Rickey's really gonna coach?
2007-07-13 12:50:00
Rickey Henderson has been added to the New York Mets coaching staff. Rickey Henderson? A coach? That's something I never thought I'd see. Next thing you know, Don Mattingly will be managing the Yankees! The Mets have not yet decided whether Henderson or Howard Johnson will fill the role as hitting coach, since Rick Down has been fired. What would Henderson do as hitting coach? Try to lift the Mets out of their hitting malaise by talking to their bats? Have everybody crouch real low so they don't have a strike zone and can draw a boatload of walks?I can't get used to the idea that the flamboyant Henderson, baseball's all-time stolen base leader, has morphed into a stodgy old coach.Who knows, maybe this is all just a ruse. Henderson, after all, said his spring he still thinks he can play despite being out of the big leagues since 2003. He's still just 46, and the Mets did just release the ancient wonder, 48-year-old Julio Franco.Maybe, just maybe, if Lastings Milledge flops in his ...

Eli: I'm ready to lead
2007-07-12 21:47:00
Has Eli Manning grown up and developed a little backbone? Some comments attributed to him indicate that maybe the New York Giants quarterback has done just that. Manning told the Daily News Wednesday that he is ready to accept the mantel of leadership."You want to be a leader, even when things are going good or going bad. I want to be the guy to step up, make plays and lead the team. ... "As far as leadership it's something you earn, the respect of your teammates. You play well, prepare for every game and when things get tough ... you step up."-- Read more at Big Blue View

Party time at The View
2007-07-12 12:47:00
It's a day to celebrate here at The View ! It was year ago today that I began in earnest trying to build 'Valentine's Views' into a site worthy of becoming a regular stop for sports blog readers.I don't know if I've been entirely successful -- there's still too many days with too few readers. But I'm enjoying the hell out of it, and lots of great things have happened during the past year.'Valentine's Views' has earned a handful of links from Deadspin, the biggest sports blog of them all and the Holy Grail for sports bloggers struggling to gain attention for their work. That well has run dry lately, but I'm still trying (hey, Will, throw me a bone already -- I'm dying out here!).Some of my work here gained enough attention that it landed me a second gig, writing a New York Giants football blog called 'Big Blue View' for Sports Blogs Nation. If you like the Giants, or just football in general, check it out.More than 27,000 unique visitors stopped by The View during its f...

No ripping ESPN allowed today
2007-07-11 16:24:00
I was thinking about joining the growing chorus of bloggers who have been ripping ESPN lately (the World Wide Leader deserves it), but I can't do it today. No way I can feel good about hating on ESPN on the day ESPN Radio is running the day-long V Foundation Auction, which is maybe the most worthwhile thing ESPN does all year. The V Foundation for Cancer Research, in the unlikely event you're not familiar, is named in honor of the late North Carolina State basketball coach Jim Valvano.Go to ESPNRadio.com or tune into any of the ESPN Radio shows today to find out how to contribute. So, instead of ripping ESPN today help them out by getting over there and contributing a few bucks to the V Foundation if you can. Now, let's take a look around the blogosphere and see what other folks are writing about. That's something we don't do often enough here at The View. So, let's go.Around the Blogosphere• Lavin uninvites wedding guests. With Leather• This will make you proud to be an Ameri...

MMA is not for me
2007-07-10 21:24:00
My 17-year-old son loves to watch Mixed Martial Arts. Me? Maybe it's a generational thing, maybe I'm too old and conservative, or maybe I'm just a damn sissy -- but I can't get into it.In case you don't know what Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is, it's a brutal, fast-growing extreme sport in which combatants are allowed to use a variety of fighting techniques in an effort to bludgeon their opponent into submission.Wikipedia defines MMA this way.A combat sport in which a wide variety of fighting techniques are used, including striking and grappling. ... The techniques utilized in mixed martial arts competition generally fall into two categories: striking techniques (such as kicks, knees and punches) and grappling techniques (such as clinch holds, pinning holds, submission holds, sweeps, takedowns and throws). Some unarmed hand to hand combat techniques are considered illegal in most or all modern competition, such as biting, eye-gouging, fish-hooking and small joint manipulation.Ove...
Who is king of sports talk radio?
2007-07-10 12:55:00
Personal preferences aside, you can make an argument that Dan Patrick has been king of sports talk radio since the Dan Patrick Show debuted on ESPN Radio in 1999.With Patrick's announcement Monday that he will leave ESPN next month after 18 years with the network who would you say will now wear that crown? My personal talk show favorite is Tony Kornheiser, but he only does his show part of the year now and has a limited audience since he broadcasts out of WTWP in Washington, D.C. Thus, he can't really be considered.Would you say Mike Greenberg and Mike Golic, who host ESPN Radio's 'Mike & Mike in the Morning' show would be the kings? With Patrick going off the air, the duo provides -- for me -- the only must-listen to sports talk radio. Their metrosexual (Greenberg) vs. fat slob ex-jock (Golic) schtick grates on some and is rather predictable, but they make me laugh, have great guests and provide some interesting discussions.Colin Cowherd? Please! Merely putting him in this conv...

Donovan should stay put
2007-03-28 12:51:00
The college coaching carousel is in full swing. As usual at this time of year, coaches are getting hired and fired at a dizzying pace. One coach who shouldn't go anywhere, though everyone seems to want him to go somewhere, is Florida's Billy Dono van .Followers of the NBA's Miami Heat think Donovan would be a great choice to succeed Pat Riley as head coach of the Heat. While on ESPN Radio yesterday morning, Rick Majerus even more or less campaigned for Donovan to get that job.By the way, look at the pictures of Riley and Donovan. Am I nuts, or could they be father and son? Both have the slick look, snazzy clothes and ferocious intensity. Slick Sr. and Slick Jr. No wonder some folks around the NBA think Billy D. is the perfect choice to succeed Riley. Then, of course, there are those persistent rumors that Billy D. will be packing up and heading to bluegrass country once the Final Four is done to replace the departed (or, run out of town on a rail) Tubby Smith at the University of K...

What we've learned this spring
2007-03-27 13:03:00
Spring Training is winding down and the regular season will start in just a few days. What have we learned throughout the exhibition season? Quite a few things, actually. We've learned that the Alex Rodriguez soap opera will continue throughout the season, and that he sounds like a man likely to use the opt-out clause in his contract to walk away from the New York Yankees at the end of the season. We've learned that Curt Schilling not only has diarrhea of the mouth, he also has diarrhea of the fingertips. Schilling is blogging now, and on a daily basis seems to be writing the Internet equivalent of 'War and Peace.'We've learned that, while the Yankees have stockpiled young pitching, they are very thin on proven starters. Roger Clemens can hear the cash register ringing loud and clear. We've learned that Daisuke Matsuzaka of the Red Sox could be pretty darn good. For that matter, Kei Igawa of the Yankees looks like he might also be better than many thought he would be.We've learne...

Sticking with the Hoyas
2007-03-26 13:29:00
Now that we know who is going to the NCAA Basketball Tournament Final Four, how does your bracket look?Is it a shambles? Did you chuck in the trash a week ago? Or, are you sittin' pretty in your office pool?I'm not bragging, but I do have all four of the finalists. Picking all the top powerhouses can sometimes kill you, but this has been a year for the chalk. The New York Times calls it 'a March without the Madness,' and says 161,869 entrants in ESPN's bracket pool correctly selected all the Final Four teams. Last year, only four entrants did that.Pretty amazing. What have your impressions of the tournament been so far, and after watching the games this weekend who do you think will end up winning it all?I picked Georgetown to win it all, and I am going to stick with that choice. The Hoyas completely overwhelmed North Carolina in the second half and overtime Sunday. They were too determined, too physical and too athletic for the Tar Heels.Every rebound seemed to go to the Hoyas,...

For opener, Pavano might get call
2007-03-25 12:53:00
Memo to New York Yankees fans. Before you read this, put on an extra pot of coffee and check the medicine cabinet to make sure you can find the aspirin -- you are going to need both.Your likely Open ing Day starter is ... Carl Pavano. No, that's not a misprint. It's not official, but Pavano appears to be just about the only choice the Yankees have for an Opening Day starter. That's because Yankee ace Chien Ming-Wang (doesn't that sound strange? Yankee ace Chien Ming-Wang) was placed on the disabled list Saturday with a hamstring pull. Andy Pettitte has a back injury and won't be ready for the opener. Mike Mussina would be thrown off schedule, which is always a bad thing with Mussina, who does not work well when he is out of his routine. And there is no way Joe Torre hands the ball to Kei Igawa or Jeff Karstens to open the season. The Rajah of Rehab himself suddenly appears to be about the best candidate for the job. Maybe Pavano has transferred all that bad karma he has been surro...

Is Kobe in Jordan's air space?
2007-03-24 18:02:00
Is Kobe Bryant better than Michael Jordan ?It seems almost sacrilegious to ask the question since Jordan is considered the best NBA player of all time, but Kobe's recent string of four straight 50-point games -- something Jordan never did -- forces the debate.I won't anoint Bryant, and neither will Laker coach Phil Jackson -- who, in case you forgot -- was Jordan's coach through all the Bulls championship seasons. Yet, it's hard not to be awed by what Bryant is doing."His shooting has been remarkable, just raising up over people and knocking it down,'' Jackson told SI.com. "It's hard to compare 10-years-ago Michael to present-day Kobe at this point. It's phenomenal, it's incredible; it's shooting more than Michael was. Michael was probably more post-up, more penetration, more at-the-basket kind of stuff. But Kobe's doing a whole range of things.''What is fueling Bryant? We know he has a huge ego, we know he wants to be the man, we know he hates to be criticized and we kn...

Draft grows in importance after Wilson fiasco
2007-03-24 16:27:00
Friday turned into an awful day for the Giants.<p> First, it seemed a trade was in place for Pro Bowl linebacker Al Wilson, but that fell apart when Wilson reportedly failed his physical. According to published reports, the Giants were concerned about Wilson's neck, which he injured late last season.<p> On top of that, indications are that the Houston Texans will match the Giants $8 million offer to fullback Vonta Leach.<p> So, where does this leave the Giants? It has so far been an unproductive off-season in terms of adding talent, and there isn't much left in the free-agent market.<p> Wilson would have been an outstanding addition. He has been voted to the Pro Bowl five times in eight years as a middle linebacker with Denver. The Giants, who have Antonio Pierce in the middle, were apparently going to move Wilson outside.<p> That would have given the Giants two quality playmakers at linebacker and enabled them to focus on other needs.<p> ...

I hear the Ohio State-Tennessee finish was great
2007-03-23 16:51:00
So, Ohio State pulled off another miracle last night, coming back from a 20-point first-half deficit to defeat Tennessee , 85-84, and reach the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight.Too bad I didn't see any of the second half, though I would have loved to. One of the best games of the tournament so far, and CBS was showing the UCLA-Pitt game. I thought about heading to my computer and watching via March Madness of Demand, which is a great thing, but the game ended well after midnight and I just couldn't make it that late. I can't imagine I was the only one.I don't know what the answer is, but these late games that start around 9:40 p.m. are just ridiculous. Maybe those games need to start at 9:00. I don't care if there is an overlap between the end of the early games and the beginning of the late games.I want to be able to see the finish of the games. And putting the games in time slots that mean they will end well after midnight is doing a disservice to anyone on the East Coast.Other stu...

Papelbon to close for Red Sox
2007-03-22 19:32:00
Now this is not good news for the New York Yankees and the rest of the American League.According to ESPN, the Red Sox have abandoned their plan to make Jonathan Papelbon a starter and will return him to the closer's role. Papelbon saved 35 games and pitched to an ERA of 0.92 as the Boston closer last season before being shut down with a shoulder injury. That injury is why the Red Sox were going to make Papelbon a starter this year. But, apparently, the Red Sox decided they couldn't stomach the thought of Joel Piniero, Brendan Donnelly, Julian Tavarez or Mike Timlin trying to pitch the 9th inning.Papelbon's presence in the Boston bullpen negates the Mariano Rivera factor, the one clear advantage the Yankees had going into the season. With him backing the Boston rotation of Curt Schilling, Daisuke Matsuzaka, Josh Beckett, Tim Wakefield and probably Jon Lester I think you have to make the Red sox the favorite in the AL East.technorati tags: Jonathan Papelbon, Boston Red Sox, Curt Schi...

World Series title not the only way to measure success
2007-03-22 12:52:00
Tom Verducci of Sports Illustrated took George Steinbrenner and the New York Yankees to task the other day for their 'win the World Series or bust' philosophy of the past few seasons. Now, I am a diehard Yankee fan and it ticks me off that I haven't added anything to my collection of Yankee World Series championship hats, t-shirts and sweatshirts since 2000. Some of that stuff is starting to look pretty ragged.Yankee fans probably don't want to hear it, but I agree with Verducci. You set yourself up for lots of misery when you consider anything other than winning the World Series a failure. Every loss is over-analyzed and the pressure mounts after every season in which you fall short. The Yankees spoiled us by winning four world championships from 1996-2000, and by getting to the Series six times in an eight-year span from 1996-2003. It is just not realistic in this era, with revenue sharing, the wild card turning the playoffs into a complete crapshoot and free agency making it ea...

Linebacker visits; Giants waiting on Leach
2007-03-21 16:05:00
According to the <a href="http://www.nj.com/giants/ledge r/index.ssf?/base/sports-0/11744552298498 0.xml&amp;coll=1">Star-Ledger </a> unrestricted free agent linebacker Keith Adams visited the Giant s Tuesday.<p> Adams is undersized (5-foot-11, 223 pounds) and is mostly known for being an excellent special teams player.<p> He did, however, have the best season of his career while playing for the Eagles in 2005 when he registered 101 tackles. The Eagles linebackers coach that year? New Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo.<p> On another note, the Giants are still waiting to see if the Texans will match their offer to restricted free agent fullback Vonta Leach.<p> Leach's agent, Ralph Vitolo, told the New York Post is appears "50-50" as to what the Texans will do.

I hate to admit it, but Schilling's blog is good
2007-03-21 16:03:00
Curt Schilling launched his own blog a couple of weeks ago, and I was among those who panned him for finding yet another way to shove his opinions down our throats.Schilling's blog, though, is wildly popular. And, I have to admit there is some entertaining stuff in it when he isn't talking about himself, his contract or his religious beliefs. The best thing he does is take and answer questions -- lots of them -- from readers. It's especially fun when Schilling discusses his thoughts on other players he admires. Here is a sample.Question: Starting 9 with a DH, and SP, from todays players? No payroll limit? Answer:C-Jason Varitek – As good a handler of pitching staffs as anyone I’ve ever been around, coach or player. Not to mention he brings value in the clubhouse as well. I have heard Joe Mauer is this same kind of presence, but he brings some pretty incredible offensive tools that no other catcher in the game possesses. I’ll stick with what I know though and that makes Tek an...

An idea for expanding the NCAA tourney field
2007-03-20 17:03:00
Big-name coaches like Louisville's Rick Pitino and Maryland's Gary Williams have been among those calling for expansion of the NCAA Basketball Tour nament field.Personally, I would hate to see that happen. I have my qualms with the way teams are selected, but the exclusivity of the tournament is one of the things that makes it great. I love the fact that a team like Syracuse can get left out of in the cold while teams like UAlbany or Winthrop can get in the field of 64.Over at AOL Fanhouse, they raise the argument that college basketball has the lowest percentage of teams qualifying for postseason play among the major sports. According to Fanhouse, the numbers are as follows:College Basketball: 19.3%. 65 out of 336 teams. MLB: 26.6%. 8 out of 30 teams make the playoffs. NFL: 12 out of 32 teams make the playoffs: 37.5% College Football: 62 teams play in bowl games, out of 119 total: 52.1% NBA: 16 out of 30 teams make the playoffs: 53.4%NHL: 16 out of 30 teams make the pla...

Early returns not great for Yankees
2007-03-20 12:10:00
Kei IgawaI praised Brian Cashman throughout the off-season for all the moves he made. I was, and still am, among those who liked the trades of Gary Sheffield, Randy Johnson and Jaret Wright -- each of which brought back young pitching talent.I didn't even mind the signing of Japanese lefty Kei Igawa. Reports on Igawa were mixed, but $26 million of the $46 million the Yankees spent on him went into the posting fee and didn't count against the luxury tax. In the winter's crazy pitching market, it seemed like a decent investment.I was all for shedding old, unhappy players and adding flexibility to both the roster and the payroll.Right now, however, things aren't looking quite as good for Cashman and the Yankees.Igawa pitches tonight, and he might need an impressive outing to avoid being sent to Scranton to start the season. Igawa has a 5.14 spring ERA and has walked seven hitters in seven innings. Youngster Jeff Karstens is making a strong bid to dislodge Igawa from the No. 5 slot ...

Vonta Leach signs offer sheet
2007-03-20 02:57:00
Houston Texans fullback Vonta Leach <a href="http://blog.nj.com/ledgergiant s/">has signed an offer sheet</a> to play for the Giants.<p> According to the NFL Network, it's a four-year offer worth $8 million. He's a restricted free agent, so now we will see if the Texans value him enough to match the offer.<p> This move seems a tad curious considering Leach has never carried the ball in his three-year career, and has caught only a handful of passes. Jim Finn has done a solid job at fullback for the Giants the past few seasons.<p> I don't know much about him, but Leach is a 250-pound former college linebacker with a reputation for being very physical.<p> It would seem the Giants would like to put a power fullback in front of the 265-pound Brandon Jacobs and the 220-pound Reuben Droughns.<p> I've reached out to our friends over at the Battle Red Blog that covers the Texans to see if I can get more info on Leach. Banking on the draft
2007-03-19 21:35:00
By now it should be pretty obvious that if the Giants are going to bring in any impact players, especially on defense, they will come from next month's draft.<p> Now that linebacker Cato June, the last real big name on the board, has signed with Tampa Bay there is really nobody left. The Giants, it seems, never seriously entertained looking at June.<p> You might see a veteran backup offensive lineman brought in, and possibly the Giants will make a run at placekicker Olindo Mare when the Dolphins get around to releasing him, but that's about it. There isn't much else out there.<p> Maybe some useful -- and less expensive players -- will become available in June when teams make more roster cuts. <p> It looks, however, like the Giants could be awfully thin in a few areas unless GM Jerry Reese hits a home run in the draft.<p> Your thoughts?<p> <b>NOTE:</b> I'm still looking for some mock draft help. Nash or Kobe -- who would you rather watch?
2007-03-19 14:56:00
Would you rather watch Kobe Bryant or Steve Nash?I'll take Nash.Whoa, you say. Hang on a second. Kobe just dropped 65 and 50 in his last two games, becoming the first Laker since Elgin Baylor in 1962 to score 50 or more in consecutive games. Since 2000, only Antwan Jamison and Allen Iverson have accomplished the feat. How can you not want to watch that?I didn't say I wouldn't want to watch Bryant. He is the most incredible, strong-willed scorer in the game today. When he decides to take over a game, there is no stopping him. He does what he wants with the ball, when he wants and it is awesome to watch. Just once in my life I would love to feel that unstoppable with the ball in my hands. What Bryant and other players like Iverson, Gilbert Arenas and Dwayne Wade do is take over games single-handedly. When it becomes obvious their teammates aren't going to help, these players win games by ignoring them. They do it themselves, and when it works it can be awesome to watch. Even Michael...

NCAA Tournament thoughts
2007-03-18 18:26:00
A few impressions from the first three days of the NCAA Basketball Tour nament.Ohio's State miraculous victory over Xavier Saturday is bad news for the rest of the field. The No. 1 ranked Buckeyes trailed by 11 late in the second half, forced overtime an an incredible three-pointer by Ron Lewis with two seconds left, then pulled away in the extra session even though star center Greg Oden fouled out near the end of regulation. It is the kind of harrowing escape that can propel a team to a national championship. Ohio State survived this huge scare, now let's see if anybody else can knock them off. ...Oden vs. Durant: Ohio State's Oden and Kevin Durant of Texas are acknowledged as college basketball's two best players. These tournament games are the first times I have watched either player closely, and it is easy to see why they are so highly thought of. If I had to guess, I think Durant might make a faster impact at the NBA level than Oden, although both will be superstars. Durant'...

I'll be honest, I am not really into mock drafts. I know, however, that many of you are.<p> We will be doing a mock draft here at Sports Blogs Nation encompassing choices made by each blogger covering a particular team. That will be getting started in a couple of weeks and I will provide more details when the time comes.<p> In the meantime, I thought maybe we could post our own mock right here at the BBV. I am gonna guess that some of you out there have already worked out your own mock drafts, and even if you haven't you might have more fun figuring out your first round than I will.<p> I will give you guys a couple of days to send me your own mock drafts, then I will use them to compile one I'll post here. Once it is posted, I can submit it to the <a href="http://www.hailredskins.com/Mo ckDraft .htm">Hail Redskins Mock Draft Database</a>, and we can start some discussion about what you think the Giants draft should look like.<p>...
