Super Bowl XLVI Predictions
2012-02-05 18:00:00
Here are our predictions for who will win Super Bowl XLVI on Sunday night between the New York Giants and New England Patriots. We will also give our picks for who we think wins the Super Bowl XLVI MVP. Ian: New England Patriots 34 New York Giants 23 Coming off of a great defensive effort against the Ravens in the AFC Championship, I think the Patriots defense will step up again in this one. MVP: TE Aaron Hernandez With Rob Gronkowski seemingly healthy, I think the Giants will be focused on him as well as Wes Welker leaving Hernandez open for Tom Brady to find and put up some great numbers. Steve: New England Patriots 30 New York Giants 28 The game will be a tight battle with teams pretty much answering each other when they score.  In the 4th quarter the Giants forge a small lead only to see it vaporize in the final seconds on Patriots field goal. MVP: WR Chad Ochocinco, New England You see that right.  Something tells me he could very well be a house on fire on Sunday and...

Red Sox Avoid Arbitration With Alfredo Aceves
2012-02-05 17:56:00
In order to avoid going to arbitration, Boston Red Sox GM Ben Cherington had to work out deals with Alfredo Aceves and David Ortiz. And with the hearings scheduled for both of them sometime within the next 12 days, he's running out of time to avoid the Red Sox going to arbitration for the first time since the 2002 season. Well now,at the very least, he only has to worry about going to arbitration with one of them. The Boston media is reporting that the Red Sox and Aceves have agreed on a one-year, $1.2 million contract. Alex Speier of WEEI.com states the contract also includes up to $100,000 in bonuses depending on how many games Aceves starts or how many appearances he makes. There's no word on whether the contract also includes towels to wipe the pouring sweat off of his head on the mound. Aceves had asked for $1.6 million while the Red Sox were offering $950,000 so the two sides almost met in the middle. We do know that Aceves is heading to spring training as a starter and wi...

UConn Women Cream Rutgers, 66-34
2012-02-05 04:20:00
The Rutgers Scarlet Knights were playing without one of their leaders in Khadijah Rushdan. The UConn Huskies women's basketball team hadn't played a game in a while where they dominated from start to finish. With Rutgers shorthanded, it didn't take UConn long to take control of the game as they went on to a very easy 66-34 win over 9,982 on Saturday at Gampel Pavilion in Storrs, CT. The crowd of 9,982 was the biggest at Gampel this season. It's the ninth straight win for the No. 3/3 Huskies who improve to 21-2 (9-1 Big East). With their third straight loss, No. 13/14 Rutgers falls to 17-6 (6-4). Playing just 20 minutes, Stefanie Dolson paced the Huskies with 16 points and had four rebounds.  Tiffany Hayes added 14 points, five rebounds and seven assists while Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis broke out of her shooting slump with 11 points and had five rebounds. Kiah Stokes continues to impress with her improved play as she came off the bench to score 10 points and pull down five board...

Connecticut Whale 4, Hershey Bears 1
2012-02-05 04:17:00
By Brian Ring Hershey , PA, February 4, 2012 - The Connecticut Whale defeated the Hershey Bears , 4-1, Saturday night at the Giant Center to win their second straight game. Tommy Grant scored twice for the Whale and goaltender Chad Johnson made 39 saves in the victory. The win, coupled with Bridgeport?s loss to Manchester, moved the Whale back into a share of first place in the Northeast Division with 51 points. ?Johnson had a good game in net, we got a power-play goal, we got some secondary scoring with Tommy Grant getting two, there were a lot of things in our favor tonight,? said Whale head coach Gernander. The two teams played exactly 16 minutes of scoreless hockey before Grant gave the Whale a 1-0 lead in the opening period. Grant carried the puck down the left wing boards, snapping a shot that squeaked under the left arm of Bears? goaltender Dany Sabourin (17 saves). Grant?s goal, his fourth of the season, was assisted by Scott Tanski and Jared Nightingale. Hershey, however, wou...

Patriots Release Underwood on Eve of Super Bowl
2012-02-05 02:32:00
The New England Patriots made a roster move on Saturday, just 24 hours before Super Bowl XLVI against the New York Giants. In what to some seems like a shocking move, the Patriots cut WR Tiquan Underwood and signed DE Alex Silvestro from the practice squad.  The move was not disciplinary in nature and was made to give New England depth on the defensive line as the game goes deeper. Look at the move this way, by cutting Underwood now, he was able to spend the entire week in Indianapolis with his teammates and family.  He got to be involved in all the team and league activities, he is in the team picture and should New England win on Sunday, he will surely be awarded a ring for his contributions this season. While to many it seems like a cold and heartless move by Bill Belichick, it really should be looked at as a reward by doing it now.  Belichick could have cut him a week ago and left him in Foxboro but he came along was part of the team.  Tomorrow will be no dif...

Curtis Martin Gets Call From Hall
2012-02-05 02:28:00
The Professional Football Hall of Fame made the call for Curtis Martin on Saturday making him the 29th modern-era running back to be elected to Canton, Martin, a 3rd round pick by the New England Patriots in 1995 out of the University of Pittsburgh, spent his first three seasons with the Patriots.  In 1995 he was the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year and following the 1996 season he played in his lone Super Bowl, a Patriots loss to Green Bay in Super Bowl XXXI. After playing for New England in 1997, he left as a free agent signing with the rival New York Jets, rejoining his former Patriots coach Bill Parcells in the Meadowlands.  He was a restricted free agent and signed a six-year, $36 million contract, which New England declined to match. In his first seven years in New York, he missed just one game allowing him to rush for 1,000 yards or more in each of his first 10 NFL seasons. Martin finished his career with 14,101 rushing yards, fourth all-time and 90 TD?s.  He w...

The Giants are Super Bowl Champions
2012-02-05 02:20:00
So said Giants.com earlier on Saturday afternoon as it publicized sales for the Super Bowl winning t-shirts, hats and other items. Intrepid Patriots fan, Jeff Frias, caught the site, made a screen grab and passed it on to the Boston media.  For good measure, I sent it to the Patriots. I?d bet my private parts that Bill Belichick has this item in his possession and will mention it this evening at the team meeting.  He is a master motivator and prior to Super Bowl XXXVI he used the Rams victory parade announcement and route to tweak his team. I leave you with this from Patriots TE Aaron Hernandez?s Twitter account. ?One more day until they let me out of my cage.? UConn Men Snap Skid With 69-46 Win Over Seton Hall
2012-02-04 20:43:00
The UConn Huskies men's basketball team came into Saturday afternoon's game having lost four straight games and were without their leader in head coach Jim Calhoun. The Seton Hall Pirates were partially in the same boat having lost five straight games and were without one of their best players in Herb Pope. So we knew when the final buzzer sounded that one team's losing streak would come at the end. Fortunately for the UConn men, the light bulbs finally went off and they were able to end their skid with a 69-46 win over the Pirates in front of a sold-out crowd at the XL Center in Hartford, CT. With the win, the Huskies improve to 15-7 (5-5 Big East) and are now 3-1 (all in the conference) without Calhoun this season. The Pirates fall to 15-8 (4-7). Ryan Boatright was the spark plug on both ends of the floor for UConn as he had 19 points, five assists and four steals. Jeremy Lamb had 17 points and eight rebound while Alex Oriakhi came off the bench to score 10 points and pull down...
