Giants don't owe Strahan anything
2007-02-28 14:57:01 So, Michael Stra han has requested a meeting with Giant s General Manager Jerry Reese to discuss his future with the team.
What I really think Strahan is trying to do is weasel a few more dollars out of the Giants to offset some of the more than $15 million he has to pay his ex-wife following their bitterly contested divorce settlement.
Strahan is 35, has missed significant time due to injuries the past couple of seasons and can't be serious if he thinks the Giants would extend his contract.
The Giants reportedly owe Strahan $8 million over the next two seasons.
Considering his age and injuries the Giants would be crazy to either extend his contract or give him more money.
If that means Strahan moves on to another team at some point just to cash a few more paychecks, so be it. Quinn taking the Leinart plunge
2007-02-28 02:56:01 Let's talk about Brady Quinn for a while.
I know this is a New York Giants blog, and I know Quinn won't be a Giant, but I have to say I can't figure out what is going on with the Notre Dame quarterback's draft stock.
Quinn is taking the Matt Leinart plunge it seems, dropping farther and farther down the boards every time you look at the latest projections.
I don't get it. Before LSU's JaMarcus Russell declared for the draft, Quinn was headed to Oakland as the consensus No. 1 pick. Now, he might fall as low as No. 9 to the Dolphins. Over at Phinsid er I know they are rooting for that scenario to play out.
The Detroit Lions have the second pick in the draft. Over at Pride of Detroit you will find a glowing review of the performance at the NFL Com... More About: King , Taking
McGahee a good fit for Giants?
2007-02-27 02:55:01 The Buffalo Bills have reportedly put running back Willis McGahee on the trade block, and Giant s GM Jerry Reese app ears to be interested.

"The re is some talk about Willis out there," Reese told reporters Saturday morning. "We'll investigate Willis. We'll investigate everybody out there with trade talks. We'll leave no stones unturned."

What do you guys think of this?
McGahee has rushed for more than 1,000 yards twice in three seasons, but he is not a breakaway back and has a career average of 3.9 yards per carry.
I'm not sold on this idea, or on the idea of going out and getting a Thomas Jones or Ahman Green. Brandon Jacobs will handle the bulk of the running no matter who the Giants bring in, and I am not sure any of these guys would be content to take a back seat.&... More About: Ants , Good
Giants waiting on O'Hara's decision
2007-02-27 02:55:01 The New York Daily News reported the other day that the Giant s have made a final, take-it-or-leave-it</a& gt; offer to center Shaun O'Hara.
If O'Hara leaves what is reportedly a 6-year, $21.6 million offer and becomes a free agent, that is bad news for the Big Blue.
O'Hara is not a Pro Bowl center, though he seems to want to be paid like one. He is, however, a solid player and I hope he stays with the Giants.
Having to replace him would mean that the Giants would have to rebuild three-fifths of what had been a pretty solid offensive line the past couple of seasons.
The Giants have already let starting left tackle Luke Petitgout leave, and the plan seems to be that David Diehl will move from left guard to replace him. That would mean Rich Seubert, would play guard. If O'Hara leaves, however, Seubert would play... More About: Decision , Ants , Sion , Waiting

Coughlin challenges Barber's claims
2007-02-24 02:54:01 Interesting that Tom Cough lin didn't duck the subject when he was asked at the NFL scouting combine this morning about Tiki Barber's statements that Coughlin's practice regimen hastened his retirement.

"It hurts, because I've held this player in high regard and he performed his best years of his career under us and I'm very proud of that," Coughlin said in the Journal News.
"I don't know what this is all about. To say I had something to do with his retirement, I don't quite follow it. I'm not speaking out of school when I say discussions about retirement started last spring."

Good for Coughlin. If Barber didn't want to play any more, that's fine. He should just admit he didn't want to put himself through the NFL grind any longer, instead of trying to make... Thomas or Clements -- which would you choose?
2007-02-24 02:54:01 The Baltimore Ravens ;will not franchise standout linebacker Adalius Thomas , meaning the two-time Pro Bowler can be an unrestricted free agent.
That should get the attention of Giants GM Jerry Reese since Thomas might be the biggest playmaking defender on the free agent market, and I'm sure it will get the attention of plenty of other teams as well.

"I would think A.D. would be at the top of most teams lists," said Thomas' agent, Bus Cook.

The Giants have plenty of cap space (roughly $20 million) and an obvious need for a playmaking linebacker -- especially since they recently released LaVar Arrington and Carlos Emmons.
So, making a run at Thomas, who had a career-high 11 sacks in 2006 to go along with 83 tack... Combine is classic over-analysis
2007-02-24 02:54:01 The NFL Scouting Comb ine opens today in Indianapolis.
For the next several days you'll read lots of stories about which players have the most to gain at the Combine, which have the most to lose, and who is moving up or down the draft boards.
In fact, here's a couple to get you started.
• Fox Sports Combine Preview
• SI.com Combine Preview

Personally, I'm not a big Combine guy. I think a lot of what goes on there has nothing to do with what kind of football players these guys are.
Guys are judged by all manner of physical characteristics, interviews, test scores and performances in drills.
To me, none of that proves anything. Continuing the Eli discussion
2007-02-24 02:54:01 I wasn't going to do this, but considering the reaction I've seen so far I'd like to spend another day debating Eli Manning.
As I write this, the poll question I posed yesterday regarding whether or not Eli would eever lead the Giants to a Super Bowl title, has produced an exact 50-50 split. Half the voters say yes, half say no. As usual, folks are divided on Eli.
I think that someday he will. As I've said, he will never be the equal of his brother, Peyton, but he will be an upper echelon quarterback in the NFL for a long time.
That doesn't mean, however, that I think Ernie Accorsi should have given up so much to trade for him. Especially not when Ben Roethlisberger and Philip Rivers were also available in that same draft.
It is those two players whom Manning's career should be judged against, not Peyton's. Right now, you would have to say Eli is No. 3 in the Eli-Ben-Philip comparison, but that story can't fully be ... More About: Sion , Discussion , Disc , Conti

Return of the Bronx Zoo
2007-02-18 16:05:00 Spring Training has barely begun, and already the New York Yankees are in midseason form when it comes to grabbing back-page headlines in the New York tabloids.Let's recap what we've read about already. Will A-Rod stay or won't he? Alex Rodriguez is always in the middle of something, and this year it started before camp even opened. A-Rod can opt out of his contract at the end of this season and leave the Yankees if he wishes, and he's already caused a firestorm by not denying he might do just that. This is a story that will stick around all season.Bye, bye Bernie? Will Bernie Williams come to camp or won't he seems to be a daily storyline. Bernie, and Yankee fans, seem insulted by the team's offer of an invitation to camp rather than a guaranteed roster spot. If he actually does show up, which seems unlikely, Joe Torre will have to answer questions about him all spring.'Mo' wants respect. Mariano Rivera, in the last year of his contract, caused more controversy in two days t... More About: Return , The Bronx , Bron , Turn , Return of the
A-Rod already at it again
More articles from this author:2007-02-08 13:40:00 Spring training hasn't even begun, and already the Alex Rodriguez circus is in full swing. The New York Yankees megastar has been all over the news in the last few days, releasing a children's book, getting in the middle of an incident at a book signing that ended with police intervening and now refusing to quell speculation that he will exercise his option after this season to back out of the last years of his Yankees contract and become a free agent. So, the storm has already started and A-Rod hasn't even stepped in the batting cage yet, left a runner on third in a key spot or picked up a grounder and chucked it into the stands. This guy is one of the most talented players you will ever see, and probably one of its most complex people. It's always something with Rodriguez, whether he is talking publicly about undergoing therapy, writing children's books, taking his shirt off in Central Park or disappearing in the clutch he is always at the center of something that doesn't help ...
