Colorado Avalanche
2008-01-16 03:54:00 Colorado Avalanche and the gift that keeps on giving.Christmas is over, and it's safe to say that, once again, the Colorado Avalanche sent the Philadelphia Flyers a Christmas card that went unopened.Oh well, there's always Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, Easter, Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, Thanksgiving Day,...Well, you get the message. Plenty of holidays on the calendar for the Colorado Avalanche to show the Flyers just how much they mean to them.Sixteen years after arguably the most lopsided trade in NHL history, the Avalanche are still, indirectly, reaping the rewards for the ill-advised Eric Lindros trade. We just celebrated that joyous season of merriment and giving and, upon reflection, the Flyers sure did give to their Colorado brethren. Or should we say Colorado gave it to Philadelphia? And the gifts we are talking about came in the form of two Stanley Cups dropped off on the other side of the Rockies. This one still has to sting for the Flyers, even a decade and a... Norfolk Admirals struggle with promotion
2008-01-15 23:09:00 Last time I saw pink ice, I was ridiculing one of my buddies for sipping on one of those girlie drinks during a sabbatical down in Mexico. You know, one of those slushy, fruity cocktails with the little umbrellas and a fruity flavor that has every guy in the bar shaking his head and chicas turning away with a laugh of disdain.Memories of a long-forgotten friendship were rekindled over the weekend when the AHL's Norfolk Admirals actually painted their ice pink in the first Pink in the Rink event to raise breast cancer awareness. And hey, with 11 wins in their first 40 games that had them in the basement of the 29-team league, it was an opportunity for the Admirals, for one night, to get away from the norm.Stink in the Rink.I'm checking sources as we speak, but so far no truth to the rumor that Richard Simmons was seen running around outside the arena aimlessly in Spandex screaming "Tickets! Who has tickets?!"Now, to be fair, the pink party was for an extremely worthw... More About: Promotion

Richard Peddie should walk the plank in Toronto
2008-01-14 20:12:00 Odds are, in a moment of levity for Leaf fans sometime in the next 48 hours, one of John Ferguson, Jr. or Paul Maurice -and perhaps both -will be walking the unemployment line.Pop the cork, Toronto .But one neck sure to be absent from the chopping block is that of Richard Peddie's, which may be the biggest gaffe of all for this franchise. If a housecleaning is indeed in order, Peddie should be the first swept under the mat.Ferguson's tenure in Toronto has been nothing short of a disaster. For that, there is no one to blame but Peddie, who hand-picked an unproven general manger to sharpen his claws in the most pressure-packed of hockey markets.Normally, I tend to agree with Steve Simmons more often than not - and I may be one of the few - but his assertion this mess is not Peddie's fault is completely off the mark. Peddie hired Ferguson, which has translated into one the worst decisions in recent memory for the folks at MLSE.For an outfit that hasn't won a damn thing in four... More About: Walk
Curtis Joseph signing expected somewhere
2008-01-14 20:07:00 Don't draw up those retirement papers up for Curtis Joseph just yet.A few teams seem to think that Cujo has a little bite left in him.Just a few weeks after I took part in a tit-for-tat on whether or not Curtis Joseph was washed up, word surfaced this weekend that the 40-year-old has narrowed down his comeback choices to two teams - the San Jose Sharks and Calgary Flames. As I mentioned last week, I figured it was just a matter of time before someone rolled the dice with Cujo. He is as reliable a safety net available today, a fact that the Flames and Sharks, two teams with a bona-fide number one, seem to realize. The rumor wire Saturday night suggested that the Rangers and Leafs had entered the fray, which leaves me puzzled for a couple of reasons. In New York, Stephen Valiquette has put up somewhat respectable numbers for a team that is going to lean heavily on starter Henrik Lundqvist. Any contract Curtis Joseph signs in Manhattan may as well come with a pair of tweezers for ... More About: Signing
Alex Ovechkin contract a no-brainer for Washington
2008-01-11 20:44:00 Well, I guess those silly Alex Ovechkin rumors can now be put to bed, huh?The ink has dried on that historic 13-year, $124-million pact that gives Ovechkin long-term security and, if he so chooses, the ability to buy a piece of Greenland. So much for certain internet bloggers throwing everything against the wall to see what sticks. The largest contract in the history of the NHL just shows that maybe this guy should try to find another line of work.Ovechkin, on the other hand, won't have that problem. It was almost a no-brainer for Ted Leonsis and George McPhee. Both didn't want the talks to drag into July, forcing Ovechkin to arbitration to avoid the inevitable offer sheets that would come his way.Leonsis and McPhee will sleep well now.Really, is anyone surprised? Big bucks, no doubt, but you had to figure Ovechkin was going to cash in, perhaps like no one before him.Now the debate begins. Is anyone, let alone Ovechkin, worth that type of money, especially seeing how Sidney C... More About: Washington , Contract
Mats Sundin trade needs to happen soon
2008-01-11 20:26:00 If there was ever a dilemma in the Leafs' front office whether or not to ask Mats Sundin to waive his no-trade clause, that problem was just solved over a 48-hour period out on the California coast.Fans know it. Management knows it. Heck, anyone in the league knows it. And the general managers quietly putting together proposals in boardrooms know it.Now John Ferguson, who is somehow hanging on to his job by a thread, needs to convince Sundin a change of scenery is in everyone's best interests and make a deal, a move that will surely spell the end of JFJ's tenure in Toronto. Two things should be a given. Mats Sundin , at the very latest, should play his final game as a Leaf Feb. 25th in Ottawa, one day before the trade deadline. Shortly after, Ferguson should be on the unemployment line. That's assuming he even lasts that long, which right now seems nothing more than an even-money proposition.Only then will the Leafs be able to look to the future, chalking up JFJ's five year... Clarke?s defense of Downie classless
2008-01-10 22:37:00 Nothing like Bobby Clar ke using a little shock factor to keep himself in the public eye.Something tells me he misses the attention.Clarke's to-the-point comments on TSN's Off The Record Wednesday night suggests that he still wears his Philadelphia Flyers' heart on his sleeve. As Booby - and no, that is not a typo - would have you believe, both Jason Blake and Dean McAmmond are to blame for being on the receiving end of a pair of Steve Downie cheap shots in recent weeks."When he went after Blake, I loved it," Clarke told TSN. "The kid did what every hockey player should do.""If a player like Blake who's been around as long as he has wants to criticize a player then he has to go on the ice with him and suffer the consequences."Not surprisingly, it was Clarke, then the general manager of the Flyers, who selected Downie in the opening round of the entry draft back in 2005.Not surprisingly, the same Clarke who agreed the only way to beat the Russia... Top NHL goals that grab your attention
2008-01-10 22:36:00 As much as hockey is a team sport, individual efforts are noticed most often - especially when it comes to goals. And since virtually any highlight can be found at a click of the mouse, the best-of-the-best goals can easily be scrutinized and debated. When TSN offered up its Top 10 NHL Goals of All-Time, it ended up being a compilation of some pretty amazing individual performances.Forget the tic-tac-toe passing between linemates, these are some of the greatest dekes and end-to-end rushes.Check out the video evidence here. The list is very good, but not perfect, if I were the TSN editor. I'd rearrange things just a little and make a couple of subtle changes.Mario Lemieux's marker against Minnesota, third on the TSN list, tops it for me. This guru-of-goals turns the entire roster inside-out with a plethora of highlight moves.Maxim Afinogenov, fourth on the list, comes in next for me. A fantastic spinning move in front of the Tampa net simply makes all defenders look silly. And ... More About: Attention , Grab
Fantasy Focus - Top 10 Playmakers
2008-01-10 22:35:00 With the dog days of winter about to give way to the stretch drive for all your fantasy pools, maybe you're looking to make a blockbuster deal or two that may put you over the top. Whether it was Gretzky setting up Kurri, Oates dishing to Hull or, these days, Crosby passing to Malkin, setup men have made life a whole lot easier for the NHL's elite and, at times, no-so-elite, to ply their trade. This is wide open for debate, like everything in the fantasy world, but I'm giving you the scoop on who I consider to be the best playmakers around today:10. Patrick Kane, Chicago For a kid as unproven as Kane, he can certainly set them up with the best of them. The future of the Blackhawks looks solid, at long last some would say, with Kane and fellow rookie sensation Jonathan Toews set to make Chicago a force to be reckoned with in the next few years. A case could also be made for the likes of Paul Stastny, Martin St. Louis and Ryan Getzlaf, among others, but I'm givin... More About: Fantasy , Focus , Fantasy Focus
Five to watch at the NHL trade deadline
2008-01-10 21:54:00 Here we are, about six weeks before the NHL's trading deadline, and, if you listen closely, you'll hear the whispers.‘Dem trade winds, des a-blowin'. Buyers or sellers? Who may end up where on hockey's most anticipated day? Opinions are a lot like taxes and, um, belly buttons. Everyone has ‘em. On that note, let's take a look at five names that may - or may not-be looking at a change of address by the end of day Feb. 26:MATS SUNDINFirst off, John Ferguson's phone should be ringing off the hook for Mats Sundin in the coming weeks, with the Swede the potential big fish that rival GM's will be looking to reel in. If Ferguson and his MLSE bosses are looking to the future, this move needs to be made. With an extremely attractive lot available at this summer's entry draft, GMs will be reluctant to part with a first-rounder to top off any package, but Sundin should land the Leafs, at the very least, a prospect, second-round pick and, perhaps, a current roster... Steve Downie shows a soft side
2008-01-09 21:24:00 Hey, the Philadelphia Flyers made news again and didn't need a suspension to hit the front page of the sports section.Who knew? For once, I was hoping to write a piece not slagging the Flyers. Finally.Turns out upon hearing the story of a Campbellford, Ont. family jobbed by a con artist, the Flyers decided to fly 13-year-old Mitch Steve ns down to Philly and give him the royal treatment.Steve Downie, who has been on the receiving end of a few of my diatribes, called the kid. Box tickets to a Flyer game. Meet the Flyers in person. Tour of the Comcast Center. Heck, even a Zamboni ride. It's safe to say the Flyers won back a few of their harshest critics with the gesture.Classy move but when it comes to the NHL, no one should be caught off-guard.Sure, baseball may reach out to the community as well, but you never know if they'll be testifying before a grand jury on the big day. And while the NFL spreads its wings wide for the underprivileged, it's a coin flip whether or not the player... More About: Soft , Side

Canada goes for gold Saturday at WJHC
2008-01-05 03:12:00 Canada is just one step away from a fourth consecutive gold medal at the World Junior Hockey Championship. The Canadians defeated the previously-unbeaten U.S. squad 4-1 in a semi-final this afternoon to advance to Saturday 's gold medal game against Sweden, another team that has gone through the tournament without a blemish on its record.Shawn Matthias and Karl Alzner staked Canada to a 2-0 lead with second period markers before Colton Gillies and Brad Marchand scored 20 seconds apart in the third to put it out of reach. The Americans posted a 4-0 record in the round robin to finish atop Group B, earning a bye into the semis. Canada was 3-1 in Group A, good enough for second spot, and beat Finland in a quarter-final Wednesday. Canada has lost just once in its past 24 games at the WJHC. That's the good news. The bad? It was Sweden that handed them that lone setback last Saturday. On Saturday, Canada gets their chance to even the score with gold on the line (2 pm EST).Watching with avid... More About: Gold , Canada

2008-01-05 00:47:00 God bless Donald Trump. The Donald has an eye for the ladies, but still had the guts to fire one - a Playmate of the Year no less - last night on Celebrity Apprentice. From a fantasy standpoint, those of you suffering along with some of your slumping players could benefit from a season of "Apprentice: NHL Coach" to weed out the weak instructors. I mean, how much better would Tampa's Vincent Lecavalier be doing if coach John Tortorella wasn't calling the shots? Now, Tortorella is too easy a target, what with the Bolts' goaltending problems, but he could be better managing stars like Vinny, Martin St. Louis and Brad Richards.Another fish in a barrel is Toronto's Paul Maurice. According to numbers released Monday, the Classic even outdrew Wayne Gretzky's final game back in 1999.Impressed yet? Now, of course, depending on whether or not you choose to look at the glass as half-empty of half-full, you can make a point that most viewers in the U.S. could still care less about the NHL.Thanks for the insight. NHL goal celebrations can become instant classics
2008-01-04 21:51:00 Truth be told, I'd just as soon see NHL players stay somewhat reserved when celebrating goals.None of this sprinting away from your teammates while sucking your thumb before lifting your leg like a puppy on the corner flag stuff that you see way too often in soccer.A Tiger Woods-inspired fist pump followed by a little group hug with a couple of helmet taps is enough of a celebration for my liking. No showboating, Terrell Owens wannabes for me.In other words, when you've just scored, act like you've done it before. Then again, every once in a while some extra exuberance puts a smile on my face. And there have been some memorable NHL goal celebrations over the years.I'm plenty old enough to remember Tiger Williams, decked out in his awful fluorescent yellow and black Canucks uniform, riding his stick down the ice at Maple Leaf Gardens after scoring against his former team. Can't remember the goal. But the celebration is etched in my memory, only to be erased somewhere down the road... More About: Celebrations , Classics , Goal
