Sengoku III vs. DREAM 4
2008-06-07 15:54:00
The 2 main organizations in Japan at the moment is, of course Sengoku and DREAM. They are both "new" of this year and have both had some sort of problems getting off the ground. They are both now holding an event each, a week a part, in the same arena. As such they can be seen as direct competitors. After Sengoku I and DREAM 1, I had the feeling that the fans thought Sengoku was the favorite to fill the gap after Pride (at least they did seem to have a lot of the momentum). As time has passed, and the organizations have gotten a few more events behind them, my feeling has changed. Momentum seems to be on DREAM's side now. But am I correct in this? What do you think? I have added a poll on the top right and would like to know which card you think is better, i.e. if you had a choice, which event would you go to? For the record, ticket prices are the same.Sengoku card for tomorrow:8. Hidehiko Yoshida 7-6-1 vs. 12-12-0 Maurice Smith 7. Kazuyuki Fujita 15-6-0 vs. 53-11-0 Travis Wiuff6. K...

Who is Kazuo Yoshiki?
2008-06-07 13:56:00
In tomorrow's Sengoku event, there is a fighter named Kazuo Takahashi. Do you know who he is? Sherdog mentions his merrits in this article and it took me a while to look him up before this artice... But it is not that difficult, his name in the Sherdog fighter data base is Yoshiki Takahashi. The article is well worth the read, so if you are planning to follow the event tomorrow, this is a good read before it all goes down: http://www.sherdog.com/news/articles.asp? n_id=13100So, if you were not sure, here you go: http://www.sherdog.com/fightfinder/fightf inder.asp?FighterID=153
6/15 DREAM 4 - CroCop Fight Off!
2008-06-07 13:50:00
NoB an article in Croation (a language I am not very good in), it seems CroCop has had to pull out due to injury. That means no special grappling match with Ralek Gracie. ***Update*** I put DREAM 5 in the header of this post, the fight was of course scheduled for DREAM 4, next weekend.

6/8 Sengoku III - Fight Order Announced
2008-06-07 09:44:00
Sengoku have announced that the main event for tomorrows big show is Yoshida vs. Smith. It also looks like they were unable to find an opponent for Duane Ludwig... Nothing official on that yet, but he is not on the card presented at SportsNavi and I therefore doubt that he will participate... It is the day before the event, so they should have announced it by now.Be aware that GBR has a different fight order than this, but they are only mentioning the main event, so in this case I trust that SportsNavi has gotten it correct. We will have to wait and see if Ludwig appears, but I doubt it at this stage... So that means "only" 8 fights.***Update*** Duane Ludwig's opponent (who was never named) seems to have suffered an injury and the fight is therefore cancelled.Again, I will be doing the Play-By-Play for this event.8. Hidehiko Yoshida 7-6-1 vs. 12-12-0 Maurice Smith 7. Kazuyuki Fujita 15-6-0 vs. 53-11-0 Travis Wiuff6. Kazuo Misaki 19-8-2 vs. 11-1-0 Logan Clark5. Nick Thompson 35-9-1 v...

6/29 ClubDEEP Nagoya
2008-06-07 05:04:00
ClubDEEP Nagoya will be held in ZEPP Nagoya. They have added a tag-team grappling fight to this card, participating will be Hidehiko Hasegawa. Also in this event there are a mix of rules including MMA, grappling and Kick rule.I was confused by what seems to be the main event... Less than 3 months ago, Ryan Bow and Naoki Matsushita fought a draw in ClubDEEP Tokyo, now they get a re-match.It will be interesting to see if Kunihiro Watanabe can continue to finish his opponent inside the first minute, but in this one he might be considered the underdog against the more experienced Umemura, who also likes to finish his fights early.MMA:Naoki Matsushita 9-9-9 vs. 16-8-0 Ryan BowTakashi Matsushita 2-5-1 vs. 0-4-1 Hideo MatsuiHiroshi Umemura 10-7-3 vs. 4-2-0 Kunihiro Watanabe Atsuhiro Tsuboi 5-10-2 vs. 1-3-0 Henrik "Wolverine" Kakiuchi Seiji Akao 3-1-0 vs. 0-2-0 Tatsumitsu WadaTadao Kimura vs. 4-2-0 Yoshiyume ChodoGrappling Tag-team: Hidehiko Hasegawa/Taishi vs. Christian/KodaKick-rule:?? Shooto has updated their site, the URL to the new site is: http://www.shootodenshou.com/ .It looks like most of the information is still on the old site, but lets see if they can update some more. This is of course in relation to the 20th anniversary. There are some videos on the site, I recommend the one in the middle. You can have a good look at Tamura's eye after his fight with Rumina Sato.

6/8 Sengoku 3 - Can they compete??
2008-06-05 08:58:00
Zach Arnold at FightOpinion has called the 3rd Sengoku event "the Mystery Sengoku Event", pointing to the fact that there has been very little publicity surrounding this event. I have to agree with him... Maybe its just too close to Sengoku 2? After Sengoku 1 everyone was singing WVR's praises, but the momentum seems to have shifted towards DREAM.This weekend Sengoku will hold their first event on a really big stage, filling the Saitama Super Arena is not easy. It will be intersting to see if they are able to compete with the attendences DREAM has put up.For the record, here are the attendences for the first 3 DREAM events (all were held in Saitama Super Arena):DREAM 1 - 19,120DREAM 2 - 21,397DREAM 3 - 21,789The card for this Sunday looks interesting and does have some big Japanese stars, but does it draw the crowd the same way the DREAM cards have? We will see on Sunday.I will be doing a live Play-by-Play from this event. The card:Hidehiko Yoshida 7-6-1 vs. 12-12-0 Maurice SmithKaz...

8/27 Pancrase Shining Tour - Neo-Blood Finals
2008-06-05 08:04:00
Pancrase have announced the Neo-Blood finals. I am looking forward to seeing Steve Magdaleno in this, but so far he is listed without an opponent. Hopefully they are able to change that, his last fight was very impressive despite injuring his knee early on in the fight. The Neo-Blood finals are always entertaining and last years event sticks out in my mind as one of the best I have been to. Hopefully this year will prove to be just as good. If you are in Japan, this is one you should not miss (even though it is on a Wednesday).Bantamweight: Takuya Eizumi 1-0-0 vs. 2-0-0 Isao HiroseFeatherweight: Yasutomo Tanaka 5-1-3 vs. 1-0-0 Hirotoshi SaitoLightweight: Steve Magdaleno 4-0-1 vs. X

"Wicky" Akiyo Nishiura
2008-06-05 03:58:00
When Shooto presented "Wicky" Akiyo as a participant of their July 18 I was very excited. But I realize a lot of people might not be familiar with his work, and if you are, there is nothing wrong with seeing some more. He is a very unorthodox fighter and always entertaining. So here are some of his fights:- vs. Hiroshi Nakamura- vs. Kim Jong Man - vs. Daisuke Ishizawa
7/18 Shooto - Tradition 02 - Wicky Akio Participating
2008-06-04 14:49:00
Shooto have added to their Tradition 02 card. I have made a comment earlier about value for money in these events, and as an audience I have to say that this card looks like very good value, with a ringside seat costing 10,000 yen!Today it was announced that Wicky Akiyo will be participating. Earlier it has been announced that "BJ" Kojima is fighting also, so this should be a very good event if you add that to the fights that are already announced.Shinji Sasaki 6-2-0 vs. 8-7-2 Jin KazetaTakehiro Harusaki 5-3-0 vs. 4-0-1 Shinya MurofushiTeriyuki Matsumoto 5-2-0 vs. 4-4-1 Takahiro HosoiAkihiro Yamazaki 9-2-1 vs. 1-0-0 Naoko HirayamaNaohiro Mizuno 2-1-0 vs. 1-0-0 Daiki TsuchiyaRookie Tournament Round 2:Daiki Tsuchiya 1-0-0 vs. 2-1-0 Naohiro MizunoYuta Nezu 4-1-0 vs. 1-0-0 Haruo OchiParticipating:Shinichi "BJ" Kojima 8-3-4"Wicky" Akiyo Nishiura 7-2-1

7/21 DREAM 5 - "Kid" Fighting
2008-06-03 12:54:00
July 21 is the finals for the DREAM Lightweight Tournament. These fights alone should justify the enterance fee, but today Sherdog has an article confirming one of the other fights.Japanese favorite and definitly one of the biggest stars in the MMA circus will take on Joseph Benavidez who is undefeated.NoB is also reporting that DREAM 5 will mark the return of DREAM to Prime Time TV in Japan. And we are likely to find even more big stars on this card.Another thing that came out, that I am not happy about... FEG is saying they want an open draw to determine the match-ups for the Lightweight Semi-finals... Why ask the fans to vote if you are just going to disregard it? Maybe the vote didn't go the way they wanted...Anyway, announced for DREAM 5:Norifumi "Kid" Yamamoto 17-1-0 vs. 7-0-0 Joseph BenavidezLightweight Tournament Semi-Finalists:Caol Uno 25-10-4Eddie Alvarez 14-1-0Tatsuya Kawajiri 22-4-2Shinya Aoki/Katsuhiko Nagata

6/15 DREAM 4 - Fights Added
2008-06-02 14:51:00
DREAM have added 2 more fights to their event June 15. Added to the card is Dutch fighter Alistair Overeem , it will be good to see him back in Japan. Also added it the very exciting Alavutdin Gaddzhiyev, who as been outstanding in his Pancrase fights, he has 7 wins in a row and most finished within the first minute of the fight. He is facing BTT's Alexandre Cacareco who is on a 5 fight winning streak. This will be a Lightheavyweight fight and I think Cacareco is slightly heavier than Alavutdin.Added:Alistair Overeem 26-11-0 vs. 1-1-0 Tae Hyun LeeAlavutdin Gadzhiyev 7-1-0 vs. 16-5-0 Alexandre "Cacareco" Ferreira Previously Announced:Grappling Fight: Mirko "CroCop" Filipovic vs. Ralek GracieHideo Tokoro 19-13-1 vs. 4-1-0 Darren UyenoyamaMiddleweight Tournament:Kazushi Sakuraba 24-10-1 vs. 21-4-1 Melvin ManhoefGegard Mousasi 21-2-1 vs. 4-4-0 Dong Sik YoonRonaldo "Jacare" Souza 8-1-0 vs. 21-5-0 Jason "Mayhem" MillerZelg "Benkei" Galesic 8-3-0 vs. 3-2-0 Taiei Kin

This is a very special event for Sengoku, as it will be their first attempt at filling Saitama Superarena.Today they have announced the opponent for Rodrigo Damm and also Sanae Kikuta will participate in this event. Their opponents will be Jorge Masvidal and Chris Rice, both very good fighters and these fights will be interesting. It also looks like Sengoku will go above the 8 fight barrier that both DREAM and Sengoku have been struggling with (I really think these events should have close to 10 fights, like DREAM 1 had)...Fights announced:Rodrigo Damm 7-1-0 vs. 13-2-0 Jorge MasvidalSanae Kikuta 26-6-3 vs. 12-5-0 Chris RicePreviously announced:Hidehiko Yoshida 7-6-1 vs. 12-12-0 Maurice SmithKazuo Misaki 19-8-2 vs. 11-1-0 Logan ClarkFabio Silva 9-4-0 vs. Kazuo TakahashiChoi Mu Bae 7-2-0 vs. 3-2-0 Marcio Cruz Kazuyuki Fujita 15-6-0 vs. 53-11-0 Travis WiuffNick Thompson 35-9-1 vs. 9-3-0 Michael CostaParticipating:Duane Ludwi...

6/15 DREAM 4 - CroCop Grappling Fight Official
2008-05-28 10:16:00
Well, it is official, Crocop will fight a grappling fight against Ralek Gracie. Will this be a highlight in this event? Probably not, will it be good practice for Crocop? Most definately. Then I guess the question is if people want to pay to watch... I have a feeling the Japanese fans will be happy to and the average UFC fan would probably not. Also added to the card is the fight between Hideo Tokoro and Darren Uyenoyama who holds a win agaist Rambaa Somdet in his last fight in Japan.Added:Grappling Fight :Mirko "CroCop" Filipovic vs. Ralek GracieFeatherweight Fight:Hideo Tokoro 19-13-1 vs. 4-1-0 Darren UyenoyamaPriviously announced:Middleweight Tournament:Kazushi Sakuraba 24-10-1 vs. 21-4-1 Melvin ManhoefGegard Mousasi 21-2-1 vs. 4-4-0 Dong Sik YoonRonaldo "Jacare" Souza 8-1-0 vs. 21-5-0 Jason "Mayhem" MillerZelg "Benkei" Galesic 8-3-0 vs. 3-2-0 Taiei KinLightweight Tournament:Shinya Aoki 15-2-0 vs. 4-2-0 Katsuhiko Nagata

NoB has come across some interesting news on Crocop 's site. It seems a grapplig fight between Crocop and Ralek Gracie will happen in DREAM 4. This will not be a MMA match, but a grappling rules fight. If it goes the distance it will be a draw. Not sure if that is what the fans want to see, either way, very good practice for Crocop. 2/11 Cage Force EX Eastern Bound - Change of Result

For those that remember, in the Cage Force EX Eastern Bound Norman Paraisy fought Hiroki Ozaki in a non-tournament fight. The result at the time was a key-lock win to Ozaki. This has later been changed due to a complaint from Paraisy. For those that have seen the fight, it was clear that Paraisy never tapped. The result is therefore changed to a no-contest and Paraisy remains undefeated.http://www.g-c-m.net/news/0805 17.html
