NHL lines that need to be thrown together
2008-01-04 02:50:00
OK. It's official. I've got way too much time on my hands.Sometimes, as a youngster with nothing to do, I would mull over what bands should tour together simply because of their nickname. You know, Styx and the Stones. Beatles and Scorpions. Queen and Prince. Meat Loaf and Black Eyed Peas.Do I not just scream "loser", or what? And now, as luck would have it - or, for those reading this, bad luck - my warped mind has carried over to hockey. In dire need of a hobby, I've taken some time to compile a list of hockey lines we'd like to see. Pull a trade or two, convert a goalie to forward, whatever it takes to get these guys together. In an effort to attract new fans, it's time to think outside the box:Bass-Fisher-Gill seems a perfect fit, preferably on the Sharks.Expansion into Vegas wouldn't be complete without a line of Abid-Card-Betts-Price.For the hippie generation, outside of a dime bag and a Volkswagen van, we need Crosby, Stillman, Nash and Young. Groovy.Eager-Boyes...

The Ottawa Senators will have defenseman Anton Volchenkov in the lineup when they face Buffalo on Friday. Volchenkov missed 15 games with a broken finger. The Sens are close to getting forward Patrick Eaves back from injury. Eaves has missed 19 games with a separated shoulder but coach John Paddock believes he could return to action in the next week... The Avalanche have recalled forward T.J. Hensick from the Lake Erie Monsters of the AHL. Hensick was sent down Dec. 28 after 12 games in Colorado...Despite receiving medical clearance to play, Montreal defenseman Patrice Brisebois probably won't skate against Tampa Bay tonight at the Bell Centre. Brisebois has been out with a shoulder injury since Dec. 11. Two other banged-up Habs, Bryan Smolinski and Steve Begin, also practised yesterday but neither is expected back soon...Tampa's Brad Richards, a league-worst minus-23, hasn't scored in eight games and has just one goal in the last 11. Fantasy Focus POTW ? Alex Ovechkin
2008-01-03 21:14:00
The Reaper paid a visit to the Ottawa Senators this past week.Only it was grinning Capital Alex Ovechkin wielding his scythe-like stick to take apart the Sens with a four-goal, one-assist performance in the Caps' 8-6 win on Dec. 29.Little wonder, then, that he is this week's Fantasy Focus Player of the Week.In four games between Dec. 26 and Jan. 1, he put away five goals and assisted on four others to boost his season totals to 30 goals and 20 assists in 40 games. He is second only to Ilya Kovalchuk (32) in overall goals. His production also propelled suddenly hot Washington to three wins and one overtime loss. While Ovechkin lit it up during the holidays, quite a few other NHLers also celebrated in style. In direct contrast, others played like the turkey they ate. Here are the week's Hot and Not fantasy players.HotNikolai Zherdev, Columbus - The hot-shot Russian lived up to his hype, logging two goals and five assists in four games. The Jackets took three of four to climb up the We...

Air Hockey Table
2008-01-03 10:27:00
I've spent quite a few evenings relaxing in a good friend's hockey-themed rec room banging away at his air hockey table - all the while having a blast! When a live game isn't on the tube, having a mini-tournament among friends can pass the hours and create great memories. What's better than a few cold beverages, some good music, and a fight for hockey pride? For those folks who haven't played the game, a typical air hockey table usually has a very smooth playing surface mounted on an eight-foot table. There are boards, or a rail, that surround the playing surface so that the puck does not easily slide off. Air is pumped up through tiny holes to reduce friction as the puck slides along the slick surface.Players use a paddle, or mallet as some call it, to swipe at the plastic puck and direct it towards the opposing player's net (which is just a slot in the end of the boards). Intentionally bouncing, or banking, the puck off the sides often gives a player an advantage in getting it...

Lecavalier deal may be only way out for Lightning
2008-01-03 03:58:00
Somewhere in between profanity-laced tirades and calling out his goaltenders, John Tortorella must be wondering where the hell it all went wrong.Just four years removed from a Stanley Cup parade in Tampa, the Bolts find themselves in the Eastern Conference toilet. An ugly ownership soap opera is getting comical. Goalies couldn't stop a runny nose. And The Big Three is suddenly The Only One. It's time for change in Tampa.Jay Feaster can deny it all he wants, but one of Martin St. Louis, Brad Richards or Vincent Lecavalier could very well be on his way out of Tampa in the next couple of months. The betting here is Richards, who is minus-42 over his past two seasons — no, that is not a typo — and is a league-worst -23 in 2006-07, would be available for just about anything right now. Problem is Richards, like St. Louis, has a no-trade clause. Unless Feaster convinces him to waive his NTC and there is a general manager in the league stupid enough to trade for ...

Canada-USA has become hottest junior rivalry
2008-01-03 03:21:00
This is why I love the world junior tournament.Canada versus the United States. The two nations I believe are the best in the junior hockey world hammering the snot out of each other just to keep alive the possibility of getting their hands on a small, gold medallion. The winner gets the chance to play for the gold medal and national glory. The loser is bumped into the decidedly non-motivating bronze-medal game with a cloud of shame hanging over their heads. It just doesn't get any better than this, does it?I suppose the only thing that would top Friday's Canada-U.S. semifinal would be if this dream match-up came in the final. But that would be asking for too much.Preventing the Americans from advancing to the final would be just as sweet as winning the gold medal for most Canadian hockey fans.We would enjoy nothing more that seeing the country that touts itself as the best in the world playing in the game to decide, uh, third place. While we play for gold.Again.Last year's shootout...

Canada survives scare at world juniors
2008-01-02 23:34:00
Too close for comfort.Canada received a scare from Finland in the quarter-finals of the World Junior Hockey Championship but managed to hang on for a 4-2 win today in Pardubice to keep its gold medal hopes alive. In the semifinals Friday, the Canadian team will face the USA in a rematch of last year's semifinal.Canada's two youngest players turned the tide against Finland.John Tavares and Steven Stamkos, both 17 and undrafted by NHL teams, scored Canada's first two goals to erase a 1-0 Finnish lead. Tavares tied it in the second when he scored his fourth of the tournament, then Stamkos recorded his first to give Canada its first lead.Brad Marchand, a veteran of the gold-medal Canadian team in 2007, netted what would turn out to be the winner at 13:32 of the third period. Marchand's centering pass was redirected into the open net by Finnish defenseman Joonas Jalvanti.Stefan Legein iced it with an empty-net goal in the final minute of regulation time.Drew Doughty had a pair of assi...
NHL Winter Classic proves league can get it right
2008-01-02 23:01:00
OK, so 70,000 people can't be wrong.I, on the other hand, can be.Apparently the NHL can go head-to-head with college football bowl games and more than hold their own. With yesterday's Winter Classic nothing short of an overwhelming success, the NHL got it right. And yes, I stand corrected.Outside of the wrath of Mother Nature, which the denizens of Buffalo are more than familiar with, and a few extended delays to patch up the ice, the NHL couldn't have done it any better. There seemed to be a few in the crowd of 71,000-plus not nursing one of those dreaded way-too-many-from-the-night-before hangovers. Once you took a closer look, you realized they still had a beer in their hands, the party not quite over. You saw a handful of attention-starved oafs in the crowd taking their shirts off in one of those "Hey, Mom, look at me!" moments. Mom must have been so proud. Some needed a work out, the rest needed to lay off the doughnuts. But who cares? It was the NHL's New Year's bas...

Fantasy Focus - A net full of resolutions
2007-12-29 02:55:00
Happy holidays, poolies!Hope you're not too sleepy from all that turkey, because the New Year is upon us and there is much to look forward to.Resolutions , no doubt, should be high on your list of priorities as the NHL hits the mid-way mark of the 2007-2008 season. Like resolving not to let your roto competitors steal a prime sleeper from you or not sitting that forward who is just breaking out of a slump. While you resolve not to be a fantasy bonehead, quite a few NHLers need to make some pledges of their own. This season has been full of surprises, including Pascal Leclaire's rise to goaltending prominence via an incredible seven shutouts.Leclaire's brilliance, though, is overshadowed by Chris Simon's idiotic acts and the offensive woes of high-priced free agents Chris Drury and Todd Bertuzzi.Warm up a few leftovers, then, and have a gander at resolutions that your favorite, or not-so-favorite, NHL regulars could be making in the next few days.Atlanta's Ilya Kovalchuk vows to sh...

Brett Hull a slam-dunk for Hall of Fame
2007-12-29 01:46:00
View Video of the Week.Brett Hull might want to start looking for a flashy new suit.Subtlety has never been Hull's style. On or off the ice.But whatever duds he settles on, the little guy with the big mouth and bigger shot, will definitely need something to wear at the Hockey Hall of Fame induction ceremony in a couple years time.Heck, he might as well book a flight and hotel room while he's at it.He's a lock to get in. You can bet the ranch on it, buckaroo.Don't believe me?Well, check out this video of some of his career highlights and tell me you're not watching one of the best pure goal scorers in NHL history. Go ahead, try to convince me.You'd be wasting your breath.Hull, now the interim co-general manager of the Dallas Stars, was one of the best snipers I have ever seen.He scored 741 goals for Pete's sake. In the history of the NHL, only a couple guys named Gretzky and Howe scored more times. You might have heard of them.Over the course of three seasons early in his NHL ...

Ray Emery not taking backup role sitting down
2007-12-29 01:44:00
Really, I have no idea what Ray Emery 's plans are for New Year's Eve, but I've got $50 that says he'll be the guest of honor at a festive little whine and cheese shindig.Act your age, Ray, not your goals against average. The temper tantrums are getting nauseating.Without a doubt, the edgy Senators' goaltender is in the early stages of a three-alarm meltdown that should all but end his time in Ottawa.Time to call the real estate agent. Put the house on the block.  When your captain calls you out, it's time to shut your trap and pack your bags. Seems Emery threw a hissy fit Thursday at the Senators' game-day skate, playing tough guy on a row of Gatorade bottles before tossing his stick into the stands.Mature stuff, huh?Throughout the Ottawa valley, drivers are getting nervous. It appears someone is a little cranky about getting his butt stapled to the bench in the nation's capital, and Daniel Alfredsson could care less."To get considered for a start, (the coaching st...

Cujo needs to realize he's washed up I hope Curtis Joseph is satisfied being the fifth-best goalie, at least in terms of wins, in NHL history.Because he's as done as the turkey I served for dinner the other day.Joseph is 40-years-old, hasn't played since April and is coming off the worst season, statistically, of his career. For a reason I simply cannot fathom, he thinks he still has enough game to play in the best hockey league in the world. Instead of calling it quits, though, Joseph has come up with a brilliant plan that will resurrect his NHL career. Play for Team Canada at the Spengler Cup.Now, before all you Cujo fans get worked up into a lather, I'd like to point out one important thing about the Canadian national team Joseph is playing on in the Swiss Alps. It is made up of has-beens and never-will-bes, thrown together for a tournament no one gives a rat's ass about. Not exactly the Olympic team, I reckon. But by playing in the Spengler Cup, Joseph is trying to showca...

Fantasy Focus - Top 10 goalies
2007-12-28 23:10:00
Roberto Luongo's already loaded-down Christmas stocking just got a little heavier.Fantasy fanatics who own the Vancouver netminder should be pleased he copped a top goalie award for 2007. His play has certainly merited it, whether it's during the regular season or playoffs. That got us thinking - a dangerous pastime around here, for sure - that we haven't given the NHL's puck-stoppers their proper due this year.Well, I guess it's time we trimmed the goalie tree with a few bright lights.Of course, no fantasy list would be weighted down with anything but statistics. We're including 2006-07 stats, as well as the current season's.However, for those of you with an eye to how these guys impact their teams, we're going to include other factors - things like awards (Vezina, Jennings) and the ability to "steal" games.Without further ado, here's the Hockey.com list of top 10 goalies. And Luongo didn't quite make numero uno.1. Martin Brodeur, New Jersey — The reigning ...

Alex Ovechkin should be NHL?s poster boy
2007-12-22 07:12:00
If there ever was a time the NHL needed a fun-loving, goofy spokesperson, that time is now.And Alex Ovechkin fills the bill.Just a couple days ago, a few Capitals players were looking for a way to pass the time. Team management set up a quick tour of the White House area of Washington on Segways, the two-wheeled motorized scooter. From all accounts, Ovechkin was the life of the party, yelling out to pedestrians, joking with a protestor at the White House, and off-roading before receiving a warning from police. It wasn't a planned PR stunt - it just fell into place. This is the sort of thing that happens when Ovechkin is around. He's a star blessed with talent and loads of personality. He gives a great sound bite, in direct contrast to the polished media-savvy truisms that come from current favorite son Sidney Crosby.Ovechkin just tells it as he sees it, and has great fun doing so.He is, my friends, a marketing dream.Part of the charm is his quirky Russian accent an...

Bertuzzi, Nonis lack class in blaming Crawford
2007-12-22 03:44:00
Marc Crawford, you may want to keep your head up. It looks like Todd Bertuzzi, Dave Nonis and the Vancouver Canuck organization aren't quite done with the cheap shots.Judging by the testimony made public this in the Steve Moore lawsuit this week, Bertuzzi and Nonis are making it clear. Crawford is no longer the hunter; he is now the hunted.Gutless. Bertuzzi, Nonis and Orca Bay, parent company of the Canucks, are cowards. All of them.Last I checked, Crawford isn't one of the defendants. Nope, the names that will be scrawled on that check will be those of Orca Bay, who at one time employed Crawford, and Todd Bertuzzi.Just a couple of weeks ago, Bertuzzi attempted to shock the hockey world when he insisted it was Crawford,  then coach of the Vancouver Canucks, who told his charges that Moore had to "pay the price" for what he deemed to be a headhunting mission on captain Markus Naslund a couple of weeks earlier.Convenient, isn't it?
