon take Igawa's spot in the rotation. That may be so, and I'll be glad if and when it happens. But, let's add a note of caution to the expectations surrounding Hughes. The 21-year-old righty has all of 10.2 big-league innings and one victory -- albeit an incredibly impressive one -- to his credit. He will be an improvement over Igawa, but I hardly expect him to be dominant during the last two months of the season. Throughout his minor-...

Brendan Harris: Officially The View's favorite non-Yankee
2007-07-27 12:59:00
The View hails from upstate New York, and is an unabashed Yankee fan.We also, however, have a soft spot for local players who make it big. There aren't too many big-league players from this neck of the woods, mostly because the weather just isn't warm enough to play baseball year-round as it is in many other areas of the country and in the Dominican Republic. For me, the local boy making good is Tampa Bay Devil Rays shortstop Brendan Harris . After bouncing around for several season, Harris has earned the everyday shortstop job in Tampa Bay and is having an outstanding season.More importantly, though, he's from Albany, which is a 10-minute drive across the river from me.So, The View is officially naming Harris our "Favorite non-Yankee Major League Baseball Player."That means you'll get occasional updates on Harris, lots of probably unprofessional rooting for our (my) newly-adopted local hero, tidbits about him and his background, and more. If I'm very, very lucky and I get help f...

Screw Giambi, and more baseball stuff
2007-07-26 17:21:00
So, Jason Giambi is all "fired up," and he's ready to start a rehab assignment in hopes of rejoining the New York Yankees within the next couple of weeks.Well, screw you, Giambi! This is one Yankee fan who had hoped -- and still hopes -- to never see your lumbering, broken-down, steroid-injected ass in a Yankee uniform again! The Yankees are doing just fine without you, Giambi. Andy Phillips is playing exceptionally well at first base and they have a nice outfield/designated hitter rotation working right now. Most importantly, though, they have eliminated many of the distractions, are winning games and are rapidly closing the gap in the hunt for a playoff spot.I know you can still hit home runs, Giambi, but you don't hit them as often as you once did and can't do much else. You can't play the field, and can only advance two bases on a ground-rule double or a home run. What you've been best at since signing with the Yankees is taking George Steinbrenner's money, and you've got ...

Time to get ready for some football
2007-07-26 12:52:00
Thank God!NFL training camps open during the next two or three days, and that's not a moment too soon. The current sports landscape is filled with misery. The Tim Donaghy NBA referee gambling scandal; Michael Vick's dogfighting indictment; Barry Bonds pursuit of the home run record no one outside San Francisco wants him to have, and all the controversy that swirls around him; chaos at the Tour de France, where a widening doping scandal took second billing Wednesday to race leader Michael Rasmussen being kicked out of the race by his own team for lying to them; a minor-league baseball coach killed when struck by a line drive.Sports fans need some good news, and the opening of NFL training camps is certainly that. Dark days for NBA's Stern
2007-07-25 16:10:00
Being commissioner of a major sports league is generally a pretty good gig. You get great seats to events whenever you want, rich people have to listen to you and you become a household name. These days, however, it sucks to be the big boss in any of our biggest sports. In the NFL, Roger Goodell has to deal with the Michael Vick dogfighting indictment. That, of course, is the biggest test of his new conduct policy that has seen Pacman Jones, Chris Henry and Tank Johnson be suspended. In Major League Baseball, Bud Selig has Barry Bonds and the ongoing steroids investigation to deal with. With Bonds just two home runs from tying Hank Aaron's all-time record, and more steroid accusations being hurled at him, Selig is grudgingly attending games while trying to distance himself from the surly slugger's pursuit of the record few really want him to have.Neither of those guys, however, face as big a problem as NBA Commissioner David Stern . The allegations that referee Tim Donaghy bet on NBA ...

Duncan stirs memories of Spencer, Maas
2007-07-24 13:30:00
In just 5 games and 17 at-bats, rookie slugger Shelley Duncan has bashed his way into the hearts of New York Yankees fans.Duncan has three home runs, seven RBI and most impressively already has two curtain calls from Yankee Stadium crowds.Duncan, who spent six seasons in the minors before getting his chance, is drawing comparisons to Shane Spencer . In case you don't remember, Spencer was called up by the Yankees in September of 1998 after a long minor-league career and smashed 11 home runs in just 81 at-bats.Going back a little further in Yankee history, Duncan's start is also reminiscent of the one enjoyed by Kevin Maas. In 1990, Maas hit 21 homers in just 79 games and looked like he might become the next great Yankee slugger. The problem for both Spencer and Maas is that neither of them could maintain their initial success. Both players bounced around for a few seasons after their impressive starts, but neither enjoyed the types of careers their quick starts indicated they might...

THE VIEW: Yardbarker was, I believe, the first site of its kind geared just for sports bloggers. What was your model? Were you trying to make a site like 'Digg' for sports bloggers? D-Rays: Worst Franchise of All Time
2007-07-23 13:01:00
After the New York Yankees last two victories over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays -- which came via a combined score of 38-9, I think there is one conclusion we can all agree on.The Devil Rays suck! I mean, they really, really suck! They might even be the worst franchise in the history of modern major sports leagues! Now, by no means have a done an exhaustive study of teams that would be as comparably awful as the Devil Rays. Truth is, though, I can't think of any franchise that comes close to matching the futility Tampa Bay seems to have perfected. The D-Rays are a major-league worst 38-60 (a .388 winning percentage) this season, but their futility goes way, way beyond that.Since they came into existence in 1998, the D-Rays have not come close to a winning season. In fact, the most games they have ever won is 70, which they accomplished in 2004. That also marked the only season in its history that Tampa Bay did not finish in last place. How on earth can one franchise be this awful for th...

Looking at trade rumors
2007-07-20 15:59:00
There are now less than two weeks to the Major League Baseball non-waiver trade deadline of July 31, and there are, of course, spades of new rumors each day about who is moving where. Most of those rumors will likely vaporize by the deadline. If this season follows many others, even teams who should be wheeling and dealing will likely be paralyzed by an inability to decide what they really want (witness the Washington Nationals idiotic failure to trade Alfonso Soriano last July).Let's take a look at what might, or might not happen in the next 11 days. Since The View is unabashedly Yankees first and everything else second, we will look at four possible deals involving the Bronx Bombers. Then, we will look at a few other players reportedly on the market.Yankee Rumors • Mark Teixeira to the Bronx. According to MLB.com, talks about Teixeira are intensifying. The Yankees are coming!
2007-07-19 13:33:00
What has thus far been a dreary, disappointing season could end up turning into the most fun New York Yankees fans have had in a long time.Maybe even since 1978.The surging Yankees have won 11 of 14 and are now firmly in position to torture Red Sox Nation for the rest of the summer. They are 7 games back in the AL East, 6 in the loss column, and have sliced 5 games off the lead in the last week.Red Sox fans are nothing if not paranoid. Even with their 2004 World Series title to comfort them, they still expect the worst, and still loathe the Yankees. Doom and gloom is their specialty, and now you can begin to smell the sweat building up all over Massachusetts way up here in upstate New York. The Yankees are coming! The Yankees are coming! The Yankees are coming! For Red Sox Nation, it's the nightmare scenario they hoped they would not have to deal with this season. Can the Yankees keep up the pressure? Yankee fans have reason to hope
2007-07-18 13:09:00
It took more than half the season, but it seems that the New York Yankees have finally righted the ship.Despite Kyle Farnsworth's latest implosion, the Yankees rallied for an extra-inning victory last night against Toronto. They have now won 5 of 6 since the All-Star break and 10 of 13.This latest surge has to give Yankee fans hope that this season may not be a lost cause after all. Yet, a look at the standings reveals that they still have a huge mountain to climb. With 71 games to play, the Yankees still trail Boston by 8 games in the AL East. As for the wild card, they are 7 games behind the Indians. So, Yankee fans, don't count on any great comeback yet. This recent streak might be enough to give you hope, but one 10-game stretch of 3-7 or so the rest of the way will be enough to turn this into the first Yankee-less October since the 1994 strike. ---NOTE: I need to thank to the folks at Sportable for the t-shirt they sent me. Yanks' Phillips a feel-good story
2007-07-17 12:42:00
Whether you are a New York Yankees fan or not, Andy Phillips is a guy you can root for.Phillips, 30, is getting his first real chance at playing every day in the major leagues and is making the most of it. He has been a hero for the Yankees the last two days, making a game-saving defensive play Sunday and singling in the game-winning runs Monday.Phillips is hitting .304 with a home run and 9 RBI since taking over as the Yankees' first baseman about three weeks ago.Phillips' production on the field is reason enough for Yankee fans to like him. That, however is only part of Phillips' story.Drafted by the Yankees in the 7th round in 1999, Phillips has been up and down with the Yankees since 2004. He played in 110 games last season, but mostly as a defensive replacement and never got an opportunity to show what he could do with regular at-bats.Last season, Phillips played while his wife, Bethany, struggled with a serious illness from which she has since recovered. This spring, Phillip...

I don't know how you can stand it, either, and I wish you would stop torturing us.The Yankees beat the Tampa Bay Devil Rays Saturday and Sunday, surviving Farnsworth's best efforts to torch much-needed Yankee victories on both days.Joe, we know you believe in bullpen by formula, meaning certain relievers are responsible for certain innings. In your world, Farnsworth's job is to pitch the eighth inning and set up for Mariano Rivera.Saturday, Farnsworth trudged in to 'protect' a two-run lead after the Yankees had fought back from a 3-0 deficit. Now that Rickey Henderson has joined the New York Mets coaching staff, the New York Yankees need to respond. There's only one thing they can do to compete with the hiring of the flamboyant, fast-talking Henderson -- hire Mickey Rivers.Mick the Quick , the former Yankee center fielder, is the only guy I can think of who talks faster and says more non-sensical things than Rickey. Here's a couple of examples."He's so ugly.
