Send the thug Joey Barton back to jail
2008-02-10 04:24:00
I have no problem using the word thug when it comes to Joey Barton and I'd challenge anyone to tell me I'm wrong. He's out on bail for assault, beat up a team mate when at Manchester City, broke a 35-year-old pedestrian's leg while driving his car through Liverpool and his brother is serving a 17 year prison sentence. Are all of these just an unlucky coincidence?

2008-02-10 02:12:00
As the race for the English title heats up, Arsenal are labeled ‘in crisis’ in the lead-up to the home game against Blackburn Rovers - a match that will test the very limits of how far this side can be stretched under pressure. With a host of centrebacks out - Senderos and Djourou scythed down by ...

What Went Wrong?
2008-02-09 18:57:00
I’m flying back from Washington today so I didn’t catch the Birmingham game. From what I have picked up we dominated possession, squandered chances and were not at all impressive. And Lucas Neill was jetlagged and should never have played. How was it for you?

Great result and considering we went in at half time one down you've got to be quite impressed. A match report is coming from Doc later but for now I'll just say we've done what we had to do and that is get three points.

Arsenal in Brisbane? What a joke.
2008-02-09 03:49:00
Regular readers of the blog will know that I’m Australian and I’ve never once seen an Arsenal game live. What a farce it would be if the first game I actually got to see was in my home town of Brisbane rather than in London at the Emirates Stadium. Enough said, really. Enjoy your weekend and if you ...

Capello and England: Nothing Wrong With a Slap On The Wrist
2008-02-09 02:19:00
Parenting groups from all around the globe will now come down like a hail of bullets on Keeper Skool for this article's title, but it's true. David James will now be gifted the chance to be England custodian under Capello 's guidance, and he is finding that the task master attitude can be quite alarming, but on the whole beneficial for an England team in sore need of improvement. There is nothing wrong with a totalitarian view on a sorry state of affairs, and what Capello brings to England is years of brilliance as a manager, trumped with years of Spartan discipline. Under managers such as McClaren there was confusion, a fog of uncertainty that marred the ability of some fantastic goalkeepers such as Carson and Robinson (no matter what the media thinks). Goalkeepers on the whole need certainty, not just from players, but from management as well, and James will do well under Capello's all seeing eye. So why is this transition beneficial not only for England or James, but from the v...

Petition the greedy Premier League suits to nip this idea in the bud
2008-02-08 09:08:00
I like a good petition and when I looked at this one (http://www.petitiononline.com/Rocky7/pet ition.html) only a couple of hours ago it had 119 names - it now has over 1,000 and deserves a lot more. Basically, it's saying don't ruin our game. The important word in that phrase is 'our' because it is ours and while they can get away with most it appears most don't want our teams playing all over the World.

2008-02-08 03:51:00
Randy Lerner purchased Aston Villa football club to make money, this has been confirmed in the past by the non executive forum poster General Krulak and as such this overseas game will probably go ahead. It's not just down to Mr Lerner, but it's easy for us to associate with our owner, but rest assured whoever was representing Manchester United, Liverpool and other teams with new owners were probably under instructions to say yes to anything if it meant more money.

book review: witty quotes of arsenal?s arséne wenger
2008-02-07 09:45:00
It's yet another (aargh!) internationals week and so I thought I'd do a quick book review. I'm a firm believer in one's humour being a firm measure of the character of a person (what does that say about moi, I wonder?), and so I've always followed with a keen interest the musings and quotes of our beloved gaffer, Monsieur Wenger. It was with some anticipation that I ordered "Quotations from the Public Comments of Arséne Wenger" compiled by...

Five reasons why Arsenal are leading the Premiership
2008-02-07 08:54:00

JJ in Tune
2008-02-07 08:07:00
Ok, that’s it. The guy needs a bloody song. It’s starting to get embarrassing. JJ scores a goal and we sing for the person who set it up. Admittedly, last night’s tap-in wasn’t exactly the kind of stuff to earn him his place in Valhalla but now even the England fans are going to begin to take notice in the works of our much improved midfielder. What happens when they come up with chant before we do? Shameful. Now the tricky part, as Oog often states, is that there’s only one word that comes to mind to rhyme with Jenas (pronounced Gee-nus) and I don’t think anyone’s going to feel too comfortable shouting that one out even if we’re speculatively complementing the size of his old chap. One idea I had was to just shout, “JJ! JJ! JJ!” but as Jimmy Nam (nee Wii) pointed out, that’s Gareth Bale’s song, “BALE! BALE! BALE!” So, where does that leave us? Well, nowhere. Even if we go for the chimes tune eg: &l...

Road Trips: Goalkeeping Strategies To Stay In Hot Form When Travelling On T
2008-02-07 04:05:00
Living in Alaska makes me somewhat of an expert on long road trips. The shortest road trip I have been on with the state team in the last four years was four hours long, and the longest was about fifteen hours long. Although travel is an essential part of football, it is much harder at the youth level. I cannot remember a time where I had more than 24 hours to recover from traveling before the first match of a tournament. Because of this, I have learned several ways to minimize the effect of travel and be able to perform well in the first match. However, it always takes at least one match to regain all of my playing ability.Drink lots of water the day before and the day of travel. Dehydration is one of the most common ailments affecting players after long trips, but it is one of the most easily avoided ones also. These days, new flying rules do not allow bringing full water bottles through airport security, but I usually bring one and fill it with water from a fountain after securit...

Arsenal have nearly as points as last year, but may need record levels to w
2008-02-06 16:14:00
Arsenal finished last season with 68 points from 38 gamesArsenal are currently on 60 points from 25 games. Arsenal are on course for 91.2 pointsUnited are on course for 88.2 pointsChelsea are on course for 82.1 points To put that in some kind of perspective, last season Liverpool came third with 68 points. Currently, Chelsea will exceed that total by a huge distance but finish no higher. In fact, they'll as good as match their total of 83 points from last season, which meant United needed only 84 points to win the league (they got 89). 84 points wouldn't see a team come close as it stands. Both Arsenal and United would've won the 2006/7 league by current standards In 2005/6, the top three had a higher points tally, with Chelsea, United, and Liverpool finishing on 91, 83 and 82 points respectively. Again though, Chelsea realistically only needed 84 points to win it, which both United and Arsenal are on course to reach comfortably. Before the weekend, Chelsea were on course to have...

Arsenal mid-term report card (Part 2)
2008-02-06 11:49:00
In yesterday’s post I ran through Part 1 of the Arsenal mid-term report card, focusing on the performances of the Arsenal defenders and midfielders so far this season. Today the midfielders and forwards go under the microscope as I wrap up Part 2 of the report. Enjoy. Midfielders Mathieu Flamini In my opinion, the standout performer in the Arsenal team this season. Has put in the hard work to go from third or four-choice at the end of last season to becoming arguably the most important member of the midfield. Flamini’s energy and workrate has been phenomenal, his partnership with Fabregas vital, and he has not played poorly once thus far. Irreplaceable. (A+) Cesc Fabregas The little Spaniard’s form has dipped a little of late but his contribution in the first third of the season has been vital. When on song Fabregas has regularly been a match-winner, scoring goals at crucial times. His fitness, ball control and excellent passing has allowed him to dictate the play...

Scott Carson is available, unless Benítez has changed his mind
2008-02-06 08:41:00
I just read something over on the new and looking quite nice Birmingham Mail website (http://www.birminghammail.net/birmingham -sport/aston-villa-fc/2008/02/06/o-neill- has-no-doubts-on-scott-carson-97319-20441 799/) where they've got Martin O'Neill sounding a little unsure about the availability of Scott Carson . Well, back in November Liverpool were willing to let him go (http://www.avfcblog.com/content/view/206 3/70/), leaving the decision very firmly in the hands of Aston Villa. Maybe more communication is needed between the two clubs?

WHS - The Enemy from Within
2008-02-06 07:37:00
Hi all, I’ve found some blog hacking software - as you can see, it’s rather good! So, here’s my opportunity to tell you the way it really is. Let’s start with a bit of background - without revealing my age, I can tell you I remember the League Cup win over the rapidly declining Liverpool team of 1986-7, vaguely, and remember losing to Luton the following year. Those days were tough times for us Arsenal fans. We were, as a team, methodical, workmanlike, proper working class footballers, supported by proper working class geezers, it seemed to fit. You could respect the game and the players, you could empathise, but also you felt frustrated, there were many times during the early days that I thought that I could easily replace Lee Dixon, I could plod through a game, hold a line, make a decent tackle and hoof the ball to Alan Smith. But this defensively minded team brought success, no one was expecting our league win of ‘89, and I guess that was what made ...
